...or his best line "I'll be in my bunk!"

Have you found his solo rendition of The Balad of Jaynestown on disk 4 yet? It's absolutely fantastic.

I was laughing so hard while watching Jaynestown that my 11 year old daughter came running downstairs to see what was so funny, and I ended up restarting the episode so we could watch it together. She is now also a Browncoat (naturally).

Yeah, we're all still upset about the show being cancelled. You're not alone.

Check out the Serenity Day and Summer of Serenity events. Sorry, I don't have the link. But I do have these!

I think the reason the shows you like get cancelled is that you evidently have taste, and most of the TV audience does not. These TV networks have to cater to the lowest common denomenator, which means more reality shows, more crime dramas, and more dumb sitcoms.

I think that people who have a certain kind of taste when it comes to movies and tv shows end up being disappointed more often. Firefly (and another personal favorite of mine, Brimstone) and a lot of the shows people have mentioned (Farscape, G v E) fit a certain kind of genre. They are highly unusual compared to the normal fare of police or lawyer shows, 20 something comedies or situation comedies. They tend to be less episodic in nature and depend more on hooking an audience from the first show. Back when Firefly came out, these kinds of shows seemed to be very rare and not very popular (likewise, many people feel that the X-Files went downhill when the whole government conspiracy stuff started and they went away from the monster of the week shows). These days, these kind of shows are popping up everywhere: Lost, Desperate Housewives are the best examples and many others that did not survive more than one season (Surface, Invasion), even some reality shows that have season long "stories" like American Idol, while it seems that the more stand alone weekly episode shows are faltering.

They had a fantastic vampire show called "Ultraviolet" on a UK TV station. I think there were only about six episodes (UK shows normally have a lot less episodes since there are far fewer writers involved) but I happened to catch it and really enjoyed it.

The show was played very much as a cop show. Except it had vampires. Which of course were considered a terrorist threat since they were loosely organised and were dangerous to the public. It was completely unlike Buffy (which was my favourite show in the history of the 'verse 'till I saw Firefly) but it was smart, well written and had some genuinely heart stopping moments of suspense.

But it will never be renewed. Because the station that bought it thought it was a normal cop show. It was pitched by the writers as a normal cop show - one cop trying to uncover the secret "code 5". They just didn't mention to the TV show executives that code 5 meant vampires. And the show aired. And it was brilliant. And now it's never coming back.

It is sooo hard to live in a Democracy when the majority are idiots.

Dead Like Me and Carnivale were 2 show I rated right up there with FF and guess what......

Many shows now make alot of money through DVD sales (Angel/Buffy the best example) but sadly the studios don't have any system in place to take this into account when deciding to renew shows.

Wonderfalls, Joan of Arcadia, My So-Called Life. Like FF, these weren't watched by the masses, but were critically acclaimed, had a dedicated fan base, and weren't given enough time to garner the ratings their networks expected.

An overload of Reality TV has ruined television.
There's really nothing now that I watch with FF passion.

I almost forgot:

Welcome here, we're weird.

As you've no doubt noticed you've just come to a place where people will welcome you with open arms, lament with you, and other such stuff, they'll care about you and listen to you, talk with you, debate with you, support you, and so on because they're not just some random group of people, they're a family, and you're a part of it. As has been said, welcome home.

-

Nowhere Man, Dark Skies, The Pretender, so on.

But the one that gets me is Enterprise. For three seasons I could care less about it and indeed disliked it quite a bit, and it stayed on the air. Season four, I catch a little, I like it for a change, start watching and that's when they decide to cancel it.

Why is it only worthy of cancellation after I like it?

Welcome! Glad to see another recruit and browncoat find the 'Verse and then find us. We are holding till Mal gets back. Welcome home.

I don't know why it is that those shows I like get cancelled. Firefly, Angel, Wonderfalls to name a few that others have already mentioned. I love Wonderfalls and I have the DVD. It was a quirky, twisted very funny sarcastic show. I still laugh at each and every episode.

The shows that are different, genius and GOOD get cancelled. I was looking forward to another season of Invasion to!

Profit, Arrested Development, It's Like...You Know, Sports Night, Futurama... the list goes on.

But to cancel FF after just a HALF SEASON! That's the unkindest cut of all. :(

I'll miss other shows, too, of course. The West Wing, Buffy, Angel, and more; but those shows at least got to run for a decent amount of time, and although I loved them, I have to admit that it was probably time to wrap 'em up and let them go. Except Angel. I still wanna see if he slew that dragon!

Welcome to your new home, Geni. We share your angst; I'd wager that MOST of us here weren't watching when FF was originally aired (out of sequence, frequently pre-empted, and so on) on Fox. And the vast majority (dare I say "All"?) of us are still upset and disgusted that it was cancelled.

On the bright side, though, we DID get a shiny full-length major motion picture to gloat about. Not many half-season cancellations can make that claim. It's part of what makes us so damn special. Well, that and the fact that we're just too damn pretty to die. :)

I was so pissed when The Chronicle was cancelled. I quit watching SciFi shows after except for movies. And Brimstone was cool. I wanted to see all those tatoos of his disappear. Another one (not SciFi) Jack of All Trades. But then again I'm a Bruce Campbell fan (although I never got to see Brisco Country Jr but will when it comes out on DVD next month).

Clone High, Arrested Development, Action....

What do TV shows these days have to do to be respected enought to stay on air.

I think this whole site is a testament to how much one show can mean to a person, but the big channel execs rarely bring this into consideration.

Does anyone know if Sons & Daughters (2006) has been officially cancelled?

Wouldn't surprise if it was. A genuinely sweet & funny show, mainly improvised must just be too risqué !!!

