I saw a thread on here about everyone's favorite bands a while back and it got me to thinking... what songs remind you of Serenity, Firefly, and/or specific characters? Seemed like a good discussion topic.

Goodnight, and have a pleasant tomorrow.

'If Everyone Cared', by Nickleback. Off their album "The Long Road"

It doesn't make me feel for any specific character, but rather the 'Verse as a whole.

It's one of the only songs that I know the verses for, but not any of the chorus. Usually its the other way around.

Well, pretty much every song on the cd "The Road to Here" by Little Big Town. Also, lots of the stuff that Jerry Douglas does, some of Mickey Cochran ( http://www.folkofthewood.com/page1897.htm and http://www.folkofthewood.com/page1898.htm ), "Blaze of Glory" by Bon Jovi, and Big & Rich. Also, the song "Poison" by Alice Cooper (or the cover of it by Groove Coverage) remind me a lot of Saffron.

"If I hear the words 'that's final' coming out of your mouth again, they truely will be."

Said it before, I'll say it again: "Sound the Bugle" by Bryan Adams. It's Mal's trip from Serenity Valley to Serenity.

'She's Only 18' by the Chili Peppers always reminds me of River for no reason. Every verse of 'American Pie' makes me think of Firefly, but I think I'm projecting...

September 16. Calgary, Alberta. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Look me up, I'll be the pale, shirtless guy who's high off of osmosis.

I mentioned this before, "Fragile" by NIN is River and Simon. Give it a listen.

"6 Feet From the Edge" is Mal.

And another NIN song (love them yes) is "Right Where it Belongs." I've always pictured myself on the boat, taken over by River's mind and seeing things through her eye's as she/we walk through the ship seeing all the crew and ending up at the galley. I'd seperate from her and I'd be seeing the whole crew at the table from afar.... yes my mind daydreams alot.

If anymore come to mind I'll make sure to tell.

Someone mentioned this one as the perfect Simon/River song. Coldplay have a song that I think is called "Fix You". It never failed to make me think of Simon's dedication to River.

When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
COULD IT BE WORSE?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you.

some good tunes here.....
I've had a song on my mind for a while now, and it may not directly relate to the BDS or BDM, but it's one of those things that makes you feel something - like Firefly did for me... so, once again i will recommend a song by Imogen Heap... Hide and Seek....
(i feel like a pimp for this tune - but it's just a unique song and i like it a lot...) From the cd 'Speak for Yourself'

'All These Things That I've Done' by The Killers - all thanks to SaneAmy's fanvid set to that tune. I now can't think of anything else when I hear that song, it's changed in the way that Don't Stop Me Now did since I saw Shaun of the Dead, and I love both songs all the more for it. Thanks SaneAmy.

Johnny Cash - 'Highwayman' - the last verse is just...Mal.

Peter Gabriel 'San Jacinto' for Serenity Valley.

Placebo 'Meds' for River. Or Kasabian 'Club Foot'.

And I like that Coldplay 'Fix you' for the Tams, too - good call.

'Sixteen Tons' for Jayne,of course. But I get inspired by all sorts of music, and then the voices come... The Big Damn Fanfic I posted had a soundtrack.

Tom Petty - Learnin' to Fly

Pearl Jam - The overall feel of "Long Road" reminds me of our BDH for some reason. The other song on that disc is "I Got ID" which is perfect for Mal with regards to Inara.

Almost anything Johnny cash, with the exclusion of San Quentin, and the Folsom Prison Blues. I like "I've been everywhere" for just the fact that Mal in particular has. And for the obvious Mal/Inara bit, there's "It Ain't Me Babe" with J Cash and June Carter. anyway, yea, Johhny Cash was a cool musical dude.

Bill Withers- Ain't No Sunshine. A total Mal and Inara song
Bob Marley- Get Up Stand Up. A song for all the BROWNCOATS
Kanye West- Spaceship. One of those crap ain't working out and someday I'll fly away songs.
Any number of Wu-Tang songs.
Clutch- Escape From The Prison Planet and Spacegrass.
And of course The Highwaymen. When I first related Johnny Cash's part of the song with Captain Reynolds, lets just say I felt all warm and fuzzy.

was listenin to the rain song by led zep today and thinkin about firefly (as i do when im supposed to be revisin) and for some reason just totally reminded me of mal n nara. think the lines "speak to me only with your eyes" and "i never thought you would ever go" though i suppose as far as lyrics are concerned communcation breakdown would best describe their relationship.

in general i think 'the cowboy in me' by tim mcgraw is the most firefly song! i heard it off a fan video and just fell it love. you *have* to listen to it. tis great. and *not* dodgy (in a brokeback mountain way as its name suggests =D)

Chemical Workers/Process Man By Great Big Sea, always reminds me of Firefly. Has the maritime feel to it that I associate with Firefly. Mal refers to Serenity as "My Boat".

