Fellow Browncoats,

Got a call from Joss Whedon the other day. Said he was given the green light on season 2. He said he was filling vacancies left in the production crew and wanted to know if I was up to the task of working on the show for 1year+
What do you think I told him? I told him that it depended on the money.

Of course all of you know that the above statment is just a gorram fantasy of mine. Joss couldn't call me on the phone. He ain't got my number. But if he did,I think it would be something in the art department or maybe props. That would be my choice or dream anyway.

So if Joss would happen to call you with a job opportunity what would it be? Or what do you feel is something you could do to help the show so that it would continue on to season 3 ?

Some samples,Staff Writting Assistant, Props,Make-up,Computer Graphics and so on.....

It could be anything that you realy think you're good at and maybe lead up to having your face next on the silver screen (or tv screen).

Joss "What! Jayne called in sick today. We need a stand in. Z put down that shovel with the cow poop in it and get over here."

I'd be okay with starting as a writers' assistant.

That's how it's done, after all: writers' assistant => assistant writer/script doctor => staff writer => lead writer => show-runner on my own series.

NUCLEARDAY, that may be a position known as "Best Boy". You may get to say things like " Gorram Inara, you sure look hot today." or "Kaylee, you still up for that body massage after work?"

Come to think of it. Thats a job I want

Or maybe the "Key Grip" job.
"OK, who's got the keys to Inaras, Kaylees and Zoeys trailers?"

Z- "I do sir. I've got a tight grip on them too. Nobodys gittin in there but me."

In which he replies "Security!! Get this rabid FF nutcase out of here."

Dayve, I'm sure there would be plenty of "Kraft" involved with your craft. " Inara, you've got a bit of cheese on your dress. Can I wipe it off "

Yes, but you will notice how I craftily called Wardrobe before FollowMal called Personal Assistant. Which means I am the one who gets to do alterations on the Tightpants.

My dream job would be writing for the show, but I can't imagine producing ~anything~ to the standard of the other writers. So I'd be a writing assistant - fetching coffee, correcting spelling, typing stuff and marvelling at the brilliance around me and learning as much as I possibly could about the creative process.

Cybersnark, that would probibly be the most interesting job opportunity and rewarding.

Expxenu, delivering coffee to the crew would certainly be a desirable job. Just make sure it doesn't have a Firefly in it and use "Serenity" coffee only. It's new and on my BLUE ROOM page.

Science adviser / technical adviser.

While I don't want FF/S to go down the Treknobabble road, I would like there to be some accurate basic science and a consistent technological level in the 'verse (which could vary from core to rim, of course).

Aside from stroking the technogeek in me, there are valid dramatic reasons for maintaining scientific consistency. For one thing, it forecloses the "wave hands and invent tech solution to this week's crisis" option. And it opens new possibilities for future directions in later seasons, such as contact with a new wave of emigres from Earth-That-Was (and maybe still is).

Terraformers on heavy planets expell all precessed atmo at high velocity westward. Light planets get it eastward. After a few centuries, centripetal acceleration compensates for high gravity/low gravity. Only drawback is, small planets get long days, & vice versa.

The breakthrough technology that allowed the immigrants to get to the new system in the first place was gravity control.

The mastery of this technology is evident in the pilot episode, when the crew return from the salvage job, floating the booty in zero-G as you'd expect. But as soon as they're aboard Serenity, at the flip of a switch the boxes go thumping to the deck.

What we didn't see is that this technology is simple and cheap. Captive gravitons can be bound to many different materials, which gives them permanently enhanced gravity (as felt by nearby objects).

To modify the gravity of a large object (say, a moon), all you need to do is lay down a layer of such particles over the whole surface of the moon. Smaller moons need a thicker coating and vice versa. Unlike "normal" gravity (which is an inverse-square phenomenon), this treatment has a higher-order falloff with distance, so the enhanced gravity can hold a dense atmosphere in a thin layer (a few kilometers thick) but has little effect on the object's orbit or tidal interactions with its neighbors.

An added benefit is that you don't have to place the "gravity dust" with care; it forms a self-leveling layer by its own interaction with the object's natural gravity. Once it's down it's not easy to get rid of -- it tends to settle into and bind with the top few meters of bedrock. Soil for agriculture can then be laid down on top of it, if it's not there already.

You can also do some odd things like creating a "heavy band" around a small moon's equator; in such a case if you walked far enough north or south you'd reach an area where the air thins out and you start getting some real bounce in your step. Eventually you'd be in vacuum and could practically jump into orbit.

Note that this technology can increase an object's gravity but not decrease it. If you want to live on a heavy planet you're going to have to do some squats and crunches!

