SHANNARA

took me forever to figure out how to post a new thread. embarassing really. seriously, i mean months :P

1. wonderfalls!!! omg. it is sooooo freaking good, what were those dumb f*x thinking? it is absolutely stunning that they would cancel such a show with all the crap being shovelled out there. true, it's been years since the axe fell, but i'm a tad slow. it rocks! poor tim minear eh? sigh...

2. i loved the movie. i really did. better than i expected. with a couple of major exceptions. not the one you'd think either. sure, my favourite character's chances of making the next film have been greatly reduced. at the time it was an emotional blow like i've never experienced. and in a movie theatre. out in public. emotions exposed to the world. thankfully the lights were out at the time. but he had no story. no history. nothing to be explained. and book did. and in the long run, and in retrospect, that loss hurts more. and it hurts a lot.

3. now i get ugly. did i mention i loved the movie? but some of the acting stunk. especially early. the first lines of several characters were horrible. awful. unnatural. and worst of all was kaylee. and while others warmed up quickly and were back in character.... she never really did....

4. what's with inara and incense? :P

anyway, it's been grand posting a new thread for the first time. see you all at serenity II - attack of the borg clones, and don't forget - if there isn't a Canadian in your cast, you will never, ever succeed. :D

5. i offically invite tangential postings in my thread :P keep the signal alive!!

Hello Shannara:

I am hyperventalateing from reading your post. You really are excited. But who can blame you.
You see; we got a movie and that means we have been heard. So cross fingers and keep hope alive for more.

So this is you first thread. Well I hope there are more. And don't be embarassed. We all have to learn these things. I belong to a couple of sites and each is different. So you have to experiment. But do not be afraid to ask. Actually I am still learning myself. There are people here with a lot of knowledge and will help you if you need it. That is how I have learned to use this site.

And again congratulations on your first thread.

Okay, Shannara, somebody's got to do it... take on your point 3, that is.

I didn't notice that anybody's acting stunk in Serenity. The worst I noticed was a few poorly enunciated lines that made their meaning unclear. For example, in a certain scene between Mal and Book, the cap'n says "Shouldn't've been you. They should've come after me." But he slurs the first word a bit, so it sounds like "Should've been you." I chalk this up to the film's relatively tight budget -- they couldn't do a zillion retakes on every scene.

Anyhow, when you say that people's first lines sounded unnatural and use that to suggest that it took time for the actors to get back in character, you're forgetting one important thing about movies: they are not filmed in the sequence you see on the screen. The first line a particular character says may have been shot on the last day of filming.

I propose an alternate theory: it was you, not the actors, who was out of sync. If you saw Serenity after you were very familiar with the series, and had watched every episode many times, then the lines were all familiar. But when you walked into the theater for the BDM, every single line was brand new, and you hadn't heard any new lines from the characters for quite a long time. No wonder they sounded a bit "off".

Anyway, welcome -- glad you figured out the big secret of posting on FFF.net!

SIRI

Hey Shannara,
Good post as it's good to know that while we are all fans and supporters we can voice negative opinions and not get tarred and feathered.

I beg to disagree with you on the acting and reality of the characters. I saw Serenity before I ever heard about Firefly. At the time it didn't impact me as much as later on - after buying the DVD, getting to know the characters (and loving them) and then watching the movie. That being said, when I watched Serenity again, I liked it even better.

I would agree that the bonds between the characters and the subtle relationships aren't as well developed in the movie. But as others have commented, they didn't have a huge budget and had to make choices as to where and how to focus. Overall, I thought Serenity turned out pretty dammed good and I like it better every time I watch it.

BTW - I bought an extra copy that I've been sharing with my martial arts class - building up the fan base - late start better than no start, eh?

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Gorramit! You wanna shoot my blood pressure up so high this early in the day! I would do almost anything for a Wonderfalls movie, almost as much as I would for a Serenity sequel or new Firefly series.

I love the BDM more each time I watch it, same for the series, and they never get old. However, I was also devastated the first time I saw Serenity (5/5/05 pre-screening) it threw me for so many loops that for about a week afterwards I wasn't even sure I liked it. But such is the power of Joss' vision that I knew I had to give it another chance. Caught another pre-screening June 23, then saw it again three times opening weekend, eight times total in the theater, probably six times so far on dvd.

I have only one other comment concerning your post.

#4. That isn't incense.

I agree i was hoping wonderfalls movie.

And yes some of kaylees early lines suck, when she says "Everythings shiney captin not to fret" its just like someone was like "and go!" which i understand they were cause of the whole one long take thing. And the other one is when the the reavers are coming and she just gasps it hurts me every time.

other then that the movie is great!

I loved Wonder Falls and one of the things I'd most hope to say on opening weekend for Serenity was to reckon that we'd get a Wonder Falls movie from its success too.

*sigh*

Anyway, I'm now of the opinion that the opening long shot was a mistake - I think it was aiming for cinematic but unfortunately it rather derailed the movie for too long. Better to have started off with our guys in some serious action.

well i had only watched about half the wonderfalls episodes when i posted this thread and now having watched them all, i can tell you the best episodes were yet to come. it's immediate top 10 all time and maybe top 5. had no idea jewel staite was going to be in it either. quel surprise i can tell ya.

so... the movie. i've seen it 5 times and the opening lines in the movie (why do i care in what order they were filmed?) for jayne to an extent, but particularly zoe and especially kaylee make me cringe every single time i see it. it's bloody painful. and kaylee just keeps em coming. other than a line or two about nether regions and sex, it just wasn't a good character in the film. which is odd, cause she was by far my favourite character in the show.

go ahead and try and blame the shan-man, but i watch the film with others and i gotta tell ya. it ain't just me.

and if you haven't seen wonderfalls, you have a real treat awaiting you.

Another short-lived ('cause it was on Fox and it was good) TV series by Tim Minear.

It's about this snarky, sarcastic girl who starts hearing inanimate objects talking to her, telling her to do things. Really fun and witty.
