Girl Boss movies will fail. Comic Book Movies will fail.

There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of either in 2024, but this one fits both molds for failure.

Sorry SONY, but I'm betting on less than Morbius numbers on this one.

Really?

I guess you get what you deserve.

Probably not a great idea when comic book movies are already shitting the bed and the likelyhood that Venom 3 makes Venom 2 or even Venom 1 money is already very low despite people actually liking that property.

But Girl Power, yay!

On January 18th, BoxOfficePro predicted a $25M to $35M opening weekend for Madame Web, with $56M to $101M total for the Domestic Box office. On their February 23rd long range forecasts, those numbers remain unchanged.

On February 8th, they lowered those predictions to only $15M to $24M opening weekend, and $42M to $78M domestic box office total.

Apparently, Madame Web is getting released on Wednesday this week. I'm not sure if that means it gets Tuesday night previews or not. What it likely does mean is that it won't be getting those previews added to its opening weekend total as per usual, so when BoxOfficePro is making that prediction for only the 3-day weekend I'm not sure if they're lowering their prediction based off of the absence of your typical Thursday night preview numbers not being added to the Friday total or not either.

Tons of variables on this one.

Reviewers seem to be thrashing it right now. I haven't seen even one positive review for the movie so far. Although after reading several of them I started to get to thinking that it could possibly end up being a fan favorite for being the "The Room" of the franchise.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Room

This feeling was kind of locked in by the time I read this morning's review from DiscussingFilm.com.

It’s not a good film, but will it be a good time when you watch it with your friends? That answer could be a hard yes.

So I guess the question here is will it be something that a bunch of teens and young adults go to see ironically while it's still in theaters or, if it ever happens at all, will its "so bad it's good" cult-movie status happen long after the movie is out of theaters.

I'm not going to pretend to know what the tiktok consuming generations think about anything or try to predict their behavior. I suspect this will be a very hard fail for Sony and not live up even to BoxOfficePro's recently lowered predictions, but maybe people desperate for a few laughs in 2024 go out in force to see this one.

That's rough...

I heard Rotten Tomatoes has a 17% critic score right now.

The critics are hating on this movie so hard that I'm starting to think it's actually a good movie.

OOOffffffff....

It gets even worse for The Madame....

Box Office Pro's 6 DAY prediction is now $18M-$28M. So even with the early Valentine's Day release and the benefit of Washington's Birthday on Monday, the previous predictions from February 8th that said nothing about the 6-day and just referred to it as opening weekend were $7 Million higher than they are today.

Sony has one saving throw here, however...

Somehow, this movie only cost $80 Million to make. I have heard jokes that it's a super hero movie without a super hero though, and that the costume is only worn once, late into the film. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this movie doesn't have a lot of CGI in it. With how bad CGI has been lately with rare exception, that's probably another point in its favor.

This thing still has to make $200 Million to break even though. Morbius only made $162 Million on a $75 Million budget in 2022, and this one is tracking much worse and seems to be hated a lot more, so I'm thinking that Blue Beetle numbers on this should be considered a huge win for Sony right now.

My guess is it makes less than $100 Million worldwide.

This could be the biggest superhero flop since 2004's Catwoman, which made $82 Million on a $100 Million budget.

Can we just enjoy Deadpool 3 this year and kill off the Comic Book genre for 20 years or so after 2024?

I never bothered watching Deadpool 2, but if Deadpool 3 hasn't been PG-ified and wokeified to hell by Disney, I think it would be rather fitting to watch Hugh Jackman play the character that pretty much gave the genre it's first serious start in the last Superhero movie until sometime in the mid 2040s.

Surely, something to look forward to, assuming that we haven't nuked the planet into a radioactive wasteland by then.

Recent releases based on characters from Marvel and DC Comics (see: "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania," "The Marvels," "Black Adam," and "Aquaman 2") have failed to strike the box office gold or public approval that their predecessors did.

After years of hitting the gas pedal and never letting up, both comic conglomerates are taking a hint and rethinking their strategies after a string of failures.

Marvel is reprioritizing quality over quantity; "Deadpool 3" is the studio's only MCU film scheduled for release this year. Meanwhile, writer-director James Gunn and Peter Safran are deep in the trenches rebooting the DC Extended Universe since taking over as the heads of Warner Bros. Discovery's DC Studios in 2022.

Yup.

The Fatigue wasn't natural though. You forced it.

If you kept making entertaining movies with likable characters and reasonably coherent plots and didn't shove your agenda in them every chance you got, you could have easily gotten another 10 years of huge box office returns. But you kept pushing that envelope that nobody in the audience wanted and having your media calling everyone who wasn't buying in a racist or a sexist or whateverphobes and now the genre is dead.

Good riddance.

Don't bother trying to resurrect it after Deadpool 3. That should be the sendoff of the cape movies until the mid 2040's long after the inescapable woke agenda of the mid 20-teens to the mid 2020's is nothing more than a comical footnote in the history books.

His 5-day weekend (Wednesday-Sunday) is $25 Million.

