Well, let me try this again. First version of this got unplugged.

Free Guy is an awesome movie. I find I am forced to give it 5 stars, all around, all levels and facets.
I hope this makes Jodie Comer a huge megastar actress.

Take your family, your date, your friends to see this movie. It sould be a blockbuster. It is by far the best film of this year, and last, the film to measure all others against for 2021.

Not since Galaxy Quest have I been so entertained with whole-hearted action, adventure, full suspension of disbelief, comedy, romance, sci-fi, excitement and thrills, and inspiring, as with Free Guy.

From some of the more advanced trailers, you may have deduced that there are some similarities to Edge of Tomorrow. But that is just the first 2 surface layers of this story. It goes much deeper. Although other films can compare, this one does not need as much discussion as those others, because I thin k this film explained it all quite well.

I am very afraid of giving away too much, and being a spoiler like A@@hole Ebert.

I will mention this comparison, but only within spoiler tags - if you want to enjoy the full experience, do not read these until after you have seen the film.

Select to view spoiler:

The Matrix, and to some degree, Inception.

I am not certain when was the last film I saw this great.
Arrival was great, but without the same level of shoot-em-up and ass-kicking scenes.
Wind River was wonderful, but without the sci-fi or fantasy aspect.
Edge of Tomorrow had a lot, but did not go down an extra level like Free Guy.
Rogue One checked a lot of boxes, but it was heavier.
Alita was great, but it was only part one of the story.
Free Guy might be the film we hoped that Ready Player One, and Valerian might be.

Cool cameos, including one by Alex Trebek, who passed away last fall.

If you like to watch credits, good luck with this one. Credit roll lists many generic-description nobodies, but those characters all seemed to have specific usernames posted onscreen with their scenes. I wish those actors good luck with future work off this jumble. And with imdb now defunct/offline, how are folk supposed to know who these people are? Maybe Ryan is treating this like his Mint Mobile - he doesn't really want anybody to use it?

IMDb.com still works. They got rid of the discussion boards.

You can still see show, movie and actor pages etc. etc.

Interesting.

The last several months imdb has been unavailable, and I had given up. It had an ad for an app which blocked acces to the site info.
Now I look again, and the ad has a new button, like "proceed to site" or similar.
But now the site is all changed, nothing is legible anymore. Just a fan of images, along with the first character of an actors name. Full Cast has changed or moved.

The listing for Free Guy sez Chris Evans is uncredited. However, he is credited, as himself, along with Alex Trebek. The rest of the cast listing is still a jumble.

Thanks for pointing out it was back again, albeit in mangled form.

What happened, George Soros bought it?

The new IMDB sucks, but it was never down. It must have been something wrong with your computer or your internet. I use it quite often.

I don't think it's because somebody bought it out. Welcome to the new internet where they ruin all of the good sites to make them "smart phone friendly".

If you haven't noticed this outside of IMDB yet, you will.

I'll be watching this one with the old man soon. After you mentioned it here and I looked into it a little without revealing spoilers, it sounds pretty awesome. It was easy to sell him on a watch too after he saw who was in the cast. (Not just Ryan Reynolds, but Jodie Comer is probably his favorite actress after watching Thirteen and Killing Eve).

It's not an entirely original concept... the idea that he's an NPC that becomes self-aware.

But I'm sure the guys at Viva La Dirt League who did it years ago on YouTube won't see any kickbacks for it.

They probably weren't the first to come up with that idea either, but they're the first I'd seen do a great job making it come to life.

These are just 4 of 196 videos they've made for this universe dating back to May of 2016.

Saw it again yesterday - twice.

I was surprised that the second time seemed even better than the first. I already knew everything that was going to happen, but perhaps there was more emotional involvement the second time around.
Then again, my third time. Jodie Comer is just adorable in this film.

This film has had such delay (filmed in end of spring 2019) that she has had enough time to complete another film, coming out in October. It is Last Duel, which has had trailers in front of Free Guy. I might need to suffer through another Damon/Baffleck work to watch her in it. By the time that film stopped for Covid in March 2020, the France scenes had already been completed, more than an hour of the film shot.

