'Long' should not be so much of a problem if you have seen other long films, Dances With Wolves, LOTR, Seven Samurai, Interstellar, Carpenter's The Thing remake, The Deer Hunter, Avatar, Doctor Zhivago, Fiddler on the Roof, Ben-Hur, Avengers End Game, The Right Stuff, Last of the Mohicans, Gone With the Wind.

the perception of 'Long' can also be a matter of perspective I sometimes find 1 hour 20 min films to feel too long, I have never finished the Oscar winning 'The English Patient' I might only have seen 20mins or half an hour of it on tv but everytime those 20 mins it felt like 4 hours 'Long'

"Long" isn't a big deal when you're at home and you can pause and and/or go back to something you missed.

One of the problems with modern cinema is how long they've been making the movies. Since Nolan is making the movie, there's a fairly decent chance that a 3 hour runtime is justified. Many movies today with 2.5 to 3 hour or more run times are not justified though, and there was lazy editing and/or a director that thought what they did was a lot better than it actually was. Of the few movies I've watched out of the last 5 to 10 years, quite a few of them were long movies. And even being at home while watching them, they felt far too long and easily had 20 minutes to a half-hour that could have been removed without sacrificing the quality of the flick. In fact, the long run time actually brought the movies down in most cases.

Leave the long run times for a director's cut that die hard fans will want to pay money to see after the fact. 2 hours is already pushing it. 3 hours in a cinema with no intermission is miserable.

According to The Numbers, Barbie made $22,300,000 in previews on Thursday. The only movie to beat that in 2023 was Super Mario Bros with over $31 Million.

Nobody else was even close, with Guardians 3 and Ant Man 3 making $17.5 Million and Miles Morales 2 making $17.35 Million.

Gross.

Well... let's try to look at the bright side. At least people are telling Disney and WB that they're tired of superhero flicks anyhow.

Oppenheimer, meanwhile, made a much more modest $10,500,000 which is about what I expected either of these films to make in previews.

The existential risk researcher Toby Ord calls this era “the Precipice”: the first period in which humanity can destroy itself. The US would likely not have “sprinted” to the same extent, spending 0.4 percent of GDP, for a peacetime Manhattan Project. And Oppenheimer’s nemesis Lewis Strauss may have been right, if for the wrong reasons, when he accused Oppenheimer of helping the Soviet nuclear program. Quite simply, it would have taken the Soviets years longer if they couldn’t just copy the secrets of the Manhattan Project. Szilard and Albert Einstein, whose 1939 letter prompted President Franklin Roosevelt to begin the US nuclear program, later described their advocacy for the project as the greatest mistake of their life.

Oppenheimer’s folly: On black holes, fundamental laws and pure and applied science

On September 1, 1939, the same day that Germany attacked Poland and started World War 2, a remarkable paper appeared in the pages of the journal Physical Review. In it J. Robert Oppenheimer and his student Hartland Snyder laid out the essential characteristics of what we today call the black hole. Building on work done by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Fritz Zwicky and Lev Landau, Oppenheimer and Snyder described how an infalling observer on the surface of an object whose mass exceeded a critical mass would appear to be in a state of perpetual free fall to an outsider. The paper was the culmination of two years of work and followed two other articles in the same journal.

Then Oppenheimer forgot all about it and never said anything about black holes for the rest of his life.

He had not worked on black holes before 1938, and he would not do so ever again. Ironically, it is this brief contribution to physics that is now widely considered to be Oppenheimer’s greatest, enough to have possibly warranted him a Nobel Prize had he lived long enough to see experimental evidence for black holes show up with the advent of radio astronomy.

What happened? Oppenheimer’s lack of interest wasn’t just because he became the director of the Manhattan Project a few years later and got busy with building the atomic bomb. It also wasn't because he despised the free-thinking and eccentric Zwicky who had laid the foundations for the field through the discovery of black holes' parents - neutron stars. It wasn’t even because he achieved celebrity status after the war, became the most powerful scientist in the country and spent an inordinate amount of time consulting in Washington until his carefully orchestrated downfall in 1954. All these factors contributed, but the real reason was something else entirely – Oppenheimer just wasn’t interested in black holes. Even after his downfall, when he had plenty of time to devote to physics, he never talked or wrote about them. The creator of black holes basically did not think they mattered.

Oppenheimer’s rejection of one of the most fascinating implications of modern physics and one of the most enigmatic objects in the universe - and one he sired - is documented well by Freeman Dyson who tried to initiate conversations about the topic with him. Every time Dyson brought it up Oppenheimer would change the subject, almost as if he had disowned his own scientific children.

The reason, as attested to by Dyson and others who knew him, was that in his last few decades Oppenheimer was stricken by a disease which I call “fundamentalitis”. Fundamentalitis is a serious condition that causes its victims to believe that the only thing worth thinking about is the deep nature of reality as manifested through the fundamental laws of physics.

As Dyson put it:

“Oppenheimer in his later years believed that the only problem worthy of the attention of a serious theoretical physicist was the discovery of the fundamental equations of physics. Einstein certainly felt the same way. To discover the right equations was all that mattered. Once you had discovered the right equations, then the study of particular solutions of the equations would be a routine exercise for second-rate physicists or graduate students.”

Thus for Oppenheimer, black holes, which were particular solutions of general relativity, were mundane; the general theory itself was the real deal. In addition they were anomalies, ugly exceptions which were best ignored rather than studied. As Dyson mentions, unfortunately Oppenheimer was not the only one affected by this condition. Einstein, who spent his last few years in a futile search for a grand unified theory, was another. Like Oppenheimer he was uninterested in black holes, but he also went a step further by not believing in quantum mechanics. Einstein’s fundamentalitis was quite pathological indeed.

