My thoughts?

It looks fun. I'm actually pretty hyped to see it after watching the trailer. I can't imagine not enjoying this movie, especially if you're a fan.

That being said...

At 54 years old, Cate Blanchett is way too old to be playing Lilith, but they did right by the look otherwise. She's a great actress so maybe she can pull it off.

Kevin Hart appears to be a great choice for Roland.

Krieg doesn't appear to get enough screentime. Salvador and Maya missing entirely from the movie is tragic.

At 61 years old, Gina Gershon is WAY too old to play Moxxi. She would have been a great fit for the role back when Striptease was released in theaters back in 1996. I dunno. Not the biggest character in the first place, and Gershon is a fine enough actress so it's probably alright.

Ariana Greenblatt is our needless race swap for Tiny Tina. At 16 years old she's also a little too old to be playing Tiny Tina, who was only 13 years old in the games. Despite these two issues she does seem to do the character quite a bit of justice.

And I don't really know which Borderlands game this is supposed to be a part of, or if it's a mixture of several of them. I've only ever played Borderlands 2, but I played the hell out of it and it is IMO one of the greatest games ever made. So when they talk about the vault, that's what they were looking for in Borderlands 2. So why the hell isn't Handsome Jack, one of the greatest video game villains ever made in this movie?

Instead they're giving us a made up character in the personification of a company in the games called Atlas, and making the big bad of the movie the CEO of Atlas Corporation named Atlas.

Stupid choice.

And some of the awesome characters that were playable in the 1st game and came back as storyline NPCs in the second game like Mordecai are in this movie either.

Maybe Lionsgate didn't have the budget for doing Bloodwing justice? But it shouldn't have cost all that much because without Handsome Jack in the movie they shouldn't be introducing us to Slagged Bloodwing anyhow, and that's where they'd really be blowing the budget.

At least they didn't leave Scooter out...

Personally, I hope this movie does VERY well. You can't please all the fans, but at least it looks like they actually tried here, which is more than you can say for a lot of the recent video game properties put on film or on streaming services in the last few years.

And in the age of IPs, if this one does well enough, hopefully they get a chance to expand on the universe and they'll have a chance to put Handsome Jack front and center as the main antagonist and make it up to us when they announce Borderlands 2.

Thought it might be an interesting article...

But you start it off like this and you lose me really quick.

Quote:

COVID-19 drove people to do many wild things. It’s not that surprising, considering the pandemic began with the President of these United States suggesting people get some sun and inject bleach to stave off illness. But of all the toilet seat licking, “Imagine” singing, and anti-vax grifting, perhaps the most surprising thing to happen these awful four years was Cate Blanchett joining the cast of Borderlands. Seriously, what the hell is Lydia Tár doing?

Yeah. Uh... No.

Enjoy the rest of your time working at AV Club, Mr. Schimkowitz. I hope you're saving that money because you don't have that job 5 years from now. It's being done by A/I by then and/or AV Club doesn't exist anymore.

I'll bet Lionsgate wishes right now they did what the fans wanted and used the voice actor who did Claptrap from the games instead of getting Jack Black.

This is weird I see Lionsgate is going up against...itself.... there is also a remake revampe 'The Crow' Lionsgate now slotted in at the same time period, and a number of review people have said the re-imagining remake is unwatchable.

unless they movie it a few weeks earlier or later to help the Borderlands film?

I don't really see a great future for Borderlands either way.

I was already not pleased with the casting choices and making all the sexy girls being played by women who have already gone through menopause. But they should have just gone with the original voice actor for Clap-Trap instead of paying millions to Jack Black. Everyone was saying that even before the events that have unfolded last month. And really, there was no reason not to use the original voice actor since everybody loved him and he's already done the job at least 4 times before.

I don't imagine that many of the core Borderlands fanbase is going to go out and see this one with all the hate I'm seeing online for the movie from them. So that leaves the normies. I think this movie is probably a little too "weird" for normies who aren't familiar with the franchise.

I've re-titled this thread on 7/30 after having seen on two fairly trustworthy outfits that the budget Lionsgate spent on producing this is $100 Million. (We will revisit this once the movie comes out and we know for sure).

If that number is true, and we should know that soon, I think this one probably makes some money for Lionsgate like A Quiet Place: Day One made some money for Paramount.

As much as I'd love to see this one fail because of the terrible casting choices, a $100 Million budget probably saves it here. It would only need to make $250 Million to break even, and I have a hard time believing that in the middle of summer it won't manage that.