And Cirling Around the Moon by John Mellencamp is a good Mal/Inara song. Lyrics and overall sound fits the Firefly verse. Actually, there are a lot of songs off his CD that would do nicely.

I agree with the Johnny Cash and Alison Krauss recomendations too. The rest I will have to check out.

There's an Irish song, I'm not sure if it has an official author, called "The Foggy Dew" that reminds me of the Battle of Serenity Valley. Same sort of desperate bid for freedom kind of thing.

"Breathe In" by Frou Frou is a good Mal/Inara song.

"A Message" by Coldplay is another Mal/Inara. Totally agree with "Fix You" for the Tams too.

"Cymbeline" by Loreena McKennitt remins me of River too, though the words are Shakespeare, from the play of the same name. It made me think of Simon trying to tell her that she's safe and she doesn't have to go through whatever it was the Alliance was doing to her.

Fear no more the heat o' th' sun
Nor the furious winters' rages;
Thou thy worldly task hast done,
Home art gone, and ta'en thy wages.
Golden lads and girls all must,
As chimney-sweepers, come to dust.

The sceptre, learning, physic, must
All follow this and come to dust.

Fear no more the frown o' th' great;
Thou art past the tyrant's stroke.
Care no more to clothe and eat;
To thee the reed is as the oak.

The sceptre, learning, physic, must
All follow this and come to dust.

All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee and come to dust.

Fear no more the lightning flash,
Nor th' all-dreaded thunder stone;
Fear not slander, censure rash;
Thou hast finished joy and moan.

All lovers young, all lovers must
Consign to thee and come to dust.

No exorciser harm thee!
Nor no witchcraft charm thee!
Ghost unlaid forbear thee!
Nothing ill come hear thee!
Quiet consummation have,
And renowned by thy grave!

Slightly depressing maybe, but it always made me feel better for some reason.

Mine is an evil sugar high laugh! Bwahahahaha!

"Kingdom Come", if i'm not mistaken, by Coldplay. Whenever I hear it i think it would make a great fanvid spotlighting the relationships of the show (Mal/Inara, Simon/Kaylee, and i always think of Wash/Zoe by the campfire in OMR.). Also, oddly enough, Bo Bice, "U Make Me Better".
*ahem*
"Please don't tell me it's the ending/You're all i ever wanted, from the beginning/I know i let you down/I live with that forever/I wanna scream out loud/'Cause you're the only one that makes me better"
I always think of Mal's relationship with the ship, and our relationship with the show. Images that run through my mind include Mal waving to the drunkies in the Train Job as the ramp lifts, and most any shot of Serenity flying, especially at the end of the BDM.

"Come To Jesus" by Mindy Smith.

I could see this song playing in a hundred different Firefly scenes, from "kickin' ass and takin' names" scenes to "too scared to die" scenes to "not sure what the right thing to do is" scenes. It's not gospel. It's sort of like country folk rock where it starts off acoustic, rocks out for a while, and then ends up almost a cappella.

You can listen to the whole song on her myspace - go check it out!

ONTHEDRIFT

I've made a list of some of the songs to check out, thanks for the suggestions everyone.

And now for one of my own:

"Wires" by Athlete.

My pick was inspired by a fanvid that I stumbled upon at YouTube. I don't know if it's been linked here before, but I think it's one of the best I've ever seen. The clips are stellar and fit in well with the music. It deals with Simon and River's relationship. The lyrics of the song seem to tell their story quite well in my opinion, plus it's just plain pretty. I cannot listen to the song now without thinking of them and Firefly. The fanvid brought a whole new meaning to the song, and I literally get chills everytime I watch it. The promise the lyrics at the end hold: "I see it in your eyes... you'll be alright" fits perfectly with the hope that Joss gave us for River at the end of Serenity.

(Pausing for a moment of quiet weeping.)

I'm not sure how to provide a link, so I'll give it a shot in case you're so inclined to check the vid out yourself. I'd love to hear what someone else thinks of it.