If this only manages to make $25 Million in the US at the EOD on Sunday, it's not coming close to $100 Million worldwide.

Either way, next weekend this movie is lucky if it grosses more than $7 Million, and I can't imagine that there is any international audience for this movie at all.

Other than checking boxes, I can't imagine why they picked S.J. Clarkson to direct Madame Web. She has one movie directing credit to her name... Madam Web.

Aside from some steady work directing 37 episodes some British show called "Doctors" in the early 2000s, which has somehow had a 24 year long run with only a 4.6 rating on IMDB (compared to Firefly's 9.0 rating), it looks like her only directing credits over 20 years are 1 or 2 episode stints on various TV shows.

Most of them I've never heard of, but some of them not only have I heard of, but I've even enjoyed. She did an episode of Dexter on Season 4 and two on Season 6, both were after the show had peaked. She did two episodes of Heroes on Season 4, LONG after that show had peaked. She did an episode of House in the back-half of its run, and even the bad episodes of House weren't really that bad.

To my surprise, she also worked on Jessica Jones. The first season of that show was, in my opinion, the best comic book TV show created. She directed the first two episodes of the 1st season. Granted, on a show that was ranked pretty much universally high for its first season, one of her episodes was tied with the other worst rated episode of the season, and her second episode had the 2nd to lowest rating above them.

Still... they couldn't have been half bad. It's been a LONG time since I saw that show, but no episodes of that first season stick out in my mind as being particularly bad compared to the rest.

But Jessica Jones' first season cost $40 Million. That's a little more than $3 Million per episode.

Even giving inflation from 2015 to now, that's still less than $4 million per episode she directed, compared to $80 Million for Madame Web. (And some now even speculate the actual cost of Madame Web was actually $100 to $120 Million)

I don't even blame her. Take the money and run.

Who thought it would be a good idea to put this inexperienced TV Show director in charge of an $80 Million movie? Who thought it would be a good idea to have her direct a movie that was written by the same people who wrote Morbius? Two of the writers wrote Morbius and worked on a small handful of TV shows together. The third wasn't involved in Morbius and didn't even have a movie writing credit. She didn't ever write anything before. She was the producer on a small handful of TV shows. But if you look at the list of TV Shows she's produced, she was clearly hand picked by Clarkson to write for Morbius since they both worked on "Life on Mars" back in 2006/2007 and just recently in "Anatomy of a Scandal" in 2022.

Who made these choices? They are the ones that need to be fired.

I mean, yeah. Don't ever hire this director or these writers again either, but the ones that hired them in the first place are the real problem here.

Men's Health did an article that was supposedly going to answer whether or not Madame Web was going to get a sequel. I found this by just searching "Madame Web" in quotes on Google and limiting the search to the last 24 hours. I do this with a lot of movies that I'm putting any focus on.

So when I saw a Men's Health article at the top of the current day's list, my first question was "what the hell is Men's Health even writing about this movie for?" It's been many, many, many years since I picked up a Men's Health magazine... more than half a lifetime ago by now I'm sure... But articles on movies weren't part of it back then.

But then I clicked on the link and saw the full headline and it all became clear...

"What Are Madame Web's Chances of a Sequel? Like, Seriously?"

Oh. He's a gay writer. Got it.

"How dare you!", I hear the snowflakes scream...

Quote:

Philip Ellis is News Editor at Men's Health, covering fitness, pop culture, sex and relationships, and LGBTQ+ issues. His work has appeared in GQ, Teen Vogue, Man Repeller and MTV, and he is the author of Love & Other Scams.

There you go.

That out of the way, the sub-title of the article reads:

We borrowed Dakota Johnson's powers and peeked into the future of Sony's newest Spidey spinoff.

And after explaining what the movie is about, we get this answer...

https://www.menshealth.com/entertainment/a46836089/madame-web-sequel/

Quote:

Will there be a Madame Web 2?

No sequel has been officially greenlit yet, although Dakota Johnson has stated in interviews that she would "definitely" return if she was asked back. However, the film has had something of a mixed reception, with critics panning its uneven tone and at-times bizarre acting choices, and some viewers loving it for all those things, as it hearkens back to the less self-serious comic book movies of the time period in which it is set. Still, reviews aside, if the box office figures say differently, a sequel is not out of the question.

Sony is continuing to build out its series of connected, Spider-Man adjacent movies, with Kraven the Hunter and a third Venom installment both scheduled to be released later this year. And Madame Web director S.J. Clarkson has hinted that the three young Spider-Women depicted in the movie will go on to have further on-screen adventures, although whether that is in a Madame Web 2 or their own spinoff movie remains

So I'm left confused here. Are you making a statement that the protagonists' powers are utter bullshit? You didn't answer anything.

Here's a little tip. Fortune telling and seeing the future are not real things that are possible in the real world. The conmen and conwomen who make money telling gullible people what their future holds is possible because these conpeople are exceedingly good at reading their clients and noticing all the little things happening around them in order to give them the best chance at making accurate predictions.

You couldn't even be bothered to do that.

