I was thinking about being a browncoat, what it means, how it isn't a fad, or some little thing. I think once you are one, you can never not be one. Nathan, despite the fame, the riches to come, in his heart of hearts will always be a Browncoat. I can see Filion going strong into his 40's, 50's, and 60's. I can even picture a grey haired Captain Malcolm Reynolds fighting the good fight. One thing that is certain for me, I will foever be a "Browncoat". Hell, I was a Browncoat before I ever knew what a Browncoat was.

Fighting the good fight Sir, holding til you get back

AM I NOT MERCIFUL?!?!?!?

I too was a Browncoat before I even knew it and was instantly aware of being one the minute I fell in love with Firefly.

I WILL be a Browncoat until the day I die. Proudly.

Yeah, I agree entirely. Whatever the future brings (and I hope it will bring more FIREFLY/SERENITY) I won't give up being a Browncoat. It's certainly not a fad. It's a part of life, a way of thinking and it's a loyalty to a cause (and a show) that I will always love.

Whatever comes.....we'll hold til Mal gets back. We have to.

I'm cheating a bit - I 'borrowed' this from Wikipedia:

Quote:

In the real world, "Browncoat" describes an especially devoted fan to the fictional Firefly universe. Browncoats sometimes wear bootleg Blue Sun t-shirts and caps, and can usually be found wearing them or character's costumes at conventions, making them recognizable to one another. The success of both the sales of the Firefly DVDs and the theatrical release of Serenity has been attributed largely to word of mouth of these Browncoats. Universal Studios had numerous early screenings of Serenity to existing fans of the series in an attempt to foster high ticket sales.

Many have made comparisons between Browncoats and Trekkies. To begin with, both are groups whose TV show was canceled and then turned into a movie because the fan base was so strong. Also, both groups have a language that is unique to them: for the Trekkies it's Klingon, for the browncoats it's Mandarin Chinese and a future form of English, with new words and slurred ones, like "gorram", which is a slur of "god-damn". Oddly enough, there are a number of Trekkies who have said that they consider Firefly to be one of the greatest science fiction shows ever. There are even people who consider themselves to be both a Trekkie and a Browncoat.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

That's the appeal I found in all this, that I already WAS a Browncoat before having ever heard of 'em. The fact that I'm of an more advanced age than most typical SciFi fans (40) should give notice that I'm not one to lightly associate myself w/ the next 'cool' thing. Growing up, I never identified w/ Trekkers, Trekkies, or Jedi types. ( though I did enjoy some of the stories. ) Something just came along with which I identified, and that's pretty much that.

People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy. - Joss

I agree with AURAPTOR. I've never been much of a fan of Star Trek or Star Wars, although there were shiny in their own way. It was just the 'reality' of Firefly that made it so appealing. Made me feel at home. I think I'll just tell the good lord when I die that I don't want no silky, shiny white robe. I'll just keep my dusty ol' browncoat.

Keep flyin'.

I am right there with ya Raptor, turning 43 in april, so I grew up with star trek, and star wars. I love both those verses, but never have I been "in love" with them. I never been fanatical about anything except maybe videogames, until "Firefly". My whole life I have always done my best to do the right thing, do for my family, and keep on flying. I'm not perfect, the way it is, is the way it is. I'm sure if I wracked my brain, I could analyze why I love "Firefly" so deeply, but I'll sum it up into one sentence.

"When I watch "Firefly", I feel like I am home"

I'm 51 and this is the first show that I've ever gotten "obsessed" with to put it mildly. I always loved Star Trek but not even close to the degree I've loved Firefly and Serenity. When I consider what it means to be a Browncoat I think of things like a tenacity to keep trying in the face of failure, a never give in attitude and a sense that the majority is not always right, just the majority with all the power (Alliance). It also means a kind of virtual community of like minded people that share their love of something special that has touched a nerve in each of them. Something we all can indentify with on a deeper level that lets us put aside any of the petty differences that so many people focus on nowadays to separate themselves from others. How long will I be a Browncoat? Once you put on that coat there's no turnin back, it's with you till you die and perhaps even longer. Maybe God's a Browncoat?

AGIRLYMAN,

I agree that you can be a Browncoat a long while and not even know it. Heck I would even venture to say that most folks would consider themselves Browncoats. By definitons it would seem to be that you are a Browncoat if you simply don't take what authority has to say as gospel.

