I actually got to get up close to Atlantis, back in '98, when she was in for Major Modification at Plant 42 in Palmdale, so I think of her as "my bird".
(Don't tell anybody, but I tapped the port side flaperon hinge with the back of my fingernail when nobody was looking! )

I just can't believe it's all over! 3/5 of my life has been devoted to this thing; you should see all the stuff I've collected!

FLAT OUT LIE!!

The shuttle program is scheduled for mandatory retirement in 2011, in accord with the directives President George W. Bush issued in the Vision for Space Exploration.

In an internal e-mail apparently sent August 18, 2008 to NASA managers and leaked to the press (published September 6, 2008 in the Orlando Sentinel), NASA Administrator Michael Griffin stated his belief that the Bush administration had made no viable plan for U.S. crews to participate in the International Space Station beyond 2011, and that OMB and OSTP were actually seeking its demise.[11][12] The email appeared to suggest that Griffin believed the only reasonable solution was to extend the operation of the shuttle beyond 2010, but noted that Executive Policy (i.e., the White House) is firm that there will be no extension of the shuttle retirement date,

So you can thank whoever was President in 2008. Hint-- his name was Bush.

not to fret!

I'm pretty sure the point of having it end in 2011 was so Congress could approve a new budget for a new program...Not to end the program with nothing to replace it. That was Obama's choice.

I live in Florida, very close to the cape, and have seen every shuttle launch since 1990 (most of them from my backyard). This is truly a dark day, and it's incredibly sad for all the brilliant people that have worked on this program that will now be out of work. Their minds are being wasted instead of used for new and innovative technology that we all take for granted.

I am thankful that I was able to experience all that I have while I could, and I hope that soon a new program will be developed so children can have a profession to dream of once more. I'm still going to have students create spacecraft designs in class...maybe one of them will be the key, lol.

This may be an unpopular viewpoint (Primus knows it took me a while to adjust to it), but based on things I've learned from other sites, the end of the shuttle program might end up being a good thing in the long run.

Don't make faces; I want us to get off this rock more than anyone, and I agree that our fate as a species is directy tied to moving into space.

But after over 50 years, NASA hasn't done it. Meanwhile, we're into the age of civillian rocketry. Between SpaceX, the Virgin Orbiters, the Falcon, and the upcoming Falcon Heavy, we're already building spaceships that China complains it can't compete with (in terms of cost and lift-capability). And we're doing it with no help from NASA. Low Earth Orbit is becoming a civillian venture, as opposed to the purview of politics and corporations --the same thing happened years ago with air travel, and with sea travel centuries ago.

All we need is to find something profitable out there to give us a destination, and we'll b able to reach the Moon, then Mars, then just about anywhere.

It's not gonna be easy or cheap, and it's probably gonna be maddeningly slow to get there, but in a hundred years or so, people may call this a triumph.

I watched, and had a good sniffle over the whole situation. Didn't have to go downstairs to fire up the TV - - just smacked the alarm clock and hit switches on this little thing on my desk.

I was raised on the sort of sci-fi in which a guy scrapes his last few credits together, picks up a jalopy rocket off a junk pile and takes off for Alpha Whozit for whatever reason makes a good story.

Sound familiar? I really thought that was where we were headed, eventually, and maybe in my lifetime, given the rapid progress we were making in just about every other field of endeavor.

So yesterday morning I tickled the ivories - - well, black plastic - - and used this thing, capacity nearly undreamed of thirty years ago - - to watch in perfect fidelity as the resource-hungry, cumbersome, tetchy, thirty-year-old lump of technology was shoved for the last time out of our gravitational field and into The Black.

Congratulations to all who worked on it, and to all who sail in her, but when? when? when?

There are more bad ideas to get angry about: Republicans intend to cancel the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the Hubble. Last week, the Republican controlled House Appropriations Science Subcommittee recommended terminating that NASA Science program. - http://appropriations.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=25

The same bill that kills the Webb Space Telescope includes a general provision prohibiting NASA or the Office of Science and Technology Policy from engaging in bilateral activities with China unless authorized by the Republican controlled Congress. You know those quirky Republicans won't be giving their authorization.