Madame Web does not have a "mixed reception". It currently holds a 13% critic rating and 54% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 3.8/10 on IMDB and a 27/100 on Metacritic.

This is the lowest ratings for any Sony comic book property in history, including Morbius. This is close to the lowest ratings for any comic book movie ever made.

Also, the box office numbers do not and will not "say differently". We've watched the long-range predictions for this movie's success drop for months, and even those were higher than what is actually going to happen after this weekend. If Sony only loses $100 Million on this movie, it should be considered a huge win.

And Amazon just announced it fired the entire writer's room for a TV Show spinoff it had planned....

Amazon reportedly scraps writers room for Spider-Man TV spin-off Silk

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/amazon-reportedly-scraps-writers-r
oom-184700600.html

So here's my Spider-Person clairvoyant powers at work, Philip...

No. There will be no Madame Web sequel.

They look like prostitutes, I don't think you can blame Democrats for this, the whole Hollywood thing has been in decline for years, the comicbook superohero thing got money back for a while but it was an artificial bubble like 'dot com' before the crash

That idea of 'Glam' from Hollywood is gone, I say the Will Smith Slap is when that market dies, it the point when everyone knew or some part of them knew it was over

Yup. They do look like prostitutes on the red carpet. That makes sense, because they're selling their assets to get cast in another movie.

I think you missed the point I'm trying to make.

The woke DEI crowd is doing everything short of putting women with bodies like that into burkas or potato sacks in their movies, just like they're desexualizing women in video games and comic books to the point that they're androgynous.

But the women themselves know what they need to wear on the red carpet to get cast in more roles when they're not under the orders of the frumpy women given the directing jobs to look as male as possible.

Did you see Kristen Stewart's recent Rolling Stone cover?

It looks like you'd have to shower the AIDS off yourself in a hurry if you accidentally bumped into her.

Believe it or not, that actually is still technically a female.

That's somehow the raunchiest Rolling Stone cover I've ever seen while being the gayest shit I've ever seen at the same time.

Madame Web's international numbers surprised me. I had figured it would gross only $12 to $15 Million internationally.

Official numbers aren't in for the weekend yet, but it's projected to have grossed $23.355 Million in the US and $25.7 Million internationally. According to Bruce, the 5-day weekend was at play globally, and his international tab with openings on the 14th and 15th verify that.

On average on the international numbers, the money made by the end of the 2nd weekend comes very close to the money made by the end of the 1st weekend, but that's because you're comparing the first 3 opening days to the following 7 days. But now we're comparing the first 5 opening days to the following 7 days, so it will be less than that.

Numbers here in the US don't usually follow that model, but it will still be a 5 to 7 comparison, rather than the normal 3 to 7 comparison that give the movie the bonus 4th day for preview Thursday which none of the new movies get this weekend.

Unless it drops like a stone everywhere now, which there is a very good chance of happening with negative word of mouth, it's probably going to break $100 Million worldwide.

My guess, barring something crazy like a massive -80%+ drop, is that it's somewhere around $75-$80 Million worldwide by the end of next weekend.

Dune 2 comes out after that, and with the full weekly drops in play after the 2nd weekend performance it will slow to a crawl after that. But with only in the area of $29 to $25 Million left to go, it would probably hit that $100 Million fairly easily if it gets 7 or 8 weeks in the theater before its yanked.

Yanno... Everybody is celebrating Bob Marley: One Love and its trouncing of Madame Web this weekend, but honestly, $75 Million worldwide on a 5-day weekend when it had a $70 Million budget isn't exactly great shakes either. When looking at the performance of all movies in 2023 in the top 100, if a movie doesn't gross its production budget on a normal 3-day weekend the chances that it breaks even is very low, and it just barely made its budget back with a 5-day weekend.

It didn't do as well a single day this weekend as it did on Valentine's Day to boot. 18.6% of that gross so far was on a Wednesday that most movies don't benefit from in their first weekend.

Why the hell did this cost so much to make?

It's only got a 41% critics score, but it does have a 93% audience score on RT. Normally I would suspect that this would mean it has a much better chance of breaking even, but we're talking about a biopic on a long dead musician. My guess is that this movie was very much front-loaded. It will probably do pretty well the 2nd weekend since the box office this year has sucked so far, but Dune 2 is coming out after that.

It's a coinflip if this doesn't lose money for Paramount. After holiday-Monday's $5 million, it still needs $95 Million to break even.

Now that the 6-Day Hollywood Weekend and Cheap Seat Tuesday are over, we get to see how Madame Web is really going to do.

Wednesday, Day 8, saw a US gross of $861,175.

That's an 86% drop from opening night.

Let's do a little comparison, shall we?

