not sure how reliable this is, but on the IMDB website, this story was posted:

Sarah Michelle Gellar has refused to rule out reprising her role as vampire slayer Buffy Summers in a big screen adaptation of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, as long as the script is good. The actress, married to Freddie Prinze Jr., said goodbye to her Buffy character last year after seven years, and although she was happy with the series ending, she does believe there is scope for a movie version. She says, "Clearly, you're going to disappoint people. I mean, I was very happy with the finale, but I still believe that it should have been two hours. I believe there wasn't enough Xander (Nicholas Brendon's character). I believe that certain things get left out, and when you make a film you're setting yourself up to disappoint people. I say that now, and in a year someone could send me the script and I could think it's great and we could be at the junket a-year-and-a-half from now. But I will say that I have a lot of hesitations about it and it is not something I particularly want to do at this time." Before Gellar landed the role of Buffy, Kristy Swanson played the sexy assassin of the undead in the 1992 film Buffy The Vampire Slayer opposite Luke Perry.

i was under the impression that she did not want to do any movies. am i remembering incorrectly? was it just david boreanaz that was against any movies for angel?

My understanding was that at the moment Joss is only thinking of making made-for-TV movies of the Buffyverse, and neither SMG or DB are interested in doing those (but ASH, JM, and many others are...so Joss is confident that those made for TV movies will happen).

I think that in the above interview SMG is hoping that at some point Joss will make a film of the Buffyverse for release in theaters...and THAT is what she would be open to doing....

I understood that DB would also love to play Angel again but only if it was on the big screen.

Of course I could be wrong...but that is what I've gathered.

I think you've got it exactly right. Neither Sarah nor David want to do TV movies, but they are both open to doing a big screen version, as long as the script is good. I think Sarah has some additional hesitation because the first "Buffy" movie was so bad.

You know? This is the attitude I really resent.
It is so insulting to Joss (IMO)
If Joss is involved then OF COURSE the script will be brilliant,
and the idiots who made the 'Buffy' movie threw out most of his script and allowed the brainless actors to ad lib (the director wanted to make a farce so she abandoned the entire premise of Joss's screen play)...so that is a stupid way to judge what a future Buffy movie would or could be.

But regardless, Fox still owns the property and they want to make made-for-TV-movies...
And Mutant Enemy is still alive and well, and I understand THEY want to make-TV-movies...
and I know that a lot of the Buffyverse actors have enough respect for Joss to say 'yes' to any project from him without even seeing a script first.

and okay, I don't mean to sound so angry...fact is I think that eventually SMG & DB will learn to value the consistantly brilliant writing of BtVS & Ats, after they've made more cr@ppy forgettable flicks.

I agree that, as long as Joss is completely in charge, a new Buffy movie (tv or theatre version) would be 10,000% better than the orginal, which was screwed up beyond recognition.

As an example of how bad movies can be made good, look at the "Batman" movies. The campy Adam West version in the 60's was ridiculous. When Tim Burton's new version came out in the late 80's it completely blew away the original movie. Any new Buffy movie (as long as Joss was in control) would do the same to the 1992 version.

Okay. I know this is going to peeve some people...

I think SMG is a talentless hack. There, I've said it. I mean, Scooby Freakin' Doo?!? Twice?!? Between her and her husband -- the acting equivalent of Shaker furniture -- she has the greater talent, but that's saying exactly zip. And frankly, their Moonie-like belief system is creepier than Reavers. It's like the Stepford Wives on Prozac (c) (R) (TM)...

But to actually come out and say that she'll be picking and choosing JW's scripts to match her starpower is worse than insulting. It's banal. It's delusional. To quote Mike Tyson, "It'th ludicruth!"

In 3 years time she'll be begging for a co-cameo with Kathie Lee Gifford on "Son of the Beach" as a mother-daughter hooker team.

Of course, I could be totally wrong. In which case, I'd hate to be the sets guy on that shoot: "Hey, zoid! Getcher ass over here and make this door wider! We can't get Mizz Gellar-PrinzeJunior's head through it!"

Y'know what... I really can't see Buffy coming to the big screen. TV movies, sure, I could see that (and think SMG should jump at the chance to do one - I'm not against her acting, but she doesn't seem to be 'big' enough to be turning down good, paying jobs that help build her a fan base that may follow her later). Likewise with Boreanaz. Wanting to take a break from a character's fine and understandable, but to rule it out entirely based on the _format_ (TV movie rather than big screen) seems a bad move.

I liked SMG in Buffy, but I never really thought of her as an incredibly gifted actress. She is better than most, but she doesn't have the power to pick and choose that she seems to think she does. I mean come on! Two Scooby Doo movies? What was she thinking?

If Joss ever does a BtVS movie, she better pray that Joss let's her do it. If the commentary on the FF DVD set is any indication, SMG has not done much in the last few years to ingratiate herself w/ Joss.

She should be wary not to rely too heavily on her self perceived power.

At first she was probably thinking to demonstrate her acting range. When they started the second movie, she was probably thinking "God, what've I gotten myself into."

Zoid, it's not physically possible to hate you, you're too damn loveable.

Plus, outside of "Buffy" I have to agree with you, her acting range is the equivalent of the local Pizza Putt-Putt mini golf course... okay, that was a bit wordy, but you get the idea.

