Quote:Originally posted by JEWELSTAITEFAN: Well, let me try this again. First version of this got unplugged. Free Guy is an awesome movie. I find I am forced to give it 5 stars, all around, all levels and facets. I hope this makes Jodie Comer a huge megastar actress. Take you family, your date, your friends to see this movie. It sould be a blockbuster. It is by far the best film of this year, and last, the film to measure all others against for 2021. Not since Galaxy Quest have I been so entertained with whole-hearted action, adventure, full suspension of disbelief, comedy, romance, sci-fi, excitement and thrills, and inspiring, as with Free Guy. From some of the more advanced trailers, you may have deduced that there are some similarities to Edge of Tomorrow. But that is just the first 2 surface layers of this story. It goes much deeper. Although other films can compare, this one does not need as much discussion as those others, because I thin k this film explained it all quite well. I am very afraid of giving away too much, and being a spoiler like A@@hole Ebert. I will mention this comparison, but only within spoiler tags - if you want to enjoy the full experience, do not read these until after you have seen the film. Select to view spoiler:The Matrix, and to some degree, Inception. I am not certain when was the last film I saw this great. Arrival was great, but without the same level of shoot-em-up and ass-kicking scenes. Wind River was wonderful, but without the sci-fi or fantasy aspect. Edge of Tomorrow had a lot, but did not go down an extra level like Free Guy. Rogue One checked a lot of boxes, but it was heavier. Alita was great, but it was only part one of the story. Free Guy might be the film we hoped that Ready Player One, and Valerian might be. Cool cameos, including one by Alex Trebek, who passed away last fall. If you like to watch credits, good luck with this one. Credit roll lists many generic-description nobodies, but those characters all seemed to have specific usernames posted onscreen with their scenes. I wish those actors good luck with future work off this jumble. And with imdb now defunct/offline, how are folk supposed to know who these people are? Maybe Ryan is treating this like his Mint Mobile - he doesn't really want anybody to use it?

It was easy to sell him on a watch too after he saw who was in the cast. (Not just Ryan Reynolds, but Jodie Comer is probably his favorite actress after watching Thirteen and Killing Eve). It's not an entirely original concept... the idea that he's an NPC that becomes self-aware. But I'm sure the guys at Viva La Dirt League who did it years ago on YouTube won't see any kickbacks for it. They probably weren't the first to come up with that idea either, but they're the first I'd seen do a great job making it come to life. These are just 4 of 196 videos they've made for this universe dating back to May of 2016.

He just told me today that he watched some trailers for it and he was laughing so hard it almost had him in tears. Let's just say the old man's not the first person in the room to laugh at things. Was this a comedy? I mean, it's got Ryan Reynolds in it so duh, but I didn't think it was going to be that funny. Not going to watch the trailers. I like not knowing what I'm getting into when I see something.

Quote:Originally posted by 6IXSTRINGJACK: Good movie. Sadly... not a great movie, IMO. I get the feeling the old man liked it quite a bit more than I did. I feel that it had the potential for greatness. I don't know exactly what it was missing that could have made it great, but I felt that the 2nd act was less interesting than the first and it really fumbled in the final act. I probably would have focused more on the interaction with other players and not put so much emphasis on the love story. I dunno. Not a bad flick by any stretch, but not something I feel the need to see again any time soon either. Comer was quite adorable in the flick. Reynolds was charming and funny as always. I liked how the villian was probably very likely based off of Gen-X slacker extraordinaire Jack Dorsey.

Was Nobody released this year? I liked Nobody more than Free Guy. Other than that, probably nothing. So much woke shit out there we're swimming in it. I appreciated that except for a few dumb comments they mostly kept that crap out of Free Guy. It was no Edge of Tomorrow though. I think I did a better job explaining my thoughts on it with my follow up post from the day after. It was really good if you look at it that way.

My second thought was the only other movie I've seen that was released this year was The Tomorrow War, and I didn't really care for that one because everybody in it was so stupid that they deserved what they got. But then I went to the 4th page and realized that Willie's Wonderland with Nic Cage was released this year and I know I enjoyed that movie more than Free Guy even though it was intentionally terrible and everybody in the movie was stupid and got what they deserved. If those are the only 4 movies I've seen that came out in 2021, Free Guy gets the third spot. I doubt very much that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will take its place. I wonder if the Dune remake would?

Pretend that 90% of women in Hollywood don't stop getting roles other than "forgettable Mom" after they hit 30. She's 28 now. Tick tock. Obviously. Yes, she was 26 when she filmed this. I was just reading about 3 old biddy actresses who were in a TV Show called Charlie's Angels. Old Biddy Jaclyn was 32 when cast, and Farrah was already an ancient 29 when cast, and baby biddy Kate was 27 when cast for the show. Obviously, they were all superstars when they were first cast, and after being cast, they all drifted anonimously into obscurity, and nobody ever heard from them again, and the show never caught on. Farrah was already an ancient 28 when filming Logan's Run, and then 32 for Saturn 3. Maybe when Jodie gets a little older she'll be able to be in another Charlie's Angels incarnation.