Well, I'll expand my suggestions from the last time this came up - although I seem to keep coming back to Leonard Cohen. For Mal, "Everybody Knows":

Everybody knows the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost

Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
And everybody knows

And for River, there's a particular bit of "Teachers" that seems alarmingly appropriate:

I walked into a hospital
Where none was sick and none was well
When at night the nurses left
I could not walk at all

Morning came and then came noon
Dinner time a scalpel blade
Lay beside my silver spoon

Some girls wander by mistake
Into the mess that scalpels make...

Warren Zevon's "Frank and Jesse James" reflects Mal and Zoe's situation somewhat, but it seems to have a few apt words for the whole crew as well:

They rode against the railroads
And they rode against the banks
And they rode against the Governor
Never did they ask for a word of thanks

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I've got a handful of songs that make me think of Firefly and Serenity. I burned 'em onto a CD so I can listen at work, in the car, wherever...

"A Bunch Of Lonesome Heroes" by Leonard Cohen (Good call on "Everybody Knows", DixieFlatline. Nice avatar, too!) It just makes me think of our BDHs, because they ARE a bunch of lonesome heroes. Big. Damn. Heroes. Ain't they just?

A bunch of lonesome and very quarrelsome heroes
were smoking out along the open road;
the night was very dark and thick between them,
each man beneath his ordinary load.
"I'd like to tell my story,"
said one of them so young and bold,
"I'd like to tell my story,
before I turn into gold."

"Brothers In Arms" by Dire Straits. I can't think of a better song to link to Mal and Serenity Valley:

Quote:

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've witnessed your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

"Orange Sky" by Alexei Murdoch. Makes me think of Simon and River:

Quote:

And I had a dream
I stood beneath an orange sky
With my sister standing by
With my sister standing by
I said Sister, here is what I know now
Here is what I know now
Goes like this..
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, in your love, in your love

But sister you know I’m so weary
And you know sister
My hearts been broken
Sometimes, sometimes
My mind is too strong to carry on
Too strong to carry on

"Under The Milky Way" by The Church. Well, where else would they be?
"Big Sky Country" by Chris Whitley. If you've not heard his "Living With the Law" album, it's simply amazing. Great slide/dobro player, but it's not country. Nor quite rock. But it DOES rock! Too bad he died too young.
"Windfall" by Son Volt. Folksy alt-country-rock. Fiddles, mandolins, banjos, slide guitars, and wonderful lyrics, like:

Quote:

Now and then it keeps you running
It never seems to die
The trail's spent with fear
Not enough living on the outside

Never seem to get far enough
Staying in between the lines
Hold on to what you can
Waiting for the end
Not knowing when

May the wind take your troubles away
May the wind take your troubles away
Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel,
May the wind take your troubles away

Trying to make it far enough, to the next time zone
Few and far between past the midnight hour
Never feel alone, you're really not alone...

"Heroes" by David & David. Again, the lyrics just FIT:

Quote:

We can say I,
I just want to walk with you
As we do the things we know we have to do,
Always faithful and ever blue.
We do the things that we know we have to do.
And though we all know deep down in our hearts
That someday this will all fall apart, oh, for right now,
Yeah, let's just be heroes.

"Friend Of The Devil" by Lyle Lovett. It's a cover of a Grateful Dead song, but Lovett brings a certain western-ness to it.
"Southbound Again" by Dire Straits.
"The Devil's Right Hand" by Steve Earle.
"Living With The Law" by Chris Whitley. This is Mal, pure and simple. "In the hours/After washing/I do my dreaming with a gun."
"I Am a Rock" by Simon & Garfunkel. 'Cause Mal really does think he's a rock and needs no one else.
"Tear Stained Eye" by Son Volt.

Quote:

Walking down Main Street
Getting to know the concrete
Looking for a purpose from a neon sign
I would meet you anywhere the western sun meets the air
We'll hit the road, never looking behind

Can you deny, there's nothing greater
Nothing more than the traveling hands of time?
Sainte Genevieve can hold back the water
But saints don't bother with a tear stained eye

Seeing traces of the scars that came before
Hitting the pavement still asking for more
When the hours don't move along,
Worn-out wood and familiar songs
To hear your voice is not enough
It's more than a shame

Can you deny, there's nothing greater
Nothing more than the traveling hands of time?
Sainte Genevieve can hold back the water
But saints don't bother with a tear stained eye

Like the man said, rode hard and put away wet
Throw away the bad news, and put it to rest
If learning is living, and the truth is a state of mind
You'll find it's better at the end of the line.