2023 Superhero Movies:

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 took 39 days to go sub-million.
Final Worldwide Gross: $845.5 Million

https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Vol-3-(2023)
#tab=box-office

The Flash took 20 days to go sub-million.
Final Worldwide Gross: $266.5 Million

https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Flash-The#tab=box-office

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania took 18 days to go sub-million.
Final Worldwide Gross: $463.6 Million

The Marvels took 18 days to go sub-million.
Final Worldwide Gross: $199.7 Million.

https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Marvels-The-(2023)#tab=box-office

Shazam II took 11 days to go sub-million.
Final Worldwide Gross: $132.3 Million.

ox-office

Blue Beetle took 11 days to go sub-million.
Final Worldwide Gross: $128.7 Million.

https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Blue-Beetle-(2023)#tab=box-office

The other Sony Marvel Disaster:

Morbius took 11 days to go sub-million.
Final Worldwide Gross: $162.7 Million.

Let's be VERY clear here...

The only reason that Madame Web didn't hit Sub-Million on Day 4 is because it started 2 days early last week and Monday was a federal holiday.

This is an absolute embarrassment for the Sony Marvel Universe.

Unless it somehow still manages to get the international help it needs, I'm now thinking that $100 Million is out of the question for Madame Web.

That is absolutely hilarious. Seriously... Thanks for pointing that out. Nearly two months into 2024 and I hadn't even pulled up the Worldwide Box Office list for this year yet.

To be fair to Hollywood, they usually tend to dump their crap this time of year and also when summer ends and the kids go back to school. It probably should have been a red flag seeing Argylle get a February release.

I'm kind of doubting that Dune Part 2 is going to end China's dominance on the charts so far this year too. Part one only made $435 Million worldwide. Granted, it was during Covidmania, but I still don't see it doing much better than that.

And YOLO was released only 13 days ago and already made $401 Million in China alone. You can't see any real information about the money beyond that, but I'd imagine it's got a lot of gas left in the tank and probably makes more than $600 Million in China by the time it's done.

I can't believe The Beekeeper is the best we've got so far this year.

ETA: I could possibly be wrong about Dune Part 2's chances...

BoxOfficePro gives a prediction of $164 to $213 Million for Dune Part 2 in the US.

https://www.boxofficepro.com/long-range-box-office-forecast-ghostbuste
rs-frozen-empire
/

And Dune Part 1 only made 25.3% of its money in the US.

https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Dune-(2020)#tab=summary

If it is good and it makes over $200 Million in the US, it could possibly gross somewhere in the area of $800 Million.

Maybe.

That's betting on a lot of "What Ifs" though. With only $110 Million made in the US on part one, a $200 Million plus showing here would really have to mean that a lot of people have started going back to the theaters after the lockdowns.

And I don't even know what the difference, if any, there is in international appetite between late October of 2021 and now.

Chinese movies are the best movies in the world, 6ix! If you learn Mandarin you will never need to watch another woke Hollywood movie and never read English subtitles ever again. Bonus, the Chinese dialogue in Firefly will be comprehensible and you will laugh at Jewel Staite's and Nathan Fillion's weird Canadian accent when speaking Chinese in Firefly.

I got a good laugh out of seeing that Top 20 list right now though. I might have missed that if you didn't point it out.

I love the name of the South Korean flick in the 20th spot. Alienoid: The Return to the Future. I'd watch a dub of that.

Bruce says Madame Web is going to gross $6.59 Million this weekend for a 57% drop.

I call bullshit.

The Marvels fell 74% on the 2nd weekend. Granted, The Marvels grossed as much on its 2nd weekend as Madame Web did in its first weekend, so it doesn't need to do a whole lot of business not to fall as far. The Marvels fell 50% in its 3rd weekend. I'm going to split the difference and call it a 62% drop for Madame Web's second weekend, and say it doesn't clear $6 Million.

Right now, Spider-Man clairvoyant Madame Web is showing a -64% second frame drop (which is bad though not as atrocious as Marvels -78% second weekend freefall or Sony/Marvel’s Morbius‘ -74%) with an estimated $5.56M in 4th place at 4,013 theaters after a $1.5M Friday. She’ll stand at $35M by Sunday. Still, both Marvels and Morbius look like crowdpleasers next to Madame Web respectively at $84.5M and $73.8M domestic finals.

Yup. $5.56 Million estimated for Deadline.

I'm surprised that Deadline is throwing The Marvels under the bus to try to protect Madame Web here though...

The Marvels -78% drop on its second weekend was due in part to the fact that it lumped in Thursday night previews into the 3-Day weekend as is what usually happens when a movie isn't released on a weird day like Madame web was. Thursday wasn't a preview night for Madame Web since it was released on Valentine's Day Wednesday, so Thursday's numbers were not included in the 3-Day Box office.

We here know this, after JSF figured that out sometime in mid-2023, but your average Deadline reader is not aware of this. I'd argue unless you were in the industry or tracked it like Bruce does, the chances that you would know this are almost zero percent.

The Marvels made $6.6 Million on Preview Thursday, so if you don't include that, it dropped -74% compared to Madame Web's -64% drop.

It still did "better" than The Marvels did by that singular metric, but again... The Marvels grossed $39.5 Million on opening weekend without Preview Thursday included to Madame Web's $15.3 Million. To try and claim now that Madame Web isn't doing worse than The Marvels did is extremely disingenuous on the part of Deadline.

