I had wanted to see it in Cinema (in Nov 2016), but did not see it available last November. I finally saw it on Redbox DVD.

Quite a cast, with Michael Shannon adding to his banner year in 2016 (Midnight Special). I did not even recognize Isla Fisher, she lost her accent, and perhaps some weight. Interesting that the fictional daughter was named after the actress playing the real adult daughter. TC's wife from Oblivion I also did not recognize in her role here. Amy Adams playing teen and a generation older versions, and Gyllenhal playing fictional current and real teenish parts. I normally really enjoy Laura Linney's work, but had not known she would be in this (or had forgotten). And the bartender from Passengers (December 2016) is also here.

I don't recall what it was that interested me about the film, what the hook was. Maybe just the stellar cast (at least familiar to me).

This is not Sci-Fi. This is not an action flick, unless you consider Merchant-Ivory type violence to be action. At times I was reminded of The Secrets in Their Eyes (2009), No Country For Old Men, Lone Star, and upon reflection, Atonement. If Out of Gas was your favorite episode, you might really like the way this story is told, or it unfolds.

At times I thought the pace was tortuously slow, but I learned that this was just a ruse. There were some scenes in current time, some in flashbacks to some different periods generally a generation in the past, and some as a fictitiously parallel set of characters. The different scene-groupings and settings seemed to have different pacings.

If you are looking for a story-driven film, and maybe an exposition of how to lay out the story, then I would recommend you check out Nocturnal Animals. I was not completely surprised by my enjoyment of it, but I was pleasantly intrigued.

I should mention, relating to her other film released November 2016 - Arrival.

If you enjoyed Amy's performance in Arrival, the nuances, the non-verbal portrayal, I am finding that I keep recalling these also in Nocturnal Animals. Very different story/styles, but her work seems comparable between these 2 films. I did not look up which one was shot before or after.

Now that I have watched Arrival again, I feel that the transitions in NA from her coming out of her reading the novel story are similar to her transition in Arrival

Select to view spoiler:

from "current" time (of the portrayed story) to her future time, with her daughter.

I suspect that there may also be a certain sound effect which accompanies this reaction on her part, but I am afraid that if I pay too much attention to it, lift the curtain of FX, I may ruin my future enjoyment of such stories, such as when I hear French Horns being overused in film. I don't want to make myself annoyed at these things in the future.
