Yep - You go to regular med school but you get what is called a D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) rather than a M.D.

Lots of DO's in this area. They focus on keeping you well and trying "alternative things" rather than surgery/pharmaceuticals being the first (and only) choices for a MD.

whoa CK is still around? Haven't seen you post in ages.

So, I sorta disagree with this part a bit. My first two years of college is when I made all my good friends there. After that school work and finding a job took up so much time I wouldn't have been able to focus on meeting people at all. Granted you could just make all your friends at the scholarship college and then just be a loner at the transfer college.

First: What? What did I say to annoy Hell's Kitten now? I thought she put implants in animals and stuff like that, not draining blood out of sick people and emptying bedpans that kind of thing...
Second: It is defintely not the same here from what I've seen. Alternatives are embraced in Europe to a FAR greater extent than here.
The D.O. thing sounds interesting, though. Perhaps that would feel less... restricted to me. Dug makes an excellent point about taking artistic pursuits and turning them into money. That's the issue I've had with becoming a graphic designer (that combined with how competitive it is...)

Okay, NOW my head feels ready to explode!

Mav- Ok thank you that was driving me nuts!! Yes DO is what my brother in law is going to be. There's a great medical school in Kirksville Missouri that specializes in it. He's going to be fantastic at it too. He really liked the idea of trying to keep people well instead of focusing on treating them once they got sick.

Hell's Kitten I am now truly confused and picturing a guinea pig with breast implants. Now I am wondering why in the world you'd need to sex up guinea pigs

I must have missed RugBug's post. Just curious why our resident equestrian showed an interest...?

Now, now. Let's not get all "RugBug really enjoys those animals, if you know what I mean" on me here. If you read the previous post, I had some personal knowledge b/c of a guy on another board. He owned a few stallions and "enjoyed" them quite a bit. Even posting photographic evidence (on a complete different board...one dedicated to beastiality...who knew THAT existed on the internet). Really nasty stuff...(I also stated that I didn't look at the pictures because you just can't wipe those images out of your head and I didn't want to live with them.) The wierdest part is my interaction with this guy started over a discussion of human/equine emotional cognizance. His theory was the horses and animals are basically the same. I disagreed. A year or two later, when his beastiality came to light, his messages made so much more sense...in a very disturbing way. His whole philosophy and probably why he was okay with molesting his animals was because we were all the same. The whole thing was just an icky experience. The guy is now in jail...for trafficking cocaine. He got busted smuggling 372 pounds of coke from Canada to Washington.

And enough of that ickiness...

MSG: Contrary to what experience might dictate for me, I do believe teaching can be a great profession, you just really have to want to be a teacher. I didn't like it, but if I had, I think it would've been great. Some people are under the false impression that teaching is easy and are in it for the vacations. Well, you pay for those vacations in the first few years...and every time you have to switch a grade and redo ALL your lesson plans, etc.

I taught 6th grade, so the kids were definitely old enough to have some fun with. Actually, they were quite fun, at times. 6th graders are just learning how to express themselves and their opinions. Helping them think critically about their world and their opinions was one of the most enjoyable times I had while teaching.

I didn't think it was possible to say or do anything to set HK off. Or you, for that matter...

Having had a bad DO experience makes me a little gunshy of them. But as I've pointed out myself there are quacks in every field. And the there are surely good ones as well. It's just in my experience I haven't found one. Of course, I'm not likely to since I stopped looking

I was too slow to be marketable as a commercial artist even though I studied for it for a semester my senior year in high school. But show me an ad and I can tell you exactly what's wrong with it. Is there a market for people who piss people off? Besides comedy and terrorism?

The most important thing is that POS is behind bars.
I've said it before, I don't care what two consenting adults do to or with each other as long as it doesn't involve children or animals.

Neither can give their consent, and that is key to any sexual act. IMO.

If you read that as annoyance, I apologize for not being more clear. (I don't think it's possible for you to annoy me.)

I was just responding to your statement "After all, it's late in the day for me, and I despise the medical establishment for many and varied reasons. (Odds, if you're reading this, I know you do the nursing thing, but come on, you hate it )", and probably should have put one of those cute little smiley things after it.

*hee hee hee snort!*
No, no.
Animal studies are part of the requirements for the devices we develop. (You know. Instead of putting something untested and unproven into some poor, fragile human being.) Guinea pigs are too small for implants; we generally use other animals.... We even saved a race horse! But that's another story and I'm not sure if patient confidentiality would be in play... *snikker*

At any rate, as part of the "medical establishment," I imagine I have a little different perspective and understanding of the practice, regulations, and industry as a whole. I confess to getting somewhat weary of the misconceptions that are bandied about and thrown back in various ways as accusations. I won't ramble on, as I don't know the specificities that evoke such disdain, but I would be happy to address any points or questions as best I can.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

