I was browsing through the cast information on IMDB and it appears Alan Tudyk is playing "Sonny" in the anticipated movie "I, Robot" starring Will Smith.

I watched the trailer but I didn't see him in it, although the robot's voice sounded familiar... So I'm wondering if my ears are playing tricks on me, or is Alan merely doing voice acting in the movie? I sincerely hope he has a physical role, since he's so gosh darn funny when he makes faces... which is practically all the time... Which is not saying he has a funny face

Although I remember he can also make us feel for him too, like in Out of Gas. He gets the message accross pretty clear.

Anyways, anyone know anything about the book and might be able to explain who "Sonny" is?

He is the robot

It's his body that the robots movements are baised on (alan is the guy in the funny suit) but we can't see his face

too bad, but hey, this still opens doors for us to see him in other things.

Somebody told me he was in a Knights Tale. Can anyone verify this?

Zoe: Can I have your share?
Mal: No.

Kinda... He is that robot. He is wearing a costume and they CGI over that. At least from what I read it look like that.

And I'm so heart broken that he is in a movie that is ripping the heart and soul (Eyes, Brain and all other organs) out of Asimov's books.

Couldn't they have just put him in a C-3PO type outfit and applied silvery make-up? :(

oh well, good for Alan.

And yeah, I have to agree, the movie does look like a FOX project *cough**cough*

They wouldn't have been able to use a suit due to the design of the robot.

Alan Tudyk played Wat in A Knight's Tale. See also 28 Days with Sandra Bullock where he played a really hilarious coke addict.

For other summer fun that frankly made my heart go kinda pity-pat check out:

He's playing a guy called Steve the Pirate. Got an eyepatch and everything. The release date is currently June 18.

I don't remember all the details, but Isaac Asimov wrote a series of "Robot" themed short stories which were kind of a mixture of "Dixon Hill" and high tech mysteries. There were three robotic laws, which were:

A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

A detective (Sonny?) would come across a mysterious incident involving robots and have to puzzle it out.

These were pretty clever (at least to a 13 year old). I doubt that the new movie will be as intellectually stimulating - probably heavier on the explosions and flashy gadgets than the stories were.

When we saw the trailer this past week my wife asked me how close it looked to the original plot. I leaned over in the theater and said, "Well, it's an Asimov story, so the only action in the story was people sitting down before they talked about what happened off-scene."

At that point in the trailer several hundred robots were reampaging across the screen. I'm thinking it won't be a very accurate adaptation...

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

From everything I have read about this film, I believe it started out with an original screenplay, then someone noticed some similarities between the script and Asimov's stories and suggested they obtain rights to his work so they could use the Three Laws. Other than that I do not think there is much chance the film will resemble Asimov's work. I have not read all of his robot stories and novels, but I have read all of the ones in the "I, Robot" collection (+ a few more) and I am pretty sure there is no character or robot by the name of Sonny in any of them.