The first time around, I had not realized how well this would play as a repeat showing. I can easily envision another 10 watchings - so I will need to buy it when it comes available.

Not really a lot of new info discovered the second time, but it just has a lot of pull.

Is this the first time you've ever seen Comer?

I'd recommend Thirteen and Killing Eve if you haven't. Thirteen first if you don't have time to watch both.

She's a lot more than just a non-classical beauty.

The time is ticking for her though. She's already 28. Hopefully she can manage a way to show off her acting chops in a "household name" status before they stop knocking at her door with scripts.

Yeah, she started filming Free Guy when she was already 25. And then 26 when she started filming Last Duel, which was written by Matt Damon and Baffleck, and co-stars with her castmate from STAR WARS several years ago.

She is becoming quite the old biddy, as you are pointing out.

At least she was showing off her great rack back when she was young, instead of now when she is too old.

She should certainly consult you for career advice.

That's fine. Pretend that 90% of women in Hollywood don't stop getting roles other than "forgettable Mom" after they hit 30.

In early 2016 the script, hundreds of pages long, was making the rounds of Hollywood, and by late spring was voted the hottest script to land.

Obviously, these boobtoob scammers should demand royalties and payoffs from the original scriptwriters for stealing their original work.

I am willing to start listing faults, goofs. I did notice these the first time through, and no others on repeat viewings, but I just didn't want to spoiler.

Very few I found.

Select to view spoiler:

The first time Guy has a second pair of sunglasses, he leaves the scene without them in view anywhere.

Most of the players have avatars. Except for Keyes, Mouser, and Milli. At first I thought this was a continuity fail, but Keys and Mouser are entering as Admin, and leter I caught that Milli has spoofed her logon/player/ISP. So perhaps that is not a problem.

Meanwhile, I'll bet that the YouTube channel I posted has more views than Free Guy will get.

It also stands to reason that since their videos started coming out in 2016, that the day they came up with that concept predates whatever magical screenplay you pulled out of your ass for argument's sake.

You're bringing up an alleged screenplay that supposedly existed 5 years before the movie was released.

It stands to reason that if the first Epic NPC Man video came out in May of 2016 that the concept was first conceived in 2011, 5 being equal to 5 and all.

You're a dumbass. Just like I said to DT in the General thread when you posted some dumb shit when he first came back, you can agree with JSF on everything under the sun, but the first time you disagree with him you become a godless Libtard.

I finally realized that in the back of my head I already decided, that with the dearth of new films to watch, every remaining week that Free Guy is in cinema, I will go on $5 Tuesdays and watch it again. Even though the theater has been out of butter flavoring for the popcorn for 3 weeks.

This week, Free Guy is still in normal showings and also the extra superdooper deluxe-orama spiffy lounger shows.

In it's 3rd week of release, was practically Sold Out for the 12:40pm showing. The 3:00 showing was not sold out, but had more thasn 75% of seats sold.

On the 5th viewing, I did finally notice 2 things which I don't recall noticing before. Not critical, but they did wrap things together even better.

Still a great film to watch.

I don't have a sweet $5 theater anywhere around these parts. I told my brother that he should go see it at his though before they take it out for something mediocre. I'm not paying $16 to see it.

After all of your big talk demanding that DT drive a couple of hours to his nearest Sam's Club just to save a half dollar on a year's supply of coffee, you come up with this lame crap.

Something that I'll probably forget I was even interested in by the time I can watch it for free anyhow.

Let's just say the old man's not the first person in the room to laugh at things.

Was this a comedy? I mean, it's got Ryan Reynolds in it so duh, but I didn't think it was going to be that funny.

There is quite a bit of comic relief. Dun mentioned that he was laughing a lot at the gags.
Much of it is that Guy is oblivious, does not know about the real world, our slang, habits, etc. Often when somebody says something about which he cannot know the reference, he makes some weird reply. Numerous scenes do not play out the way we might expect.

Enjoy it.

Good movie.

Sadly... not a great movie, IMO.

I get the feeling the old man liked it quite a bit more than I did.

