LYSANDER

It has been some time since I've posted on this sight. I keep looking, but that's it. I had the sudden urge to write, but nobody to listen. I was one of those people that caught Firefly later than most of you, but it has really had an influence in my life.
I was never really an emotional person until about five years ago. My wife was very ill and almost died right in front of me. It was a huge wake up call. I use to take things and people for granted. Then my father died of cancer two and a half years ago. It unfortunately took these two events to make me become an emotional person.
I first saw Firefly last year during spring break. I instantly was into the show. After going through these two events, I could really connect with Mal. I had felt like I lost everything that meant something to me like he did in the war.
I've found that I'm living my life much like him. I don't have a crew, but the people that are close to me, I would do anything to protect them. They have become my crew. And I think that each of them has something in them that I have lost. I think that is the main reason why I've made such a connection to the show and the characters.
I know this probably is a bunch of rambling to a lot of you, but it's just me needing to say something. I know some of you will understand because you feel the same way. You also know because everybody feels for the captain.
So, I guess that's about it. Thank you to all of those that read and I hope you were not to unhappy in wasting your time reading.

Simon: What if he(Mal) tells you to kill me?
Zoe: (without hesitation) I kill you.

Lysander; I just wanted to acknowledge your message and thoughts. Much of what you wrote hits home. I am sorry for your losses and feel the way you do that something about Firefly makes "family/crew" of all of us. Thanks for taking the time to share.

Interesting reversal.

Mal hangs on to his crew like they were his family.

You hang on to your family like they were your crew.

I'm glad you've found something in Firefly/Serenity that you can hang on to as well.

Its good to hear from ya Lysander, been a while. I think most of us shadow your very same feelings. We come from different places with different beliefs and still we hold on as long as it takes. How are things now? Its enough just to barely hold on. I hope things are better than just barely holding on.

LYSANDER, We are all family here. I know we may not be your #1 family but we are your browncoat family and that is a good thing.

I, like you have lost loved ones in the last several years. I think many of us here have. That doesn't lessen your loss I know. It is still painful. All I want to say is that I (we) understand.

Yes Firefly has a high degree of emotions in the show. I totally agree with you. It's also what makes it so damn good. Summer almost brings me to tears every time she says how she feels unwanted and doesn't belong. I want to almost tell her she can come stay with me and my family, carzyness and all but I'm sure my wife and kids would have something to say about that.

"Dad why is that strang girl talking to the cows in the field behind our house?"

Anyhoo, we're there for you fellow browncoat.

My sympathies to you my friend. I'm currently having some truly sucky things happening in my life and I gotta say the folks here have helped me by just listening to me rant and such, and actually, I can tell folks here stuff that I'm somewhat hesitant to tell my IRL family. Family cares about you no matter what, and that's how people here treat each other. We're crew and we're family.

I hope things have gotten better for you (and your wife.) More *hugs* for you.

Lysander,
You were one of the first that struck up a conversation off the boards with me, and I thank you for that. We had a chance to share our loves and chat about random things. I lost track of you, got back in touch, and lost track again.
Everyone here has said basically what is in my own head and heart when I read this. We are all family, and are all here for each other.
No time wasted, no rambling, not unhappy...and I do understand where you are coming from.
Welcome back, and I hope to talk to you again.

No time wasted at all. My mom passed in Nov/05. I know how that feels. I hope that writing what you did has helped you in some way. Looking foward to reading more posts from you in the future. Many blessings to you.

I just wanted to say thank you to all of you. To be able to read the replies that you guys posted makes me really feel like part of the browncoat family. Right now, things are going okay. Unfortunately, because of the illness, my wife and I can not have kids. It is something we have talked about and we are both okay. But, I found out today that I have a big enough family with all of you browncoats. Just don't expect presents at Christmas.

Again, thank you for listening and responding. It helps lift the weight, even for a few minutes.

BROWNCOAT1

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Lysander it is good to see you posting with us and sharing your story with us. I know it is not easy to get onto an online community and confide personal feelings to a group of people you don't know for the most part beyond posts they make here. You're in the company of browncoats my friend and you're most welcome.