That's an ignorant statement. I'll leave it at that since I'd rather this thread try to stay on topic. :)

Ending the shuttle program wouldn't be so bad if there was a replacement ready for lift-off, privatized or not. The problem is that all of the ideas for new spacecraft are still blueprints or in early test stages. That leaves a huge gap in time between the end of the NASA shuttle program and whatever comes next; time that's wasted. In the gap, we'll be relying on other countries to take command of space entry. Now, it's nice that planet Earth can still make it to space, but it sucks that it won't be America. After all, we used to be so gung-ho about Space, the Final Frontier. It seems that, in these economic times, allowing the shuttle program to end without a replacement is a viable option. I don't believe that. I believe that if the government really tried, if they really wanted to, they could have found some sort of budget to at least fund development for the next big thing. Or to fly a shuttle a couple more times. Something. Anything to keep space exploration alive. For example, they could have cut funding to the healthy school foods program since most schools can't afford fresh fruit and vegetables every day to be sauteed or stir-fried or whatever. Just give them a sandwich and plenty of exercise instead of tv and internet. But I digress. If the government still wanted Space to be on the agenda, it would be. It's sad how many people will be out of work because of it; intelligent, brilliant people that studied for years to learn something so innovative and daring as to venture into space. It's also sad how few people understand the ramifications of the program ending. The development of new technology will be stifled and innovation of current technology will slow.

Anywho, I'm beginning to ramble and should really get to bed now. I feel very strongly about space exploration and it saddens me immensely to see this day come without anything to replace the program.

Yes, go to sleep. But when you wake, know that it was 7½ years ago that Bush decided to shutdown the shuttle. The most recent 2½ years of Obama could not possibly undo the mistakes of the previous 5 years of Bush, no matter how much you want it. And "really trying, if they really wanted to" is childish thinking. The Republicans wouldn't allow it.

By the way, shuttle flew 3 times in 2011. Bush wanted it shut down in 2010, so JenJen has already got the wish of extra flights that weren't going to happen if Bush had it all his way. STS-133 in February, scrubbed from 2010 because of a leaky tank, STS-134 in May, STS-135 in July.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14, 2004 — President Bush proposed on Wednesday to develop a new spacecraft to carry Americans back to the moon as early as 2015, and to establish a long-term base there as an eventual springboard to Mars and beyond. He spelled out the financial details only through December 2008, and said NASA would receive just $1 billion in new money over that time. Bush would also shift $11 billion in federal money from other NASA programs over that same time frame to make way for the program. [That $11 billion shift? It never happened.] Under Bush's plan, the space shuttle fleet would be retired in 2010. - www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3950099/ns/technology_and_science-space/t/bush-se

Two, its not that I'm actually interested in having a US/Cino Alliance, I only mentioned that because of the television show that we all hold so near and dear and which this site is about. Most of the charactors in it have American accents and speak Mandarin on the side, so I assume that the original Alliance was between the US (or possibly Canada) and China. that's the only reason I said it.

RionaEire, you're making peace too quickly. It was never about Firefly and the Chinese. It's about fatcat Hal Rogers, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, being in charge of the money for NASA. http://halrogers.house.gov/

The Republican Hal Rogers would forbid NASA from talking to any Commies, anywhere, anytime. It's too late for Rogers to forbid talking to Russians because NASA astronauts are already riding into orbit on the Soyuz, but it is not too late for him to forbid NASA talking with the Chinese Commies. And that is why the small-minded Republican has a general provision prohibiting NASA or the Office of Science and Technology Policy from engaging in bilateral activities with China unless authorized by Hal Rogers. http://appropriations.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=25
0023

It is wrong that Rogers, who brags about being a hillbilly born in rural Kentucky and representing the poorest Congressional District in the nation, is applying his quirky prejudices to NASA. He hates all foreigners, but he really hates Chinese Commies. Now that he is a powerful man, he's going to do something about it. Look out NASA, because here comes Hal Rogers to kick your ass and cut your budget.

Hal Rogers is on the list of the Most Corrupt Members of Congress. - http://richmondregister.com/localnews/x155232819/McConnell-Rogers-on-M

He tells voters that he is proud to be on the list because it means he is doing his job right. He even had the Daniel Boone Parkway renamed after himself. That is man with a ton of self-regard for his own importance and accomplishments.

Why be cozy with China? They don't have much to offer the US Space Program now, unlike the Russians who have plenty. But in 25 years the situation will change and the Chinese space program could be radically better.

Republican Hal Rogers is not waiting 25 years. He wants the law set in concrete that NASA shall never cooperate with the Chinese like it did with the Russians for the ISS. (AFAIK, Republicans instinctively hate all Communists. Hal Rogers is displaying that same peculiar anti-commie twitch. He should have a doctor look at it.)

In all seriousness, we reall got a LOT of extra flights from this program, which was originally supposed to run only 15 years. The STS program was concieved and created in the 1960's, and took two DECADES to come to pruision when the first shuttle was launched. By all intents and purposes, it should have died back in early to mid- 1990's. Were lucky we got THIS much use out of it.
