Harrison Ford’s co-star, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, brings some energy, but director James Mangold falls surprisingly short

Quote:

The fifth and final Indy film with Harrison Ford premieres across the country June 30, and expectations couldn’t be higher.

After all, this is Ford’s final time cracking the whip and wearing the iconic fedora.
Reviews have been really bad.

However, the film has been plagued by bad reviews and the expectation that it will disappoint at the box office.

Now, dozens more critic reviews have flooded in on Rotten Tomatoes and the numbers remain incredibly brutal.

As of Tuesday, the film is sitting at a horrific 57% rating after 83 reviews from critics. That’s not just bad. That’s the kind of movie that gets thrown in the trash and forgotten about as soon as it’s over.

Indiana Jones And Dial Of Destiny Defy Critics With A $140 Million Global Debut

fy-critics-with-a-140-million-global-debut/1100-6515533

Quote:

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the highly anticipated finale of the franchise, is set to hit theaters with hopes of surpassing its predecessors at the box office, despite facing the worst reviews in the series. According to analysis by Deadline, the film aims to achieve a domestic opening of $60 million to $65 million and a global debut of $140 million or more.

The performance of popcorn flicks in the post-pandemic era have shown that critical acclaim is not their sole determining factor. Despite unfavorable reviews, Jurassic World: Dominion earned $145 million in its domestic opening. Similarly, The Little Mermaid started with $118.8 million over four days. Dial of Destiny holds a 65% fresh rating, lower than previous chapters Raiders of the Lost Ark (93% in 1981), Temple of Doom (77% in 1984), Last Crusade (84% in 1989), and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (77% in 2008).

Not a single mention in the article about the $295 Million budget.

And not a mention that The Little Mermaid took a whopping 32 days to break even, at the point where they're only a week away from daily domestic takes of less than $1 Million per day.

The first three Indy movies only cost $20M, $28M and $48M to make, and that was back in the day when there wasn't a lot of box office competition and very little dropoff in interest and box office receipts for an entire month.

Despite making only $8M on its opening weekend, in the US alone, Raiders of the Lost Ark had a 564% return above the 40% rule of thumb ($225,686,079 over $40M). Worldwide it was 918% ($367,451,914 over $40M).

Previews are not promising...

4,500 theaters on Thursday night, and it only pulled in $7.2 Million.

A comparison to big name movies in the theater now (Preview vs Opening Weekend Domestic Total).

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts / P: $8.8M / OWDT: $61M (Preview Theaters: 3,100)
The Flash / P: $9.7M / OWDT: $55M (Preview Theaters: 3,400)
The Little Mermaid / P: $10.3M / OWDT: $95.5M (Preview Theaters: ?)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse / P: $17.35M / OWDT: $120.6M (Preview Theaters: 3,562)
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3 / P: $17.5M / OWDT: $118.4M (Preview Theaters: ?)

At 4,500 theaters, Indy 5 was previewed at more theaters than ANY of the above movies opened with on their opening Friday, and it didn't pull in as much money as any of them... including The Flash.

I'm interested to see what Bruce has to say about this tonight.

First day box office for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on May 23, 2008: $100,137,835

That would be $141,450,046.42 today, adjusted for inflation.

First day of Indy 5, June 30, 2023: $24,000,000

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull Production Budget: $185,000,000 ($261,322,392.16 adjusted for inflation)

Indy 5 Production Budget: $300,000,000

So it cost almost $40 Million more to make this one, adjusted for inflation, and it made a little more than 1/6th than crappy Crystal Skull made.

It was also shown in 340 more theaters than Crystal Skull was, so that was a lot of empty seats.

Spin this whatever way you'd like, media. Disney is done.

$60 Million projected.

$130 Million projected worldwide. That's only 43% of the Production Budget for its first weekend, making it tie for 20th place with AIR on the last time I updated the list.

22 Magic Mike's Last Dance / Budget: $45,000,000 / WWO: $8,000,000 / 18%

You read that right. Dungeons and Dragons, Shazam and The Little Mermaid all did better than Indy 5.

Huge loss of money for Disney here.

I'm looking forward to adding these numbers to the Disney failure thread when the actual numbers come out for the weekend and I update it.

LOL

Boy. That's the closest underestimate for opening weekend I've ever seen by a longshot. They almost embarrassed themselves there. No extra 2 to 3 Million for Indy 5's first weekend after the real numbers came in.

Can we make sure that Kathleen Kennedy never works in Hollywood again now, or would you like to lose more money first, Disney?

Nazis mess up their calculations and accidentally carry Archimedes' Dial of Destiny, along with Indy, thousands of years back to Archimedes, who has this Eureka! moment and realizes how to finish the design of his machine to predict "fissures in time". I have seen these time loop paradoxes done much better on many different flavors of Star Trek.

Even with the "5 day weekend" it looks like it only made $82 Million domestic.

Media for the most part is in full spin mode wherever it can be on this one, but some of the more reputable outlets aren't going to ruin whatever is left of their credibility trying to make this look like a win for Disney.

