I think I owe it to fff.net members sensitive to male whiteness being properly represented in the "movies," to report that white males (and only white males)
are present in this movie.

Panties and tampons for this small group will be spared. Not to worry gentlemen, it's all good!

And, for the rest of the movie-going public; ignore what I just said. F v. F is based on the true story of Ken Miles, a Brit race car driver, and Carroll Shelby, an American car designer. It is about race car driving, yes, but it's much more. It's about a friendship between two men, both striving for excellence in their field and the struggles that spring from pursuing that dream.

It is an excellent story told expertly without incurring that boring sensation that oft accompanies a story of technical professional efforts. There is a strong woman in it, so ladies don't feel left out. Hollywood hasn't gone completely mental (like some of our more sensitive dolts here in Fireflyland).

Seriously, Matt Damon and Christian Bale are two pros who deliver every time out (the script was concise and snappy in it's storytelling), although, at times, they pick a loser, not so in Ford v. Ferrari. They are great together and boy do they deliver the goods. It's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and Stir Crazy all rolled into one. Well, maybe I overdid it just a touch, but you get my meaning. The chemistry between these two is palpable.
It is a good story with solid, if not, great performances.

Once upon a time, I knew who Shelby was, the creative genius behind the Ford Mustang GT, the ultimate in muscle cars. But, frankly, I don't know anything about LeMans racing or Ken Miles. Well, after seeing this movie, I still don't know much, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. So, don't go into it thinking you need to know, they will tell you. You'll laugh, you'll grab the edge of your seat and white-knuckle it, you'll cheer and you'll shed a tear (for those of us who are human).

4 out of 5 stars.

Outside of soccer, I can't imagine a "sport" less interesting that Race Car Driving.

Didn't Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights already say whatever needed to be said already?

Wow. It's almost as if white people don't all like the same thing.

I could give two shits about cars other than getting from point A to point B. I don't like golf either, so do try not to call me a Nazi when I don't go to the Tiger Woods movie whenever Hollywood scrapes that barrel and Tin Cup just isn't doing it for everyone anymore.

I never said I needed white people in a movie to go and see it. I never said I needed white males in a movie to go and see it.

I'm tired of mindless gender/race swaps in movies for the sake of "muh diversity", I'm tired of movies projecting the agenda that males are bad and white males are the worst, and I'm tired of Hollywood elites who get paid in a year more than most of us will ever make in our lives trying to shame us into seeing their hackjob crap devoid of any artistic integrity.

Apparently everybody else is too since these movies continue to fail left and right.

You’re not very heterosexual, are you? Straight men generally don’t congratulate each other in such a fashion. Usually a high five is sufficient. But I guess you have learned something. Those “white men“ aren’t as concerned about identity politics as you. A good story is a good story regardless . That’s why I enjoyed black panther, for example. It was a solid story. Spiderman into the spider verse. Also a good story that included a diverse cast of Spiderman. Spider woman. Spider robots… . Island of dogs? Animated, yet also set in Japan. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. .. I could go on & on.

And yet, despite all I have said & all that I’ve posted, you still childishly cling to your unfounded beliefs . Keep doing yourself.

Yup.

And I should point out that I'm not saying that Ford vs. Ferrari isn't a good movie. It might very well be a great movie. It might also be trash.

I just have no interest in seeing it. I rarely watch movies these days, even though I can watch literally ANYTHING I WANT TO on KODI for free. I have to at least find the premise of a movie somewhat interesting before I even consider investing that time. Anything about race cars just doesn't make the cut. I'm not trying to insult race car drivers or fans of race car driving either. I just couldn't care less about the subject myself.

That being said, if the makers of this movie are somehow trying to "go the other way" with it and get my money by being "anti-woke" by having white male leads in a movie I otherwise couldn't care less about, they've got another thing coming. lol

Makes me wonder if Car Racing fans think the same of Hockey, Basketball, Golf, Volleyball.

To reduce confusion of those trying to follow your illogic, Shelby was about Car building, Car design, Car performance. Car performance is what has expanded the vehicle performance envelope to today's level of handling, suspension, braking, control, economy.

