We weren't watching "Drive" here because, well, in the midst of moving and all that -- our TV isn't even hooked up. And we haven't watched any TV to speak of in 3 1/2 years. (We've seen "Firefly" only on DVD.) And I don't know whether I would've liked it or not. So... I guess it's my fault.

Part of me is saying "Fox is run by idiots!" Part of me is saying "Well, yeah... a serialized show like that, if ratings are in the toilet four episodes in, they probably won't pick up much." Of course, maybe Fox could've scheduled it better.

It's sad, yeah. But I have a feeling DVDs and the Internet are the future for genre television. No idiot (or realistic) networks, no scheduling problems, no need to pander to the Nielsen families or the advertisers. Cross your fingers for the success of the B5 and SG1 DVDs and "Sanctuary", because they're blazing the trail I think we need to follow.

Probably one of the shortest 8-day/4-episode shows I've ever watched and had the carpet yanked out from under me on. Eight Days!!! How can they actually expect to build up any sort of audience in that short of a time?

Hey RevDeadCorpse - what's that animation in your siggy?

And agreed - 4 episodes, all right... but it was in the span of 8 days. You gotta give them more time than that. And I realize that a lot hinges on the premier, but in a world of reruns and Tivo, how likely is it that most people who will watch it are going to watch it at that exact hour?

RPG launcher bought in third world country illegally - $10
Landmines - $50 per
Attack/track dogs bred 1st class - $250-500 per
Highpowered assault rifles - $600 per

"Drive" didn't bring down 24's numbers. This week's episode of "24" ran opposite the return of "Heroes" after a two-month hiatus. All the 'Heroes" fans recorded "24" and watched "Heroes live.

And "Drive" died primarily because they put it up against "Deal or No Deal," one of NBC's most popular nighttime game shows. It's a frelling phenomenon ... and we expect "Drive" to survive against it?

I wouldn't have gotten so attached to the gorram show if I had realized early on they had put it in a doomed slot in the first place.

*sigh*

You would think that they would make some room for a show like drive or at least give it a second chance on FX, but that is fox's logic... I mean what kind of ratings did the shield or any of the other shows on fx get? Whatever is all i have to say to this.

SERGEANTX

Interesting story....

I just went to the video store to buy a copy of Bull Durham (would you believe I had to go to three separate stores to find a copy?). Anyway, while I was there I asked if they had Firefly. Both my copies are on loan, so I figured I could use another. They were sold out, but the clerk started telling me how good it was. When I told him I was a long time fan, he lit up and told me that he was really excited about Nathan Fillion's new show 'Drive'. He asked if I was going to watch it 'when it started up....'. When I told him that it had just been canceled and he was very disappointed. He said, "I didn't even know it had started."

This got me to thinking. I as I stated before, I don't think broadcast television is really the right place for Joss and Tim's stuff. And I think that is, in large part, because of the way our TV habits have changed. It's just not the regular, routine activity it once was. With computers, the internet, DVDs etc... people have - and expect - more control over their entertainment. They also have many more choices. We can't expect people to schedule time to watch a television show once a week. And that pretty much kills a series that is draws heavily on a continuing story arc.

That's why I'm so convinced that serial entertainment needs to find a different venue. One recurring fantasy I have is that Tim and Joss, or people of their ilk, can revive the old tradition of the matinée serial. Frankly, I'd start going to the movies again to see regular episodes of Firefly. I'd much rather do that than wade through TV commercials. And I could see it at times that were convenient for me. Something about the idea of moving the serial format back onto the big screen really appeals to me. Anybody else like the idea?

sorry peeps, the lower ratings on 24 weren't because of Drive, they may have more to do with the fact that 24 just FOXing SUX this year..

9 days. 9 whole days before the axe.

Fox has brought the axe to us too many times. Take it to them.

Tim and Joss need to do direct to DVD, preordered box sets. I've loved everything they've done.

i was really getting into it as well, curse you fox, and infact curse those who think its fun to watch some moron eat his own weight in worms, but ignore anything with acctual value. I want shows that are funny and smart. SOmething that makes me laugh and think, to wonder.

Doesn't seem seem fair those that like these shows get kicked in the sprouts just because it was the most popular show out there, i am acctually sick of it.

