Happy Birthday to the beacon that lit the way for all televised SF to follow. Without Star Trek, there'd be no Firefly, no Battlestar Galactica, no Farscape, no Stargate, and definitely no DS9.

May the franchise live long and prosper.

I think the latter is more accurate about the state of the franchise than the former.

Ground breaking stuff of course and what's more, a lot of it is still so damned good and watchable today.

You guys know about the new High Definition version on the way, complete with new effects, right?

Happy birthday Trek

I see that now that you're hitting 40, you're babies (TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise) have left the nest (or loading bay in this case), and you yourself are getting some work done (the re-touching of the classic eps), as well as planning on going out on the town with some arm candy (the J.J. Abrams helmed STAR TREK XI/prequel). Here's hoping you'll be hitting your second wind soon.

If the spinoff's were children, who'd they be? The animated series is probably the first child put up for adoption and somewhat forgotten, whose now old enough to be asking who it's biological parents were. TNG is probably the prodigal son. DS9 is the third child that, while respected isn't fully embraced. Voyager is kind of the red-headed step child that while it takes most of the beatings, is still eager to please and has a tenacity you can't help like. And Enterprise is the fifth kid that has no pictures in the family photo albums, and has all the hand me downs.

I'm interested to see how the re-done episodes of TOS will look. Just as long as we don't reach George Lucas proportions of change, I'll be happy I think. Does anyone know if they've posted listings yet? I read that they debut on the 16th on HD stations, but has anyone heard anything about regular over-the-air broadcasts?

star trek wasnt aired until teh 8th of september, 1966. but early happy birthday to it, its philosophy influences my whole life

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one, so I joined starfleet and was stationed at the SGC to fight the covenant, whos gate happens to be down, and through which I must cast the ring from whence it came. It was our last best hope for peace but it failed so millions of voices cried out and were suddenly silent but there was no spoon and also no fate but what we make for ourselves.

A friend and I did something like this once, defining all the Treks as if they were people.

Original series: Bold, brash, idealistic, and intelligent. Like Kirk himself, a young adventurer out to make a name for himself and blaze trails.

TNG: A bit older, more cerebral. University educated, confident, and still idealistic, but now with a deeper understanding of what it really means to be ethical.

DS9: The drill sergeant. Dark, gritty, and willing to show you just how much you suck, how nearly-impossible it is to live up to the standards the previous generations have set, and how inevitably you will fail. No matter how hard you fight your nature, you're gonna lose, and the monster's gonna get out. Bad things happen to good people, bad people get rewarded, and your entire world is going to be ripped apart around you --but you will go on. Through the pain, and the fear, and the failure, you will persevere because it's worth it!

Voyager: The popular girl. Flashy and showy, with the latest fashions. Always ready to do anything to fit in. She's smart, maybe even brilliant, but she hides it 'cause it's not cool. Great potential, just buried where no one can see it.

Enterprise: The new kid. Bold, brash, idealistic, and intelligent. A young adventurer out to make a name for himself and blaze trails. Just like the original series, but with its own identity. Wasn't willing to play by the popular kids' rules, and everyone who could've helped just saw someone trying to be their old friend, and called him a poser without actually getting to know him.

Those are pretty good analogies. But what about the shorter lived animated series? People always seem to forget that one. Like it's been in DVD news recently in that it's finally coming to DVD, but you never really hear anyone talk about it. Which is odd, because apparantly it introduced a # of TREK staples, like the holodeck.

I loved the ep of FUTURAMA where they made fun of it with the holoshed. "The holoshed is on the fritz again. The holograms are real.";"Damn, the last time that happened I got slapped with three paternity suits."

Happy birthday, Trek. Watching reruns of the original series as a kid helped nurture my taste for sci-fi. Watching Next Gen the first time around made it blossom and grow

I usually consider the animated series to be part of TOS --same characters, same ship, same general environment. The animated ones just had better effects and nonhumanoid aliens (like Arex).

aha! so as i scroll the forums I find you have returned from your exile. where and when are you seeing trek? firefly and trek follow a similar patter, both had a pilot that was rejected by the studio with requests for a second with alterations. both began in dath slots, and sufered bad ratings according to (in treks case)polls that were later proven in error, a miraculous amount of fan support brough trek its third season adn firefly its movie, and firefly has time to simmer, trek made it through about a decade of inactivity, living off of conventions and a cartoon alone. firefly could pull through

Can you identify the parts and where they are from. I have everything before the last best hope for peace bit and i don't know the covenant part either. Sorry, but it sounds familiar, and i just think it is awesome.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one(Firefly, who could've guessed?), so I joined starfleet(startrek) and was stationed at the SGC(star gate command from SG-1) to fight the covenant(Halo trilogy, the video games), whos gate happens to be down(Enders game), and through which I must cast the ring from whence it came(LOTR). It was our last best hope for peace but it failed(Babylon 5, a groundbraking escellent saga that no one seems to remember, but I grew up watching) so millions of voices cried out and were suddenly silent(star wars) but there was no spoon(the matrix) and also no fate but what we make for ourselves.(terminator 2)

Thanks! That's awesome. I didn't catch the reference to Ender's Game, sort of got the matrix, and didn't get Halo or Star Wars. I remembered B5 though. Anyway, thanks! It's awesome.