A lot of those international numbers already came in for the weekend too, and it's only at $61 Million worldwide. At this point, Madame Web might not even make it's fake $80 Million production budget.

It actually cost $100 to $120 Million.

We're living in Bidenflationland now. I doubt anybody involved in this is going to find another job in Hollywood.

Wow... Madame Web got a huge international bump since that last post. When it was only at $61 Million worldwide with what looked to be a decent chunk of the international numbers in, fast forward a day or two and it's already up to $78 Million Worldwide. Apparently the international appetite for this was greater than here in the states and hasn't dropped off as much. It's now $42 Million international vs. $35.8 Million US.

It won't have a problem hitting $80 Million now. Grossing only around $400k on Monday, unless it has a monster Cheap Seat Tuesday, it won't do that before Friday night, but even with Dune Part 2 coming out this weekend it will hit $80 Million by Sunday.

As previously highlighted, the 2021 adaptation was a critical and commercial success with $108.9 million domestically and $433.8 million worldwide despite a simultaneous streaming release during the early phases of pandemic recovery, with Covid still a significant concern among some audiences.

Dune: Part Two‘s pre-sales have dwarfed Part One‘s through the same point before release by over 116 percent according to various models. Drivers include the film’s stellar reviews (97 percent from 182 Rotten Tomatoes critics as of Wednesday morning), goodwill gleaned from its predecessor, pent-up demand for a theatrical event film, and the rising star power of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, who topline the film alongside a strong ensemble cast.

The Sterile Spectacle of “Dune: Part Two”

By Justin Chang | February 27, 2024

https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2024/03/11/dune-part-two-movie-revi
ew

Having been delayed, amid the recent Hollywood strikes, from its original release date, in the fall of 2023, “Dune: Part Two” is understandably eager to get going. It’s off before we’ve even glimpsed the Warner Bros. logo, whose famous water tower is a helpful reminder to hydrate: we’ve got a long, dust-choked ride ahead. While the screen is black, a heavily distorted voice hisses something that we recognize as words only by the grace of subtitles: “Power over Spice is power over all.” The rare newbie to the Dune-iverse may be confused: is this a story of cumin bondage? But the meaning will be clear enough to readers of Frank Herbert’s 1965 science-fiction colossus or to those who have watched the 2021 adaptation, “Dune: Part One.”

That picture—directed, like this one, by Denis Villeneuve—dropped us into an aggressively beige and brutalist version of Herbert’s cosmos and set in motion a saga of feudal conquest and environmental ruin. At the heart of the plot is the substance known as spice, capable of prolonging life, inducing prophetic visions, and enabling interstellar travel. (It’s good for any kind of trip.) Spice has long triggered fights and conspiracies among those seeking to control supply, because it exists only on Arrakis, a desert planet plagued by giant sandworms.

“Dune: Part Two” opens where the previous movie ended, at the conclusion of an especially cutthroat game of thrones. It’s still the year 10191, and the bald-headed baddies of House Harkonnen, having vanquished the nobler, hairier lords of House Atreides, are now running Arrakis and its spice-mining operations. But hope springs anew in the desert, where the hero of the tale—Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), son of the tragically slain Duke Leto Atreides—has gone full T. E. Lawrence, taking refuge with blue-eyed, Bedouin-like desert dwellers known as the Fremen.

Paul—fifteen in Herbert’s book—possesses extraordinary mental acuity, precocious fighting skills, luxurious windswept locks, and, as things proceed, more epithets than anyone under the age of twenty should be saddled with: Mahdi, Muad’Dib, Usul, Lisan al-Gaib, Kwisatz Haderach. You’ve heard of messiah complexes, but Paul’s case is uniquely burdensome. A faction of Fremen, led by the wry and avuncular Stilgar (a wonderful Javier Bardem), believes that Paul will lead their people to triumph over their Harkonnen oppressors. Paul’s noble mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson, all fire and steel), belongs to a shadowy religious sisterhood, the Bene Gesserit, with its own twisted designs on her son. (To add a nativity story to this heady theological brew, Lady Jessica is pregnant, and Villeneuve, perhaps with a nod to Stanley Kubrick, grants us a womb with a view.)

Is the prophecy true? Does it even matter, so long as Paul can weaponize his worshipful following in the pursuit of personal vengeance? Chani (Zendaya), the fierce and beautiful warrior who haunted his dreams in the first film, easily captures his heart in this one, and she tosses cold water—O.K., a drop of spittle—on his delusions of divine grandeur. Yet Zendaya, an actor of tremulous, often wordless nuance, also shows us the mounting alarm behind Chani’s skepticism. “Fear is the mind-killer,” Herbert’s text warns, and faith may be deadlier still.

Paul harbors anxieties of his own. Even as the character gains in physical confidence and emotional stature, the swift and spindly Chalamet never fully sheds his boyish vulnerability. He and Zendaya get some brief moments of dunetop canoodling; were Villeneuve more of a sensualist, or Paul a bit more adventurous, we could be watching “Call Muad’Dib by Your Name.” Ultimately, though, he’s out to make war, not love. More than once, we behold his fiery visions of an apocalypse—a “holy war”—that may come to pass if he ascends. Herbert, steeping his Fremen mythology in details from Arab culture and Muslim precepts, used the word “jihad.”

