WISHIMAY

I saw Sing today with the kiddo, and I have to say that it should win an award... for contributing to the moral delinquency of minors everywhere.

I get it's just an animated movie, but there wasn't any part of it that wasn't teaching kids that it's okay to break laws, rules, common decency...as long as you have a dream or a goal. Everything will turn out ok as long as you apologize after rather than ask permission, and your persistent stupidity will result in making your dreams comes true. (Why not though, it works for our politicians )

Seriously, just about every character in it should be jailed or fined. The fact that it was slightly racist for using gorillas as thieves is the absolute LEAST of it's problems. The elephants were far more indicative of a black family anyway....ELEPHANTS. Think about that...

First the main character steals power from a neighbor, then water from another, refuses to pay crew, commits fraud, ignores health codes and safety codes, uses underage unpaid labor. The gorilla is part of a theft gang, the rat commits fraud and illegal gambling and mugs a person who gave him money for an act in the subway, the pig should probably be charged with child neglect for leaving 25 kids unattended, and she gets called Porky several times... If the main characters lit a bong and had an orgy I wouldn't have been surprised. One of the characters WAS voiced by Seth Mcfarlane, so that should probably tell you something.

I'm glad my kid is a teenager now, because if she was younger I would have had to leave. It probably will win awards unfortunately.

I also get I'm probably the last person on the planet to care about the morals we teach kids, but when they actually have orgies and bongs in animated movies, don't say I didn't warn you... (Wait, didn't they just make a Sausage Party movie and let kids as young as 12 see it in France???)

I don't like where this is going....

Before we talk about “Sing,” let’s talk about Satan. Remember the scene in “Broadcast News” when Albert Brooks tries to convince Holly Hunter that her handsome new crush is Lucifer? She dismisses him, but Brooks is undeterred. He argues that the most insidious thing about true evil is that it comes to you like a wolf in sheep’s clothing, that the greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist. “He’ll never do an evil thing! He will just bit by little bit lower our standards where they are important. Just coax along flash over substance.”

I’m semi-serious here. Born from the blood money earned by 20th Century Fox atrocities like “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “Horton Hears a Who!,” Illumination Entertainment has been working toward a movie this cynical and creatively bankrupt since “Ice Age” executive producer Chris Meledandri founded the company in 2007. It was always just a matter of time.

For Pixar, story is everything. For Illumination, story is a lubricant for cross-promotional opportunities. Hyperactivity, constant noise, and calculated cuteness reign supreme. They came out of the gate swinging with “Despicable Me,” but that reasonably clever comedy about an evil genius with a heart of gold would prove to be their crowning achievement.

It would also prove to be their downfall. That film’s breakout success (as well as that of its bumbling yellow Minions) steered the studio toward craven greed with reckless abandon. “The Lorax,” “Despicable Me 2,” “Minions,” “The Secret Life of Pets” — their subsequent products have enough moments of charm and visual wit that only serve to highlight the creative bankruptcy around them. The movies prove considerably less memorable than their marketing campaigns; “Minions” was conceived in a $600 million orgy of cross-promotional publicity.

As a business model, it works. While they fall well short of, say, the average gross of a Pixar film ($634 million), none of them cost more than $76 million; none have grossed less than $348 million. Meanwhile, Studio Ghibli is all but out of business, and the latest film from Laika fell short of $50 million at the domestic box office. It’s like these people are on a profitable suicide mission to lower our standards for animated filmmaking, bit by little bit.

If that is their goal, then “Sing” is the Platonic ideal of an Illumination movie. It’s a profoundly soulless piece of work that shines a light on the mediocrity they foist upon the children of the world.

I think I'll think twice about seeing any Illumination movie in the future.

While we were there, these were the previews for things this summer...

The Emoji Movie unlocks the never-before-seen secret world inside your smartphone. Hidden within the messaging app is Textopolis, a bustling city where all your favorite emojis live, hoping to be selected by the phone's user. In this world, each emoji has only one facial expression - except for Gene, an exuberant emoji who was born without a filter and is bursting with multiple expressions. Determined to become "normal" like the other emojis, Gene enlists the help of his handy best friend Hi-5 and the notorious code breaker emoji Jailbreak. Together, they embark on an epic "app-venture" through the apps on the phone, each its own wild and fun world, to find the Code that will fix Gene. But when a greater danger threatens the phone, the fate of all emojis depends on these three unlikely friends who must save their world before it's deleted forever. The Boss Baby
A suit-wearing briefcase-carrying baby pairs up with his seven-year old brother to stop the dastardly plot of the CEO of Puppy Co.

REALLY??? THIS is what we get now???? Horrifyingly stupid drivel to appease the lowest common denominator.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

Disney has been teaching kids to break the rules and disobey parents ( authority ) for ages.

Maybe not so overtly ( I've not seen SING ) , but this isn't anything new.

One of the morning show people said a few years ago that she doesn't let her kids watch Disney teen shows because they get really snippy and back talk when they do.

Guess I should be glad that we haven't had cable in a decade. I sure don't miss the fights over the remote or the incessant clicking.