Don't know about serials at the theatre but I'd love to see a subscription-based service where I can pick the shows that I want to see. Money goes back to the producers directly instead of the network, you don't have to worry about advertising (or at least not as much) or scheduling, support for the show is obvious, and your potential market is the world. Why the hell should I be limited to what my local stations choose to broadcast, or what the cable company chooses to package together, or even when they decide to show something? Season 3 of Doctor Who is airing right now, why shouldn't I be able to watch if now, especially if I'm willing to pay for it? Yeesh!

Hi...I am new here love all of Joss' works, but now on to Drive, and 24's low ratings. Drive probably had very little to do with that, more people were interested in watching another good show in Heroes. Which is on at the same time as 24.

those f*CKERS F*X there experiencing some of their worst ratings in their history even on their popular TV show so they cancel Drive and show bloody repeats of House. That's real clever make a TV show people start to like it then they cancel it & show repeats of some TV show which will probably get lower ratings than Drive.

It wasn't Drive's fault its F*X's for starting it in April & in F*X worst ratings drought

Oh and this is the first time I really really like something I'm watching & then they cancel it, since Firefly I only watched last year not when it actually fist showed.

I completely agree SergeantX and to that end I give you:

http://www.sanctuaryforall.com/

Certainly many of you have heard of this concept. Sanctuary is a web-based science fiction series that will star Amanda Tappan of Stargate SG1 fame. No networks, no execs, no Nielson boxes to pull the plug. I am thinking this would be a good fit for Firefly or even Drive.

Of course there is also direct to dvd movies to continue the story as Stargate SG1 and Babylon 5 are both doing.

As much as I would like to say that I did not see this coming, I just felt it. Drive was cool, I tuned in and watched and I liked it. I should have know the second I liked it Fox would pull the plug. Truth is the show was simply not pulling in viewers. Unfortunately Fox is a network that panders to reality shows and the like. They do not do character driven shows and that is what Tim creates. People who watch tv today are more interested in instant gratification, T&A or flashy tv with little substance. Unfortunately Drive was shaping up to be far more.

I feel for Tim, Nathan, and the rest of the cast. I wish them the best and hope they find work quickly.

I missed the premier of Drive. Realized it first thing Monday morning (when I logged on here and saw folks chatting about it, and watched it online while at work (shhhhh, don't tell). Watched every episode since (all both of them (that's usually a joke line)), and was really getting into it.

It doesn't matter how heavily promoted a show is if it's on a network that I'm not watching. I wanted to see Nathan, I found out (here) when & where to watch him.

24's numbers fell? Huh. Maybe folks are tired of watching 'the good guy' torture people and really wanted to see folks "Save the Cheerleader. Save the World." I didn't forget to watch 24; I changed the channel as soon as Drive was over.

Want folks to tune in to your show? Make a good one. I get to tell my TV "Tune to this channel at this time, then over here, then this one, etc."
I don't often miss shows I WANT to see.

I'll be substituting fox'd for f**ked from now on.

Ok browncoats, here in multiple choice form are the real reasons DRIVE was dropped by F*><

Reason:
A) All of the contestants stopped at Wafflehouse and never made it to the rally point at which time the mysterious middle man disqualified everyone, then went into the nearest public bathroom and committed suicide by gutting himself (traditional death by blade of ninjas)
B) After the bank job the “Tully Gang”, (as they would have come to be known in a later eps) found that they had stolen the wrong safe deposit box. The one in their possession contained 217 million $$$ so the entire foursome said “Screw this. We don’t need no stinkin race.”
C) The death of the actress in the terrible car wreck at the end had ppl so turned off and disgusted that they became physically ill and turned off their tv sets. Resulting in lower network numbers.
D) Add your own reason…..

Disclaimer: I don't spend much time watching television, so I'm poorly informed in regards to how many fine quality shows are produced amongst all of the networks and are quickly cancelled.

What I don't grok is why Whedon, Minear, et. al., don't seem to be able to sell their entertainment concepts to television broadcasters other that Fox. Yeah, I know that Buffy extended it's run on WB, but it didn't start there.

