Well, that was very good.
I had expected it to be a little bit in different direction, but it was entertaining.
If you liked Alien, The Thing (M-E Winstead or Kurt Russell version), and Gravity, you'll probably like this also.

The biggest disappointment I had

Select to view spoiler:

was that much of the stupidity was of the same type and almost as bad as GRAVITY Stupid.

I don't think I've seen a better film of this type this year yet.

I found it a little slow at the beginning (my date almost fell asleep in the first half hour). The only thing that kept me awake was Ryan Reynolds comic relief.

But yes, I thought it somewhat derivative of the Alien franchise, and Gravity and the like. It was entertaining.

As an aside: Hollywood tends to "spice" things up a bit by adding, or subtracting, things that may seem a bit boring regarding space travel and exploration. I would say that the one exception is Apollo 13.

I have begun to wonder if our definition of Sci-Fi has relevance still.

Life takes place on the Space Station MIR. This is not Science Fiction, anymore than Snakes on a Plane was because man does not fly around in planes - we do, every day. One could say Life is Sci-Fi because of another life form, like the Pod People films and Swamp Thing - but that is mostly just horror or fright film.

Gravity was in Earth orbit, and I don't recall a single thing about it that was Sci-Fi. Yet I think most people considered it in that genre.

I do know people who thought Apollo 13 was Sci-Fi. (insert "somebody on the internet is wrong" cartoon here)
