Um, did anybody see this!?!?!

Been away from the boards for quite some time, but with all the Joss goodness coming at us, had to get back on.

Just watched the third act of Dr. Horrible. OMG OMG OMG!!!! Anyone who is watching Dr. Horrible, all I can say is that it is quintesential (sp) Joss. I don't even know what to do with myself right now. And that is so Joss! In 40 short minutes, he made me care, got me invested, and then ripped me to pieces.

God I love that man!

Yesyes lol, I feel so alone that people haven't all seen it after being online 45 minutes! :-P

Sooooooo Joss. All I can say. Like, I feel like after "Brand New Day" we should have all seen it coming... but we didn't lol. If we had thought about it, "ok it's joss, who's gonna... yeah" so we should have guessed but we didnt lol.

But yeah.... That's dr horrible, after all that. And... yeah. I liked it. But like Serenity, it's not something I'll watch every day, after... yeah, well you know the similarity.

Hey Whitefall, glad to see someone here is watching - and agonizing!

It's just Wash all over again!

And yeah, I don't watch stuff over and over again, but I will absolutely get the dvd when it comes out.

I hear they are working on a singing commentary for it. Too Fun!

I think I'm one of the few who really did NOT like act III. I absolutely loved the first two acts, but the third act had very forgettable songs and the ending left a lot to be desired, IMO.

It just seemed like the ending was very rushed and didn't really "end" anything.

It's too bad, because those first two acts were pure gold!

kinda agree, houdini. the songs weren't that great, and the end, well- it all makes sense, and i suppose from joss we couldn't really expect anything else, but- i dunno. just didn't do it for me.

I enjoyed it. Joss needs to stop crushing his fans though. Honestly, he seems to always make you feel like you've lost a brother/sister at the end of his shows. At least with Serenity, you get to enjoy the fact they exposed this great evil to the world... This, this is just a kick in the face.

If I ever need an emotional roller coaster, I'll just check out the latest thing Joss is working on.

It had the same effect on me as it did when I saw Cabaret on stage... made me think...but I loved it. The songs weren't up to par with the first two acts, but it still was good. And who knows what Joss will do with it next. He's kicking around sequals and the like. Maybe

, but its Joss, so I'm figuring not. His characters live in a (quazi)real world and when something happens, it usually stays that way. That's what makes Joss Joss.

Personally I loved Dr Horrible's last songs, but i hated Captain Hammer's song. I mean, i know we're supposed to hate it, but hammer... blah.

Frankly, I'm imressed with this not because Joss killed somebody. I'm getting used to that. But her last words, it's a full-on tragedy. Her death really isn't the thing, it's that she never knew Billy, his secret, his life.

I didn't really like Captain Hammer's song either--I thought he was gonna say something completely inappropriate/assholey (well, moreso than "we had sex"). I quite liked Dr. Horrible's songs though.

But I thought the comedy in this one was damn funny--very Joss with mixing humor when it's really needed.

And the end...wow. The song at the end was so damn sad :( & I couldn't believe how sad it was considering I had only known the characters for like 20-something min. :( *sigh* If I'm ever in one of those depressing moods, I'm definitely watching it again ;)

Joss's works speaks volumes. I mean, we expect something entertaining and campy and popcorn-flicky from something titled a "Sing-along Blog," but you don't expect to be torn around. But this is Joss--he makes a statement and that's amazing.

I actually really liked Act 3. I mean, sure, I was just in a state of disbelief at the ending, I mean, sure, it's Joss, but I honestly thought it was going to end all happy and such.

As for the songs, I loved all of them, though I wasn't a big fan of the Bad Horse songs for some reason. Captain Hammer's songs were great I thought.

Anyway, now for the real question....how long before we can buy the DVD with all the great special features!?!

SPOILERS WILL ENSUE...

The twist at the end when Penny dies is classic Whedon, hits you right there but made an up till that point ok (not as good as 1 & 2) episode into the best episode. I thought Dr.Horrible was gonna reverse the death ray & save her but he didn't,makes it different & that more touching compared to the average comedy, but wait if the girl dies that makes it a Tragedy, but not to us Whedon slaves, happened all too often but that's why we love him

Dr.Horrible's is just begging for a sequel now, can't wait for the DVD & Soundtrack.

I am all over the Dr. Horrible thing since I heard about it a few weeks ago on the web.

Just finished watching Act III and I´m totally excited. It´s so refreshing and just FUN.

Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer, this time self absorbed and arrogant: "The hammer is my penis" , LOL, so hillarious.

And the SINGING, did I mention the SINGING part yet, what an unexpected turn. He is indeed a great actor as the rest of the cast.

Not only is it great, witty entertainment, its also a statement to the entertainment industry, the future is here already.