And even in BTVS, she was constantly outdone by the supporting cast around her (most especially Anthony Steward Head and the mind-blowingly talented James Marsters).

She's got the "Gosh, I'm so cute in this spotlight" smile, the "I'm upset because things went someone else's way" pout, and the "Ain't I a bad-ass in my Prada fighting gear" glare.

Basically, I think a movie could be made without her, and not really suffer all that much--focus more on the other guys.

Just my two cents.

Browncoat1, I'm more of the opinion of you. I think she was good in Buffy and Joss wrote scripts that were for her talent and range. However, she has a very small range and I can't see her doing Blanche in "Street Car Named Desire" or Lady Macbeth.

I would hope that she would always be gracious to her old boss who ensured that she got a nice little paycheck for seven years.

And as to why she does these stupid movies, it is easy to answer. It's a job. Just as we are forced to do things at work that we don't like or find creatively stimulating, we have to make a living, plain and simple.

Don't think I'm going to rush out and see "The Grudge" but would love to here what people think this weekend.

I'd have to say that I don't consider SMG a "talentless hack." She strikes me as more of a "jouneyman actress." That is, with good writing (within her range), directing, and supporting cast, she can turn in a convincing job. But she hasn't the talent horsepower to take a less optimum situation and carry it to success. The thing about her that tends to irritate me are the quotes from her that seems to indicate that SHE thinks she's got that kind of acting horsepower.

In other words, I think she's plenty talented to play Sarah Michelle Gellar. If someone writes a part with a personality like Sarah Michelle Gellar, then SMG can play her well. In my opinion, Joss perfectly crafted Buffy around SMG's personality and skill so that SMG could play that part as well as she did. I consider that a greater indication of Joss's talent than SMG's.

I agree with you for the most part, but you're missing part of the picture.

I'm sure Joss could write a great Buffy movie script (I'm willing to assume that he already did so originally). However, SMG is making the same point that Joss made about writing the Serenity movie script. To paraphrase Joss, a movie needs to be a short, closed story that's larger than life. A series is smaller and can develop over years.

She's saying that a movie of Buffy can't be like the Buffy series, so fans will be disappointed. She may be right. But where she may differ from Joss is that Joss is confident that he successfully "filmaticized" Firefly, so he could probably do it with Buffy, too.

and my point, fflying2, was that Joss is NOT going to be making a movie...
he has only talked about a made-for-TV-movie,
which SMG says she won't do.
This is not the same deal as Firefly because Fox productions is not selling their rights to to the Buffyverse...they want to produce movies for TV.
So we can just forget about SMG & DB because they have both said that they don't want to do that....

I feel it is no great loss, we have really spent plenty of time on both Buffy's & Angel's character growth and I would personally prefer to see the TV movies focus on characters who were not at well developed. Or didn't get as much screen time.

Not because SMG is a hack; altho I do consider DB to be a talentless hack who has a very limited range...I actually think SMG is a talented comedianne who can play drama very convincingly. Her work on BtVS was consistantly wonderful and they asked a LOT from her, she did a wonderful job when Buffy & Faith traded bodies (the weaker performance IMO was Eliza's...).

At any rate, I'm really hoping that all the smoke we've been hearing about (there have been a lot of rumors about the Buffyverse, or Angelverse, movies for the last few weeks) are the result of a small fire taking place somewhere... I'm hoping that at Joss' fundraising event on Sunday he is going to tell us that a made-for-TV-movie is FINALLY in the works!

I still think SMG-PJ's best bet is to start a social club with Leonard Nimoy, Wayne Rogers, Shelley Long, Ted Danson, David Caruso, David Duchovny and the entire cast of Friends. I mean, once they've gotten the idea that they're 'film stars' rattling around in their cavernous skulls, how're you gonna get them to realize that they're killing the proverbial golden egg-laying goose? Boreanaz can serve refreshments and sell cigarettes... As I said before, it's not only dumb and egotistical, it's not even original ('banal').

I cannot attest to Sarah Michelle Gellar's talent, because - *gasp!* - I never got into Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but, regarding the Scooby Doo movie comments. . .

However bad the movies may or may not be, I do not think SMG (I am intrigued by the fact that her initials are also the acronym for submachine gun) being in them indicates that she is a bad actress. I must point out that Linda Cardellini was also in them, and she is far from a bad actress.

Case in point: Freaks & Geeks, one of the best shows ever. Haverchuck for President!

Actually, there is a musical episode of Buffy...not quite broadway and it never officially made it to tv, but it exists and I have seen it...you just have to have the right resources

Though we've gotta find some way to specify between "AB = Adam (Jayne) Baldwin" and "AB = Amber (Tara) Benson." Took me a couple of lines to switch tracks between the "Buffy" clump of neurons and the "Firefly" clump.

I always took that comment as being one of Joss' trademark sarcastic remarks, and not as serious as the content reads on paper.

'Course if he *did* mean it, there is always the possibility that he was referring to Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase on Buffy/Angel) who was also on both shows for 7 years.

It was always understood that the 7 year comment was directed at the diva, SMG. The same SMG who could not show up for the BtVS wrap party. Talk about ungrateful.