I can understand your empathy with Mal. I myself empathize with him for some of the same reasons as you. I served in the military for years. I joined because I had a feeling of patriotism and as an 18 year old kid I allowed a recruiter to paint a picture of exotic countries, glory and honor. I saw a lot of things in my time in service including conflict in Desert Shield and Desert Storm as well as other things. I lost friends and I lost touch with people I had known. Coming home I felt out of touch with the life I had known and like Mal I had to put my life together and move on. I have loss and I have had tragedy, but I'm still here.

When you think about it, that is not really all that different from many people. Many of us go through personal loss and very rough times. We dig deep and find that strength we need to make it, or we have people in our lives we lean on to see us through. Mal has seen a lot sure, but so have some of us. In a way Mal is like some of us as much as we are like him. Mal is that indomitable spirit that will make it through anything. He will not give up. I suppose you could say that he is the embodiment of the human spirit, unconquerable and resolute.

I understand where you are coming from Lysander and I am sure that there are many others here who do as well. You are amongst kindred spirits my friend.

Take care, post here whenever you can, and keep flyin'!

MAGHAFFAR

Be assured, Lysander, that there's over 25,000 Browncoats here to listen. Maybe not all of 'em will, but I'm guessing them that do are a fair measure of the group as a whole. The 'Verse resonates with so many different people on so many different levels, but the mainstay element is always "family". It's what everybody ultimately needs and wants, even if they say they don't. Everybody needs somebody. Just remember, the same glue that got you stuck on FF & the BDHs is the same glue that got everybody else here stuck too, which makes us all stuck together, even if we may have different ways of seeing things. Stay Shiny & Keep Flying!

My husband's been ill during the last three years and I've found the family/support theme in Firely and Serenity is very comforting. The crew don't always get on or even like each other but as Mal says to Saffron 'here I am with a gun to your head. That's 'cause I got people with me, people who trust each other, who do for each other and ain't always looking for the advantage. There's good people in the 'verse. Not many, lord knows, but you only need a few.'

After reading all of the responses from all of you, it is very easy to see how significant the line from "The Message" really is.

When you can't run, you crawl. And when you can't crawl....somebody carries you.

You guys really bring this line to life. Thanks.

My personal connection with the show is the feeling of Family Amongst Friends. I love my family, and I am close with them but I don't have friends. I have people that I love that I have welcomed into my family. My friends aren’t just my boys & chickas they are my brothers, and sisters I love them and treat them like I would my own blood. They are “my crew”. I don't see relationships and characters like that on TV ever. That’s what makes FireFly so Unique and Special to me.

That's why we're here . This is what we do .

"If you can't walk , you crawl . And if you can't crawl , you find someone to carry you..."

Reminds me of that greatest of songs by that greatest of bands , U2's 'One'...

" We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One... "

Or , Dire Straits , " Brothers in Arms " . Same kind of thoughts...

So this is us , on the raggedy edge...

Aimee Mann taught me something..." Count my blessings on my thumbs..."

If you've got as many blessings as you've got thumbs , you're rich...

Then there's this , from an old Inuit song :

" I think over again my small adventures.

My fears.

Those small ones that seemed so big.

For all those vital things I had to get
and to reach.

And yet there is only one great thing.

The only thing.

To live to see the great day that dawns

and the light that fills the world. "

Dear Lysander,

Sounds like times have been tough for you lately. It's good that you talked to us and that you know now that we do care. Feel free to talk anytime. I'm here if you need someone to listen -- lots of us are.

I hope your wife is doing better now. It's tough to get such a scare over someone you love like that. I went through a similar moment with my mom just last year. She's doing fine now, but she is in her eighties so I anticipate more to come (hopefuly not too soon).

It's hard to deal with not having kids if you really want them. I have some friends who have been trying for years with no luck and finally looked into adopting. They'll be getting a little girl from China this summer. I know the restrictiona are getting tighter on that, but maybe it's something to look into -- depending on how you and your wife feel about it, of course.

In the meantime, your fellow Browncoats will carry you for as long as you need us now and anytime thereafter!

If I'm gonna dream, I'm gonna dream big.
