Previous thread.

Just thought I'd head the cooler thread with a Who Cares song that takes place five years and one week ago. It got warm in Cali for a month and suddenly it was brisk and drizzly one morning. But the warmth before the cold sparked some creativity for the next couple of weeks stuck inside.

Good! There was just something slightly askew without VeX around....

Me? My day started off oddly all right - as in "omigod omigod omigod i am soooo awake weeeeehoooo what do i do with all this energy wheeee work work work let's go let's go let's go ZOMG yay i got the right repeated tests results i am a geeeeenius stop looking at me i am immune to caffeine and am not on crack, minion!"

But then it fairly quickly deteriorated. To the point where I wanted to rip the New Guy's throat out for saying something so arrogantly condescending, the implications of which absolutely infuriate me, even though it's been echoed by all New People when they start at my company. One of these days... *growls* Ima get myself fired

HK: Whoa, there. Hallo. Didn't mean to elicit any comments like this... although, considering this thread, I shoulda known better.
We'll just blame it on your extreme ennui altering your perceptions, shall we?

Ennui is my nominal. There was nothing extreme about it at the time of that post, and therefore perceptions were not altered. So, no, we shan't. I juuust forgot that making what seems to me to be a rather innocuous statement about self-modification would cause the way too kind people in this thread to jump in and say something. Which, don't get me wrong, is totally appreciated... just not entirely necessary.

HK: I consider breast implants and other plastic surgery akin to dying or cutting your hair in a certain style, getting piercings or tattoos, wearing certain style shoes or clothing, going to a gym to sculpt your body to a certain shape; I make no distinction, it's all exactly the same to me.

It's an aesthetic, not a self-loathing.

The alterations argument is brief and not at all an opposing point of view, merely a clarifying one, if it is even that.

It wasn't meant as an arguement. It was a statement of fact. You seemed to have missed the point, though, which is the last statement... which I underlined so you can see it better. This was made to head off those "OMG!!1! You must not looooove yourself if you wanna change how you looooooooook!!~" reactions. It was also a response to previous (previous, previous, previous?) comments about people who get plastic surgery must be giving in to "peer pressure" and succumbing to the ideal that "society forces on us." Maybe I misread something long ago. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. You know how I hate to drone on and on in posts...........
Quote:

JoQu: Breast implants, other plastic surgery, dyeing or cutting hair in a certain style, getting piercings or tattoos, wearing certain style shoes or clothing, going to a gym to sculpt your body is a matter of degree perhaps but more than just that. It is a question of "permanent" vs. transient, invasive vs. prosthetic.
In this context, nothing is permanent, it’s all transient. "Degree" is subjective and therefore moot. If permanence and invasiveness (which is also subjective) are unimportant to the one doing these things, these terms are also irrelevant. Boiled down to its simplest form, it's change vs. no change. Black and white. (Reminds me of the saying "There is no such thing as being a little pregnant.")

But if (math geek alert) you need to define your external appearance solely by means of Fibonacci Numbers and the Golden Ratio, then I must beg to differ.
Now you're just being ridiculous for the sake of ... what? … fun exaggeration? ... joy in using big words and concepts? The Golden Ratio has nothing to do with it. The concept of Fibonacci Numbers is exponential and infinite, and has nothing to do with symmetry. Though, it would - and has - made a great tattoo:

Quote:

Of all of the countless hominids with whom {grammar nazification by HK *giggle*} I have become acquainted over the scores of seasons I've watched and learned upon this earth, you have repeatedly demonstrated your individuality, idiosyncrasy, distinction (there are more; Roget says so). Why then opt for symmetry? Synthetic symmetry at that?
Because I can.

As I already said, it's an aesthetic (and its subjectiveness limits my explanation). Your statement and subsequent questions insinuate that striving for a certain aesthetic negates individuality.

Symmetry is balance. Equilibrium. It permeates everything in nature and physics. (A maths / physics nerd should know that. ) Yet, it doesn’t make anything less unique or individualized….
Quote:

Striving for the epitome, rather than exhalting the self?
Epitome? ...of what? ...of the Self?

