I wanted to see this because of Emily Blunt, who I've adored since The Devil Wears Prada, and because my niece and her daughter (she's 10) wanted to see it too.

I liked it, mainly because I grew up with musicals (MGM and the like), but it didn't exactly Wow me. It had all the elements of a good musical - story, characters and music - but it was just okay. Although the only character that didn't have me convinced was Jack (Jack and The Beanstalk fame), otherwise it was quite entertaining. But, methinks, an idea that could have been fleshed out years ago.

A Broadway play that premiered in 1987, and won Tonys: Best Actress, Book and Best Score for the Stephen Sondheim (Lyrics) musical. Flawlessly directed by Rob Marshall (who also directed Chicago), but somehow I felt that Marshall was constricted by the play's book and lyrics. What else could he do? Unlike Chicago where his imagination could soar to great heights, in this piece, he could only go Into the Woods.

I give him credit because it was entertaining and fun. Or should i say, funny. Much funnier than I could have imagined. Little Red Riding and Prince Charming in particular. The only part that felt out of place was Johnny Depp as the Wolf. No spoilers here because we all know that story, but still, in a film meant for family viewing, it was a bit tawdry. Luckily, it was brief.

I was entertained, but it felt as though I was watching a play on film. Like Sweeney Todd, or Les Mis, but unlike that of Chicago. Now that one felt like a film story being told in fantastic form. It was every bit a film derived from a Broadway play, and not a rehash of the play itself. Into The Woods was, and to be fair I did not see the play, a re-telling of the Broadway musical. I'm not sure it worked as a movie, despite the fact I had a good time.
