After nearly 8 years, I think it's about time I rebuild this site so that it'll last another decade.

Questions, comments, and bug reports regarding FFF.NET 2.0 should be posted here.

More to come.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

There's been talk of how an "ignore" feature might come in handy. Personally, I think I'd rather have to scroll past the "offensive" material, because conversations can seem a bit disjointed if they jump around too much, but others seem to want this feature...

Also, disabling the ability for anyone other than the original poster or admin/mods to change the thread titles could be handy. It's better lately, but it seems to flare up from time to time, and titles get changed to some really ridiculous - sometimes offensive - things. Occasionally by me. :) (Yes, I'm complaining about something I'm guilty of. Try not to let your heads explode. )

Other than those features, I think the current layout is great. Of course, that might be because I'm just so comfortable with it after all these years...

It's new? New code? I can't even see it! :o

Aw, I'll miss some of the quirky glitches like the thread title bug, makes the site feel more homey. But yeah, sometimes it's more trouble than it's worth.

Maybe we can invent some new bugs, glitches, or exploits to put in for fun instead. I'm trying to think of harmless, not too inconveniencing prospects with lots of potentially amusing uses. Like maybe random fonts or colours if fonts are left unspecified in a post.

I'd like it if the "include signature with my post", "notify me when someone responds to my comment", override notification" selections could be saved in a cookie or something. I don't go with the default selections so I have to change them every single time I post.

I'm one of those Mike mentioned; I'd love an "ignore" feature! And solidifying the titles would be nice, too, as people play with them and it gets irritating.

I never get "notified" at ALL, and don't even know where that feature is. Would love to, if you'd tell me where to find it.

I hope you don't change format or anything about the look of the site, Haken...it's one of the purtiest I've ever seen and I adore the little changing shots of Firefly in the upper left hand corner. I also would like to express my appreciation for people being able to put up videos and pix which show up in their post...many places don't do that, and as I'm an emoticonaholic, I especially appreciate that!

By the bye, I'm still getting nothing but threads from "General" on the left side of my screen when in a thread from anywhere else. I miss that.

Thanx again for all you do...if you need any help money-wise, PLEASE let us know, I know without a doubt we'd all kick in!

I'd like to see the feature that some other forums have where you can follow a thread, which means instead of only getting notified when someone replies specifically to YOUR post, you get a notification of any new posts in the thread at all. Except that once you've been sent an email, you don't get sent any more emails after that until you view the thread.

I've also noticed that if you aren't logged in and you 'reply with quote', once you go through the login page then the 'with quote' part is lost.

Haken - are you planning to just make minor tweaks to the existing Classic ASP codebase, or replace the site entirely based on a different technology? Microsoft doesn't even support Classic ASP any more do they?

Oooh - Good idea! My mailbox is constantly filling up with notifications of replies. That isn't a big deal, mind you, but it would be simpler if I could just set that to "On" or "Off" in my profile, and have it set the default to NOT notify me, since I'm usually checking in at least once a day to see what's going on, and to continue conversations.

My signature IS included, unless I'm in a flurry of posting activity on the same thread, at which point I'll usually click it off after the first response, and leave it off for a day or so on that thread...

On the fanfic side, I'd love to see fics get tagged as far as main character and pairings to allow searching. And possibly style (ie adventure, romance, alternate universe...) There's a place to enter some info now when submitting fics, but no way to search the rather extensive database for stories to fit one's interests or tastes.

Either way, I'm setting aside some $$ from my next paycheck to contribute to the cause. This place is so worth it! Thank you, Haken, for not just letting it go - I'd be heart-broken, even if I can't check in as much as I used to.

Oh: and I'm totally with whoever said it above - please keep the general style! I love how the site looks.

Comment 1: Thanks, Haken, for keeping up such a great site. You are the bestest.