I cannot "strive" for the epitome of the Self, as I already am the epitome of my Self, by the very definition of the terminology, and cannot by any means be the epitome of anyone else's Self.

Striving for a perfect subjectiveness, perhaps, but not for epitome of the Self. Exaltation is, by its nature in this context, achieved through said striving, it is not diminished by it. Meaning, if I did not "exalt the Self," I would not care enough to strive for something more.
Quote:

Are you Nietschesque?
I'm not sure you have your philosophical catch phrases quite right, though I am no expert in Friederich's varied works, so I'm not sure if these questions were meant in conjunction with one another.

In some ways, yes. But I don't see its relevance here.
Quote:

We already cower before your obvious superiority! Ah yes. It's not for us. I say revell in your asymmetry! Glory in it! It sets you apart, and that where you should be. Where you cannot harm us...
Because I'm in a foul mood from work today, I'm just going to assume that you weren't trying to be a sarcastic dick here.

Again, you missed my point. I am naturally asymmetric. We all are. I don't think nature is capable of perfect symmetry. Nothing I can do about that, really. When talking about getting new tits, I'm talking about proportionality (along with aesthetics). Not symmetry. Huuuuuuuuge difference.

And now I've completely lost track of... well... something... and have rambled far too much. I'm tired of the clackity clacking of my keyboard.

Sorry for the long post.

JAMESTHEDARK

Plastic Surgery: I don't see myself getting any, myself, but that's not to say I don't see its purpose. It can fix something y'all knocked out of whack (car-crashes will do that sort of thing, y'know?), or rectify a problem nature decided to gift you with. And HK was right in saying that symmetry pervades all of nature. There was a study done a while back (80's?) which people rated faces in terms of attractiveness. Almost without exception, the highest scores were granted to those which were closest to perfect symmetry.
There is a prerogative towards it in nature. If you grew up sickly, malnourished, and were beaten by superior specimens regularly in development, you are going to be asymmetric in many areas, showcasing that you are inferior. If you are well fed, have a hearty constitution, and avoid the savage beatings, you'll be all equal and pretty. It's an ingraned perception that reaches back more than a billion years, to the point when multicellular organisms first began to screen for optimum mates.
True, in modern times, this has gone a little askance. Humans, being capable of producing very subtle facial expressions, alter the structure of their face constantly. Happy people develop smile-lines, scowlers get scowl-lines. The muscles under the face do a similar thing with the three-dimensional structure of the face, on a scale which most people don't realize they're percieving. Perfect symmetry of human faces in nature is almost impossible to develop. Cosmetic surgery makes this impossibility somewhat more possible.

Wow, I went on a rant, didn't I?
ANYhooo... Plastic surgery? Go nuts, it's just not my thing.

It was actually the opposite of enlargement that fed the discussion. Reduction for the sake of physical and mental health (on a case by case basis). Strongly encouraged by me because of the serious improvement I've witnessed in others.

Okay, I got a quarter of the way through this thread, but at this rate I'll have to leave again before I get a chance to finish it!

So I'm giving up on catching up and giving everyone a friendly wave instead

MAVOURNEEN

Morning, everyone.

Well, I'm kind of sad this morning. Last night after work I had an appointment to get my hair cut. I was planning on cutting off maybe 4-5", lighten it up a bit. The ends were a bit ragged.

My hairdresser had other ideas.

As we were chatting, I realized she was cutting much, much more than I had planned on. She had cut off a little more than 6". She said she misunderstood, that she thought I had wanted it back to just below my shoulders.

*sigh*

Not angry, just a little sad. She f'ed up, but it will grow. My head feels like a balloon on a string; the weight of my hair is lifted considerably. Husband said he liked it.

To keep my mind off of it, I'm been over at serenitymovie posting naughty pics of the men of BSG.

awwwwww, Mavs *hugs* I am sure you still look stunning, though I know how it sucks when things like that aren't what you wanted (or paid for).

* gets Mavs a huge mug of The Good Stuff from the pub, with a little fire in it for good measure *

Really Mavs, all things considered, I don't think going from this

to this

seems like a thing to be sad about. (If you won't post pix of yourself, you leave me no choice but to post pix of what you look like in my head. Give or take...)