It's hilarious seeing headlines stating that it's number one in the US and many individual box offices when it was the only big budget release this weekend and it was up against a top 10 of older movies that were either all bombs themselves, or have been in the theater so long they're not making much money anymore.

I don't expect Insidious: The Red Door or Joy Ride to do much action this weekend, but the next Mission Impossible comes out the following weekend (2 days early, on a Wednesday, actually...), and Barbie & Oppenheimer are coming out on the 21st. Indy has very little time left to make any real amount of money to chip away at the financial disaster it's created for Disney/Lucasfilm this year.

Disney missed the opportunity to make the Nazis really scary. Instead, they come across as small-time criminals. The Nazis look foolish in the Dial of Destiny. Here is how to make the Nazis look competent and scarier: Germany has a 15-year head start over the US in making A-bombs because the time-traveling Nazis bring the technology from 1969 back to 1939. Then the Nazis nuke their way to victory in WWII. Since this is the final Indiana Jones, Disney should have got serious for a few minutes in reality, rather than another stale popcorn/bubblegum-chewing movie for dimwits.
Quote:

But Truman saw it differently; as far he was concerned, America should now use its monopoly on this new weapon as much to its advantage as it could. At the meeting, he told Oppenheimer that the country should first deal with the national situation – figure out authority and the rules of secrecy over the new weapons, that is – and then they should bother with what the international implications would be. But Oppenheimer saw it differently, telling the president that they must first define the problem internationally. Truman then asked how long it would take the Soviets to build the bomb. When Oppenheimer waffled the president leaned closer and said, “Never”. Oppenheimer did not quite know what to make of Truman’s response. Searching for words he said, in some anguish and with the drama he sometimes displayed, “Mr. President, I think I have blood on my hands.” Truman was startled, and one account has him offering Oppenheimer his handkerchief and saying, “Here, would you like to wipe it off?”. Another account has him saying, “Never mind, it’ll all come out in the wash.” An awkward silence followed, after which the two men shook hands and Truman told Oppenheimer he was hoping the physicist would help them all make sense of the new world they were in.

In reality Truman was infuriated. He later told Dean Acheson, the new Undersecretary of State, “I don’t want to see that son-of-a-bitch in this office ever again…blood on his hands dammit, he hasn’t half as much blood on his hands as I have. You just don’t go bellyaching about it.” Six months later he was still smarting from the exchange, calling Oppenheimer that “cry-baby scientist”. Truman, the autodidact country farmer from Missouri, had fundamentally misunderstood what the scientists had, especially when he mentioned his belief that the Soviets would never get the bomb: building the bomb was a question of resources, manpower and basic science. Any country with smart scientists and the will – and the Soviet Union certainly qualified – could figure it out within a few years. There was no big “secret” to keep. Citizens of the open republic of science, Oppenheimer, Bohr and their fellow scientists had understood this fundamental fact; the politicians had not. The Oppenheimer-Truman exchange, similar to the Bohr-Churchill exchange two years before, was symbolic of a continued misunderstanding between science and politics which would heat up the arms race between the two countries and, among other things, ultimately cause Oppenheimer’s downfall.

Yup. They had the chance to make Nazis look really scary, but all the woke writers and producers didn't want to make anything that they found offensive, so what they ended up making was an entire generation of young people wonder what the big deal about Nazis was anyway. (Or, at least that's what they would have done, had anybody seen Indy 5).

These people running entertainment are fucking stupid.

They had the same opportunity when they made Resident Evil on Netflix, but instead of having white supremacist Albert Wesker handed to them on a silver platter where they just had to make him embody exactly what they think of every time they see a white male to play against the woke diversity hire cast they injected everywhere else, they did a race swap and made Wesker black for no reason. Resident Evil was promptly cancelled.

I didn't even know about the movie Sound of Freedom until just now. It was released on the 4th and took 1st place for Tuesday with $14,242,063 vs Indy 5's $11,698,989, even though it was shown in just under 2,000 less theaters than Indy 5.

An Indiana Jones movie knocked out of 1st place on only its 5th day in theaters, by an indie flick from "Angel Studios" who's only other credit is some bible bouncing movie nobody ever heard of that got a 17 day run in the theaters earlier this year called "His Only Son" which only nabbed $12 Million in the box office before it was forgotten about forever.

To top it off, Sound of Freedom's budget was only a paltry $15 Million, stars Lefty shunned actor Jim Caviezel, and is about Democrat's favorite pastime when they're not cheating elections, which, of course, is grooming and trafficking children.

How embarrassing.

The Blockbuster was when fans would queue up like StarWars fanatics and go around the block to try get tickets. There were recessions in the 70s and 80s but somehow they rode it out in the 90s and 2000s and Hollywood continued with highest-grossing films, when it looked like cinema would die in 2008 with job less and bailout in came James Cameron 3-d glasses and 'Avatar', 'Jurassic Park' was a giant in the 90s then Harry Potter books became movies and got kids into the seats, when DC looked dead and bruied along came Wonder Woman and Aquaman but then Jutsice League flops. It was a 10 + Year run of constant blockbusters mugs and film and t-shirt and dvds, I think the cniema movie block buster was dying for a while, some biog Marvel scifi comicbook products kept it all running 2008 - 2018/2019 the DVD market is truly dead no big sales in T-shirts anymore, if you have not made money at the cinema its over for the movie profits.

