Steven Spielberg and George Lucas predict ‘massive implosion’ in film industry

George Lucas and Steven Spielberg think the film industry is heading towards a cliff. The pair behind some of the most successful franchises in movie history think that conservative programming choices and rapidly evolving distribution schemes have set the stage for a massive upheaval — and internet-based services may become the dominant medium when moviegoing as we know it crashes and burns.

Oh yeah?

SPOILER ALERT: DVDs and BluRay did not kill Hollywood. They did not even damage Hollywood's earnings at any point in time. Nor did piracy.

I don't need a history lesson from you on any of this, you dumb shit cultist.

The streaming release windows were no different from 2021 when theaters reopened until now. There's not a single difference.

Yet despite 3 years of growth and getting back to normal, and despite near-zero woke DEI content in theaters in 2024, nobody is going anymore.

That's because they can't afford to go in Joe Biden*'s economy.

It has nothing to do with early streaming release windows. It has nothing to do with piracy.

And I'm not even worried about the fact that the Democrat run media isn't going to clue their voters in on this. Everybody feels it. Everybody knows it. They don't need to be told. In fact, whenever the Legacy Media runs defense and tells everyone that its all in their head, they're just going to dig their heels in harder. The ones who aren't going to see movies this year because they can no longer afford to anymore will continue to vote with their wallet until election day is here when the real problem can be voted out.

If You Don’t See These Movies Now, You Never Will

A growing wave of movies pushes back against the logic of infinite availability.

By Sam Adams | June 13, 2024 5:52 PM

When a film slides from theaters to on-demand to streaming without a gap, there’s no particular moment at which you have to see it, which for many people means they don’t. You need only glance at your to-do list for a lesson on how easily something you can do anytime becomes something you never do. But Green’s “ephemeral cinema” is part of a growing wave of films that push back against the logic of infinite availability. These movies are possible to miss.

6ix, if you can see a movie anytime and anywhere you are, why see it at the time and place your local cinema decided for you? And why pay for the cinema when you can see the movie for free? What kind of idiot wants a local businessman to tell them to show up for an appointment to view his products for sale? That idiot would be a crowd of movie-going teenagers with nothing to do but hang out together.

I think you're looking at that wrong and asking the wrong question.

I agree about the infinite availability problem. Everything was devalued quite a bit once things went online. It started with music, but then it ended up being all digital media. I could watch pretty much any movie I'd ever want to at this very moment, even some of the most obscure pieces ever made, but I hardly watch anything now.

What IS limited now is the not-infinite window that you can go to a theater and watch the movie.

I know that YOU don't like going to the movies. I don't like going to the movies much either.

But you can't deny that even with a big screen 8k TV at home with a SONOS sound system, it's nowhere near the same experience as seeing a movie in a regular theater, let alone an IMAX.

But when you have to choose between taking your kids to the movies or feeding your kids that week, you're probably going to choose feeding your kids and waiting 2 months for the movie to stream. And everybody who is in that situation doesn't have an 8k TV with a SONOS soundbar.

You better do something about those budgets now, Hollywood. Those poor actors are going to have to downgrade their mansions when they start getting paid what they're worth.

After 25 days, it's grossed $160,620,267 worldwide on a $168 Million budget.

This for out and with how little it's grossing currently, it's a slim possibility that Furiosa doesn't even make its budget back.

This is about a $240 to $250 Million loss for Warner Bros.

$161.5 Million Worldwide now, and Bruce is predicting around $1.4 Million US this weekend.

That'll be Furiosa's last big hurrah, as WB is putting it out on streaming on Monday.

If you want to see this on the big screen and still haven't gotten around to it, I'd recommend doing so soon. It's still in 1,300+ theaters this weekend, but I think that's going to be dropping quickly.

I think it's a pretty safe bet it makes the $168 Million Production Budget back at this point, not that it means anything.

I'm bummed mostly for Anya Taylor Joy over this one. She's a great actress and a beautiful woman, but it's probably headed back to Indie flicks and TV shows for her after this flop. At least she'll still be voicing Peach in the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel I'm sure Universal is going to make. Hopefully her agent gets her a good deal on that one.

According to Google and Wikipedia, it cost $168 Million to make. That right their sets the failure in stone if it's true. It's not going to make more than $420 Million to break even. Bruce doesn't have numbers on the budget yet.

