NOT which do you like better, which is objectively a better show (then you can go for subjectivity, okay?).

A hard one? Chrisisall

Sheesh.. Thats a fact.

Firefly, to me wins out. If however I was to score both shows out of 100 BSG would be scored 90 to Fireflys 95, theres not much in it. Not many other shows would even rate on my scorecard though, BSG and Firefly are so far ahead of the game.

To me, it's all about the CHARACTERS. Production value, FX, scope of story- they all mean nothing without good characters.
FF's characters are second to none- real folk to me, all fleshed out and such. BSG has some good ones, sure, but EACH AND EVERY member of Serenity is important to me, and I can't rightly say that about BSG. I like Galactica's peeps and all, and if one died, I'd probably be quite shocked (PS, still haven't seen season 3 yet, so don't tell me if one has by now- I buy the DVD's and don't have cable), but I doubt I'd outright bawl, like I did for U-know-who.

FIREFLY forever Chrisisall

okay, I'll agree that i can watch firefly again and again, which I couldn't say about BSG but objectively BSG is the better show. it has been more successful (which is not necessarily a criterion for quality, but it can be), it didn't get cancelled and is still up and running and is going to for some more seasons I am sure. while the firefly verse is very original and interesting, firefly is a much more light-hearted show than BSG. BSG is very sinister, it deals with a lot of present-day issues like the war in iraq, religion, terrorism, abortion and many others, not always very subtly I'll admit but that's still a lot more than can be said of most scifi shows. I'm not saying that firefly doesn't deal with important societal issues too, but since the show got cancelled so quickly we'll never know what might have been. firefly could never fully develop in that sense. it's a very good show with great realistic characters and great storylines, but so is BSG. honestly, it's very difficult for me as a fan of both to make a choice, but only by a very small margin my scales are tipped in Galactica's favour. sorry, Mal.

Actually, I think you've outlined why FF is SUPERIOR to BSG:
1) FF has a sense of humour - it's not a light-hearted show but it can laugh even in terrible circumstances - that's real AND entertaining.
2) BSG is sometimes quite heavy-handed, especially when it deals with big issues. Now I'm not saying FF can't be clunky that way - Mal's little homily to Saffron about looking after your own is like being beaten to death with a soggy lettuce leaf - but FF also does this sort of thing very well. Exhibit O (as in "off the top of my head") is Book explaining to River that you don't fix the Bible, made all the more remarkable because it is the antithesis to Joss' viewpoint. (I realise he didn't actually write it.) FF deals with important issues of freedom and responsibility as well as (intentionally or otherwise) commenting on the relationship the US (the Alliance) has with the rest of the world.
3) Technically, I find FF more innovative and better executed. Joss et al made a virtue of their budgetary constraints.
4) The characters are a helluva lot easier to relate to, even when you don't share anything much with them, they have the foibles and inconsistencies of real people. (OK, you weren't the one who brought that up.)

Plus, as a cancelled series, it appeals to my perverse love of the little guy.

Hmm, am I the only one who thought the last BSG episode really sucked? They keep that up, and you may have to withdraw the question. :)

while i was a fan of the original BSG "back in the day", i haven't even bothered with this new one: saw the promos, nothing about it appealled to me. FireFly is the best, probably will always be the best, end of discussion.

Um....not the end of the discussion for me. I'm sorry that you're stuck on that '70s Star Wars rip off piece of crap and can't look past the commercials to give the new BSG a look. Maybe if you did you'd discover what the rest of us have...a show continuing what Firefly started. Real, gritty, thought-provoking, character oriented science fiction.

In my book they are either tied or BSG is right behind Firefly. Firefly is spotless and entirely without flaw. Every character, every scene, every line. Absolutely perfect. Though BSG is larger in scope and still engaging with regards to its characters they have a few moments I take objection to and there have been a few episodes that are just not up to par. I think it is without a doubt the best show on TV (and this last ep certainly continued that fine tradition) and if they can keep it up, they may very well pass Firefly in my mind. But for now, BSG has had just to many weak episodes (and by that I mean about 3 or 4 in 2 and a half seasons) compared to Firefly's perfect record.

This is a great to think about it, I agree 100%. I would much rather re-live the saga of Mal Reynolds over that of Bill Adama. That said I do enjoy BSG and I'm glad I get to see new eps every week.

BTW didn't Firefly go to the international spacestation? Haven't heard of BSG doing that!

The verse is alive in many wonderful podcasts like The Signal, FireflyTalk, Old Wounds and Severance!

BSG is quality sci-fi drama & is very good but I find its a bit slow & should have a bit more action

Firefly has the perfect mix of sci-fi,action,drama,romance,& of coarse Vera

okay, i agree that BSG has some weak episodes, but having action and cylon attacks all the time would be pretty boring too. additionally, Firefly is definitely not flawless. depending on who you ask, people will tell you that they think this or that episode is weak (usually, Safe or Heart of Gold). i still love both shows, but I think you're comparing apples to pears. BSG has had two-and-a-half seasons and a miniseries so far, so quances are higher that some episodes might not be as good as most. but I'm sure that had firefly continued in a similar fashion there would have been the odd episode (Safe and Heart of Gold not considered) that sucked or wasn't up to par.
on the whole both shows are great as they are, and maybe they shouldn't be compared, but as Firefly loses some of its magic when you watch it over and over again (I'm probably gonna be lynched for this) I'd rather go with BSG if I had to choose, simply because there's more to watch.

For me, it's not even close. BSG is a good show, but Firefly is a one of a kind gem, IMHO. I have watched the Firefly episodes over and over, there is not a single BSG episode I have ever watched again. Why? For me it's the characters and their appeal. I like the people on Serenity. There is no one on BSG that I particularly care about, plus I appreciate the humor of Firefly. There is little or no humor on BSG. The Serenity ship for me is an interesting place to be. I like BSG, but it's not nearly as entertaining, at least for me, as Firefly is.

Morbid and Creepifyin I got no problem with...

Objectively... Firefly is a better show to me, I just don't connect with the characters of the new BSG like I did with all nine of Serenity's crew(plus Serenity herself)

That's the key, I think- name a single character, not just one of our BDH's...Niska, Saphron, Early, any major character- and tell me they're not fascinating.
It's full of depth, character-wise.
That kid that died in season two of BSG, the President's aid- I don't even remember his name now...and I sure as heck didn't CRY over it.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Firefly, in my opinion, is the best television series ever created. It does not matter to me that there are only fourteen episodes, because they are imminently rewatchable. On a scale of 100, I would give it a grade of at least 105.

As for BSG, if you consider just the miniseries and the thirteen episodes of season one, I'd grade it 90 at best, but that would go down significantly when considering what we have seen since then.

Billy. I miss Billy.

He and Gaeta were the two best characters there. Fortunately Gaeta's still around, as usual running the entire fleet from behind the scenes. Gotta love the overworked, underappreciated, hypercompetent little guy.