The apparent decision to avoid the J-word must have been made long before the most recent conflagration in the Middle East, but the movie, pitting Fremen fundamentalists against a genocidal oppressor, can scarcely hope to escape the horror of recent headlines. Yet if the movie is, among other things, a timely parable of Arab liberation, it’s at best a slippery and reluctant one, in which the politics of revolution feel curiously under-juiced. In retaining the material’s Arabic filigree, albeit with a glaring paucity of Arab actors in key Fremen roles, Villeneuve and his co-writer, Jon Spaihts, follow the text with a cautious, noncommittal blandness. Which is not to say that the picture has no mind of its own or that it sidesteps politics entirely. Villeneuve may be more cinematic logician than ideologue, but, in implicating Paul as a possible charlatan, the director shrewdly feeds our own uneasiness. He can’t fully refute the long-standing charge that “Dune” is just another white-savior fantasy, but with a measure of self-awareness he can keep it in check.

In any event, he has bigger worms to fry. Paul, as part of his Fremen assimilation, must master the extreme sport of worm riding, which is a bit like windsurfing, a bit like rock climbing, and a hell of a thing to witness. Tellingly, it’s only in this glorious burst of spectacle, backed by the mighty surge of Hans Zimmer’s score, that “Dune: Part Two” rises above proficiency and flirts with transcendence. With Hollywood’s bulkiest coffers and most advanced technologies at his disposal, Villeneuve becomes a prophet in the wilderness, an evangelist for that old-time religion known as the movies. For a moment, at least, the worm turns.

From the start, Villeneuve has told the story of “Dune” with exceptional lucidity, and I don’t mean that entirely as a compliment. Hollywood places a naturally high premium on narrative coherence, whereas Herbert’s text—with its abstruse tangle of names and concepts, its intricate layering of conscious and subconscious perspectives—demands otherworldly leaps of imagination. Villeneuve’s tendency, evident in the immaculate sci-fi riddles of “Arrival” (2016) and “Blade Runner 2049” (2017), is to streamline, to iron out every last kink of confusion or ambiguity. In “Part One,” the actors wrapped their tongues around the Herbert lexicon with po-faced conviction. (Some of them make welcome returns, including Josh Brolin, as the Atreides weapons master Gurney Halleck, and the ever-formidable Charlotte Rampling, as a Bene Gesserit reverend mother.) The actors’ skill felt of a piece with the austerity and occasional anemia of the visuals; striking as it was, the aesthetic seemed to have been imposed from without by some Marie Kondo of dystopian minimalism.

“Part Two” marks an improvement, mainly because so much of it transpires not in sterile fortresses and hangars but in the vastness of the open desert, where we can better appreciate the life-or-death stakes, the hard shimmer of sunlight on sand, and the pleasing sophistication of the survival gear. When the Fremen insert siphoning tubes into their enemies’ corpses, insuring that not a single precious drop of liquid goes to waste, the world-building takes on a queasily intimate physicality. But the filmmaking loses some of that persuasiveness at scale: “Dune” is already drawing wishful comparisons to Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, but, for all the impressive pitch and frenzy of Villeneuve’s battle sequences, they don’t have Jackson’s pop-Wagnerian grandeur, his exultant B-movie flair.

Villeneuve occasionally explores the universe beyond Arrakis, which only makes you long to return to Arrakis. An oasis of greenery surrounds the duplicitous Emperor (Christopher Walken) and his daughter, Princess Irulan (Florence Pugh), but the change of scenery is all but undone by the characters’ colorless solemnity. More pallid still is the dread planet Giedi Prime, where the cinematographer Greig Fraser makes a stark palette shift to black-and-white, as if to emphasize the vampiric quality of the Harkonnens’ fascism. Here, the rancidly evil Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) soaks in a tub of oily chowder, while his loathsome nephew, Feyd-Rautha, prepares to succeed him as Psycho-Villain-in-Chief. Feyd-Rautha is played, amusingly, by Austin Butler, who is shorn of eyebrow, Skarsgårdian of voice, and altogether unrecognizable as the star of “Elvis” (2022). What an arc: from wowing the crowds in Vegas to shivving gladiators in a monochrome replica of Caesars Palace.

You needn’t have read a page of Herbert to guess that Feyd-Rautha will factor in this movie’s climactic showdown. But, even as “Dune: Part Two” builds toward a half-satisfying bout of imperial comeuppance, I found myself pitting Butler against another challenger: not Chalamet but Sting, who, strutting and sweating in galactic undies in David Lynch’s “Dune” (1984), captured rather more of Feyd-Rautha’s louche sexual menace. Those of us who retain a stubborn fondness for Lynch’s much maligned adaptation will sense what’s missing from Villeneuve’s: an imaginative density, a hint of psychoerotic danger, the grotesque, teeming aliveness of a fully inhabited world. Not that it will trouble anyone’s sleep, least of all the heads that rule over House Hollywood. The only world that matters here is the one that this “Dune,” a box-office messiah, has already conquered. Power over spice is power over all.