It doesn't sound like it is a movie abput cars. Perhaps about 2 guys. But also about engineering, the challenges of progressing. Just like that movie about critical engineering in a time crunch, Apollo 13 - it won some awards. And because of the interest in the engineering aspect, it spawned the follow up film, A Beautiful Mind - which also won some awards.
But, clearly, all of this is beyond the likes of you.

Truly...

And I'm also wondering if JSF placed some Vegas bets on how well FvF would perform, or if he's a producer for the movie.

He seems highly agitated with anyone who doesn't want to see this movie. Not Elizabeth Banks saltiness levels, but he probably could stand to shake a little bit of that sand out of his kooter.

Ok, if you go to a movie, or film, and you don't like it and you say "man that wasn't for me" I respect that. If you say I'm not interested in going to a movie or film, because you don't like the genre or the previews suck, okay I can dig it.

Despite all the negative press (which sometimes helps a movie/film) like against Alita and Joker, I went to see both for myself. I recently had a discussion with a friend who hated Joker. We're still friends, but we went at it. We argued the fine points, but we still have a ways to go before either is satisfied about our argument/opinion of what makes this film bad/great.

The way we left it off: I told him that there comes along once every few years, a film so controversial that it manages to create havoc among critics and fans alike. There's no denying Joker is one of those films. We disagreed on almost every level, even music choice. We promised to continue our discussion at a later date. To be clear, I called it a masterpiece and he called it a disaster. But I never told him he was wrong, mainly because that's
his point of view...we talked about what we felt were it's high points and low points without yelling, kicking and screaming (imagine that). I listened to his points and he listened to mine. Actually, it was a pretty healthy discussion.

He has yet to see Alita, which I practically begged him to see it with me. He told me he heard it was bad. I told him different, but the next time we meet I will bring him the DVD and he will watch it with me; then we'll see.

I finally watched Captain Marvel (saw it for free) mainly because I wanted to see for myself if it was really that bad. It was. But I get to say so because I saw it, not based on hearsay (that word does get around). Alita kicks CM's ass twelve ways from Sunday. No comparison or competition. Now I see why Disney tried to muddy the waters and badmouthed this movie throughout their apparatus (meaning their hired hands in media and reviewers). At least, that's what I heard, and it makes sense. Both CM and Alita were coming out about the same time and Alita is the superior movie (bar none) and Disney wanted no
competition whatsoever. Of course, the fact that CM was distributed throughout the country to over 3,200 theaters helps it's numbers, plus better marketing.
It's no wonder it made several hundred million (I'm not going to bother to look up the B.O. numbers, by now who cares - the movie was NOT good).

Joker was filmed in the old fashioned sense, like back in the 70s, when quality films were the rule rather than the exception. I liked it a hell of a lot more than End Game, but we're talking film (Joker) and movie (End Game),
two totally different animals.

Exactly Six. Exactly my point, but I, for some inexplicable reason, overreacted. I lost sight of my principles regarding the cinema, and for that I apologize to the both of you. Rappy, that goes for you too.

I'm a staunch believer that each person has a right to do as they please and not fall prey to bullies and malcontents when it comes to movie going and the like. But yes...

I've come to the point where I view people's opinions and even trailers are unreliable in what is shown on the big screen. My general approach to seeing a movie is simple.

Here's a story, and this is how we've chosen to tell it to you.

Now, you can say stuff like " But I don't like movies about car racing, or running drugs across the border, or 350 ft tall CG monsters fighting in the middle of major cities. "

It's almost never JUST about those things, but how those stories are told, and what goes on in between the ' good ' parts.

For me, buying a ticket is essentially me giving the movie a chance to impress me. I've liked movies I didn't think I would want to see and I've hated movies I eagerly looked forward to watching.

For example, I like the group Queen, well enough. Even saw them in concert once. And I like the actor who plays Freddie Mercury, Rami Malek. But to pay $ and sit in a theatre to watch a 2 hour movie about him or the group? Not gonna do it. I'll watch when it comes on the small screen, but that's not what I pay for when I go to watch a movie.

