Hidden Figures is a story about 3 ladies, black ladies, who made major contributions to the NASA Space program in it's early stages of development.

"Based on the unbelievably true-life stories of three of these women, known as “human computers,” we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history’s greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race, and professional lines while their brilliance and firmly cemented them into U.S. history as true American heroes."

It is a cross between "Apollo 13" and "Selma" a tight well-told story about perseverance and good old American know-how. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Jonelle Monae are all solid in their roles, but I was most impressed by Jonelle Monae as Mary Jackson, an accomplished engineer, who's personality almost stole the movie. What I also liked was how the film told it's story without "bashing" the white folks. It depicted how life was back in the 60s, but it presented it's case in an even way without going overboard and exaggerating the social injustices of the day.

But here's a very pleasant surprise, Kevin Costner was heroically terrific portraying the hard-as-nails Space Program Director Al Harrison (there is a spoiler here about this character).

Select to view spoiler:

This character was "fictional...who stands up against gender and racial bias in the corporation, though the part took some work to become so important"

And Jim Parsons did a very low-key performance that served the story, as well as Kirsten Dunst, who plays the equivalent of Nurse Ratched in the "computer" pool at the NASA facility. Was it a great film? I can't really say it knocked my socks off, but it was well told and solid throughout. A well paced story that was uplifting and informative, but always entertaining.

I give it 3 1/2 Stars out of 5.

I enjoyed it. It was just as good as I expected.
I would recommend it to those who don't need sci-fi or violence.

I am thinking that perhaps we should have a thread of excellent films of factual historical note. This would be one. As well as 12 Years a Slave, and Free State of Jones, and Hilliary's America.

I liked it, but I'm a sucker for anything related to the Space Race.
