Don't know if anyone will even read this thread--or even what it would mean to if someone did.

Today I got home from work and discovered that my Navy-issued dog tags--which I've worn for 11 years--were gone. I went back to work and looked for an hour, to no avail. I went to every other place I'd been today--no luck. I even looked under the seats of my car, but found nothing.

I don't know if you can relate, but those were truly precious to me. Sure, they weren't especially valuable--probably only a couple of bucks. But they represented 10 years of service with honor.

I wore them in bootcamp, through my transformation from civilian to sailor. I wore them on my first cruise in the Mediterranean. I wore them all the way through a marriage. I wore them to Afghanistan (when I thought they might actually be used for the purpose for which they were designed) and in Iraq (ditto). And when I got out of the Navy, I kept wearing them. I quit shaving on Saturdays, but I kept wearing my dog tags. I quit carrying things in my left hand (never know when you might have to salute), but I still wore my dog tags. I even learned to use 12-hour time--but never did stop wearing those dog tags. They came to represent a very formative, and significant, time in my life--a time I'm extremely proud of.

I don't think losing any other possession would hit me this hard. I just don't know what to say.

I have never earned anything that meaningful so I can't claim to relate. But I do sincerely hope you'll find them. Keep looking--or try this: stop looking, sit in a comfortable chair and let your mind wander back to the last time you saw them. Imagine seeing them and their surroundings. Something in the image might give you a clue. This sometimes works for me when I've lost something.

I'm sorry about that Casual, I've lost a few things that were precious to me but to lose 11 years of memories that came with those tags.

My best advice is to think of the LAST time you can remember wearing them. I know a lot of people say this but it works. When you got up were they on? If not check under, around on the bed (check in between the frame and box spring)

Maybe when you were making breakfast, is your garbage an open lid? Were you doing dishes? Do your bottom cupboards have a little lip on the bottom?

Showered? Maybe under the mat (if you have one.)

Think if you had them at work what activity you were doing that would have made them slip off.

Your probably used to hearing them jingle when your working and walking. Can you remember (subconciously) when that familiar sound was not heard? You have to think hard on that one.

Your used to the feel and weight of them. Again subconciously can you remember when things felt a little off? You said you noticed when you got home but was there a time when the familiar feel of the chain wasn't resting on your neck?

You really have to go back through your day to try to see if you can pick up on the difference but I've found it helped. Many a times I've gone back over things. I've found them that way. I'd hate to think those tags of which mean so much are gone.

You have to sit down, relax, and go over your entire routine and using those tips hopefully you'll have an idea of where they may have disappeared to.

I sincerely hope that you find them soon. I know what its like to lose something really special and being a military spouse I understand. The whole "not knowing" issue will drive you crazy so try to stay calm, they could pop up when you least expect it. Take Care!

Secondly, having never served in the military, I'm wondering if there's anyway someone who found them could return them to you? I mean, is there info on them by which a stranger could return them to you -- in the eventuality that you misplaced them in a public place where someone else was likely to run across them?

Thirdly, thank you for your service. Those of us who haven't served, but enjoy the fruits of your sacrifce can never thank you enough.

I know what you are going thru. I lost mine around the time I got divorced and my things were in a tizzy. I still wish I had them because I had my Episcopal Service Cross on the same chain.

Do dog tags still have your ssn# on them? If so you might want to call the credit reporting agencies and put a fraud block on your credit file. It's very easy to do-all 3, Equifax, Transunion and Experian have web sites where you can do this. They say that if you notify one all 3 will be notified but don't trust it. Do all 3 yourself.

I just had to do it myself when the Veteran's Administration lost all the personal info on everyone that served from 1978 until today-all 26 million of us. If anything it'll stop all those annoying credit card mailings.

I can relate totally. Long long ago, I got home from work to realize that the silver promise ring that my then lover (later husband, now ex-husband) was no longer on my finger. It had been handcrafted for HIS parents when they first fell in love, and was precious to ALL of us.