Day One only had a $67 Million budget though, so it will have made a little over $100 Million for Paramount. With the $100 Million budget on Borderlands, Lionsgate is probably not going to see a return that large.

Based off the trailer, the only two they got right were Roland and Tiny Tina.

Clap Trap was the easiest to get right and they blew that. They already had a perfectly excellent voice actor that was loved by the fans but they got Jack Black instead. I'm so old now the kids today don't even know who Jack Black is, so that decision is as puzzling to me as the choice to make every woman in the franchise a card carrying AARP member.

I would have to knock my dad out and drag him to see this movie, but half the cast is way closer to his age than mine.

And what of sequels? Are we witnessing the first time in the last 30 years that a studio wasn't making a movie with the intention of creating more if it was a success?

Forget about Blanchett and Gina Gershon (whom the article seems to forget is in this movie)... How much longer do you suppose Jamie Lee Curtis is going to be with us anyway?

The more I think about this whole thing, the dumber it gets.

Oh boy.

6% Critic score on Rotten Tomatoes with 52 reviews. 0% Top Critics score.

37% All Audience score / 52% verified audience score.

1/2 Star: This movie is absolutely horrible, I'm not sure who it was meant for but it certainly wasn't for the gamers who played and loved the borderlands games.

...

1/2 Star: If you like Borderlands do not waste your money. This is straight up disrespectful and terrible.

...

1/2 Star: I geniuenly think most reviewers are paid because this movie was absolutely horrible and the casting was horrific imo.

...

1/2 It was genuinely the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Nothing to do with the game lore, absolutely horrendous CGI and the worst acting I have seen from Cate Blanchett as well. Genuinely the best part was Claptrap since he looked like he does in the games. That's it. The movie itself felt like I was watching a trailer for 100 minutes. The longest continuous shot was about 15-20 seconds long. The way it was cut felt like some budget music video or something from TikTok, I was surprised there wasn't a subway surfers video playing on the side. Truly a waste of money and time. Out of the four of us that went to see the movie three have played the games, yet even the 4th person said it was terrible. If you liked the movie... I think you may have a problem.

Here's a positive review though:

5 Stars: Fantastic cinema experience, not only did I find a £10 on the floor on the way in, but my phone battery actually INCREASED the longer I sat watching this movie. We could talk about the clunky script, the flat characters, and boring action sequences, but any film that has Kevin Hart in a beret gets a standing ovation from me. Plus, at the end of the day £10 is £10, I’m going to use it to watch Deadpool again….

Yeah... I laughed pretty hard earlier this week when I saw ClownfishTV say it had 0%. But by the time I saw the video it had already risen to 3%. When I looked yesterday it was 6%.

Now it's a whopping 10%!

But that's just All Critics. Grace Randolph and the Disney Rah-Rah idiots all got their $50 for good RT reviews. The Top Critics still have it at 0%.

All audience is 35% and verified audience is 50%.

I'm wondering who's watching this and giving it a fresh rating. It isn't anybody who was a fan of the games. I guess they explained away a new story to actually address why all the women are so old. That's great. Except for at least two things right from the trailer...

1. Roland died when they were all still young.
2. Tiny Tina was like 12 or 13 years old when they were all still young.

Roland is alive, Tiny Tina is like 16 years old and the women in the cast are all octogenarians.

It's got to be people like my dad or brother who already saw Deadpool and never played Borderlands and thought it was okayish and didn't find anything too insulting in it that were giving it a fresh rating.

I'll bet it was a lot more than $125 Million.

Songbirds and Snakes, Expendables 4 and John Wick 4 cost Lionsgate $100 Million last year.

This has way more special effects than any of them, and it appears that extensive reshoots were done.

It was at least $150-$175 Million.

I think Borderlands was already a dying franchise.

I only played the 2nd game, and it was one of the best games I've ever played.

My brother told me that the 3rd one sucked though, and that seems to be the general consensus. That was years ago.

Honestly, the movie came out almost a decade too late anyhow. I heard it started shooting about 4 years ago, and Eli Roth left the project to work on Thanksgiving (the horror movie that did well last year).

I never played or saw the game, so I don't know how faithful the film is to what the game was. It seemed very childish.

The cast credits forgot to list Claptrap as playing Jar Jar Binks.

The costumes or masks were so cheesy, but then with hyper-definition, they highlighted how cheesy the costumes and props were. Kinda weird.

It was related to the game in only the most superficial ways. The costumes seemed to be fairly accurate, and they used names of people from the games, but the casting was ridiculous all around except for maybe Tiny Tina from what I saw in the trailer.

