I assume the movie being referenced is "Shivers", which has been widely cited on the 'net as being an influence:

http://imdb.com/title/tt0073705/

My brother, who spends much more time than me watching movies (and particularly older movies) assures me that liberal "borrowing" is a common phenomenon in Hollywood, with a long history that goes way back.

My theory: since the largest movie audience is teenagers (or so I gather), it makes sense to keep updating successful formulas, whether this involves existing franchises or old formulas packaged in shiny new wrappers. Sadly that means us older theatre goers have literally seen it all.

Aside: I used to watch movies at friends' houses. A favorite game was to write down how the movie would turn out after the first fifteen minutes. My success rate was depressingly high, which is probably why I stopped going.

First, my vote.

Second, I'm going to go see 'Snakes on A Plane'.

Reason? Movie goers and actors (Samuel L Jackson) had a lot of input into how it was made. They heard the title and got behind it. Told the execs what they wanted. Even if it ends up being a flop, ya gotta respect fans and actors standing up to the execs like that.

It's actually older than Hollywood. See Shakespeare.

Hell, see Euripides.

I don't get why Ultraviolet was so horrible. I mean, I know why, and it was terrible, but the guy who wrote and directed it also wrote and directed the pretty good movie Equilibrium with Christian Bale. I just don't understand it. From good movie to really really bad movie.

And why execs back Ultraviolet but not Serenity 2 is beyond me.

simple, (from what I gather) Ultraviolet is one of those new movies that focuses on ACTION, ACTION, ACTION!!!! and very, very, very *continues saying "very" for a few weeks* little on things like plot, and charecter development.

now, because most movies-goers are around my age (15-18) all they care about is (can you guess?) ACTION, ACTION, ACTION!!!!, very few ppl my age want plot, and charecter development.

I see your puzzlement, although I believe Equilibrium's budget was quite a bit smaller than Serenity's: maybe it was easier for Equilibrium to be profitable?

I did enjoy Equilibrium, perhaps partly because I expected so little from it, and I do like Milla Jovovich. But you're saying "Ultaviolet" is maybe not even worth a rental?

Equilibrium actually had a character arc, it said something about human emotions, it built up to Christian Bale's great action sequences. It sold the action, and the action was great.

Ultraviolet took the formula for Equilibrium, but reversed it. Equilibrium saved CG effects for moments when they were most needed and best implemented, and they looked good; Ultraviolet used them all the time and they looked like crap. The action in Equilibrium was great to watch; Ultraviolet's was boring and laughable, except for that flaming sword scene. That was okay. But the rest was terrible. The story was the dominant factor for most of the movie in Equilibrium; Ultraviolet put the story on the backburner and just tried to do action all the time. Plus, Equilibrium had real sets; Ultraviolet just had crappy lights and glass. Equilibrium didn't have horrible one-liners; Ultraviolet had terrible ones. And the exposition in Ultraviolet?! Oh god that was horrible! Its not a good thing when 15 minutes into the movie I'm already laughing at the poor writing. Its not worth a rental. Especially when Equilibrium can be rented.

But what puzzles me is why execs support Ultraviolet (a terrible movie) and not Serenity 2 (based on the greatest story on film). Can't they make a decision based on the quality of a movie for once?

Uh, yup! I agree.

And, nope! Do not rent it. And for gorramsakes don't buy it! Unless you need a fancy coaster and a spare jewelbox laying around. I'd recommend a trip to Target or Walmart for the shiny coasters and such. You can get coasters and mess of jewelboxes fer the same price too!

The flaming sword was cool, tho.

The movie was supposed to be some kind of a tribute to comicbook camp. Insulted the heck out of me seein hows I'm a big comic book fan! Struck me more as some kind of attempt at a visual artsy form of Engrish. Everything about it screamed....

"Somebody set us up the bomb! For great justice."

God that acting was hurtful to watch!

Ahh... smell the discord, the anguish.. the hatred... yes my children.. Let me add to the fire.

Ghostbusters 3 has been 'greenlighted'. Bill Murray, time and again, has refused to give a nod to Akroyd and Raymer's begging to continue the series, so they are replacing him in the series...

...with....

...(still holding breath?)...

....

.... Ben Stiller!!

Yes, thats right, take one of the most influential actors of the Mid 80's and replace him with the hack from "Zoolander".

Here is a movie that was produced recently that was worthless. Snakes on a Plane... Yep, even the title sucked.

Star Trek is planning on one more attempt to revitalize the movie chain disaster I believe in Nov 08.

GL is planning to continue his destruction of the Star Wars series by bringing a TV show to light.

Now go, my apprentices... Do what must be done! Muah

Ben Stiller!
BLASPHEMERS!!!

As for Trek....I'd prefer a series based on MJS's treatment.

I'm gonna have to disagree. Although, I agree that some (okay, most) of the movies y'all have said didn't need to be made. I enjoyed, and/or am looking forward to many of them.

Snakes on a Plane! I'm definitely looking forward to that, even if the movie sucks, I love the ads and the cult hit thing attracts me.

That being said, I would rather have Serenity 2 instead of any movie...ever...but I do enjoy other movies, and tv shows, in the meantime.

To the uneducated browncoats who rejected Michael Mann's Miami Vice. This just shows what inferior knowledge can produce. However, the Alliance enjoy the gritty, realism that Miami Vice was. The movie is not like the TV show. End Communication.

LORDKILBORN

2 movies that were a total and utter waste of time (I know, my wife and I got them from Blockbuster and WASTED our time with them!):

The Family Stone
Prime

TFS got a solid C- from me; Prime got a D from me (just because there's always room for much worse!) and an F from my wife (who isn't as forgiving).

I miss Firefly something awful... I was in med school back in 2002 when it aired and it was a breath of fresh air on Friday night after a long, hard week.

I'm going to start a new thread on a new effort to get a second season started. Spread the word and let's get this thing going grassroots again!
