Man! Are you people on speed? That's some fast posting.

Mav and MSG: Finished Storm Front last night. I give it four stars out of five. There were some pacing issues and some things that better editing would have improved. I'll likely continue to the next book.

I also got about a third done with John Scalzi's "Old Man's War". I really like what I've read so far.

Mav - stop smoking. We are here to support you.

Flyvote, see my pained cries over in the bar. I did quit. It was time. Life sucks.

(Not me, but this is how I feel)

Oh well. Moving on.

Glad you liked Storm Front, and glad you will read his others. Books 2-5 are excellent. Well written and Dresden is a great character.

I went to Borders last night and bought my son the Captain Underpants series of books. He was thrilled.

I looked for McDevitt, but they only had one book, and it didn't capture my attention away from what I'm reading now...so I think I'll run over to the used bookstore next week and look for his others.

I tend to get obsessed. I'll probably pick up a few Dresden books on my next B&N trip.

I know that tends to happen with a series of books. Happened with the Anita Blake ones.

Books 1 & 2 - interesting but iffy
Books 3- 9 - The best in the series, although some dislike a few of the books (usually depending on who their favourite character is)
Anything after book 9 - Lost the plot. Literally. Just porn.

Pretty annoying since I happen to think books 3 to 9 were pretty well written.

I said that because I truly devoured the first books in the Dresden Files series, running through them in rapid order.

I can't say that the last two I've read. And I have one to go that just came out in cloth. Don't get me wrong, they are good. Very good. I'm just not devouring them.

And Lauryl K Hamilton should stop writing, as her "highly erotic fantasy" series has devolved into out and out p0rn. No plot, no intrigue. Just p0rn. (And I would argue that it became worthless around book 5 or so...but that's just me.)

It is a fine line between genius and madness or something like that.

Currently working my way through The Interpretation of Murder as someone at work lent me it and finding it's first/third person narative switches incredibly frustrating and the author's need to demonstrate his research rather than use it to inform his book as positively infuriating but must finish otherwise I'll end up with a dozen books on the go.

If anyone like sci fi, take a look at Iain M Banks' the Algerbraist, which I am going to re-read next, I love his sci fi writing (I like his fiction too but that seems to be declining in standard where as his sci fi is still amazing), an excellent read if you like large scale space opera without it being overly genre heavy.

I quite liked books six, seven and eight. Yes, she really upped the naughty content, but the stories were enjoyable (if so full of holes they were practically netting) and I was always more interested in the lycanthrope world than I was in the vampires, so I enjoyed reading about the different groups and how they interacted.

Book 9 was a great insight into Edward's word, and it was good to leave the Richard/Jean-Claude stuff behind.

Now? The books are silly, the plots non-existant and I'm really upset at how Richard gets more and more miserable with each book since I really liked that character when he started out and have always had a soft spot for him. I think it's been obvious for a couple of books now that he and Anita will never have a happy relationship together. So for the love of heaven, give him a new love interest and a happy ending and let it be! Do they have to do the she-sleeps-with-him-then-they-fight thing in *every* *single* *book*?

At least the Sookie Stackhouse books tend to be light and fun. There's a lot less torture too.

Don't know about you, but my reading time is very precious...and I'm not going to waste it on the silliness that she has become. I truly loved the first 3 books. I read the next 5, and was more disgusted with each book.
I like Richard, too. I think LKH missed the boat when she wrote him into a corner like that.

*wonders if LKH finally wrote Anita having sex on a swinging trapeze with Richard, Jean-Claude, and that leopard guy attending, as that is the only thing she hasn't done!*

I read up to book 11 and then gave up. I'm a fast reader when a book isn't demanding, so it doesn't take long for me to read an Anita Blake book.

I don't *think* she'd done the trapeez thing by book 11. Maybe in those Merry Gentry ones. Honestly, I blocked most of those scenes out.

Morning all:) Hope today is going well for you all.