I feel that it had the potential for greatness. I don't know exactly what it was missing that could have made it great, but I felt that the 2nd act was less interesting than the first and it really fumbled in the final act. I probably would have focused more on the interaction with other players and not put so much emphasis on the love story. I dunno.

Not a bad flick by any stretch, but not something I feel the need to see again any time soon either.

Comer was quite adorable in the flick. Reynolds was charming and funny as always.

I liked how the villian was probably very likely based off of Gen-X slacker extraordinaire Jack Dorsey.

Some Day-After Thoughts...

It's a movie that my old man can watch with my step-mom. In that regard, I do have to say it struck a really good balance between sci-fi and rom-com. My old man told me yesterday after watching the trailers he told her that he thinks it's a movie that they could watch together, and she said "I don't think I could watch a movie that you and Jack like".

Then I told him that he can tell her that I didn't really like it all that much and I think it would be a perfect movie for them to watch together.

I think if I were back in my early 20's again and taking dates to movies it would be a great flick to take a girl to. It's not some terrible and corny rom-com like those dumb Hugh Grant or Katherine Heigl movies were, but it's not so far sci-fi like Oblivion or Edge of Tomorrow that it would turn off somebody like my step-mom who never watches any of the sci-fi that my old man and I enjoy.

It also did a pretty good job of dumbing any of the tech stuff down to the point where my old man found it quite enjoyable even though he hasn't played any video games since Atari was a thing. I know that I knew way more about what was going on in the first act than he ever would have, but it didn't matter. And he didn't need to know that everybody in the "real world" that was talking on YouTube were actually real-life popular YouTubers and he certainly didn't lose anything by not knowing their names.

So... Great flick to watch with your lady... as long as you're not the jealous type and don't mind that she's going to be fantasizing about Ryan Reynolds when it's happy time.

Sadly... not a great movie, IMO.

Which films newly released in cinema in 2021 were better?

I'm trying to think if I've seen any. Was Nobody released this year? I liked Nobody more than Free Guy.

Other than that, probably nothing. So much woke shit out there we're swimming in it. I appreciated that except for a few dumb comments they mostly kept that crap out of Free Guy.

It was no Edge of Tomorrow though.

I think I did a better job explaining my thoughts on it with my follow up post from the day after. It was really good if you look at it that way.

Nobody was this year. A different genre than Free Guy, and no Sci Fi to speak of.
So you consider Free Guy to be the 2nd best film of the year for 2021 so far.

Well... I looked at the first 150 releases for this year in ascending order for "popularity" on IMDB and my first thought was that I was shocked this many movies even came out this year.

My second thought was the only other movie I've seen that was released this year was The Tomorrow War, and I didn't really care for that one because everybody in it was so stupid that they deserved what they got.

But then I went to the 4th page and realized that Willie's Wonderland with Nic Cage was released this year and I know I enjoyed that movie more than Free Guy even though it was intentionally terrible and everybody in the movie was stupid and got what they deserved.

If those are the only 4 movies I've seen that came out in 2021, Free Guy gets the third spot.

I doubt very much that Ghostbusters: Afterlife will take its place.

I wonder if the Dune remake would?

I was just reading about 3 old biddy actresses who were in a TV Show called Charlie's Angels. Old Biddy Jaclyn was 32 when cast, and Farrah was already an ancient 29 when cast, and baby biddy Kate was 27 when cast for the show.
Obviously, they were all superstars when they were first cast, and after being cast, they all drifted anonimously into obscurity, and nobody ever heard from them again, and the show never caught on.
Farrah was already an ancient 28 when filming Logan's Run, and then 32 for Saturn 3.

Maybe when Jodie gets a little older she'll be able to be in another Charlie's Angels incarnation.

I could not conjure where I recognized Taika Waititi from. I finally noticed he was writer/director of JoJo Rabbit, and he played Adolf Hitler in that film.
That is where I saw him before.

Also, Free Guy has been streaming for weeks now.

First off, Jodie is cute, but she's no Farah Fawcett.