I spent hours going through every step of the restaurant. The entire garbage bin was emptied and dug through item by item- I took the pipes out of the sinks, checked the grease trap. I never found it.

Most people recognize how important a soldiers dog-tags are to them. If someone finds them I'm sure they'll make an effort to find you.

be sure to check carefully through the laundry, sometimes when you pull a sweater or t-shirt off over your head something like that can tangle up in it (and if you are distracted you won't notice).

other possibilities is that the chain broke and it fell down at some point, phone any stores where you might have been...

I hope they turn up.

Aren't dog tags designed so you DON'T lose them? So SOMETHING must have happened... do you remember taking off your sweater somewhere, or getting caught on something? It's the only possibility that comes to mind if you didn't lose them at home - something must have had enough force to break the chain, which isn't really easy.
Or was the chain long enough so you could slip it over your head?
If you lost them, there's always hope because your name should be on them, and maybe the finder throws them in a mail box or something. I dunno how that works in the U.S.

I really hope you find them, and even if you don't, it will not diminish what you have done for your country, your people, and your fellow man. You wear that pride in your heart, not around your neck.

I know, I know, it still sucks.

In my faith, when we lose something precious, we say:
"Inna lillahi wa inna alaihi raj-ee-oon"
which means "to Him do we belong and to Him do we return."
Say this several times (in odd numbers) and just see if they don't turn up!
Can't hurt to try. Have the faith and keep it!

I think you do, and you've said it quite eloquently.

I own a yin yang pendant that I wear constantly. Sterling silver, with an intricate spiral pattern in the yang side. You're probably thinking, "If only I'd packed them away..." but things like that aren't meant to be kept locked away. They're meant to be worn to remind you of where you've been and maybe help you determine where you're going.

Someone may have told you already that maybe this means you're supposed to move on to some new stage of your life. It may also mean that you're supposed to make some kind of realization before the tags will come back to you.

I'll just start praying now that some kind soul has found them, and is working on getting them back to you.

I can feel your pain Casual.

I have had my dog tags for 19 years. They saw me through boot camp, jump school, Ranger training, Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm and more than a few hard spots.

I wore them every day until about two years when they fell off on a hiking trip. I thought the were gone for good. We searched miles of trails and couldn't find them. It really bothered me as they had been with me so long.

Imagine my surprise when I get a package from the Dept of the Army with my tags in it six months after losing them. Seems another hiker found them and turned them over to a recruiter who tracked me down and had them shipped to me.

I really do hope you find your tags my friend.

I truly feel for you, Causal. As much as I try to not have my self worth tied up in material things, it is the objects that are wrapped up within the sentiments of time and distance traveled whose loss wounds me the most.

When I was 8 I lost the watch that belonged to my grandmother. I was playing in the leaves in the sideyard and took it off so I wouldn't harm it, leaving it wrapped around the antenna of the hood of the neighbor's car. They drove off without me noticing, and I never found it. I had to tell my mother. She had trusted that I would take care of it, and I let her down. It affected me greatly.

I truly hope you find your tags. They may yet come back to you.

Well, I found them! I'd narrowed the losing of them to my work (in a warehouse until fall semester), and as I stood at my bench I was just overwhelmed by the thought that they were there in the building with me, but that I'd never find them. I said a little prayer, something like, "If it's not too much to ask, I'd like my dog tags back" and went back to work. Half an hour later I just felt the urge to look under some rollers by my bench. Keep in mind that my wife, myself, and a coworker had scoured every inch of my workstation and come up empty. But lo and behold, there they were, right under the rollers! What a relief.

That is a very good idea to make a second set of dog tags. I have my grandfather's from the Korean War era, but I actually wear a duplicate set of them. It's one of the few things I have of his, and it would kill me if anything happened to them.

We actually have the same name and bloodtype, so if I'm in an accident it won't get me in trouble!
