I believe BSG is becoming on par with Firefly.

The same things that draws us to the BDS/BDM can also be found in BSG. Gritty realism, people truly being people (getting drunk, being angry, making poor decisions due to emotions).

There are many, many folks (myself included) who are devoted BSG fans AND Browncoats.

Your link surprises me, as most Gaters would say they are Browncoats first...

I must investigate...

I like BSG, but its not anywhere on par with the calibur of writing and acting found in Firefly.

I would take FF over BSG any day, BSG is a great show, but Firefly Is the champ hands down. To me Firefly has personality and BSG doesnt

BSG is a good series, I recommend it to everyone who likes sci-fi.
But not Firefly good.
So Browncoats fall in, and start shooting.

ITA with the above.. I love BSG too. It is interesting, well written and well acted.. but you wouldn't want to live there.. and it does not hold up as well on repeat viewings.. I think the reason is the lack of humor. Now, BSG is another type of show; and humor would not necessarily fit there. but I think the humor (which is so human!) is part of what gives FF the edge..

I would live on Serenity or at Haven or anywhere with this crew... I would not want to live in the BSG world.. it is so grim.

But I do watch it, and I do love the show.. and Callis (Baltar) is a most delicious and complex bad guy.. really love that character/actor

BSG is one of my all-time favorite shows, however, I love firefly just a little bit more. They are both such amazing shows.

arent we getting into dangerous "serenity better than star wars territory" again hehehe

BSG is a very very goodshow and good soul food, but it never quite touches the same level that firefly can reach with one line of dialogue. firefly never relies on cheap editorial tricks like cliffhangers or twists (though it has a few)to keep you glued, it does it thru pure characterisation. people would quite happily watch the firefly castjust sitting round that old oak table talking about nuthin.

i am grateful we have both.

BSG really lacks in the small moments. I like clunky, but I find some of the smaller stuff too jarring even for me.

It does great big scenes, but on the smaller stuff it pretty much sucks. This is where Firefly shines.

Other thing is in the 40 odd thousand survivors, not a one has offbeat humour. I am sure three years is enough to shine. (they tried it a little with the paper/famine scene, but a lot more was needed).

It WAS my fave show until I came across Firefly last year.

Now it is hovering in the number three spot for me far behind Firefly and House MD (which is a very close second).

Saying that, when it comes to the big scenes (well honestly, anything involving Admiral Adama), it is simply awesome.

IMO one of the best shows on TV atm.

BSG is an excellent show. Very entertaining, very well written, very well acted and also truly original - which is a pretty big achievement considering it's a spinoff of a 70's show!

That being said, I love Firefly more. Although BSG has the big battle scenes and the mythology and the carefully crafted stories, it's missing the humour, the snappy dialogue and that indefinable ~something~ that makes you fall in love with the characters. I don't know what it is, because the characters in BSG are really, really amazing. But somehow Firefly has it more.

Speaking of making mistakes due to emotions - SPOILERS FOR 'MAELSTROM' UK/IRISH VIEWERS DON'T READ THIS UNLESS YOU'RE SPOILED

Select to view spoiler:

In the final scene, the grieving Adama places the statue Starbuck gave him on the prow of his model ship, and sees that it fits perfectly. Then he crushes the ship in a fit of rage. That wasn't in the script. The actor ad libbed because he felt it fit the scene. Which it did - it was a real punch in the gut moment - but unfortunately, he didn't know that the ship was actually a very expensive antique on loan to the props department. Oops!

So BSG is good, Firefly is clearly better, so here is where i'm fuzzy, why is Firefly trailing, is it monkeys, some terrifying space monkeys?
We have to get our pee-goos in gear, and start voting.

Not to prove Firefly is better, that is evident.
To get as much attention as possible.
So we can get the gorram boat in the sky again.

The new BSG had so much great potential to be one of the best scifi shows, it had fine actors, a good script and season 1 had some very good episodes but like many good shows it soon went way south.

BSG de-evolved into a crap, depressing show, depended on stunts like suicide bombers and rapists and lame soap opera plots to keep itself on the air, it now has one of the worst ratings ever in the history of television.

I don't hate the show, I really like the Universal folk that help bring us Serenity's Big Damn Movie but as much as I want to like Universal's BSG, I just can't enjoy the show anymore.

The Bob Dylan season finale had to be one of the dumbest cliffhangers/season-ending of all time.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

I watch and like BSG, but it is no Firefly. BSG has had some writing that has seen characters on the show do things that made no sense or seemed completely out character for their personality or for where they were emotionally or relationship wise at the time they did it. There is also the fact that this third season was weaker than the first two and didn't really advance the storyline much at all until the last two or three episodes of the season.

All I have to do is show somebody any 5-minute scene from Firefly, and they'll invariably grab pen & paper to write the title down.
Said one, "This is really wonderful. There's a realism here that I've never seen before."
Said another, "The most beautiful Sci-Fi I've ever seen. Wait, not just Sci-Fi! This beats most dramas I've seen!"
Said all, "Why have I never heard about this until now?" (Why, indeed!)

