New Movie? New Series? Can we stand it without the original characters?

WE all want another movie. Or at least a majority of us do, I think. And I'd love to see Firefly return to the small screen as well.

However, as I notice that more and more of the cast members are landing new roles, and some of them seem to be rather successful, I was curious. Would we, the fans, be clamoring for a new movie or a new series, if the original actors weren't going to be portraying the characters we have come to love?

I honestly don't know that I would. But I'm curious as to what others think?

Apologies if this has been discussed before.

I could watch new Firefly or Serenity even if some of the cast was changed....it would depend on which roles changed though. For me, some of the cast is absolutely vital and I couldn't deal with any replacement, but some others I think I could live with....not going to say who falls into the former or the latter because I know that every cast member is considered by some Browncoat to be their favorite.

I'd be okay with a different story and different characters set in the verse but no one else can play the crew of Serenity. The actors own those roles.

I agree with singate. If there was a new story with new characters, I'd at least give it a hot, as long as Joss was behind it. However, if they tried to recast any of the existing characters I will be...displeased.

I'm not going to lie and say I wouldn't watch someone else as our beloved crew, but it wouldn't be the same.

I also agree that if we can't get our guys back it should be different characters set in the 'verse.

You can put me in that same boat. While I'd be horribly disappointed if the 'verse didn't go on with tales of the original crew, I'd be open to seeing a different set of characters as long as Joss was at the helm. However when it comes to the original crew, I couldn't stand seeing them recast. I don't think I could handle it as my mind is so ingrained with every eppisode, comic book and the movie itself. The actors own those roles, and they're the only people who can play those parts. But then again, I don't think anyone would be pleased if the captain in the suspenders wasn't Nathan.

I'd give whatever it was a chance, there's no doubt about that, but it isn't what I hope for and it isn't what I'd ask for.

The characters are why I watch, the characters are why I want more. Take away the characters and what do you have? Incredible sets and not much more. I'm sure that there are other characters who we'd like to watch, I'm sure there other characters who could make us love a new show.

I'd still rather have the originals, but I wouldn't forsake new characters with new stories.

I agree with several above me.

I'd have a VERY hard time watching any other actors attempt at playing an existing character, but if Joss was involved I'd give it a shot.

If it was a completely new story in the 'Verse..I'd give that a shot as well, but I do not think that would ever happen.

Fringe fans (There just are not enough hardcore Browncoats to support a network tv show, sadly :/) are significantly less likely to follow a new cast. They may love the SHOW, but they do not necessarily love the 'VERSE.

one more in agreement with what seems to be the popular sentiment. also, i've gotta say, it seems highly unlikely we would ever have to deal with new actors in old characters; just doesn't seem like a joss move. plus, i think everyone involved would realize what a negative reaction that fans would be likely to have to that.

(then again, they cancelled firefly in the first place, so clearly they're not too big with the brains...)

Joss already knows that he can't replace the actors. If he was going to, he'd have done it for the movie, since supposedly big name actors make big money making movies. But he didn't. He loves his cast, and he knows we do.

Obviously, I want all the oringinal characters in their roles. However, if that option isn't open...

I'd give a new set of characters in the same 'verse a chance, so long as Joss was behind it. But not if the crew of our wonderful Firefly-class transport was recast. The actors own those roles, and anyone else trying to play them just would not be able to. That's the reason why I'm avoiding reading the comic book that's apparently out (I have the Companion novels, and Finding Serenity, does that count? ) 2D drawings can't be all that the actors encompass, and I don't want to be disappointed.

THEFANT

What drew me to the show in the first place was the fact that all of the actor's created a fantastic ensemble and every single one of them had perfect chemistry with every other one. there was no "weakest actor" or "strongest actor."

Basically, if a new movie or series is made, I will be completely happy as long as the ensembleness is held and the actors for the prospective new characters are true and honest to their roles. I would, however, have to agree that I could not do very easily without the same captain, and Simon and River would most definitely have to stay; their parts are too crucial.

Hello from Japan. I discovered Firefly this past Christmas; I'm a sci-fi fan but had never heard of this show till a friend in Arizona recommended it. I have now given my DVDs away, bought other sets [plus the movie] as gifts for five other people, and will order another set of DVDs plus the film for myself next month. I'm sure this question is old for all of you guys, but was this show advertised much? I can understand my misssing it over here in Japan, but how did so many other folks who are relatively fond of Sci-fi miss it?? Wondering in Ibaraki, BEB2
PS Is there anything else I can do from over here, besides give these DVDs as gifts?

Welcome!

The problems were (and I'm sure others can add to the list):

--Lack of marketing
--Marketing that did not reflect what the show really was (it was set to rock music, made to look like pure adventure, etc etc)
--VERY BAD time slot for a new show (Friday night. VERY bad time for tv ratings in the USA)
--Episodes aired out of order, so even those that were interested in the show had no idea what was going on (The pilot episode was actually the LAST show to air)
--FOX did not "get" the show at all, kept asking Joss to change it.

