Wow...

Looks like it's 3rd place for the weekend behind a $10 Million low-budget movie and a $1 Million practically nil budget movie.

The so-called "movie" is really four episodes of the Mandalorian TV show. It is a wonder of marketing and promotion that Disney was able to sell tickets to a Disney+ TV show. None of the previous 24 episodes of The Mandalorian were released in theaters, but the most recent 4 were.

You can see the 4 episodes for free. Don't be so stupid and pay Disney to watch TV:

That so-called TV show cost $165 Million to produce.

It's losing to a movie that cost $10 Million and a 2nd movie that cost $1 Million.

It's a fucking Star Wars property, which would have sold over a billion dollars worth of tickets 10 years ago before Disney destroyed the franchise.

The one thing it's got going for it is the budget, but only if that's true. We've seen quite a few Disney flicks that cost far more than they admitted initially over the last 5 years.

So it "only" needs around $412 Million to break even, which is quite a low bar for a modern Disney movie to have to cross.

It's never going to hit that, but at least the losses won't be massive like Indy5 or The Marvels.

I just love watching Obsession beat it. It cost less than $1 Million to make, it came out in theaters a week before Star Wars, and it just set the record for the only movie to make more money on its 3rd weekend than its 1st weekend.

And then The Backrooms comes out and makes more than 3 times as much as Star Wars on its 2nd weekend.

Per minute, the movie and the TV show cost about the same:

Aug 21, 2020 (notice that is 6 years ago. Inflate all the numbers to get the 2026 cost.)
Disney is betting big on its upcoming Disney+ streaming service and is willing to put money where its mouth is. According to reports, the per episode cost to make The Mandalorian reaches close to $15 million, making the cost of a whole season nearly $120 million. That's similar to a major movie blockbuster.
https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/07/15/the-mandalorian-heres-how-much
-each-episode-costs-to-make

According to the California Film Commission (via Collider), The Mandalorian and Grogu had an overall production budget of just $166.4 million. It received tax credits of $21.75 million, which will have further helped. This is unusual for Disney, which has frequently struggled to keep costs under control when it comes to Star Wars.

Disney made a profit from the TV show without selling any theater tickets. If you were dumb enough to buy a movie ticket to the 2026 episodes of The Mandalorian, you are pretty damn stupid.

I don't doubt that. Disney knows how to piss away money better than anyone besides the US Government.

I think I remember hearing that Secret Invasion was something like $435 Million to film the whole season.

ETA: Nah... I must be confusing that number with something else that they did. Or maybe it was something Lord of the Rings releated over at Amazon that I'm thinking about.

Secret Invasion cost $224.3 Million.

The entire run was 223 minutes and 30 seconds long, so every minute you saw on screen cost $1 Million to make.

I think most would argue you did not see $1 Million per minute on the screen at any point in time on the show.

Oh, right...

Speaking of $1 Million, have I mentioned yet that a low-budget horror movie in its 3rd weekend outsold Star Wars by nearly $3 Million dollars. And that this no-name horror film only cost $1 Million to make?

And it wasn't only a minute long either. I'm seeing a 108 minute runtime.

hmmmmmmmm...

That's only $9,259 per minute!

Damn...

That's still $1,500 more than I spent to live last year.

ETA:

Let's see...

525,600 minutes in a year. Divide $7,500 by that...

$0.0142

That's about $0.86 per hour it costs for me to live right now.

So when I hear about a "low budget" movie costing nearly $10,000 per minute to make, I don't know what the hell is going on.

When I hear about somebody else pissing away $1 Million per minute, it kind of makes me want to set something on fire.

Big deal. There will always be another crappy movie that every teen and immature/mentally-ill adult wants to see. For example, The Blair Witch Project had an initial production budget of approximately $35,000 to $60,000. The micro-budget horror film went on to gross roughly $250 million globally at the box office. It is consistently listed as one of the scariest movies of all time.

Why are you always defending the $178 Billion Dollar corporation?

Aren't you supposed to be some sort of Communist or somethin'?

I never saw Blair Witch. It's among a huge amount of movies that I've never seen even after the price of admission for smart people became free back in the late 1990s.

I did see Paranormal Activity though. Only the first one. That was pretty fun.

I am always depressed that most Americans can look at a machine and have zero true ideas (but they have thousands of false myths) of how it works or, even worse, no real ability to learn how to fix it. Here is a simple example that you won't understand about how the profitable machine designed by Walt Disney works:

The Disney movies and TV are just advertisements for the real business of Disney, where most of its profits are made, which is the theme parks. People who actually buy a theater ticket are foolishly paying to see a two-hour-long advertisement enticing them to visit Disney parks for the Star Wars attractions.

Disney's movie and TV divisions (which include Disney+, Hulu, and traditional networks) generate more overall gross revenue than its theme parks, but the Disney Experiences segment (parks and cruises) is far more profitable, consistently generating the lion's share of the company's operating income.

A comparison of their financial footprints highlights the disparity between sales and actual profit:

Disney Experiences (Parks & Cruises)

• Revenue: Generates roughly $35 to $36 billion annually.

• Profitability: Highly lucrative, regularly driving around 70-75% of the company's total operating profit.

• Key Drivers: Record-setting results in the cruise line business and continuous price increases for tickets and resort stays.

Disney Entertainment (Movies & TV)

• Revenue: The Entertainment segment (including theatrical, content licensing, and direct-to-consumer streaming like Disney+ and Hulu) drives a larger top-line revenue—routinely exceeding $40 billion annually.

• Profitability: Significantly less profitable on an operating basis compared to parks. While streaming hit double-digit profit margins recently, the high costs of content production, marketing, and the steep decline in traditional linear TV (cable) viewer numbers continually weigh on overall segment profits.

• Key Drivers: Release of major theatrical blockbusters and subscriber growth on digital platforms.

Note: For the granular latest quarterly reports and segment splits, you can view the detailed financials directly on the The Walt Disney Company Investor Relations hub.

Stop putting out shitty ads, or you're going to lose that business too.

Disney used to put out banger ads.

Star Wars used to make over a billion per ad. Now they can't make 1/4th of that.

It's a good thing that Disney doesn't make their own toys. They can just put Hasbro and Mattel and even LEGO out of business after fucking them over with their shitty ads.

Every dime they've invested in Star Wars at their parks was wasted. They can't even get anybody to visit their billion dollar Star Wars hotel, so they already closed that and are converting it into office buildings, rather than something that will make money for them.

Disney had better have a plan beyond catering to single adult children with too much money who voted for Kamala Harris.

You're a genetic dead end. When you're all gone, so is Disney's theme park business.

Tick Tock

I am confident that Walt Disney Studios would never make anything remotely in the category of either Obsession or Backrooms. If you want to know why Disney would not touch either of these properties, download the movies:

Obsession https://uindex.org/details.php?id=103539721

Backrooms https://uindex.org/details.php?id=102656149
(The description does NOT match the movie, but it is Backrooms 2026 )

If you are the kind of person who likes these movies, please stay away from family-friendly places such as Disney World for the sake of the children at these amusement parks. Maybe you should not have children?

I know these made lots of money, but sometimes you should not do things even if it is profitable:

At least the makers of The Backrooms aren't actively trying to groom your children like Diseny does.