BSG doesn't pass my "5-minute" test.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

If BSG had been able to continue in the tradition of the mini and Season One it would be getting very close to my #2 all-time favorite SF program, Babylon 5. However, it has squandered most of its potential, but I'm hoping they get back on track for Season Four.

I like well-written, character-based shows, so lately I have been high on Lost, Veronica Mars and Heroes, and in the past few years I have cherished Wonderfalls, Joan of Arcadia, Dead Like Me, etc, but Firefly is still #1 in my estimation (and I mean all shows, not just SF), and I think it's going to be a long time before I fall so deeply in love with another series.

It is very good point about not wanting to live in BSG 'verse.
I'm telling everyone, that I want spaceship class Firefly at my birthday. Most look at me like I'm an idiot.

BSG clearly lacks humour, cheerfulness and optimism, then again, those things maybe hard to come by, when your race is on verge of exstinction (hmm im not a native english person) and on the run.
It is possible to include some humourous characters anyway.
Like the Merry and Pippin.
Tasslehoff Burrfoot.
Han Solo.
and of course Wamba.

Funny thing actually, in Firefly everybody is humourous, even Simon, his comments on Jayne gets me everytime. To Jayne! The box dropping, man-ape-gone-wrong-thing.
All character's in all the Whedon 'verses has their moments. Guess that is why I love them all.
*shniff*, hrm, hrgg, im not crying, im a manly man.

Kind-of a silly question to ask on a Firefly fan-site if you want an objective answer. Ask the same question on a BSG board, and I'm sure the answers would be equally lop-sided.

And for those talking about the plunge in ratings, keep in mind that it's been confirmed that a large percentage of viewers are now downloading the episodes via X-Box Live and iTunes, neither of which are reflected in the ratings. That, and the DVD sales are still really, really good (indicating a lot of fans just wait for the DVD).

If the viewership was as small as the posted ratings suggest, SciFi wouldn't have doubled their initial episode order for next year, and commissioned a TV movie to boot.

People are watching, just not playing the traditional ratings game.

It's hard to answer that question accurately, because those two shows, while sharing some visual aesthetics, are different in their ideology. FF/BDM is a purely character driven sci-fi story. It's more concerned with these nine people on a ship, rather than exploring a brand new world or unraveling the mysteries of the universe. There's no real overreaching arch that would have run through the series, like with BSG or ST: VOY which was all about getting home.

While BSG is character driven to some degree, the main point of the show is to explore the social dynamics of a society on the run, get to Earth and unravel the mysteries of the universe and be all allegorical and reflective of a post 9/11 world. And while it succeeds, to me there's no real sense of adventure. And by adventure, I mean that there's a sense of fun in the action sequences. It's all "do or die".

I think the one sci-fi show that would give FIREFLY a run for it's money is the new DOCTOR WHO. It's purely character driven, every week you 're in a new time or world or both, there are some great emotional moments and theorizing over the mysteries of the universe (I always think of "Father's Day" as one of the best episodes of the series) and it's incredibly funny. But the main reason I love it is because it answers a simple question. When you're watching it, do you think to yourself "Do I want to visit this world?" If you were sucked into the tv show like Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon in PLEASANTVILLE, would it be a world you'd want to visit for real. And my answer is yes. I would rather bum around in the TARDIS or on Serenity than be on the Galactica. I'd rather my killers be Reavers or Daleks than Cylons. At least with the two former they'd actually kill you. The latter would just bore you with them asking 20 questions on what make a human a human. And I'd rather have Mal Reynolds or The Doctor save my ass instead of Adama or Lee or Starbuck.

Is BSG better than FF/BDM? Bite your tongue, Phillistine!
Seriously, I watch BSG from time to time. I liked the mini-series better, frankly. It's a great show, don't get me wrong. But, I think that it tries to rap it's ending up all happy-like a lot. Joss got that right-happy endings don't happen in real life. BSG tries, granted, but it tries a bit too hard, in my opinion. It shows, and gets in the way of enjoyment. Still, it is on par with SG-1, easily, and still a pretty damned good show.

Having fun yet?

Firefly is kingdaddy of scifi shows. Its BDHs that other show is modern day losers or english people who don't like showers. Cylons kicked their ass because you have cowards on the Galatica. Pegasuas had a better crew. They went after the robots not run away.

Nope, BSG is not better than Firefly.

I don't LOVE BSG, but I do LOVE Firefly.

BSG is dark and gritty and I do think it's awesome television. But I don't want to go there, I'm afraid it's too humorless for me.

I would take passage on Serenity with Mal and the crew in a heartbeat. Never look back.

I can't say that about any other show I've ever watched. I'm a big ole SciFi fan too. Been watching SciFi for many years now.

None compares to Firefly.