Inexplicably, they're going to keep Indy 5 in 4,600 theaters for its second week.

Also, Bruce says that Insidious: The Red Door is going to take #1 this weekend.

His model has Sound of Freedom getting a 4th place showing, but he thinks it will take 3rd place behind Indy 5.

Though I'd love to see Sound of Freedom beat it this weekend, I will be happy seeing any movie take 1st place from Indy 5 this weekend, and hopefully into next week until Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One comes out early on the 12th. It would be hilarious watching an Indiana Jones movie with a $300 Million budget only have claim to 6 days at 1st place once the next Mission Impossible comes out.

Also doing bad overseas

you also have markets in Canada, Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Argentina, France, and India...the French market can add something like 1% to 4% of world wide sales and forget taking in 'France' for now as nobody will be going to the cinema while islamic criminals riot and start to Burn and Loot French cities...Russia was a market in the past but not anymore with War and Sanctions
Seems to be an official 'Flop'. If it was good it could claw back money overs seas but it is getting trashed overseas by older and new release like Fast X , Elemental, Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken, Sisu, John Wick 4 or more local Asian European India Chinese South Korean film. In the worldwide international sales 'Super Mario Bros' for example is beating it in some overseas theater.

Budget they admitted $250–$300+ million, Box office $150 million?

Nice job, coffee bitch Kathleen. You've pulled a hat trick.

I hope 'Barbie' makes more money than 'Indy 5' overall...that would be funny

I'm hearing that Barbie is some pretty woke trash, so I almost hope not.

It's like watching a race to the bottom.

It's a laugh either way.

If it is woke then it'll likely nose dive in it's 2nd weekend, plus 'Mission 7' will wipe out everything next week.

If Variety.com is right and the Rule of Thumb has changed from 2.0x the Production Budget to 2.5x the production budget, Indy 5 is going to need to make $750 Million to break even.

Indy 5 currently sits at $255,521,214 Worldwide, it already sits at 4th place in the US box office, and it's already only making $3 Million per day on the weekdays only 12 days after release with MI7 now in theaters, and Barbie and Oppenheimer releasing next weekend.

I met a girl last night who didn't know where she worked in the day, where she worked at night, where her school was, where her apartment was, where her parents house is that she stays at. She just goes where her phone tells her to go.
I was tempted to take away her voting card.

But i really like the new song from the Barbie movie.

Maybe I'll go see the 'Barbie' flick just so Disney doesn't get any of my $.

Have you seen Sound of Freedom? After it ws produced and completed, Fox got the distribution rights for it, and then when Disney bought Fox, they shelved it. Angel Studios had to fight and slaw and sue to get the Right to Distribute back from Disney, so not only will you not be giving Walt Gayness any of your money, but you'll be throwing in their face.

On Sunday, August 13th, on Indy 5's 45th day in the box office, Indy 5's $300 Million budget movie fell behind Sound of Freedom's $14 Million budget movie in the Domestic box office in its 41st day in theaters.

Every one of the 9 movies above it on the Domestic list for 2023 had a lower budget, but SoF is the only movie with a micro-budget to beat it.

1. The Super Mario Bros. Movie: $100 Million
2. Barbie: $145 Million
3. Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse: $100 Million
4. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 3.: $250 Million
5. The Little Mermaid: $250 Million
6. Oppenheimer: $100 Million
7. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania: $200 Million
8. John Wick: Chapter 4: $100 Million
9. Sound of Freedom: $14 Million

'Sound of Freedom' will be released over seas at the end of the month, I wonder if it will rake it a lot more?

Thanks. Two more mainstream articles that are all but confirming we're at 2.5x Rule of Thumb in 2023. Not just the article you posted here, but the article they linked to Screen Rant on the first of this month here:

https://screenrant.com/disney-movies-summer-2023-box-office-bombs-disa
ppointments
/

I'll put these in the 2023 Hollywood thread.

To note: Disney hasn't quite lost a Billion so far this year at 2.5x. I'll assume that to say so is just a little bit of lazy reporting as well as having a more impressive sounding number than reality when you round up to $1 Billion, but the actual amount of losses for Disney so far in the 2023 Box Office as of Monday Morning is exactly $785,316,465 with the 2.5x Rule of Thumb implemented.

It may very well lose $1 Billion or more after The Marvels and Wish finally release, but we won't know that until they drop. The other movies that Disney has coming out are low budget and inconsequential (although it should be noted that every low-budget flick Disney put out so far this year has lost money with the 2.5x Rule of Thumb).

There's some talk that they might push The Marvels back to 2024 though, so that would be next years losses. And what little I've heard of Wish wasn't terrible, so there is a slight chance that Disney could curb some of those losses if that movie does well.