Second, when a show becomes a hit, they're not going to immediately recast their stars two years later when they hit 30 and lose the entire audience. But had the show been started in 1981 instead of 1976, none of the leads that were in it would have been the leads in the 1981 show, as they would have been passed up for younger actresses.

Fast forward 20 or 30 years, and nobody would even consider hiring near-30 year old women to play those parts and you would have seen early to mid 20 year olds playing them instead just in case the show did pop off.

Farrah was one of those rare beauties that managed to maintain her sex appeal long after most other women do. I remember her rocking magazine covers well into her late 40's and still looking amazing. Jennifer Connelly is the only other actress that comes to my mind now that managed to pull that one off, although I'm sure there's a short list of others. And unless the cosmetic surgery industry starts making some real improvements, you're not going to see many more of them in the future doing it because so many women are getting bad treatments done WAY before they should even be doing them and they end up looking like stretch Pelosi by the time they're 50.

Jodie is EXTREMELY talented. I hope she gets a lot more roles now and becomes mainstream before she hits the wall. As long as she doesn't pigeonhole herself into any one thing, she already has an impressive list of diverse roles under her belt that new audiences of hers can look back upon and appreciate just how good of an actress she is.

She could be a Meryl Streep type and be one of the lucky few who keep getting good work until she's 80 years old if she wants it. I wish her the best of luck.

All that being said, although it was likely her biggest paycheck to date, Free Guy was beneath her. She was in Thirteen and Killing Eve. There's no way anybody could see both of those and then watch her in Free Guy and not feel like her talents were wasted there. She was perfectly adequate in the part and made the most of what she was given. But you could have given that role to any of the women in Spring Breakers or Sucker Punch and it wouldn't have detracted from the movie one single bit.

And at the same time, there's not a chance any one of the women in either of those movies could have done what Jodie did in Killing Eve.

You're saying Jodie didn't get fake boobs like Farrah? Well, obviously she is washed up now, like you said.

Obviously, 24 years later, 31 year old biddy Lucy Liu or 29 year old biddy Cameron Diaz or 25 year old biddy Drew Barrymore could have never been cast as Charlie's Angels - pulling them from the depths of obscurity into the spotlight.

oh wait....

Nope. Didn't say that.

Were they fake? Didn't know that if they were. It's not like they were monstrous or anything. I wasn't even aware they were doing boob jobs in the mid-70's if they were. Probably super unsafe.

That was an existing IP. Are you really going to argue that Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore were unknown before that movie came out? Even I knew who Lucy Liu was before the movie, but back then I watched a lot of shitty movies like Shanghai Noon, and even caught some episodes of Ally McBeal back in the caveman days of channel surfing.

My old man loved it. I liked it. The 1st Act was so promising. I wish they went a different direction with it and it was more like Equalibrium/The Matrix rather than some Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts Rom-Com. I have to give it to them though, it's the most entertaining Rom-Com that I ever saw and it would have been a pleasure to see this with a girl in the theater in my 20's over every single one that I saw.

On a side note, I know you liked the Backrooms series that I posted in the other thread. Very early in this thread I posted some videos from independent creators "Viva La Dirt League" in a series called "Epic NPC Man". I know you've played video games in the past, but haven't played much new stuff. I'm kind of in that same boat too... The "newest" games I've played were on PS3/XBox 360, and only a handfull of them.

Have you played Dark Souls or Demon's Souls? If you haven't, you've probably heard about how punishingly difficult the series is. The first Dark Souls game still has a vibrant online community both in-game and in online forums like GameFaqs to this day, 11 years after its release.

That being said, Viva La Dirt League made two seasons of "Dark Souls Logic" which is just so good. They act out the part of the player avatar in the game, and are spot on with all of the trials that the new player has when first being introduced to the world.

I've been hoping for a Season 3 for a while now, but the last episode of Season 2 was so good that I'm okay if they never come back to it.

I know how much you hate YouTube, so maybe you can find it somewhere else, but I will post Season 1 and Season 2 here for you to check out. It cuts out all of the post-episode like and subscribe stuff and just jumps from one episode to the next.