No worries, bud.

I've always said that I like ya, despite our differences, and your post here is another example why. I might give you the shit here or there, but that's just the way I roll. I know you do too, so I don't let it get to me when we're doing it.

I'm glad we can have these "come together" moments every once in a while to right the ship.

Yup. It's kind of my take on this movie. Apparenly I was wrong about it being about race car driving (although there is plenty of sequences that will appeal to the F&F crowd), but so what? It's going to be a fantasy movie that is so loosely based on real life events that it could be called a True Story only if it were a season of Fargo, about something that just doesn't interest me much. Damon's never done anything for me, and Bale himself isn't enough to get me to go see a movie. (I joked before about Days of Thunder, but it is possible that Cruise could have gotten me to see it... But even then, I haven't seen any of the last four Mission Impossible movies, so I doubt that very much).

But at the same time it's ludicrous to equate that to me being against progress.

I actually do find working on a car interesting, if it's my piece of shit car. I find a 10 or 20 minute video regarding fixing something on my specific car that was made by a youtuber with a cheap camera 1000 times more interesting than I do the ads for this flick.

If anybody really wants to learn some cool stuff about cars and engines, I'd recommend Project Farm on YouTube.

Have you ever wondered if an engine will run on Monster Energy or if you can lubricate it with bananas? Have you ever asked yourself if putting sugar in a gas tank really ruins an engine? He'll let you know.

And even though he's got 3/4 of a Million subscribers, he's replied to every single comment I've ever put on his videos. I have no idea where he finds the time.

LOL

Online cringe mafia is complaining that this movie is too white and too male and not gay enough.

This shit writes itself these days.

At this point, it wouldn't surprise me if the people who made the flick were paying people to write negative articles about it because it's not woke just to sell tickets because they've finally figured out that woke doesn't sell. Hate to break it to them, if that's the case, but just putting a bunch of white dudes in a movie isn't going to get me to see it either. Contrary to the shit the cringe mafia's been spewing for years, the reason people like me gave up on Hollywood isn't because movies weren't white enough and male enough and straight enough.

For the most part, I agree with your comment. My friend and I argued once about the quality of the trailers in recent years, they usually give away the best parts and have nothing left to show in the movie itself.

To me, trailers is an art form in and of itself. It takes a certain amount of skill to advertise a flick and NOT show all the best parts. But my friend and I came to a conclusion, or compromise, show a piece of the premise of the movie/film or a prologue of sorts. A good example is what Nolan did with the Dark Knight trailer, or at least, a part of their marketing strategy.

In theaters they showed a six minute clip of the opening sequence when the Joker was robbing the bank. I thought that was brilliant. He gave you a taste of what was in it, plus showed the character Joker without revealing too much,
and a bit of the theme of TDK. This is what my friend and I discussed and came to an understanding. A trailer doesn't, or better put, shouldn't give you all the best parts. But it should give you a taste. I gotta admit, I was excited to see the "Bat Cycle."

But, I agree, most trailers these days SUCKS ASS!

Choosing a movie/film, well, I too take the simple approach: the story, always the story. I sometimes follow a director, or a genre (like sci-fi, swashbuckling adventure, fantasy, sword and sorcery, etc.) although not always. Sometimes I wait until they come out on streaming or TV, and few times regret it (Cloud Atlas), but mainly I say to myself "self, do you want to see this on the big screen?" If I answer "yes" then I go see it.

It works for me. But I despise when an online critic, as such, badmouth a movie on hearsay and not on personal knowledge or viewing. That's not cool.
And, like I said, I've heard-tell of critics being paid by Disney to sabotage
the pre-release of a movie (for example: Alita Battle Angel). Plus Joker.
No need to say more on that subject, you guys know what I mean. I hate that.
But I've learned to go with my gut. Both proved to be better than the badmouth
previews.

Okay, so we all have our little picadillos. We all have our favs. This is what I'm saying, we all have our particular "cup 'o tea."

the trailer business can be tricky. I remember when Serenity trailer dropped, there was a song in it that doesn't appear in the movie. The fight scene at the Maidenhead. It really fit the scene, but didn't appear anywhere in the movie or the soundtrack.

