Likes to mess with stuffs.

I've been on Twitter and Facebook for a while now, but one of the items on my list of things to do is make the site a bit more social network friendly, which seems to be the trendy thing to do these days.

FIREFLYFANS.NET is now on Twitter, a Browncoat list for fellow tweeps to follow, and a Twitter widget on the FFF.NET 2.0 site's main page.

If any of you care to follow, please feel free to do so. I'm fairly new to making these lists and maintaining them, so I'm 100% sure how smoothly this whole thing will go, but I do need people following to work out the kinks.

If any of you are social media savvy, comments and suggestions for making this work well are welcome.

To follow FIREFLYFANS.NET: http://twitter.com/fireflyfansnet or @FIREFLYFANSNET

To follow the FFF.NET Browncoats list: http://twitter.com/FIREFLYFANSNET/browncoats or @FIREFLYFANSNET/browncoats

There's also a Facebook fan page for FFF.NET that I've been neglecting and at some point FFF.NET 2.0 will integrate with that as well.

Is it bad that what she said made perfect sense to me?

I guess some folk might like it - call me a luddite, but I consider twitter spawn of the unholy pit, maybe it's just me.

S'ok though, just please, please, please, not one of them widget things which takes over part of your screen and all but bodily flings itself at you, I've been having to re-hack my defenseware against a lot of overlay, script and flashy-spinny garbage that all but leaps through your PC screen with it's nasty, grasping claws around your throat lately, and them widgets are about the worst, so imma maybe a little wigged by them...

LOL...this was a quickie experiment to see if it's worth the effort and perhaps expand our reach a bit more and maybe build a stronger Firefly community as a result.

If the Twitter widget becomes an issue, Plan B is for me to just query the Twitter API directly without all that javascript.

Hop on over to the beta site and see if it sets off all sorts of alarms for you.

Oh COOL, a slide-window like the Tag, so I can just snap a glance at it instead of jumping through hoops in case there *IS* anything interesting on the way in - very nice, that.

No alarm bells, and the site looks right good, I actually like both themes, the blue and the brown, but the brown is more fireflyish, I'll admit.

If I didn't think the legality would be questionable, I'd be tempted to send ya bottle of single malt, if you drink scotch, that is...

Can't be said enough, how much you rock.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I don't tweet, I don't use Facebook or MySpace or any other social networking site, but if this will help fff.net and increase the Browncoat ranks then it is a good thing.

It's not just you, Frem. I'm pretty sure social networking sites like myspace, facebook, livejournal, and twitter are a hot bed of white hat and black hat ops.

Of course, with so much bulldunk posts about "my boyfriend isn't talking to me I think he's cheating!" "what I had for lunch," and "what lunch looked like when it came back out," chances are good anyone monitoring on the other end are mostly digging through epic levels of crap. You almost feel sorry for them. Almost.

Still, risks rather not taken, y'know?

Well, yeah, there's that, theoretically they'd be fools not to exploit such an obvious hook, but in practice you can't help but laugh.

Just like they did many of the cults and their "influence" techniques mentioned elsewhere, the alphabet soup guys helped bankroll some of the original social networking sites so they could watch and take notes.

I don't consider that inherently malicious, since part of the job of many of them does involve trying to understand social psychology, and I think they're pretty far behind the curve due to inability to understand things outside their own structure though.

Other than the occasional absolute moron, like that guy in PA who got busted for trying to direct folk around the kettling attempts during the G20 fiasco, really there's less nefarious purpose to than than folks assume.

What's ever more annoying is the plethora of amateurs with the same idea, from marketing shills, to would be private eyes, nosy employers, pissed off ex's, and propagandists of all stripe, pump n dump penny stockers, you name it, and all wasting their time for the most part because contrary to the theory expressed by one poster (who also suggested using Twitter for activism, and look what it got that moron in PA, eh ?) that you can "reach" people with a cut down trim-to-fit message.

You can't - problem with Twitter especially is that you mostly ain't talking TO people, you're talkin AT them, which is a different thing, and you see this often enough in the real world that I think it's a substantial source of a lot of interpersonal communication problems and misunderstandings.

It lacks the deeper connection of an actual conversation, even one carried out in the patient fashion traditionally founded by usenet, that we engage in here - that's not to say such things are without use, I know a high volume auto dealer who uses it for updating their selection and daily specials, and that works out pretty well - but for human communication, it removes the humanity that makes such communication WORK properly.

Interesting thing, also about that auto dealer, is that it does, conversely, allow human-to-nonhuman conversation to work - while most of the bots are just marketing shills and badly done scripts, they have a pretty smart one that will answer questions regarding vehicles in inventory and it has a pretty good design behind it, it'll pull the carfax if available for you, explain trim packages in detail, quote kelly blue book values, give you an estimate of your trade-in, even direct you to some payment and insurance estimate calculators, while offering various selling points on the vehicle you're interested in, like high relative reliability or good fuel mileage...

In fact, you could say "Nate" is almost as good as a human salesman, since he's available 24-7 and will get neither impatient or offended, and for a fact he's less pushy than they are.

So it's not without use, it's just mostly used so poorly, is all.