I'm essentially down to drawing a couple of conclusions. First is that Fox has two out of synch divisions, such that their development side has an good knack for finding entertaining and, dare I say it, intelligent shows, but the marketing side panics quickly on the cash numbers and squashes such shows at the first hint of low ratings. Second is the conspiracy theory angle, which runs to something like: "Here's a quality entertainment, but the television viewing audience is, in general, not formatted to appreciate it (and now we're getting into RWED territory ), and we're just proving that as fact by putting the shows out there and having them fail"; such that Fox is the network willing to fund such experiments.

Really, I've no idea if either concept has anything to do with truth. Still, what I'm getting at is the, um, stupidification of America, though I'm not gonna suggest it's a deliberate trend or happenstance.

I agree 100%. It's a fast food nation we live in and the majority of TV watchers want instant gratification. Minear's shows require a bit of commitment to fully grasp the depth of the characters and premise of the show as a whole. But, once you're in....... he's one of the best out there.

Cable TV is where the quality programing is today. Let the drones have the free stuff. I'll gladly pay a monthly fee for quality programing.

(sigh) I'm tired of liking things. Intelligent storytelling has no place on network TV. I wonder if the series can find a home somewhere else? USA, FX, SCIFI, perhaps HBO. It would be interesting to see what they could do without the FCC restrictions. Considering the show was given a total of 8 days to generate an audience. Why not give it a chance to redeem itself against weaker competition this summer? and find people who might be turned from their normal monday night drudgery.

Have Nathan or Tim commented yet?

I really liked Drive, more than I thought I would. I thought the effects were really cool and Minear did a great job.
With that said, if it hadn't been for our lovely captain, I probably never would have tuned in to watch it in the first place. I did it out of loyalty and expected to be disappointed. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was.
I can understand that people didn't tune in. The premise seemed really cheesy. I wish Fox would have let it run a little longer until the buzz had a chance to spread. How many times have shows picked up after TV Guide runs their "The Best Shows You Aren't Watching"? I don't blame Fox for cancelling shows that don't get ratings. I do blame them for jumping the gun way too much. Cancelling Drive? Stupid! Cancelling Firefly? UNFORGIVEABLE!!!!

Wow, thanks for the link. I've never heard of that type of thing before. It might be a good idea.

I agree 100%. It's a fast food nation we live in and the majority of TV watchers want instant gratification.

I just wanted to point out that I did not make that quote, even though my name is up there.

GORRAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why? Why, why, WHY doesn't that station give our heroes a chance?!?!

This show was good. They did NOT promote it once it aired. Other shows get promoted to DEATH, but not this one. I'm beginning to think they have a personal vendetta against both Joss and Tim (and I'm only a fan of Firefly and Drive)...

I'm waiting for Standoff to be cancelled next. I haven't heard when it was coming back, so I assume because that was another good show, it will be gone soon as well...

It is becoming quite apparent that "Fox" and "Quality" are two words which do not belong in the same sentence, or paragraph...or even possibly the same continent.

It's a tough life on TV, but Gorram it, Tim and Nathan deserve better than this!

I hope that this doesn't hurt too much for them.

Yeah I checked the ratings.. Drive rated 65th over all... Fox's stupid Trading Spouses and several other shows on Fox ranked much lower. It even beat out the re-runs of House that they are replacing it with...they're just morons ...sad sad morons

Note: this is for the exec who cancelled Drive, not the poor sod who opens this. I understand that your job entails opening these, and I bare you no ill will

WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE SO RETARDED? WHY CAN'T YOU GIVE A SHOW THE CHANCE TO ACTUALLY GAIN A FOLLOWING BEFORE GIVING IT THE AXE?! FIRST FIREFLY, AND NOW DRIVE! I WOULDN'T WATCH ANOTHER THING ON YOUR CRAPTASTIC NETWORK IF YOU OFFERED ME $10 MILLION JUST FOR WATCHING ONE OF YOUR BRAINLESS SHOWS.

I HOPE YOUR NETWORK WITHERS AS PEOPLE REALIZE THAT FOX AND QUALITY SHOULD NEVER BE USED IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH!

Sincerely,

A royally pissed off ex-viewer

What do you think, was it vitriolic enough?