It made only $3.5 Million in previews, and his model's prediction is showing only $30 Million this weekend in the US, although he says that based off of Fury Road he thinks it could possibly make $40 Million in the US this weekend.

Less than one month after release, Pirates have perfect copies available for free. Why would you pay to see this movie? To give a child the magical movie theater experience, which is possibly the reason why Inside Out 2 is doing well at the theater. Please don't take your children to Furiosa. They will be emotionally harmed by the kidnapping scenes and you will have wasted money on Hollywood.

Made it... $168,062,000

Right now it's just $62k shy of a $252 Million loss for WB.

I'm pretty sure that between eeking out another week or two in theaters and any money Bruce finds in the international couch cushions, this one will make another $2 Million at least and put it safely in my predicted range.

Massive, massive loss here.

Fix those budgets or die.

Streaming doesn't pay the bills, so if you can't make money in the Box Office and everyone's waiting for the pirates to put them out instead of going to the theaters like Second keeps saying they are, the entire industry is going to crumble and the pirates won't have anything new to pirate anymore.

It's high time to reevaluate how you spend your money Hollywood, and the first thing on the chopping block should be the top actor's paychecks.

What needs an explanation is the question: Why does anyone continue to go to movie theaters when every movie is available for free and at home? 6ixStringJack, your explanation is that movie revenue dropped because Biden is President and Hollywood is "woke" supporting Biden. That is also Trump's explanation.

I never said anything about anybody supporting Trump or Biden* in Hollywood.

My explanation for 2023's failures was everybody tuning out of the woke bullshit. This is evidenced by the numbers and backed up by math. Disney lost nearly $2 Billion in the Box Office in 2023 with woke failure after woke failure being rejected.

Conversely, in 2024, Disney's only release to date had zero woke content in it and it will be the highest grossing movie so far in 2024.

Otherwise, the failures in Hollywood in 2024 are for different reasons. Box Office revenue is down HARD, simply because nobody can afford to go to the movies like they did before because they can't afford their groceries with the economy that Joe Biden* and Democrats are to blame for.

This has absolutely NOTHING to do with piracy or early streaming releases. Piracy of movies has been rampant since the early 2000's and high speed internet at home. And streaming windows are no different in 2024 than they were in 2023. Also, I'll point out ONCE AGAIN that Five Nights at Freddy's made $297 Million on a $20 Million budget in late 2023 DESPITE THE FACT THAT IT WAS RELEASED ON PEACOCK TO STREAM LEGALLY FOR FREE ON THE DAY THAT IT WAS RELEASED IN THEATERS.

$297 million for a movie that was available for streaming legally on day one would have put it in 10th place worldwide in 2024, behind 4 Chinese movies, Inside Out 2, Dune: Part Two, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fun Panda 4, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Everything you have to say regarding movies is easily debunked because of Math.

Stay in the RWED where there isn't Math so readily available to debunk every one your idiotic claims. You have no business here, and anything you post will be ripped to pieces with data that is readily available for anyone to verify.

Furiosa is still in 400+ theaters, so if you wanted to catch it on the big screen it's still there, but the window is running out fast.

No report yet on what it made Friday, but on Thursday it only made $100k in the US.

Congratulations, I guess, for making the production budget back this week. It cost $168 Million to make and currently has a worldwide gross of $168,751,683.

But that's about it for this one. It ended up losing around $250 Million for Warner Bros.

$171,338,772 worldwide after the weekend numbers came in. It only grossed $386k in the US this weekend.

That's the last I'll post about this movie unless I remember to put in a final update for it. Otherwise I'm just flogging a dead horse now.

I think it will still be in a very small number of theaters next week, and maybe even fewer the week after if it's still there, but nothing is going to change. This was a major loss.

172 -ish million I think its gone unless I can find an exceptionally big cinema or one that is oldy arthouse or slow with movies

I might drive around and search for this movie, I know it flopped but some cinema goers are nervous with Hollywood DEI Politics and SJW product
and people say it wasn't so bad, not the worst and it deserves to be watched in the cinema.
Extremes of politics has wrecked culture.

its a pity the DVD era has died 2007 dies more in 2009 and kind of coming to an end in 2014, this movie could have had staying power before the new era of streaming and illegal downloads.