Dresden books are only to book 6 or 7 ( not quite sure) I would say it's one of the few series that becomes better with each book and is just amazing! So keep at it. Storm Front was the most uneven and least well written of the whole series ( see the promise of better is always good)

Well it's assembly time..sigh ( teacher talent assembly...pray for me while I go make a complete ass of myself:)

Good morning and Happy Administrative Professionals Day! I didn’t realize I’d get my own holiday! (see my latest Blue Sun item for details…)

Okay. So many things to catch up on and no I didn’t get back to comment on Monday’s thread (although I probably should); I did read it and that should count for something.

Catching up quickly for yestiddy. NVG, I hope to goodness yer feelin’ better today. Movies and rest is an excellent cure-all.

I’ve only seen Dresden a few times and have enjoyed it every time. Right now the fave shows are House (MD), Law & Order: SVU, maybe Criminal Minds: BAO (‘cause you’re not a show unless you have initials; I’ve only seen one ep so it’s way too early for me to tell: I liked it enough to watch it again to see if I like it at all), Daily Show/Colbert Report, Reno 911. I should be watching more CSI’s (got a problem with Marg, though. I used to LOVE her, but she had work done and it hurt more than it helped *grumble* didn’t need help /grumble) and Dexter (why am I not watching Dexter?).

Actually, Richard was the sweet, romantic good guy. Okay, he was a werewolf, but it didn't stop being being the nice guy. Jean-Claude was the bad boy, and I never found him attractive. Everyone else I knew who read the books did, but not me.

It was pretty much a reply of my crush on Xander. Every other girlfan seemed to like Spike, but I always preferred Xander. Bad boys don't do it for me!

I heard from a friend that the Anita Blake novels were slowly dying, so I haven't read any of them. I did pick up a Merry Gentry without realizing it was the same author......good lord that stuff should come with warning labels.

Also, I think that although the sookie stackhouse books are interesting, they've gotten so convoluted that they're going to start dying soon....although I haven't read the more recent ones so I could be wrong.

So what exactly is Dresden? Other than a city that got firebombed in WWII. I'm always looking for new books, even if it may take me awhile to get my hands on them.

(In my defense for not knowing what ya'll are talking about, I watch exactly one hour of television a week....gotta have my heroes)

Essentially, Harry Dresden is a wizard living in Chicago who helps the police department there with crimes that are of a more supernatural bend.

I highly recommend the books!

We most certainly do...nudge nudge.

No, really. Her first few books had some very explicit sex scenes, and it was really no big deal, as the scenes worked well with what was going on in the plot.

Now, the "plot" revolves around getting Anita laid in every conceivable (ha!) position and circumstance. And that is held together with some brief dialogue. LKH books are silly shadows of what they used to be.

And NV - ditto what MsG said (just above)

Jonny- I am now completely confused??? What on earth do blackheads have to do with a 50's girl group song? That reference was a little obscure even for me.

Wow. Has this ever happened before? Maybe it is time for me to retire.

"MsG did her boyfriend's back". Maybe it's a Michigan thing. Women seem to greatly enjoy taking care of their boyfriends' backs when it come to the *yecch* specialized hygiene I mentioned.

Dexter is a criminal profiler or a forensic investigator or something, but the hook is that he is also a serial killer. Sounds like it'd be right up your alley, MsG!

MsG, I mentioned Dexter to you in the fall I think, when it was on. He is a forensics guy for the miami police, but by night he is a serial killer. He seeks out and kills the folks who get off on a technicality but really deserve it, then discretely disposes of the bodies. I think you would like it.

Ami used to do that to me, the 'specialized hygiene' that Jonny mentioned. Just in some people's nature, I suppose.

It is a very dark show, but it has it's funny parts as well. Kinda like our BDS in that regard. Second season is rumored to start late September/early October, with DVDs this summer of the first.

Oh yeah, Weeds starts back July 30th.
