Alan's wishes for his character

Lately there has been much discussion about the possibility of Wash's survival in the BDM, however, I'd like to point out another consideration. A while ago, I recall reading, and I forget if it was here aore somewhere else, that Alan actually wanted his character to be killed eventually, either because he wanted to leave the show or because that's just how he wanted it. Is there any truth to this, and if there is, then does it completely seal te fate of Wash in any future productions should they be made?

Alan knew that in the movie Serenity his dialog was cut short so he assume he would be getting killed off. Joss kept that till the time called for it quiet. Now in Briscoe County Jr Pistol Pete kept getting killed and brought back. I am still mad about Shepherd.

This seems to be a very recent rumur; I had never heard it before this week.
I don't think Alan wanted his character to die. He did say that he was glad it wasn't a lame, cliche death (i.e. *choking voice* "Ugh, go on without me... And listen... I've got three bullets left... but I'll give the bastards hell!") but he never said he wanted the character killed or was glad about it or any of that. And he did sign a contract for three movies, though no one is yet sure if or how he'll appear.

Alan has said that he felt Wash would have been a good character to kill off in a second or third season, but whether that's the same as wanting to be killed off is another thing. I believe you can find the actual quote in the official Serenity magazine.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Grounded is correct. Back when Firefly was on the air Alan had mentioned that Wash would be a likely candidate for being killed off in a second season. This info was brought out in interviews back after the release of the BDM.

The only person that I remember (either I read it,saw it in an interview or was something in the back of the BDS or BDM) was Nathon say that he wanted his character killed off before the shown had gotted to the "jump the shatk" phase. The OOG eps would have been ideal for this if it would have been during season 7 or at a time when FF had done every kind of story they could think of and the show was becoming boring. By then I think a show gets to the point where all the actors are wanting to bail. FF was a long time away from from that. Alliance = evil F*X.

Good info you guys mention. I still think it would have been best to make a couple more seasons and then leave it open ended like they did in Objects in Space. The episode was brilliant, and I liked how it left you watching them sail off into space, into the unknown of the future happily ever after. :)

I think too much happened in Serenity's two hour length, and it should have been spread out like Star Wars or Lord of the Rings where we actually see the character evolve more into their final roles on Serenity. It left me confused in the end because I was used to FF's beating all odds with everyone okay and well-defined character themes and there was so much to take in that the first couple times I watched it in the theater and on DVD I just gave up and stared at Inara running around in her tank top for the later part of the film. :)

Yes, well, given how poorly the film did at the box office, all this strategy would have meant is we would have gotten one-third of a story and little chance of ever seeing the rest.

I seem to remember hearing that Alan all but begged NOT to have Wash killed.

One lesson I've learned about series TV , serials, movies, etc., is: Never kill off one of the regulars without a behind the screen political reason.

I want BOTH Wash and Book back, dammit...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Neither Wash or Book died in Joss' original script for Serenity. Later he realized that genuine tension was needed to make the stakes higher for the crew. I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky we lost only two of our BDHs.

True, but maybe if they did it this way there would have been more suspense and people would have wanted to watch the sequels to find out what happens. My other favorite movie the Chronicles of Riddick had the same problem, and it was actually written as a trilogy with three separate scripts similar to LOTR, according to Vin Diesel. First there was Pitch Black, basically the Hobbit that introduced Riddick as a character. Then there was TCOR, but I think too much happened in that one film alone, and not enough of the theology or mythology was developed, leaving very little to make a sequel about.

Well, for one thing if there was to be a sequel, both actors would be back (as has been said numerous times) and Joss had told Jewel the basis of the sequel which indicates exactly how we'd see them again.

I'm in the camp that doesn't want Wash or Book resurrected. I just can't see it working, not even if Joss wrote and directed it. The Firefly 'Verse is very different to the Buffy/Angel 'Verse. There it was much easier to bring characters back.

That being said, I was dead against Colossus returning from the dead in 'X-Men' and OH MY GODS Joss wrote the BEST character resurrection EVER! EVER EVER EVER! Even better than ANYONE coming back in Buffy or Angel - Darla included!

That's the thing that gets me, although if they did come back it would likely be in flashbacks as others have noted. I thought about it some more and I think now that it is unlikely they will come back alive or otherwise they wouldn't have been killed in such a dramatic manner.