(For spacecraft applications, a somewhat different form of the technology is used in which the effect is modulated by electromagnetic forces so it can be switched on or off at will.)

Now... want to ask me how every planet and moon in the 'verse seems to have a Southern California shirtsleeve climate, regardless of how far it is from the Sun?

You've got a better theory, but I beat you on time. ;)

To answer the weather question, you use Shake & Bake crystals. Sprinkle 'em in the upper atmo. High-albedo crystals reflect sunlight & cool your planet. Reverese the charge, and the shiny side faces down. Traps in the infrered and keeps your outward planets toasty warm.

Edit: Ooh! Ooh! You could control a charge transmitted to them from a central "weather facility" and make fine-tuning adjustments. "The crops are comin' along slow. Could we have a little more sun this season?"

Doesn't count -- yours doesn't work.

You can't significantly change gravity by spinning or unspinning a planet. You can decrease it a little at the equator by spinning it up, but to get a significant effect you'd have to have it going like a top, and it might not hold together if you did that. You'd get no effect at all at the poles.

Do the math - if the Earth magically stopped spinning, you'd weigh almost exactly the same. If that weren't true, your simple diet plan would be to move to Antarctica!

I'll buy your Shake & Bake crystals, though. I would have gone with varying the greenhouse gasses, but whatever works...

Thaaaat's why I said your theory (though it depends on 'verse physics over known) was better. You're bang-on: you could only make small-percentage adjustments using my method...but at least mine works for too-big planets. (sticks tongue out) lol

Remember, it's force x time. If you don't think expelled gas is enough to turn a planet, I'll add more terraformers, speed up the gasses and wait centuries. (sigh. critics.) 'Sides, DonCoat is right. I'd get you about .004 grams lighter n a 6G planet. Not enough. I do like that 4 minute workday, though.

Say, I'm a newbie here. How many centuries do we have? Kaylee talked about a vehicle model 8006 being the same as an 8010. Is that the year on the Earth-that-was calendar?

Great question! And great answers! I'm looking forward to working with all of you guys.

Let's see, what could I contribute? Well, the answer to that question is a little more complex than it needs to be. You seen, I have a driving creative impulse. I enjoy all the arts very much, but I'm most adept at music. My mother is a retired music teacher and I majored in that for three years in college, so I know my stuff. The problem is, and was, I'm not very good. Just adequately OK. The same is true for writing, painting, photography, sculpture, and all the other arts out there. So I have this problem: driving need ot create, no outlet. So, how is this relevant? (For the record, I'm a Gemini. I usually put absolutely no stock in that stuff, but for some reason it fits me to a T, go figure.)

That being said, I think I'd enjoy being an assistant producer. I know that's a lot of power, but I'm good at adding on ideas. I can't come up with them on my own to save my life, but I can improve things other people have come up with pretty well. I promise I won't let the power go to my head.

As one of the more 'creative' and less organized people, I can second zzetta13 there. Some of us need someone looking over our shoulders with a cat o' nine-tails to keep us on track Not to mention that another viewpoint often does wonders. (Interesting fact: The artist never 'sees' their own work the same way as the audience. That pesky human brain tends to add and superimpose stuff that isn't really there. Ask someone to look at something they drew years ago, and they'll often be suprised by what they see :)

Anyways, great thread. To add a more 'serious' job-title to my previous post, I'd love to be able to do some storyboards for Firefly. Though 'Best Boy' or 'Key Grip' has a certain appeal, maybe I could moonlight as both. (Whaddaya mean I can't do my sketches in the ladies' dressing rooms? This is where I do my best work. I find it... inspiring. Hey, who called security again? :)

NUCLEARDAY, I'd love to see some of your work.

Here is a site that I've posted some artwork on.
Mind you that there is what I consider some tasteful nudity so children should sail clear. It isn't bad stuff, I just wanted to give some caution.

Most of it's si/fi fantasy related. But there are other art works. Good or bad if you care to drop me a line and tell what you think.

Does Nathan get a fluffer, 'cause I'll do that for free. Or any of the other men, actually. Oh, what the hell, the women too.

Where are all i the unattractive chubby people? Core planets I suppose.

Though 'Best Boy' or 'Key Grip' has a certain appeal, maybe I could moonlight as both. (Whaddaya mean I can't do my sketches in the ladies' dressing rooms? This is where I do my best work. That's hilarious. I think storyboards are great. That's one problem I always had in art class, I could never draw anything with perspective. Everything looked like it was in the same spot. That would be great.

By the way, Z, I tried to look up your artwork but the link was down because too many people were looking at it. I'd say that's a good sign.