If they're not wrong and the international audience comes out strong for Part 2 like they did Part One, Dune 2 is going to easily take the top spot from all the Chinese flicks even without money from you Communists and the pink haired potbelly goblins on Twitter.

If you are thrilled by bald albinos with no eyebrows knife-fighting in the sand, Dune 2 is your movie.

I'm not going to watch it. I have no interest. The 80's movie was terrible. I never read the book. The Dune world does nothing for me. I put it up there with Blade Runner, which is another property that has a lot of fans but never did anything for me. I never saw that remake either.

This was not my point and you know it.

Piracy won't hurt this movie. People who are downloading it were never going to pay to see it in the first place.

It should easily take 1st place at the worldwide box office above the 4 Chinese films by the time it's out of the box office. It will be the first of many, and by mid-summer there won't be any Chinese flicks in the top 10.

That's all I'm saying. Nothing more, nothing less.

As if gunpowder was never invented, Dune's armies of swordsmen fight to death. In this future, even spears, bows and arrows are too high tech. It's swords and more swords. And still more swords. Slash/slash/stab!

Ticket sales will be the proof that Hollywood knows what the audience wants.

No. Not at all.

But I have a really good track record of predicting which movies are going to be successes and which are going to be flops.

Dune Part 2 is going to be a success and will easily make enough to be 1st place worldwide until something more successful comes out.

Whatever. Don't care. I'm not interested in the movie.

No. Ticket sales will be the proof that this movie is a success. We've already had one major box office failure with Argylle, and there will be plenty more in 2024. Less than there would have been though because Disney pumped the breaks and isn't really releasing much this year.

Dune Part 2 is "woke". Are you now hoping it fails?

Brian Herbert points out that his father’s books about Dune have a political message about Trump, a message that is clearly included in the movie:

In 1969, Frank Herbert published the first sequel, Dune Messiah, in which he warned about the dangers of following a charismatic leader (Trump) and showed the dark side of Paul Atreides. Many fans didn’t understand this message, because they didn’t want to see their superhero brought down from his pedestal. Still, the book sold well, and so did its predecessor. Looking back at Dune, it is clear that Dad laid the seeds of the troublesome direction he intended to take with his hero, but a lot of readers didn’t want to see it. John W. Campbell, the editor of Analog who made many useful suggestions when Dune was being serialized, did not like Dune Messiah because of this Paul Atreides issue.

Having studied politics carefully, my father believed that heroes made mistakes … mistakes that were simplified by the number of people who followed such leaders slavishly. In a foreshadowing epigraph, Frank Herbert wrote in Dune: “Remember, we speak now of the Muad‘Dib who ordered battle drums made from his enemies’ skins, the Muad’Dib who denied the conventions of his ducal past with a wave of the hand, saying merely: ‘I am the Kwisatz Haderach. That is reason enough.’ ” And in a dramatic scene, as Liet-Kynes lay dying in the desert, he remembered the long-ago words of his own father: “No more terrible disaster could befall your people than for them to fall into the hands of a Hero.”

“People tend to give over every decision-making capacity to any leader who can wrap himself in the myth fabric of the society,” Herbert wrote. “Hitler did it. Churchill did it. Franklin Roosevelt did it. Stalin did it. Mussolini did it.” These historical superheroes didn’t wear spandex: they wore the stories their people needed them to wear. Sometimes the results were glorious, but more often than not, they were ghastly.

I had my suspicions that there was some agenda stuff in there just because of the universal high praise. We haven't fixed all of the critics yet since they're not all sufficiently scared that they will lose their jobs either because their websites fail or they're replaced with AI. They're getting better though.

No. I'm indifferent. I've already told you three times that I don't care about this movie and I personally have zero interest in seeing it.

I don't believe that it's actually woke just because some random christian website I've never heard of before says it is, or even worse, because you interpreted an article that didn't say it was woke as saying that it was woke. I'll reserve judgement on that for now. And I certainly won't be taking any warped judgements you have on anything in the entire world seriously, as is tradition.

If it's woke it will fail. Period.

Weekend Box Office Predictions: Dune 2 to double the original film’s opening

https://www.joblo.com/weekend-box-office-predictions-dune-2-to-double-
the-original-films-opening
/

The first part was opened globally a week before the US got to see it. It only did $37 Million internationally before it made $41 Million in the US on opening weekend, but it did end up with nearly $325 Million internationally.

I've seen estimates of a Global opening (with the US included) as low as $170 Million and as high as $230 Million.

We'll see what happens.

