The writer or the captain?

I am a fan of both Firefly and Castle and it got me thinking. Which character do you prefer? The rebellious captain or the quirky writer?

I think Castle has more of an appealing personality.

Inara: You have a strange sense of nobility Captain. You'll lay a man out for implying I'm a whore but you keep calling me one to my face.
Mal: I might not show respect to your job, but he didn't respect *you*. That's the difference. Inara, he doesn't even see you.
Inara: Well, I guess death will solve the issue to everyone's satisfaction.

Oh, I hafta go with Mal. He's a cross between John Wayne and Buck Rogers. Joss was touched by the gods when he dreamed up Firefly.

You're right; Castle has a more appealing personality. This is why I prefer Mal. He can be bitter and foul, like black coffee with a stranger's tooth floating in it. This is a taste I accquired; tastes like my own mouth.

Mr. Toad, I see Mal as more of a cross of Clint Eastwood and Han Solo. He's a shade darker than the Duke was in anything but The Searchers.

As Badger said, Mal is "still a soldier. A man of honor in a den of thieves." There is a darkness to Mal in that he has lost faith. But there is a strong upright hero aspect that I don't see in Clint. Mal doesn't kill unless he has to. Clint is just itching for someone to "make (his) day." Mal is the sargent. He's the captain. He's the leader type. He always looks after his crew. Mal is dependable that way. You can trust him, as Zoe does, as they all do. I don't see such qualities in Solo or Clint but you usually find them in John Wayne films. I love Clint's films but he is usually very dark and queerly mysterious, even dangerous. Han may come through in the end but he is primarily in it for himself, he's not a team player let alone the team leader.

And I just threw in Buck Rogers because he was the original space traveling hero. :)

Hmm. Depends on my mood and location.

Castle is my Irish Setter, Guinness, personified. Guinness was smart, handsome, athletic, sensitive, curious, and had a sense of humor. But mostly, if there wasn't anything fun going on, he'd create his own fun. He forever was running around with a glove or slipper or sock just waiting for someone to chase him. Once he found a turkey that we'd stashed up there because there was no room left in the oven.

Now Mal, on the other hand, is a Gordon Setter. Gordons are smart, handsome and athletic too, but they are more serious. When there is work to be done, they focus.

Anyway, to bring this back to the question, if I were in a big city and wanted to have some fun, go to a good restaurant, have a cocktail, go dancing or make out, I'd pick Castle.

If I were out in the country or wilderness, or were hanging out with friends in low places, wanted a friend to talk to (or to make out), I'd want Mal.

I think that as a character, I have more respect for Mal. He's lived through more and had greater responsibilities. You can depend on him in a crisis. He’s not a fair-weather friend.

One thing that I'm starting to wish with Castle is that they would give Nathan more to do with the character. The light hearted banter is fine, but I'd wish they'd give his character some more serious situations(I haven't seen all of Season 3, so maybe they have). It's not as if he couldn't deliver.

Someone once pointed out that Castle is probably more of what Mal was before the war. Still, I take my friends with their hard hits and life experiences, so I'd go with Mal as he is.

Your metaphor has got Castle exactly right. He's all fun.
But Mal has those serious , dark side issues- responsibility, leadership, defeat, loss and past pain, that give him a better character for an actor to work with.