Same thing w/ the movie Jarhead, which came out at the same time. Song in the trailer didn't make it to the soundtrack. Never saw the movie though.

Then there's Jurassic Park. A trailer scene had botanist Ellie Sadler, riding in a jeep and sticking her hand out while it was moving to grab a large leaf. Later on, she's telling Alan that this plant shouldn't be there, it's an extinct type of plant. That cut scene was removed from the trailer, because they didn't want kids pretending to be Ellie and sticking their arms out of moving cars to grab stuff. Probably a wise thing, given how some kids can be.

Now, Godzilla KOTM is a fine example. That first trailer came out in July, the previous year ? Showed fans far too much of the fight scenes, too many WOW moments, and unfortunately, the movie didn't do as well as projected. Still OK, but some say too much was revealed. So with Godzilla vs Kong, we've yet to see a trailer or even a teaser. A dated movie poster from over a year ago is all we've seen. ( I think Dec. 8th is the date many expect to see their first glimpse, in Brazil's Comicon )

There's also rumors it may be pushed back, from March to later 2020, but that's not been confirmed as of yet.

My first and still best example of a trailer being different from the movie was Spaced Invaders.

"Whoa! Who ordered the quarter-tonner? Does she come with fries?"

That was the early 90's, so I find it hard to believe that they removed it from the actual movie because of outrage. It's more likely that they realized that the movie wasn't funny and they needed to put something funny in the trailer to get people to watch it.

I guess second to that would be adding in the shot of the helicopter exploding in the iconic scene of the WH blowing up in Independence Day to the movie when too many people freaked out about it after seeing the original trailer.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

I had no idea what you were talking about so I peeked at a trailer.

What an awful pile of go-se. Seriously, that's something no one should have ever seen.

Don't do that again.

It had a certain 90's charm and wasn't the worst thing in the world that an 11 year old had ever seen. But it's not even the type of "bad" that you can recommend to friends who have never seen it.

Did the trailer you saw have the "Does she come with fries?" joke? It wasn't in all of them, and it seriously was the funniest thing that came out of that movie.

I don't think any of the trailers that I saw had the line when I directly looked for it, but one day while YouTube was on autoplay there was a video with a compilation of 80's and 90's commercials that had been put together from old VHS tapes and the line was there.

EDIT: If you ever otherwise reach the end of the internet and have absolutely nothing to do with your life, somebody uploaded the full movie to youtube 6 years ago and nobody gave a shit enough to even take it down for copyright violation.

None of the trailers I saw on YT had the part.

I found the channel that has the video I was talking about... but no way am I ever going to find it.

That alone is just the first 200 videos of 90's commercials compilations. It's somewhere in there, assuming that the commercial wasn't from 1989 anyhow...

Yes. It was Mac and Me, but without the 5 minute McDonalds commercial in the middle.

I did think it was funny that the XBox game series Destroy All Humans had you playing the main character who was a very alien-looking-alien with the voice of a Jack Nicholson wannabe doing the voice over. They must have been fans of this movie. The game though, unlike the movie, was actually really good.

How was Mac and Me any more of a commercial for McDonald’s then ET was for Reese‘s pieces? I have to ask, because I sure as hell didn’t see it.

BTW... the behind the scenes and how that movie was made is actually a lot more interesting than the movie itself.

In one of the shots from the scene above, you can see a semi truck with a GSF logo on it. The producer got funding for the movie from them, and they were the company that (I believe) did all of the shipping for McDonalds in the country. The whole movie ended up being an advertisement for McDonalds and Coke. Even the Coke advertisement which is a lot more low key than this 5 minute McDonalds commercial is way less "subtle" than the Reeses Pieces from E.T.

Kind of funny how insensitive everything was back in the 90's looking back at it from 2019. The main character was in a wheelchair. He was actually a paraplegic in real life. You almost feel bad for him as everybody is dancing around him in that shot and he's just helplessly looking around.

But that's nothing compared to this scene...

Handicapped people are HILARIOUS. Comic gold.
