I am totally serious. I've just been on a site that researches them, www.snopes.com, and it talks about how prevalient they are.
We need a good Urban Legend for Firefly and/or Serenity. A truth, a half-truth, an embroidered truth, and all-out falsehood; something that will catch the attention of the public and can be e-mailed from person to person.
Ideas?

I mean things that people outside the fandom will be morbidly fascinated with. Something that will give them the overwhelming urge to go out and buy the DVD's just to see if it's really true

You mean like the subliminal image inserted into one of the later episodes that consists of 1 frame with the entire crew standing directly facing the camera stark raving naked. I don't remember which scene it is so people will have to watch them all in frame advance mode to spot it.

Hey, this one is true: the scene she filmed was deliberately filmed so she could be easily replaced with a minimum of re-shooting.

Oh no, we can try to find something that actually looks all weird and give a specific episode; they'd still have to buy the series. Even on netflicks there would be at least four hours on a disk they got; that would be sufficient...

Ooh. Got a better one. If you take the first seven words spoken by Mal after timestamp 1:07 in each episode and re-arange the letters it reveals a crucial plot point from the seventh - and presumably final - Harry Potter book.

Oh hey, here's another one! In Jaynestown, I could have sworn that Jayne actually said "F*ck the law" when he was talking to the mudders. (I know it's probably supposed to be "fought the law" but that is not how it sounded to me the first few times...)

You're good at this Dave.
I like that one a lot. And your first one actually.

Where are your ideas coming from? Your first one made me thing of Fight Club were they actually did insert a single frame of a cock. The film makers admit it and they even refer to it in the movie. Not as brave as yours however becaue you don't know who it belongs to. In your idea, you get lots of genitals and a face to go with each and every one.

Hey actually we don't need to make it up. Firefly is the only show that aired 13 episodes on national t.v. all of which violated ( technically) the Federal Decency code due to audible, understandable swearing. Think about it. It may have been in chinese, but according to the code that doesn't matter swearing in any language ( well F word, S word, and derrivations of those two) are prohibeted and any one whoe violates it pays a huge fine...well Soth Park just paid the fine for their s word show, but Firefly stands as the only show to violate that code in every single episode and never be fined!!!

Well, they only use "F" and "S" in the first one, technically.
Wait, I think War Stories too, although it's translated as "mother-humping" but that would work...
We don't want to have the Feds going after them, though, telling them now they have to pay a fine.

Lots of filmakers insert the occasional one or two frame shots of odd little images - particularly in animation. It's not always nudity either. Any strange or unrelated image can get used in this way.

The original idea was that the image would be seen and processed subconsiously while not being noticed by the conscious mind. There were experiments using the technique for advertising on the theory that people would see the advert and act on it without realizing they had been manipulated. Later studies have shown that the whole subliminal advertising thing doesn't work so now it just happens because filmakers think it's a giggle.

Here's a strange and creepifying one that sometimes appears with the release of other movies...

In River's Reaver fight scene, one of the stuntment actually got caught in the throat with her axe. Although the axe is mostly harmless silicone, she swung it with such force the core of it inflicted a debilitating wound to the larnyx and the stuntman can't speak to this day. And here's the creepifying part...because the shot was soooo good they kept it and if you look closely you can see it in the movie.

To make it even more plausible, make up a realistic sounding but totally fictitious name (one that doesn't appear in the credits) of the stuntman. If someone asks why he doesn't appear in the credits say it is because of ongoing litigation.

Supposedly...I'm just passing this on, you understand, but supposedly Joss got the CGI team to create images that can be seen in Serenity's exhaust. The pilot episode shows them best, an image of Buffy if I'm not mistaken. Also, when Jayne says "let's moon 'em", part of the exhaust definately looks someone's (Nathan's?) backside.

I understand he did the same thing in the movie, but I'm not sure what the images are.

I could see a really successful urban legend get launched from the kiss between Inara and that female ambassador... We could start a fake "boycott Fox" campaign in which we all complain about all the lesbian sex in the show and how we're so offended. That would sell so many box sets. Seriously, wouldn't that work?

Well I'm surprised no one's mentioned using the fruity oaty bars scene. Where a vewier watched it, got mesmerized and was compelled to do something. What I dunno. Maybe a battered wife who saw the film at a friends and after seeing that one clip went home straight away and kicked the ass of her beating husband.

Or it just made people hungry for fruity oaty bars.

We got a good one staring us right in the face so to speak-and it's true-Nathan's backside. Swirled over by dust by SciFi and obscured by the computery special effect later as he walks up the ramp. What conspiracy is this?-depriving the heterosexual women of the world a nice rump roast.

Combined with the s and f word in Chinese, Zoe and Wash in their bunk, Jayne,Kaylee and Simon, Inara's lesbian scene for the guys and lesbians (what part of "I'll be in my bunk" don't you understand?)and River naked in a box, and VIOLENCE AND TORTURE it covers just about everything.

AND THIS GREAT ALL INCLUSIVE SHOW WAS CANCELLED BY FOX!

The sales should skyrocket.

You know, I would have thought the naked River scene, the naked Mal scene, and the various naked Inara scenes would be enough to keep any hot-blooded human interested. Not to mention shirtless Simon and Jayne. Of course, I think anyone who actually sees the series can't help but love it, the problem is the staggering number of people who haven't seen it.

Firefly already IS it's own urban legend, namely "The Myth of that One TV Show that Everyone Seems to Have Heard Of but No One Has Time to Watch." Sorry if that's a bit pessimistic, but another potential convert seems to think he has no time to slip in the DVD I wanted to give him. And he's a political science major, you'd think he'd appreciate the future the show displayed.

Oh - I got one!!

The executive at F**X () who had the series axed before it screened was under pressure to justify this, so he consulted several occultist practisioners - including Tarot readers and at least one medium - and mathematicians from Cal Tech to decide in which order the episodes had to be shown to gain the poor ratings he so desperately wanted! Add to this the rumour of a love/relationship interest with someone (anyone) who either was replaced on Firefly or was facing the end of their contract on Buffy and you get something quite plaussible - after all I have never heard of a realistic reason why the series was shown out of sequence in the US first time around...

NB(I have no idea what Cal Tech is but it's usually referred to in American films when justifying some theorem ()

Oh - my back hurts - goin' to lie down some more before I get into this again... Magda x x

Did you guys hear about how Joss Whedon died in a car crash before the DVD set came out? Apparently, the remaining producers didn't want this to bring down sales so they hired a (much more attractive) look-a-like to impersonate Mr. Whedon. But Tim Minear, disgusted with this plan, put hidden messages at the last minute into the three unaired episodes proving that Joss is dead and, oddly enough, Wash is still alive.