I´m thinking, if this had been with one of the big networks, would it have turned out as surprising and exciting as it turned out doing it independendly? - I doubt that.

It proves the point, if you are willing to take a risk and you have a strong fanbase anything is possible.

And I´m sure as soon as the DVD is out, Joss Whedon will make his money back.

There is this line in "THE MESSAGE" that came to my mind while watching Dr. Horrible:

"When you can't run, you crawl, and when you can't crawl - when you can't do that...you find someone to carry you".

I think the fans have carried him very well.

Indeed, he has done the impossible and that makes him mighty...

Me again,

How to get hold of Dr. Horrible:

Its easy, got to www.drhorrible.com also for international viewers, it works. I live in Germany and watched all three acts already.

It will only be online til tomorrow, than they take it off completely and we all need to wait for the DVD.

If you want to get all the infos what has happened in the past 5 days in the media and with the fans, check out:

www.doctorhorrible.net

There are t-shirts as well, which are really cool.

It´s also available for download at I-tunes where its No 1 of the download charts, keeping in mind that you can watch it for free as well, this is a huge statement. People are actually willing to pay for good art and thats just great.

I think the browncoats from all over the world had a huge impact in making this project so sucesssfull in only 5 days;)))

enjoy

I hate him. I love him - but...I just hate him. DAMN YOU JOSS!!!!

Anyway, I go from laughing hysterically at Cap'n Hammer "I think this is what pain feels like! Mama!!! Maternal figure!!!"

To gasping.

To almost crying.

To hating the man who created it.

Back to loving him for catching me by surprise like that.

Sound a bit familiar? Change Captain Hammer to Wash, and Penny to...Wash...(impaling and all) and you have the exact same emotions. Should've seen it coming. But no...

Loved it/hated it.

You know how it goes.

It's strange but even though I enjoyed the first two acts, it didn't feel very "Joss".

What happened at the end of the third act, that was very Joss. Very Joss indeed. Of course, it's very Shakespeare too - create a character, make the audience love them then kill them off brutally and needlessly.

Loved the red Dr Horrible outfit - if I was going to a convention, that's what I'd wear.

Me too - I was wondering if red was possible even before episode III. I wonder where we could get one...

I was surprised because I honestly expected Dr. Horrible himself to be killed off - he was too good hearted to be evil, and too in love with the power of evil to be good. He couldn't accomplish anything riding the fence like that, he wasn't fully realizing either potential with in himself. So I assumed he would sacrifice himself for Penny or the world or peace or something at the last minute. Instead, Penny's death becomes the catalyst for the burning away of the good in Dr. Horrible's character, allowing him to fully wallow in the dark side. Wow. Very mythic.

I can see a bunch of people going to a con dressed as Dr. Horrible, or Captain Hammer, either way they would look great.

So my full review of the three parter-

I thought all the acts were solid as were most of the songs. In Act I, I wasn't too keen on Hammer's 'A Man's Gotta Do' song, but Nathan just sells the character flawlessly, and the funniest moment of that act is when he grabs Dr. Horrible by the throat, mentions gently wafting curtains, an proceeds to bash Dr. H into the hood of the van while Penny sings, keeping rythym with her song. Further brilliance goes into how completely incompatable he is for Penny. Loved how he was in the Act II duet (the best song out of the whole thing) not really caring for the homeless, or yogurt, or ducks. He saw a pretty girl and did things she like to do to get another notch on his belt as well as in the end torment Horrible. It seems not alot of people cared for his last song, but I thought it was solid, he was trying hard to say something memorable, but in the end it further showed his colors.

Felicia Day was the perfect sweet, innocent, gentle spirit for a love interest. She is a selfless person that puts others first and wants to make the world a better place, a brilliant contrast against both Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer. One wants to destroy the status quo and have people fear him, while the other is self centered and mearly playing superhero for the glory and attention. She was everything neither were, she truly was good.

And NPH was the perfect actor for Dr. Horrible. The more Horrible allowed to show his layers, the more it seemed he was just the smart guy in school that was a scrawny and picked on by the jocks, which in turn made him take up ideals that he just didn't suit (and then found as a villian there was another buff jerk that he was going to have to face, this one didn't play sports, he threw cars). And we all knew from the first act it wasn't going to end well. Dr. Horrible loved someone who was purely good, but wanted to bring about evil, there was no way he was going to get both. Penny wouldn't have gone out with a super villian (she probably wouldn't have squished a fly), and the super villian circut wouldn't have room for a moral and sweet girlfriend. But in the end due to Captian Hammer's streak of mean, him taking Penny gave him the drive and vengeance he needed to accomplish what he needed to reach his super villian status. It however came at a tragic cost which was a brilliant twist, I thought Dr. H would have realized the consequences of his actions and sacrificed himself for Penny. Instead with her death what good was left in him died away and he finally got what he wanted.