Can you deny, there's nothing greater
Nothing more than the traveling hands of time?
Sainte Genevieve can hold back the water
But saints don't bother with a tear stained eye.

"Sleepwalk" by Santo & Johnny. I just picture Serenity sailing into the black when I hear this one.
"Into the Mystic" by Van Morrison. Again, makes me think of the crew just leaving their troubles behind and heading off to new adventures...

That's not a complete list, but those are some of my favorite Firefly-ish songs.

Mike

"Human beings are perhaps never more frightening than when they are convinced beyond doubt that they are right."
- Laurens van der Post

Hmmm...

I do think of Zoe when I hear 'Dani California'...

As for me, most of From Under The Cork Tree and 'Grand Theft Autumn' by Fall Out Boy make me think of Mal and Inara. And I have a feeling some of the stuff on their next album may too...

OnTheDrift, great link to fanvid. Is there a central location of all FireFly music videos, or at least a site with their links?

I just have to mention this again, because it's an amazing song for all FireFly and Serenity:
here's the perfect instant music video for Serenity: Play Billy Joel's "Good Night, Saigon" and skip through your DVD of Serenity on mute. The original song is over 7 minutes long, which gives you plenty of time to see what I mean! Even without trying, it fits amazingly to just about any part of the movie.

Glad you liked it Joy! I have yet to find a listing on this site of fan vids, however I am a newbie so if anyone can correct me... I would recommend going to Youtube and/or Google video and searching "firefly" or "serenity". There are many fanvids listed there. Sure there are some crap ones but many are quite good. Anyways it's a fun way to kill a few hours. I'll try your suggestion of "Good Night, Saigon", thanks.

"The Elephant Love Melody" from Moulin Rouge reminds me of Mal/Inara and "Accidently in Love" for all the couples on Serenity. There's a lot more I have on a CD but I can't think of them off the top of my head...

Me? Obsessed? With Firefly? Well maybe just a little

Who am I by Will Young for Simon and Kaylee. It just, well, fits. Also, wedding songs: Time of My Life, both the duet and the song of the same name by Toploader. Oh! Don't forget Drops of Jupiter by Train. Magnificent song.

See United 93.

Remember those who fell so that you could stand.

thought of another one: little known song from the animated movie Anastacia called At the Beginning With You. So Mal/Inara, or Simon/Kaylee!

also, I found a fanvid listing: http://www.browncoats.com/index.php?ContentID=42ea92f7736ea

That is a good question...hmmm...

Gotta go with the chorus of Satisfaction, by the Stones, for Mal to Inara: "I can't get no satisfaction..."

Just downloaded Mindy Smith, "Come to Jesus." I'm not so much a fuzzy wuzzy, as Mal would say, but the song fits and is beautiful to boot.

And i think anything ABBA would be good for Kaylee. They're just so...damn...happy.

Oh, i am a tweaked one, yes i am...

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I've tried to start compiling a list of vids over in the Blue Sun Forum. Under "Vids!" there are a lot of links up. No site that I know of has links to all of them; there are just too many!

Anything by Nickle Creek. They have a sort of blue grass merged with alternative rock feel. All and all, a very cool band.

One song that especially reminds me of firefly is "Pasures New". It's an instrumental song that has a bit of a mounrful feel to it. Just the spirit of the song with you here is, juxtaposed with the title the way it is -- very, very firefly.

CHRISTHECYNIC

Not Firefly so much as being a fan of Firefly, but I just heard the Smothers Brothers version of the following (their version is hilarious but the real lyrics are what remind me of being a fan):

To dream ... the impossible dream ...
To fight ... the unbeatable foe ...
To bear ... with unbearable sorrow ...
To run ... where the brave dare not go ...
To right ... the unrightable wrong ...
To love ... pure and chaste from afar ...
To try ... when your arms are too weary ...
To reach ... the unreachable star ...

This is my quest, to follow that star ...
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far ...
To fight for the right, without question or pause ...
To be willing to march into Hell, for a Heavenly cause ...

And I know if I'll only be true, to this glorious quest,
That my heart will lie will lie peaceful and calm,
when I'm laid to my rest ...
And the world will be better for this:
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach ... the unreachable star ...
