Get ready to rumble, rock and roll. Thor Ragnarok is everything a movie should be and then some.

No Spoilers Here

I'll give you the short version - It's GoTG and Avengers rolled into one. It is funny, inventive and kicks ass. First of all, at the 6 o'clock 3D showing, it was sold out (at $20 a pop) but we (my son and his friends) had those new reclining sofa chairs (and they were awesome).

Right from the opening scene you know you're in for quite a ride, and it doesn't stop until the very end. I mean it the very end, after credits roll, way after. So don't leave until the very end, the very end. But let me tell you, don't go to the bathroom, to get popcorn or anything. You will miss something because it does not stop - neither the action or the laughs. The director, Taika Waititi (from New Zealand, Maori Tribe) who makes hilarious and popular films (yeah, I've heard of him - my son, his girlfriend and I went to see "Hunt for the Wilderpeople" and it was so much fun) does a masterful job at continuing the Thor Saga, but giving it and the Marvel Universe a shot in the arm and new life.

Let me tell you something else, you think I'm exaggerating about GoTG/Avengers comparisons - just go see for yourself, there's no hesitation on my part. As a matter of fact, I think this will break box office records and may even surpass the Avengers domestic total of $623M (I know that's a bit of a stretch, but it's THAT good). Box Office Mojo reports that Friday alone Ragnarok made $46M (it made $109M last weekend overseas. I dare say that it will set records in New Zealand).
Is that the be all and end all? Does box office dominance mean that it's a good movie? Well, no, but in this case this is not so. This is a great comic book movie, perhaps the best.

Everyone in the cast is solid in this film and they all get to act as well as be playful throughout the movie. Which, for me, is a double dip of nougaty goodness - like biting into a Snickers bar. You have the usual characters Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Idris Alba as Heimdall (the gatekeeper), Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Jaime Alexander as Lady Sif (although I don't remember seeing her in the movie). We get some new additions that almost steal the movie away from the stars: first there's the unforgettable Cate Blanchett, who plays a major villain and does a great job; then there's Tessa Thompsom (the Valkyrie) she's awesome (move over Zoe Saldana); keep your eye on her.

Now here's a blast from the past: Jeff Goldblum as Grandmaster, who turns in a goofy, but fun performance. Karl Urban (whom I didn't recognize right off) as the Executioner. And a newcomer to our shores, even director Waititi gets in on the fun as the voice of a character named Korg, a warrior with an accent (hint). Everybody gets a turn at playing up the fun, I mean everybody. I won't spoil it for you, just trust me on this one. Run to the theater, spend the money any way you can, you will not be disappointed. And if you are, well, I don't know what to tell you. But fun you will have.

I'm going back in a couple of weeks to see it again, because there were a few moments that I missed. Mainly because I was laughing so much. So be prepared to miss some dialogue due to the whole theater laughing, as in the one I went to.
I'll finish up by saying, whatever you do.......have fun. I did.

"Here's the thing: @TaikaWaititi has made a modern masterpiece," Whedon tweeted. "Epic, hilarious, gorgeous, heartfelt, and hilarious. I'm SO HAPPY #hilarious."

Joss Tweet..............

No problem...Waititi made it easy for me. Now it's on to The Last Jedi.

According to Box Office Mojo Ragnarok just made $121M this weekend, surpassing even
industry estimated levels. That's domestic levels. Of course it doesn't come close to the Avengers opening weekend which grossed $207M, so it has some catching up to do if it's going to challenge their take.

The second week of The Avengers had a 50% drop off, so let's see what happens to Thor: Ragnarok. But Disney is laughing all the way to the bank, so I don't think they will care too much. Besides Thor: 'Rok cost $40M less to produce ($180M), so there's that. Director Waititi caught the essence of the Avengers with his irreverent take on the Thor saga and the overall Marvel Universe, but time will tell if it can deliver at the box office.

Thanks for the review. Thor wasn't really top of my list, but now I'll try to make it.

Avengers was 5 1/2 years ago? Time flies.
Anyway, Avengers released on 4 May, and this Thor on 3 November. Different Box Office context.

America loves a winner!

I liked it. Parts were great. Some of the tone... meh. ' Point Break ' Thor was a bit too campy for my likes. Just seemed a bit ...idk, over done ?

Select to view spoiler:

What of the Lady Sif ? Everyone of Thor's 'Warrior's Three ' fell and presumably are dining in Valhalla. Any chance she survived ? Or do we just assume she was there, but died off screen.