Who doesn't see things that way.Things aren't just black and white as the Alliance(and others) would have us think. there are plenty of gray areas that the controlers of worlds(and universes) use all the time to manipulate how things go.

So yep I'm a Browncoat. Been one since around age 10. Will continue to be one until I'm planted with my Brown coat still on.

at 37 I saw Star Wars when I was 7 and have always been a fan of SciFi, I have always been a bit of a dreamer, and tried not to conform too much.

I have travelled, taken drugs (no harm in trying everything once) and now have given it all up and gone and got a family, 2 sprogs a wife and a small bu(S)iness. I have my own job and love the freedom, I do not aspire to being rich, I just appreciate what I have and get on with what is at hand. That is what I feel makes me a Browncoat.

All of the characters in Firefly live in a similar world to us, and want the same things. Even Jayne, though he won't admit it.

Yeah, ain't the 'coats just about the shiniest bunch of fans anywhere? (Not to mention so damn pretty :) I've lurked on some other types of fan communities (Star Wars, lots of videogame forums, etc) and the most immediate difference I noticed when I jumped onboard around here was how gorram friendly everyone was. Especially considering how much of this is taking place online (where people often forego the niceties of civilized culture) I think this really speaks to the type of people Our Little Show has brought together.

I'm with everyone else on this: I'll be a browncoat until the doctors pull the plug on my life support. (And Buddha help them if they try it when I'm trying to watch Serenity 12: Wash has a Thing :)

Amen to that Serenityseeker!

When I think about what a browncoat really is & what it means, like others here I found I was a browncoat long before Joss even dreamed up the show.

I have never been so totally into a show that I wanted to be part of a community or felt the need to spread the word, attend conventions, collect all the merchandise, or post on a message board. Firefly & Serenity are different though. They resonate with something deep inside me in a way nothing else has done.

My wife knows the deal, when I go, I go in my brown coat. I'm hoping ol' Saint Peter won't mind the brown coat, replica Mal pistol, or Blue Sun tee too much.

I can't say I've always been a Browncoat but I can say that I was always meant to be one. The show kinda opened my eyes a bit on not taking in everything people (particuarly government) say as truth. But among Browncoats there is a level of respect that I don't see with any other group. Even seeing that comrodierie (pardon the spelling if that's wrong) makes you want to be a Browncoat if you aren't. And if you are a Browncoat you want to spread the news, not just to get another show but b/c it is so awesome you have to share it with everyone you know!

As for when I was offically hooked, I'd say after seeing the pilot and being in Serenity Valley. What they say is true, once you're on Serenity you can never really leave.

Can't say anything that hasn't already been said. A friend of mine found these series and fell head over heels with it, since he's a pilot himself. I dunno if he quoted anyone else, but his line when he spoke of Firefly was;

"Joss got it right what Lucas never understood. We don't care about the heroic all powerful CGI Jedi, we just want the stories of the little guys, the Han Solo men in broken little ships etching out what they can."

So I borrowed the series and only planned on watching one episode a day, I ended up watching each disk a day, commentary and all. I was hooked.

Despite being painfully brief, Firefly and it's sequel-ish movie are tops on my list. I've been recommending them to everyone, and I occasionally find myself humming The Hero of Canton at work. (which is funny, it's a town 2 miles from me.)

I may not have been here from the beginning, but I consider myself a browncoat. And plan on being one even after FOX starts hunting us all down to cover up their incredible mistake.

'till the day I die.

Although new to the board i was a browncoat from first watching the pilot last summer, the real one! Although from DVD and not on Fox, I was quickly hooked. Only joined up here in Feb but I felt like I came home. *hugs*
And as some of me fellow browncoats have noted, that's what draws us to the BDS and BDM. It's like our home, our lives, aka the real world - we eke out our existance in this topsy-turvy world, do the best we can for "ours" be it family, friends. We try to be real good, okay, maybe just good, or all right at least. But's that how life goes. And maybe that's why those of us that are 40's (I'm 43) relate to it so well. Our dreams we had in our 20's haven't become reality, but we're happy with has happened. We still have dreams, but maybe a little more realistic and grounded. The world isn't all rosy, you can and do get hurt, emotionally, physically, financially. The grand scheme of things, those darn pesky politicians, can turn our world upside with a piece of legislation. Sound like the alliance?