Yes it would have been great they could have lived happily ever after, but it wasn't about living Happily Ever After, it's about what you lose to achieve something that big. There are always sacrifices, however some may be more than you bargained for. Dr. Horrible didn't see that, and what was sacrificed for his dream was something that he couldn't cope with. In the last shot, underneath all of the fame he gets from being a super villian, deep down he can't feel anything. Bittersweet, but brilliant.

Ash

okay, I feel like a total clueless twit here, but I was a little confused (or really a lot confused) by the very last seconds of act 3

we see billy in front of the computer as if watching a blog-- billy, not dr horrible. that's the first time we see him on the blog like that.

are we to think that he imagined the whole thing while sitting at the computer or that he gave up being dr horrible or...something else.

somebody please clear that up for me!!

and from what I'm reading, I guess I was the only one who saw the "shocking surprise" coming. I wasn't caught off guard by it at all. just thought it was funny the way it was handled- being a repeat of what happened to other characters in other joss projects (was I vague enough not to be spoilery?)

earthgirl... I took it to mean that although Doctor Evil embraced his horribleness, and joined the Evil League of Evil, underneath he is still Billy...
and more lost and alone than he ever was before.
Of course that was just me, the way I interpreted it.

I seriously loved this, but I was expecting a light musical romantic comedy with some kind of happy ending...
so I was surprised, and crushed (not quite 'Wash dying' me sobbing crushed, but still upset).

Neil Patrick Harris really owned this thing, he was amazing,
Nathan was hysterically funny... I loved his 'Superman' who never before had experienced any pain....

And Felicity was so sweet... have you guys all seen her online show 'The Guild'? It is a comedy about online gamers... and it is a riot!

i've been surprised by how few people across the net have mentioned this -
i think it's maybe the adrenalin factor.
you spotted something really great.

i think the last scene works on so many levels -
for emotonal 'truth' it locks tight to the very end of Buffy's Storyteller episode
which is also genuinely powerful.

that stepping back - or distancing, is a classic Whedon device;
think of the opening of Serenity where the Universal logo is used.
And again where the following scenes are constantly cut away from
to reveal them as viewed recordings.

given the net based intimacy of Dr Horrible, this is even more the case.
The film opens with Dr Horrible saying "ok Emails!"

This is Joss.

The film ends with Billy reacting with shock to what he is seeing
(whether in his own blog or one he identifies with - or just in his mind, whatever).

This is us.

There are many other moments where fans are scrutinised -
but more than that, the film asks 'who do we identify with'
and 'why?' and 'what does it take for people to react -
and then take that reaction into the 'real world'.
Just as Mal does after he has watched 'The Miranda film'.
He is profoundly changed.

So Billy is just another viewer. But he has lived the Dr Horrible dream

(unreal - check out the League of Evil, Napolean and a horse straight out of Caligula???)-

and in that dream, everything that Embers said also applies.

Quote:

somebody please clear that up for me!!

uh, i probably just really didn't help with that (eep!).

Embers wrote:

and that is a very fair point!
There are always a lot of ways of looking at stuff -
and what you see changes on each viewing.

this was just some of my thinking -
i don't say i'm RIGHT and that's that, just how it seemed to me is all.

right, well - enooooough of me!

I absolutely loved Hammer's song in Act III. Right at the end...he gets to his big finish and then is frozen...

...forward 3 minutes of Horrible singing and then Hammer wakes up and finishes his song.

Hilarious!

Also, NPH rules!

I love that Penny's dieing words were " ....Captain Hammer will save us" considering he's the one that killed her...I squealed with laughter, and then felt bad coz the poor deluded girl died, and she was such a sweety despite her irritating lack of perception. Felicia Day is my new favourite "female role model figure to inspire young people" Not just an accomplished actor, but a violoinist, Mathematician, writer, director etc etc....so cool.

I didn't pick up on that -- very cool.

I was chatting with a girl who had already seen Act 3 before I had had a chance to watch it. And I was openly speculating about the end (hoping she might flinch if I got it right).
When I said "neither Hammer or Horrible can die, really. It has to be Penny -- and the two of them will be the death of her." she quickly changed the subject. I should have known I was headed in the right direction.
I agree whole-heartedly with what's been said above. There really wasn't any other way to end it.
I love the irony of Penny's last statement. It's a true Shakespearian tragedy that Billy believes she loved Hammer when in fact she didn't -- and she was actually missing her laundry buddy.
I've seen mixed reviews from Browncoats. But you can put me in the LOVED IT category.
Now if I could just get those !@#$ songs out of my head! Way....too....catchy....