My only distain is that much of the medical establishment seems to be about the highest bidder. Drugs before herbs and changes in diet (and in fact rarely taking diet into account) and as many of them as possible. It bothers me. Diet is very closely linked to health, but only people with possible heart disease are told to change theirs at all (despite the fact that sugar makes blood thicker and feeds cancer cells) and it bothers me.
As for being disgusted by the idea of working as a doctor or nurse... I don't wanna wipe anyone's ass but my own, and I think that dealing with sick people all day would wear on me. The D.O. thing sounded better because it focuses on actual health care rather than caring for the sick which I see as very different, and also sounds like it takes more things into account and offers more alternatives. Everyone is different, and finding the right treatment is more important than seeing how many expensive drugs it takes to 'fix' someone (a.k.a. eliminate their symptoms but not the underlying cause; another issue I have with it)
*gets off the soapbox*
This all comes from my own personal experience with doctors, which has been limited to my grandpa dying of cancer they didn't find until he was more than half dead and Ex#3 (formerly ex of doom) being in the hospital for a blood clot and being prescribed rat poison to take care of it, rather than a diet and exercise plan (which should have worked for a man his age). Also the conversations I have overheard/messages I have taken working for an answering service (we have a lot of doctor's offices). I have personally gotten better results with diet (which I need to work on) exercise (which I need to get back to) herbs (which have made me feel worlds better in just a couple weeks) and homeopathics (which lifted me out of depression, allowed me to heal from dental surgery twice as fast as average according to the doctor, as well as taking care of a lot of the pain from said surgery, and have basically improved my life with very little effort on my part except giving up coffee and peppermint. Only have to take the remedies themselves every once in awhile)
Okay, sorry.
*steps off soapbox again*

Don't stomp off, NV. Just next time always highlight and copy posts that are more than 3 sentences long. That's saved my oh-so-important ramblngs on a few occasions.

And on the fluid front...I hear from WSSC (Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, DC's water authority) that my building will have water at around 5 PM. Course, I leave at 4.

NV- HUGS sweety and that's a lovely gun you have there...good name too:)

PR- yeah I think a DO is loads better. I like the idea of someone who focuses on keeping me healthy and cures me when he can't :)

Hell's Kitten - glad to hear there's not much of a market for breast implants for guinea pigs. After Rugbug's horror story I started to wonder. LOL ( well sort of LOL and sort of eeeeeeeew) Glad to hear you saved a horse. I love horses:) Actually I love all animals which is why MisterG forbids( in a joking way) me to watch nature shows. Because then I see animals and want them as pets ( may I say I still think a wallaby would make a nice pet...or maybe a meerkat...or a penguin...or there was this really cute hedgehog)

We had the plumbing go out here at work...for three days. They thought it would be a week or two...so it wasn't as bad as it could've been. I think the worst part of it all was that I was facilities manager at the time. I scrambled and came up with solutions (had Really nice port-a-pots delivered within 2 hours...got bottled water delivered, got paper plates/cups/plastic spoons, knives and forks. Every need was covered, just not in the fashion the employees were used to), but people were still pissed off.

DESKTOPHIPPIE

Hey Deepgirl!

Okay, I'm also a member of the English Lit graduate club. And I completely understand your worry that you won't be qualified for anything in particular when you finish your degree.

My circumstances are a bit different as I live in Ireland, and jobs wise we're doing pretty well. That being said, I was terrified when I left University. It's not like they have ads looking for English Grads in the newspaper!

My first job after leaving Uni was Credit Analysis. I worked for one of the largest banks in the world. I was working with Business graduates, IT graduates, all sorts. I got the job not because I was qualified in a business field, but because I used my interview to explain the skills an English degree gives you. You learn to research. You learn to create reports on complicated material in a very short space of time. You learn to communicate, orally and in writing. You learn to pick out the information you need from a *vast* array of resources. You also tend to pick up word processing skills and typing skills, if for no other reason than you are an English student in despa- despi- desperi- dire need of a spellchecker.

Yes, I went on to do other courses after I finished my degree. At first I did a business and IT diploma just to have something technical on my CV. I did not learn half the skills I learned through my English degree. After that I went from looking for a cosy office job that would pay the bills and then some (which my English degree had no trouble helping me with) to deciding what it was I wanted to do with my life. I do want to write, which right now is still a hobby, but I also wanted to teach adults. So I got a qualification in teaching computers - which took about a year part time - and a certificate in teaching English as a foreign language - which took a couple of weeks part time and is internationally recognised so it's basically a passport to anywhere in the world! The downside of all this is that I'm earning less than I was and will be for at least a bit longer, but the major upside is that I'm working at a job I love. Nothing buys that feeling :)

For *any* job, experience is vital. Internships, volunteer work, even that Saturday job at Four Star Pizza will help you get your foot in the door.

If it's writing and books you adore then there are jobs out there that revolve around them. Have you thought about a career in Abstract Writing? I'm fuzzy on the details, but you'd need a strong track record in writing to land that position. Still, it's an actual writing job that pays pretty well, so it's worth asking about. There's also copy editing, web editing, technical writing ... a whole bunch of jobs that involve writing that none of us ever think of. You may need to learn some new skills (like HTML or Web design software for web editing) but there are loads of classes available and most of the time you won't need a qualification in that area, just proof you know what you're doing!