When Frank Herbert wrote the Dune books, he knew that rule by an all-powerful leader (be it Baron Vladimir Harkonnen who is as fat as Trump or Paul Atreides or the God Emperor of Dune) would end tragically for everyone. But for some weird psychological reason, Trumptards want an all-powerful leader (with complete legal immunity) like fatso Trump to solve their problems. It is going to end tragically for the Trumptards.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Emperor_of_Dune

Eventually, if Hollywood makes enough Dune-themed movies, even the stupidest Trumptard will understand what the novels and movies are about, including the first movie made in 2021:

Leto II Atreides, the God Emperor, has ruled the universe as a tyrant for 3,500 years after becoming a hybrid of human and giant sandworm in Children of Dune. The death of all other sandworms as a result of the terraforming of Arrakis, and his control of the remaining supply of the all-important drug melange, has allowed him to keep civilization under his complete command. Leto has been physically transformed into a worm, retaining only his human face and arms, and though he is now seemingly immortal and invulnerable to harm, he is prone to instinct-driven bouts of violence when provoked to anger. As a result, his rule is one of religious awe and despotic fear.

6ix, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, the Trump (or the Vladimir Putin) in the Dune movies, ends up dead in the desert, a dessert for ants.

No. Nobody voting for Trump wants any of that.

Yours are delusions of a psychopath who watches too much MSNBC and gets all of his talking points from Kevin Drum.

Keep your TDS in the RWED.

P.S. Your definition of woke is not what woke actually is. You've consistently gotten that wrong and attributed things to it incorrectly time and time again.

Even if Frank Herbert was a precog and saw Trump coming and the book was written exactly as you say it was about Trump, that does not make Frank Herbert's Dune (or the movies) woke.

You don't get more woke than Dune 2! All the women in Dune 2 had roles raised upward into massive importance, very woke material, none of which was in the novel. The women in the movie, unlike the book, take charge, run into battle, bashing in heads with boulders. The movie stripped the following non-woke material. The novel ends with these words, making absolutely sure that everyone understands that women are strictly sex objects and baby-making machines:
Quote:

"What of the Fremen?" Jessica asked.

"The Fremen are mine," Paul said. “What they receive shall be dispensed by Muad'Dib. It'll begin with Stilgar as Governor on Arrakis, but that can wait."

"And for me?" Jessica asked.

"Is there something you wish?"

"Perhaps Caladan," she said, looking at Gurney. “I'm not certain. I've become too much the Fremen ... and the Reverend Mother. I need a time of peace and stillness in which to think."

"That you shall have," Paul said, "and anything else that Gurney or I can give you."

Jessica nodded, feeling suddenly old and tired. She looked at Chani. “And for the royal concubine?"

"No title for me," Chani whispered. “Nothing. I beg of you."

Paul stared down into her eyes, remembering her suddenly as she had stood once with little Leto in her arms, their child now dead in this violence. “I swear to you now," he whispered, "that you'll need no title. That woman over there will be my wife and you but a concubine because this is a political thing and we must weld peace out of this moment, enlist the Great Houses of the Landsraad. We must obey the forms. Yet that princess shall have no more of me than my name. No child of mine nor touch nor softness of glance, nor instant of desire."

"So you say now," Chani said. She glanced across the room at the tall princess.

"Do you know so little of my son?" Jessica whispered. “See that princess standing there, so haughty and confident. They say she has pretensions of a literary nature. Let us hope she finds solace in such things; she'll have little else.” A bitter laugh escaped Jessica. “Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she'll live as less than a concubine -- never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she's bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine -- history will call us wives."

I know thousands of Trumptards. Not one is worth a goddamn. Not one knows that about themselves or that they are marching to destruction behind fatso Trump, no more than fatso Baron Vladimir Harkonnen's people knew they would get destroyed while following their designated fat-ass lunatic leader.

The National Review took a big shit on Dune: Part 2, but after the review mentioned a good movie:

Nothing in Villeneuve’s Dune series is as good as Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon, which revives mythic understanding of both mankind’s history and fate. Rebel Moon shares the pop-culture wit of David Lynch’s 1984 Dune adaptation, but instead of surrealism, Snyder brought kinetic, erotic excitement that elevated the sci-fi genre. Its imagery is daring, immediate, and reverberant, Dune: Part 2 is the anti–Rebel Moon. Moviegoers who settle for Villeneuve’s monotonous formula surrender to film culture’s decline.

Uh huh...

Dune | Frank Herbert’s Homophobia, Baron Harkonnen, and Queer Menace

An incestuous pedophile as originally written, we explore the homophobic legacy of Dune’s queer-coded Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

nk-herberts-homophobia
/

Quote:

This time little of Herbert’s more unpleasant characterization made it to the screen but in the novel, Baron Harkonnen – an incestuous pedophile – is the only gay character in the series. And everything about the Baron is designed to be as repulsive as possible to a contemporary reader so that he would be singled out as the most cartoonishly villainous character out of the book’s antagonists. His physical appearance is described as “grossly and immensely fat” with “suspensors” under his robes to actually hold up his flesh, making him yet another fat villain demonized for their weight. Herbert contrasts the Baron’s large body with the young and lithe slaveboys that he lusts after and exploits, in order to further drive home the horror of him using his immense power over them.

Sounds like Herbert was writing about Kevin Drum. Or maybe Harvey Weinstein. Like it or not, Harvey was one of Yours.