Comment 2: I know this has been said, but I don't think it's been said enough. People, if you love this site and you appreciate all of Haken's hard work to keep it flying, please donate. There are a couple of very easy to find links right on the home page above the Taglog:

Comment 3: Haken, if you're considering add-on optiony things, it sure would be nice to be able to ignore (not view) signatures and avatars. There seems to be more and more people who love to have ginormous sigs and avs that end up taking ten times more space than any of the teeny statements they post. Kiiiiinda annoying, that.

It's overall been a great working site! I have only 1 request, really.

I'd like that you please remove the auto-resize 'feature' on Blue Sun images. Artists (and assorted image-makers, like my own-self) tend to be real fussy about seeing their images shrunk for no apparent reason. I felt sad when you suddenly introduced this new 'feature'.

Like many I love this site as it is, bugs, gremlins, trolls and all. It kinda what makes the place what it is. There may be annoyances and things that wind me up but even Serenity had bits that fell off or broke down.
But if I was too make changes from the TV series version of this site to the movie version it would be these.

1. I would change the title of Talk Story to General Discussions (of anything) and place it second on the list. General Discussions I would change to be Discussions of Firefly/Serenity related material and keep this first in the list. You could word it how you like but it may stop people posting about anything in the current General Discussions (I'm guilty of this myself as less people seem to go to Talk Story).

2. The second feature I'd add would be a search function, even a simple one that looks up keywords and/or usernames. It's really hard and long winded to find an old post by having to wade through all the others, especially if you don't remember what forum it was in.

That would be it, I think.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

As long as you don't change the basic layout of the place I'll be happy. I visit here at least twice a day, once in the morning as I'm caffeining up for the day, and again as soon as I get home. This is my favorite site and I don't ever want it to die, and I also want it to retain as much of the same flavor as when I first discovered it.

I've contributed through PayPal before and I promise I'll do so again soon. You've also benefited from some amazon.com purchases from time to time and I'll continue to do that as well.

I can't think of any other features I'd ask for. I'm used to un-checking the box for notification of replies, since I visit so often I don't need to know if a thread I'm participating in has new posts. I normally only use my signature on posts directly related to Firefly or Serenity since the phrase is specific to the show and the fandom, so I still want to have the option to use it or not depending on where I'm posting. I'm gonna use it here because the sentiment definitely applies to this situation. For anyone who doesn't know yet my sig is Mandarin for "We're Still Flying."

Hakes, were you going to stick with an ASP site, or were you going to switch to a new format? Like PHP, MySQL, something brand-new and shiny? I get the impression that PHP sites are easiest to manage nowadays. I could be wrong. But as sure as I know anything, I know this - you are the MAN for keeping this site flying as long as you have, and for being willing to carry it forward in a new version to Earth-that-was and beyond.

For this reason, among so many others, I love my adblock plus.

I adore this site as it is, for the most part. The only thing I think I'd like to see (other than some firewalls between us and the spambots) is a 'posted by' on the threadlists. Most forums have the thread author listed next to the thread title, and I think that's a good idea. Unless it would mess with the format and make it like every other forum, which I would not want.
The suggestion about saving notification settings and not having the 'with quote' part lost when one has to sign on, I also like.
Oh, maybe more built-in emotes, though I don't find it too problematic to insert my own.

Thanks for everything Haken, what a great site. I agree with other suggestions, my only addition:

I don't get any email notifications now when someone replies to one of my posts - seems like that stopped after the last attack. I would like to see that returned and expanded to getting an email note when anyone posts to a thread we've posted to and not just directly to a post - it's nice to know when others have added something in general.

Not being a visual artist myself the resizing of images in the Blue Sun Room doesn't bother me too much, but as a courtesy to those who provide such art could you please allow them to display it in the resolution they prefer?

On the other hand, could you please transfer that resizing code to images displayed in forum threads? Take the "Avatar reports" thread: Just the first image that Out2theBlack entered of Neytiri causes the entire thread to be stretched horizontally, and I have to scroll to the right, then back to the left, in order to read replies. Yes, I suppose I could change my screen resolution, but for the most part I like it the way it is.

First of all, good man Haken.