Boy, I'm really taking over the thread here... anyway, I just wanted to speak up in favour of English Lit. I did adore studying it and I'd go back and do my Masters tomorrow if I could! And while you won't be guaranteed a career in something in particular, you'll still pick up an amazing amount of skills.

Good luck!

hey giggling is fun:) I know that I shall never qualify for adult status since I play juvenile practical jokes, watch cartoons, and can spend several hours discussing the relative merits of Spiderman and Batman and who would win in a fight ( I still stand by Batman because of his superior planning skills)

And now I have to go...it's late night tutoring for me

(To PhoenixRose) I understand.
I had a response written...
...but then I felt stupid so I decided to drop it.

Something's just not right today.

I have a question! I doubt it's an imponderable, though:

Someone recently said to a bunch of us "You good folks are the salt of the earth!" and it was said in a positive, complimentary manner.

Now, I've always understood that to "salt the earth" meant to make it unable to yield crops... a "scorched earth" tactic that basically ruins the land.

SO... how'n th'hell does "you're the salt of the earth" become a compliment? What's it mean??

For those of you just joining us, or actually reading one of my posts for the first time, I have an odd fascination with language, which leads me to think about things like this.

It's biblical in it's origin and has to do with the nescessity of salt for flocks to lick - salt licks are still used today - and how without salt your flock may not do too well in the harsh Middle Eastern climate... blah blah blah ... Jesus mentioned it in the sermon on the mount... sorry - I am not feeling terribly thological today...

Wanna have some ice-cream?

EDIT! I am never going to get through this thread in the time I have!! Hello everyone!!

Hello and hugs to my Li'l sis! I saw your email and I am about to read it now! Mwaaah - love you lots!!

Hello Hell's Kitten - I do hope we're back on to party hard in D*C?

Hi JQ (pretzels he he he...)!! Hello Rugbug! How are you sweetie?? I am thinking of taking swing lessons before I go to D*C - just so I can keep up with you & RIMG!! Hi Stinking Rose, Hi Zeek...

(AH.. yeah - at this point I re-resolve to read the whole thread before replying since Rugbug covered all the sermon on the mount and all that already... sorry...)

Hello Penguin dear!! I see you are far more eloquent than I am too - As a former Theatre major you might like to know that I sang those 'Light of the World' song in 'Godspell' when I was 20!! A terrific show - I loved it!!

Hey Whitefall - can't help - sorry - I am not in the US so can't comment on the pros and cons of schools, colleges and university!

Hi Dug!! Hope your wife is happier by the time you read this! Oh - Deepgirl!! I love that episode of Angel - Ha! I was talking about that last night with Shiny Kitten and Bernard Browncoat!! We had a blast in this bar in the middle of Melbourne!!

Traveler!!! Hello sweet thing!! I have missed you while in my 'parental induced exile'...

Hi Asorta! CK!! I haven't seen you for ages!!! It is so good to catch up - albeit briefly!

Odds! How are you my Jailbait?

Hi Yin Yang!! Mei Mei!!!! How are you wonderful Rose - you were toasted last night!! Well... you were mentioned - and it was all good sweet thing! ...ummmm... you realise that I am going to have to read the previous thread now - truth monger?

Hang on...YOU CAN'T PRACTICE AS A NATUROPAH IN SOME STATES OF THE USA???? I thought you were supposed to be an enlightened country??

Mavourneen!! Hello honey!! NVG!! Huge Hugs to you sweetie!!

Oh... and guess who is composing in word as we speak? I have had one too many long posts eaten by the FFF.net fiend!

*huggle pounces DeskTopHippie!* Hello my sweet Irish Colleen!!*

Hi Sahara!! How are you? Hello gorgeous Hobbleit! Rhyianan... there's a Toys'R'Us jingle?

OK - I love you all and miss you all and will try to pop in again before I am banished once more! 14 more sleeps til I have unhindered access to the internet once more!!

mmm ice cream sandwiches. NO!!

CHIPWICHES!!!

We just finished a nice hot gooey peachy oaty cobbler kind of thing that the kidlet made.

Magda love, I was in Godspell too! Twice!
College productions. First time I did the Sonia part "Turn Back O Man", then the Herb part "All For The Best" (the patter part).

If I had only seen some honest burlesque bump-n-grind my performance would have been much better. I did leave red lipstick on bald heads at every opportunity.

There's a million toys at Toys 'R Us that I can play with!
From bikes, to trains, to video games, it's the biggest toy store there is...Gee Whiz!
I don't want to grow up, because then if I did,
I wouldn't be a Toys 'R Us kid!"

glad I could help!

my other favorite is of course Pippin. Gotta find my corner of the sky and all.

Shall crime bring crime forever,
Strength aiding still the strong?
Is it thy will, o Father,
That men shall toil for wrong?
"No", say thy mountains;
"No", say thy skies;
Man's clouded sun shall brightly rise,
And songs be heard instead of sighs.
God save the people.

I will now have all this stuff in my head for the rest of the dang week!