Thanks for the quick response; that explains a lot. I guess it's too late then?? I wish I'd know about this show 3-4 years ago; I'd certainly have supported it financially. Bummer; it's so different and quirky. I guess Mr Whedon should have done CSI in space, eh?? Fox strikes me as an impatient network. I sometimes watch it when staying in hotel rooms here; last time I Saw HUFF. That was a Six Feet Under quality show, and they apparently didn't give it a chance to find an audience, despite all its Emmy awards. Back in the sixties shows were given a good while to find an audience; now you have to swim right away, or you get flushed down the gurgler. I'm just so sorry to have heard about this too late. The friends who received the DVDs also like the show. And they're passing the DVDs around Glasgow -- Scotland -- and BC. BEB2

On that subject, have you heard of Drive? It was created by Tim Minear (one of the minds behind Firefly) and stared Nathan Fillion (Malcolm Reynolds) and aired on FOX. It was on the air for just two weeks before getting pulled.

And to add to the list of how Firefly failed, around me it was always being preempted by sports. Hard to build ratings when it's never on.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'd watch The Adventures of Badger and Saffron: Wacky Fun.

Or how about a reality show? Let's Rob Niska's Skyplex!

Seriously though, I'd love a prequel about the Unification War, and in that case you could have younger actors playing Mal and Zoe. That's about the only way I could accept a different cast with the characters we know.

Seriously, though- I can't see anyone but Mal captaining Serenity.

What if a new show or movie was more of a spin-off, with one or two of the major characters still active- and the others making periodic guest appearances? It worked well with Angel, and would keep the 'balance'.

I don't like that idea.

To have a spin off with some of the original characters requires that the crew be broken up. I'm still a bit pissed off at the makers of Stargate because they ended SG1 by giving the impression that the team was staying together still doing what they had been doing, which I thought was the best way to end it, and then they screwed that over by having Carter abandon the team and go to another galaxy. It's not that I don't want to see more Carter, or more of any of our crew, it's just that I'd rather keep the gang together.

I ran across this thread a couple of days ago, and took some time to think about it...

If Firefly comes back, with Joss at the helm, I'd watch it..

The question is, where to start if it does come back..

1-Between the end of the first season and the movie ( knowing that Wash and Book get killed off) This way you can bring back all the original characters..

2- After the movie, bringing back Mal, Zoe, Simon, River, Inara and Kaylee, with Flashbacks with Wash and Book?

3- with a whole new crew set in the same Planetary system ( with brief run ins with the original characters as guests)

I'd go for option 2, with Josh at the helm personally, but any return to this setting with Joss Whedon leading it would be fantastic... ( New series, New Movie, new Straight to DVD series, new Straight to DVD Movie, etc....)

Jayne: "Shiny. Let's be bad guys."
Mal: "We're not gonna die. We can't die, Bendis. You know why? Because we are so...very...pretty. We are just too pretty for God to let us die."
Mal: "So no more runnin'. I aim to misbehave."
Mal: "No. They're not gonna see this comin'."

All of these are good ideas. Where I'd start would be before the movie so we could have more Wash and Book. Besides, I'd like to know what happened between the BDS and the BDM. But before the second season, I'd run Serenity the movie so I could pick up from where the movie left off with completely new story lines.

Well, first off, (and I don't know if this has already been said) I doubt we'd have to worry about something like this, the main concern is if we can manage to get another film (buy those special editions), but if another film IS made, I think most of the cast would be very excited to be on board. Jewel has said she'd like to be, Adam and Nathan clearly love the show to death, etc.

What Kayna said. :) If Joss were behind it, with a different band of briggands, I'm fair certain I could live with that. It would be kinda like watching a different spin-off of Star Trek, or Stargate: I wouldn't watch it as Firefly, but more like Firefly-Londinium, or some such. :)

I was actually thinking about this thread not too long ago in the means of if there was another Tale from the Verse minus the original crew, how could that be pulled off.

What if Joss did a story on origins?

As in perhaps sort of 'documenting' the lives of the original Tams, Reynolds, Fryes, Cobs, whichever and how many, just after they borded arc ships and left earth that was. Perhaps the families were all on the shame ship (working on the ship maybe, dealing with the dangers of the trip and/or passengers) and knew each other before touching down on Shinon and going their separate ways. Giving an interesting link to what would happen to their progeny down the road and tying in the original franchise itself.

Regardless, it's just me, babbling.

Gotta have Mal, Zoe, Jayne (well, Jayne), Inara and Kaylee. Losing Wash is tough but Joss can write another pilot loony in. Sheperd is gone too but another mysterious character with secrets can be written.

First of all, hi! My name is Marv and I'm from Germany. I discovered Firefly around christmas last year and since then I've become addicted. The characters are so lovable, the storylines so unique and well-conceived, why Fox cancelled it is beyond me.

Which is why I really wouldn't like a new cast with a new story. I'd very much prefer to see them go on with Wash and Book. I'm not saying they couldn't do it with two new guys, but it'd be extremely hard to replace them adequately.