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site and the fandom Geni! Glad to have you here amongst the ranks of the browncoat faithful. Make yourself at home.

You are most definitely not the only one roped in immediately by Firefly. I think everyone here pretty much was from the start. Unfortunately, like you, not enough people watched it while it had it's short run. Fox being Fox, pulled the plug without giving the show, Joss, or our cast a fair shake.

Screw 'em! We don't need them. We got the BDM made, the comic series, and we're still flyin'. If we keep expanding the fanbase like this, the Powers That Be will have no choice but to sit up and take notice.

So, get out there and spread the word. Tell everyone you know about the series and the movie. Get them to buy the DVDs. Give DVDs as gifts (Father's Day is coming!).

Take care and keep flyin'!

STICK

TV exec shows are always quick to cancel any shows deemed 'original' and 'Sci-fi' because they don't fit into a "formula for success". I guess Firefly was doomed before the first episode was ever made. If you really think about it you can classify 90% of all shows on tv into roughly 3 categories; sitcom, drama, or game show. I don't count 'reality' since imho reality tv is just drama with a generally lower budget and the actors are 'real' people

Anything that doesn't fit into these categories usually gets shoved into crappy time slots where no one will watch it, and later cancelled.

Yea, seems no one's quite gotten over loosing the show (both those who watched on f*x and newcomers). The fact the BDM (Big Damn Movie) got made gives some hope for the future, though.

I agree w/ most of the lost shows mentioned above...John Doe, was another I wanted to see more of. W/ tv being the modern opiate, shows that make people think or have to pay too much attention to don't seem to last (hard to forget the world if you have to process the information you receive). Shows like Lost and the X-files seem to be the exception. I think timing is the key to a lot of it, only a couple of clever, quality shows seem to be able to exist at the same time.

Far as I see it, you people been given the shortest end of the stick ever been offered a human soul in this crap-heel 'verse. But you took that end, and you - well, you took it. And that's - Well, I guess that's somethin'.

first of all you say near obsessive and i have to correct ya most of us are far beyond obsessive and moved to compulsive. also i have to agree with the posts that say you must have good taste since i find myself in the same boat. i think about 2 shows i start watching per year get cancelled. so i have decided this year in order to save show from being cancelled not to start watching any new shows. ok that's not true i just don't have the time to watch any new stuff.

I used to love that Sledgehammer when I was younger... "Trust me, I know what i'm doing" muahaha he was a classic. It was silly but it made me laugh. like the episode where Hammer hires a video called target practice or something like that and gets home puts it on his Tv and its a picture of a target and a voice saying shoot me shoot me, so he pulls out his magnum and blows the Tv apart... hahah.. u probably had to be there.. SUPERFLUOUS

Why are these type of shows canceled? Lets take a little history lesson...
Firefly... CANCLED
Farscape...CANCLED
John Doe...CANCLED
Macygver...CANCLED (I loved that show)
Angel...CANCLED
Arrested Development...CANCLED
Anything show with quality... CANCLED
See the pattern everyone?

Naturally I'm devastated.
Why did they cancel Firefly?
Who knows?
Why don't they care?
Because they’re rich.
Why do we care?
Because we're Browncoats.

But lets face it. Can we really rationalize with executives? Their one suit away from being a Reaver themselves.
Their the sort of people that would give Firefly 1/2 a season and gladly give the Brady Bunch five. Their the sort of people who think 'Spice World: The Movie', was quality entertainment. Their the sort of people who would only re-amp the show if the cast agreed to play it naked and rename the show 'Loveboat 2500' (I wouldn't mind that last point actually).
I'm even considering attending a support group. Sure its Alcoholics Anominous, but they don't have to know.
Be it what it would, I don't really care 'why' the show has ended. All I care about now, is that the show has ended and now I'm pinning...

you know i they released both seasons of sledgehammer on dvd, and i of course have them, but it really is alot more cheesey than i remembered it. however it still makes me laugh everytime. it had all your classic steriotypes the angry captain, the sexy smart female cop who does all the work, the dumb guy who likes his big guns what more do you need. script writers and plot lines come on give me a man intimately in love with his 45 magnum thats a show.

I used to think I was cursed because if I liked a show it would always be cancelled.

I'm still mad about Cupid being axed. And Tucker. And the US version of Touching Evil. And Boomtown. And Brimstone, Wonderfalls, Farscape, Sports Night... the list goes on. I watch it, it dies. So, I've switched to waiting till and intersting show comes out on DVD and watching them then. I think I can save Veronica Mars by doing this. So far it seems to be working.

Sadly, my powers of show cancelation do not work on Big Brother or any other "reality" show. I tried. The TV gods hate me.

Heck I didn't even know that Firefly was my favorite show until last month! I never heard of it....well back in 2002 I didn't watch much TV with the little one buggin the heck out of me and all.

I go to a friend's house last month and he tosses in the Train Job episode and I was floored. After the ep he informs me when it was released and that it was cancelled. Talk about going from High to Low in zero time.

So here I am. Bought the series and Serenity and watched them already. Taking them with me next week on a business trip to watch them again.

Awesome show!

One show I loved that didn't make it past season one was the Law and Harry McGraw. Jerry Orbach was one of my Favs!

I'm glad these shows got cancelled. They were stupid like you for watching them u turd.

You have a very bad attitude 'XeroGravityAdvanced'. Haven’t you ever heard the expression 'to each of their own’?
I was just making conversation tis’ all. And besides, I don’t care what you think (being the ‘turd’ that I am). All that matters to me is what 'I' like.
If you have an opinion, by all means say what you feel... But don't go and bigot other peoples tastes and discriminate them 20,000 miles away.
That’s not nice.

Have we sent the don't shoot us we're pathetic transmission yet?