They added a bunch of characters that never existed in the 3 games or the prequel game, and a lot of great characters that should have been in it along side of the ones they used were completely absent.

The childishness was due to the PG13 rating. It's a gritty series, and they decided to cast a bunch of octogenarians to play sexy 25 year old women and filled it with a bunch of pee and poop jokes. They also decided to cast comedian Kevin Hart as the one guy in Borderlands 2 that should have been played by a serious actor.

All the old ladies make even less sense from the perspective of a studio wanting to make a franchise film that is going to have additional entries if the first one does well.

Quote:

Biggest mistake they made in the casting was not using the original voice actor from the series and replacing him with Jack Black. Since it was a voice over work, that decision made no sense at all, especially not from a financial standpoint. I'm sure they paid Jack Black 10 or 20 times what they would have paid the voice actor.

But that probably would be a hard character to put in a 2 hour Borderlands film without it coming off like Jar Jar Binks. He is written to be annoying, as well as serving to be the brunt of a lot of jokes. For a large part of the beginning of Borderlands 2 he serves as your guide, and later on he ends up being critical to a mission or two. There are side-quest things revolving around him in between that you could completely ignore if you want to ghost him like everyone else does. One of them revolves around setting up everything for the birthday party he was throwing for himself that nobody but you shows up to. Everybody in the game universe hates Clap Trap. Fans of the series are mixed on him, but he does have some redeeming qualities and you really just feel bad for him. He's like that guy in high school that didn't have any friends and always tried way too hard.

But when you're playing a game that has tons of actual gameplay in between the cut scenes and NPC dialogue, you don't actually see Clap Trap for a vast majority of a playthrough. I can only imagine how annoying he was if you've got to listen to him through the whole movie.

Quote:

I'll bet that was a waste of film right there. Nobody is ever going to make another Borderlands movie.

I do hope that maybe Amazon tries to make a series out of it one day though after how respectful they were to the Fallout franchise.

I've only ever played Borderlands 2, but it's one of the best games I've played to date. If Amazon made a series revolving around that game I'm there on Day 1.

The Crow opening weekend: $4,600,000 in the US, and it doesn't appear to have had an international release.

At $50 Million, it had half the budget of Borderlands, so it actually outperformed Borderlands in the US on opening weekend by a few percentage points. Without any international money coming in The Crow was an even bigger failure.

I just don't understand why it was even made.

The Crow is for niche audiences only, and they already had a cult classic.

The 15 year re-release of Coraline made $16,151,526 last week and another $5,038,976 this weekend, for a grand total so far of $21,190,502 in 10 days. That's just in the US.

There was a ton of "free" money called Venture Capital floating around because of a record amount of time where US interest rates were in the toilet. The fact that this money has disappeared under the Biden Administration is why the college "educated" millennial liberals are all finding themselves out of work now.

Also, Blackrock owns 8.16% of Lionsgate and Vanguard owns 8.56%.

Borderlands made $19,818 on Labor Day.

Why is this even in theaters anymore?

Wasn't David Hasselhoff a huge pop singer in Germany or something?

Maybe they're trying to find the one country that loves what they did with Borderlands?

the Hoff is a legend, pity he never learned a bass, drum or guitar

still doing songs, musical, shows, voice and Stage work

did Marvel before it was 'cool' Nick Fury

East Germany after the Wall falls they got to see old syndication tv, how cool Knight Rider tv was

the Hoff, Baywatched dismissed as smut softcore but he taught people CPR after the watched people run around in skimpy beach clothes

drank so much he forgot who he was and ate a burger off the floor like a dog then cleans himself up...don't get so drunk, stay sober

he sang at the Berlin Wall and took down the USSR

just give him a karaoke machine and he can take down Joe Stalin, a one man 'band' a piano-keyboard scarf and a leather jacket covered in motion lights

The saddest thing is that Randy Pitchford had some involvement with this too. And rather than make sure they were doing a good job making a movie that respected the original story and fans, he saved all of his energy to shit on fans on Twitter after they dumped this crap into theaters and nobody wanted to see it.

A lot of people give Todd Howard from Bethesda a lot of shit for his choices over the last decade, and in many cases rightfully so, but his involvement in the Fallout show on Amazon is probably what kept the normal untalented batch of worthless DEI hires out of the production so they couldn't damage the franchise like they did with Lord of the Rings. Or even worse, a Resident Evil franchise destroyer like they did over at Netflix.
