I think donation or subscription -- or just budgeting through pre-sale -- models are kind of interesting. The guild was fan-financed its first season -- one of the internet structures I'm investigating could be similar. The more direct connection between the fan and the artist, the better. It would be fun to announce a project with and actor and THEN find out what the budget was based on the fans.

The problem with that is it works for him but that's because he's got a die hard following of fans. If some new artist came out of no where and tried it they'd have a much more uphill battle.

True, but on the other hand, how big of a fanbase did The Guild have, before it's first season.

And, as he mentioned, having a actor with a following attached helps a lot.

My point is:
1. Joss is thinking about it.
2. Joss could actually make it work for his projects.
3. which means one day it may work for us die hard Firefly/Serenity fans.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I'll pre-order new Firefly episodes as soon as Joss gives the word.

It sounds basically like pitching a "package" to a studio/network; most of them won't touch a project until you have a few names attached --i.e., you already have a certain amount of money (the people attached are willing to pitch in some funds), so then the studio decides how much money they're gonna contribute.

Sounds somewhat similar to Indy films does it not? Private funding. Nice to see he's looking into it. The internet is the future of entertainment, but Hollywood doesn't want to realize it and lose their hold. They'll eventually come around (as they did with television) but it's going to be a looong uphill battle. Until then it'll be people like Joss who pave the way. Exciting.

I often wondered...couldn't he have an online collection to finance (or partially finance) a movie?

Or an investor's buy-in option.
Anyone who donates a sum over, say, $1,000 gets a share of the profits (if any).
Best case scenario, your $1,000 could make back $1,500.
Worst case scenario, you're out $1k, but you have a new Serenity movie.

Exactly. And Joss has been thinking along those lines too. Whoo-hoo!

Even if you might not like it because it's not Firefly, watch it anyway. Having Dollhouse succeed gives Joss more pull in Hollywood to do more, which means that with enough pull, he can make another Firefly movie.

Just look at J.J. Abrams as an example as to what he is able to accomplish with a successful run on TV.

Give Joss the power to do the same.

I'm actually a little worried about the amount of money I would pay to see firefly/serenity in 'moving picture' form again.

I just brought a house and I would STILL consider paying thousands.

My financial adviser just had a heart attack..

One must be careful in these situations not to make false conclusions. For instance, though the guild did take donations from fans, does anyone actually know if that fully financed the series? I would find it hard to believe that would be the case.

I'll also point out that it is very very cheap to produce such a thing. Especially compared to actually producing a show like what is currently on TV.

I'll also point out that just because someone pledges to support an endeavour like this, does not mean that they will actually follow through on it. It doesn't matter the reasons. The fact is that it is likely that only a small fraction of the pledged money would actually be seen by the production.

I'll also go ahead and disagree with Joss on "The more direct connection between the fan and the artist, the better." Why? Because, artists tend to be functionally retarded when it comes to finances, etc. That's what accountants, etc are for. So, there definitely is a threshold to how close a relationship the fan base is to the artist. There are also creative concerns. Because, the fans could turn around and say that they will withhold funds unless X or Y is done.

All that really needs to happen is for the supporting structure for a production to be appropriate for the production itself. Why have 2 producers, 3 executive producers, all having assistants, etc, etc, etc if the production doesn't justify it. Because, that's what I see. Enormous structures put in place because "that's how it's done" without regard to if it makes any sense.

It's really all become about protecting ones job and thus, the current status quo (in hollywood and pretty much everywhere else). And that sort of thinking makes costs go through the roof which the consumer ends up paying for.

Seriously, if instead of following the current massive bullshit structure, they just divided up the duties to an appropriate number of people (which undoubtedly would be less), then they'd, in all likeliness, save a shitload of money. Money that they would be better spend producing the content instead of spinning wheels.

DUDIELOVER

Joss--just say the word on subscriptions/donations for a new movie, I'm sure all of us can afford a few pennies or more. With so many of the cast otherwise engaged it is hard to imagine another firefly series! I play the big lotto every week and swear if I ever win 20 million or more, I'll only keep enough to fund my family's health care and bills and the rest to Joss for a movie or whatever. Hoping Joss can do a tiny Firefly episode online--look at the Horrible-a success. Watched Dollhouse and will keep it up (if Fox lets it alone) and have bought nearly everything out there--the dvds and blu ray, multiple times, I give them away to the uninitiated.

Maybe this article explains why Joss is looking for alternative funding. Maybe more Firefly is closer than we think?

Thanks for posting that article Katesfriend... I thought it was fantastic

If Dr.Horrible could dominate for weeks and send shivers around the backs of TV execs around the world...imagine what even the whisper of more firefly/serenity would do.

The cast would come rushing back (in their spare time around their other jobs ofcourse) and Joss could have hundreds of thousands of dollars from fan donations before he even looks through a camera

Its not that much of a stretch to imagine maybe one or two episodes of firefly a year under this kind of format..