Sharing this bond here on this board, and any other BDS/BDM board we may particpate in, is a 'verse filled with support, understanding, compassion, humour, well, you get the picture.

Like many of you, I have been a fan of some really great shows and movies. I am an Angel and Buffy fan. I like sci-fi movies...and have never, ever, ever felt the need to seek out like minded perfect strangers to bond with. Yet here i am, bonded with the best people in the 'verse. Yet here I am, buying ff related tee's etc over the net. Yet here I am going to my first con on my own- no significant other, spouse, friend traveling with me (i won't really be alone 'cause once I get there i will be surrounded by my fellow browncoats)

Yet here I am at fireflyfans.net and feeling welcomed and at home.

i'm a browncoat for life, and I hope my friends, that we will all still be here, discussing this 'verse, the shiny new show and whatever else interests us, 20 years from now.

I know this post has been longwinded and also know that my fellow browncoats understand the need to sometimes express oneself to the fullest.

You know it gets exhausting always being on the losing side. The things I'm most drawn to seem to be dying from lack of interest by the 'verse at large. Had never heard of Firefly but Serenity got great reviews in Chicago and wanted to see it in the theater. Missed it. Waited for it to be on DVD - always out at the video store. Rented it and got giddy. Went to work still giddy and couldn't stop talking about it - discovered a browncoat sympathizer. Next day his set of DVDs were on my chair. Home to watch as many as possible. Dreamed about the show, the characters. Found this website. Bought my own copies.

This a familiar tale, oft' repeated. But it is a happy happy place here. And as a shy reader of other people's postings for the past month, I've really enjoyed other people's stories. So I worked up the courage to say hello.

I do think that if Firefly hadn't been axed so soon and if it wasn't such an underdog, it wouldn't be so special (not in anyway discounting how really excellent it is script-wise, cast-wise, etc.). I'm a sucker for lost causes. But for the first time ever - the cause isn't really lost. Because all you guys are here, too.

Thanks.

I am a recently converted Browncoat and while I don't forsee myself dressing in costume or going to conventions, I find my love of the show comes from the images and ideas behind it, the idea of independence and freedom and fighting for what is right - not just in terms of true justice, but what is right for you and yours.

Firefly was a modern fairy tale without being cut in black and white... it was colored in shades of grey and brown and, if you study it hard enough, shows conflicts within humankind. Laugh if you want, because the gods know that overanalyzing television shows brings to mind the Comic Book Guy on the Simpsons, but Joss really did tap into some overarching mytharcs of the human experience.

What does that mean? It means that I am a Browncoat now and probably will be forever because the story captured my imagination and made me think and wonder and question and dream.

Makes her a home.

When I found Serenity/Firefly last October, it was just what I was looking for at that point in my life. I just started university, and was having a difficult time adjusting, i broke up with my first ever girlfriend (only for a month though, but it was still a big deal), and I was having a hard time at home with my parents.

Firefly gave me something to look forward to every night after studying. It had the laughs, the friendship, the longing to be free, and the dedication of the people in it. Despite being a work of fiction, it feels more real than most "real" things in the world do. Firefly/Serenity has heart.

I was a HUGE Star Wars fan when i was younger, which lasted about 6 years of my life. Looking back on that, I know that I would choose Firefly & Serenity ANY DAY over anything else in the entertainment medium. If I were stranded on a desert island with nothing but Firefly and Serenity, I would be one happy fellow.

I will forever be a Browncoat, and I'm damn proud of it. I don't care what anyone says.

Stay Shiny and Keep Flyin'.

"Coulda, shoulda, woulda".
"I aim to misbehave."
"Can't do something smart, do something right".

HOMER: "Oh Lisa, you and your stories; Bart is a vampire, beer kills brain cells. Now lets go back to that... building thingy... where our beds and T.V.... is".

I'm kinda new around here, and haven't read many posts. You see, for a long time I participated in the Star Wars fandom (see my name). But that group of people in general have turned into some of the sourest and unpleasant people to discuss things with... that it was unbearable for me anymore. But the level of friendly discussion and general comradery present in the posts I've read on this site has quickly shown me how enjoyable and level-headed the FF fandom is. I shed a tear when reading this thread; seeing the friendship that a television show can bring. I think I've found a new home.