Second, I am in favour of an 'ignore' function that allows me to ignore PirateNews. But I'm not so concerned about the effort on my scrolling-finger, more the effort of having to search to find a thread that isn't his spam in the first place. His cut-and-paste threads (essentially a transplant of his propaganda website) sometimes swamp the whole RWED board, and it stifles community discussion (and the free speech of the rest of us).

Would an 'ignore' feature remove his threads from my consciousness entirely (or at least hide them away)? If so that would be grand.

First off, let me just say that version FFF.NET 2.0 will be very similar to version 1.0 in terms of look. There will be some changes because I will be using CSS DIVs to layout the site rather than HTML tables. Yeah, FFF.NET has been around long enough that many technologies and ways of doing things have changed.

As for scripting language, FFF.NET 2.0 will be in C#. And, yes, ASP, which is basically VBScript is no longer supported by anyone, including Sun Microsystems, which acquired it several years back.

Where can you see it? It's currently at http://beta.fireflyfans.net. I'll try and do a build every couple of days, which basically means that I'll add a function or page every couple of days--time in real life permitting, of course. Those of you who wishes to help me test can go ahead and provide feedback so that I can make changes accordingly. This back and forth between myself and those of you who were around at the time worked out pretty well in creating the FFF.NET you see today.

Here are some feedbacks about the requests:

IGNORE FUNCTION
Sounds reasonable enough, I'll add that in when the message board is fairly complete and stable. The only drawback I see with an ignore function is that one might ignore something that's actually okay. I think in most cases, reporting an abuse might work better.

PAGING
It's not that I can't add paging. It's just that I've noticed for sites that do have them, we see threads that are hundreds or even thousands of posts long because people just keeps posting to the same thread. Overtime we just see threads that are hundreds of pages long, which pretty much renders paging useless anyway.

In the early days of FFF.NET it was decided that without paging, the community will naturally just create new threads for topics because members would realize that a thread was too long. I think this actually worked out pretty well in terms of keeping things fresh and moving along. It's interesting to note that while I was repairing the damage caused by the spambot, I discovered that there are over 750,000 posts in the message board with over 40,000 threads. Since we're on the subject, there are about 19,000 items in the Blue Sun Room. Overall, that's a lot of content.

Anyway, more later, gotta run out for a bit.

This is already in FFF.NET 2.0. If you look at the same Avatar thread on the beta site, you'll notice that the images are reduced to a comfortable viewing size. The same will likely be true for images in The Blue Sun room along with an option to view the image in its original size.

Hm, just looking around the beta, I really miss the latest post listing. I always thought that was one of the most convenient features of the site and wished more forums had it.
Text in threadlists and the tag looks teeny to me, almost unreadable, though I know I can alter that to a certain extent myself. I think slightly larger font would be better. I also like the margin on the left of the thread that's here on version 1.0, though that's probably a function of what I'm so used to, but it is a layout that seems easier on my eyes. Having the threadlist on the right side makes my brain want to keep reading into that, if that makes any sense at all. I do like the overall layout and menu of the beta 2.0, it's more visible and accessible. I hope the top 100 discussion and community links will make an appearance as you continue building

Don't worry, it'll be there. A lot of what you see now on the beta is really rough at this point. Whatever listing you see is merely a placeholder so that I can work on the layout. Features that are missing will eventually be added in the coming weeks. It's a work in progress.

Also, keep in mind that I have to build these things, which is why there are features on this site not often found on other sites.

Yeah, I'm working on that. Something weird with the way IE is interpreting the CSS and it only happens on certain version or mode of IE. Perhaps some of you can verify this? The site seems to look fine in the latest versions of Chrome, Safari, and Firefox.

For this reason, sometimes I think doing it the old fashion way with tables is actually better.

Anyway, I'm working on it.

When one can posts items in the Blue Sun Room, messages on the message boards, and blogs. I'm squeezing every bit of spare time I have on weekends in getting it done, but it's still a lot of work.

Based on where we were 3 weeks ago, I would say that we're about half way there. Best guesstimate at this point is probably another month, give or take a week.