History proved that both Oppenheimer and Einstein were deeply mistaken about black holes and fundamental laws. The greatest irony is not that black holes are very interesting, it is that in the last few decades the study of black holes has shed light on the very same fundamental laws that Einstein and Oppenheimer believed to be the only thing worth studying. The disowned children have come back to haunt the ghosts of their parents.

Black holes took off after the war largely due to the efforts of John Wheeler in the US and Dennis Sciama in the UK. The new science of radio astronomy showed us that, far from being anomalies, black holes litter the landscape of the cosmos, including the center of the Milky Way. A decade after Oppenheimer’s death, the Israeli theorist Jacob Bekenstein proved a very deep relationship between thermodynamics and black hole physics. Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose found out that black holes contain singularities; far from being ugly anomalies, black holes thus demonstrated Einstein’s general theory of relativity in all its glory. They also realized that a true understanding of singularities would involve the marriage of quantum mechanics and general relativity, a paradigm that’s as fundamental as any other in physics.

In perhaps the most exciting development in the field, Leonard Susskind, Hawking and others have found intimate connections between information theory and black holes, leading to the fascinating black hole firewall paradox that forges very deep connections between thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and general relativity. Black holes are even providing insights into computer science and computational complexity. The study of black holes is today as fundamental as the study of elementary particles in the 1950s.

Einstein and Oppenheimer could scarcely have imagined that this cornucopia of discoveries would come from an entity that they despised. But their wariness toward black holes is not only an example of missed opportunities or the fact that great minds can sometimes suffer from tunnel vision. I think the biggest lesson from the story of Oppenheimer and black holes is that what is considered ‘applied’ science can actually turn out to harbor deep fundamental mysteries. Both Oppenheimer and Einstein considered the study of black holes to be too applied, an examination of anomalies and specific solutions unworthy of thinkers thinking deep thoughts about the cosmos. But the delicious irony was that black holes in fact contained some of the deepest mysteries of the cosmos, forging unexpected connections between disparate disciplines and challenging the finest minds in the field. If only Oppenheimer and Einstein had been more open-minded.

The discovery of fundamental science in what is considered applied science is not unknown in the history of physics. For instance Max Planck was studying blackbody radiation, a relatively mundane and applied topic, but it was in blackbody radiation that the seeds of quantum theory were found. Similarly it was spectroscopy or the study of light emanating from atoms that led to the modern framework of quantum mechanics in the 1920s. Scores of similar examples abound in the history of physics; in a more recent case, it was studies in condensed matter physics that led physicist Philip Anderson to make significant contributions to symmetry breaking and the postulation of the existence of the Higgs boson. And in what is perhaps the most extreme example of an applied scientist making fundamental contributions, it was the investigation of cannons and heat engines by French engineer Sadi Carnot that led to a foundational law of science – the second law of thermodynamics.

Today many physicists are again engaged in a search for ultimate laws, with at least some of them thinking that these ultimate laws would be found within the framework of string theory. These physicists probably regard other parts of physics, and especially the applied ones, as unworthy of their great theoretical talents. For these physicists the story of Oppenheimer and black holes should serve as a cautionary tale. Nature is too clever to be constrained into narrow bins, and sometimes it is only by poking around in the most applied parts of science that one can see the gleam of fundamental principles.

As Einstein might have said had he known better, the distinction between the pure and the applied is often only a "stubbornly persistent illusion". It's an illusion that we must try hard to dispel.

Oppenheimer Ending

Now, however, comes the key moment, and the one that strikes the dark note that the film closes on. As Einstein turns to leave, Oppenheimer reminds him of an earlier conversation they had before the testing of the first atom bomb, when the Manhattan Project physicists were worried that the chain reaction caused by the atomic bomb might never end — that it could proceed to ignite the Earth’s atmosphere and destroy the planet.

“When I came to you with those calculations,” Oppenheimer tells Einstein, “we thought we might start a chain reaction that might destroy the entire world.”

“What of it?” Einstein asks.

“I believe we did,” Oppenheimer says.

As the camera closes in on his face, we cut to an array of modern-day nuclear missiles. (Look fast, and you might notice a sliver of Oppenheimer’s telltale silhouette in the corner of the frame.) Drifting among the clouds, we see vapor trails of nukes being fired through the air. We then see Oppenheimer, stuck inside a plane, watching the night sky lit up with rockets passing above — an image tied to a memory earlier in the film from David Dastmalchian’s William Borden, who recalled being in a plane watching German V-2 rockets headed toward England. We see explosions across the surface of the planet, their blast radiuses unspeakably vast. Then, a ring of fire begins to consume the Earth. The very last image of the film is Oppenheimer’s face in extreme close-up, staring at the droplets in the pond, and closing his eyes. Perceptive viewers might realize that these final frames echo the movie’s opening images, which were of the young Oppenheimer in close-up, looking at droplets of rain in a small pool of water.

It’s an astonishingly powerful ending, in part because it gives grim cinematic life to the generational fear that nukes are effectively Chekhov’s gun: a weapon introduced in an earlier act of our lives that will inevitably be used before our story ends. Nolan, like many of us, grew up under the specter of thermonuclear annihilation. It’s an old, defining fear that has been dormant in recent years, but it’s never really gone away, has it? Recent events in Russia and Ukraine have served as grisly reminders that we all remain just a hair trigger away from incinerating ourselves in a nuclear holocaust.

So, that’s the ultra-nihilistic reading. I did ask Nolan whether he’d anticipated this kind of reaction to the finale. “It’s the response I’d hoped for in terms of the strength of the reaction,” he said. “That specificity certainly wasn’t my intention.” Nolan doesn’t want to send messages with his work, and he’s adamant about never being didactic. But he did want, he says “a strong set of troubling reverberations at the end. And I felt strongly that if I did my job right, those would land differently with each individual watching the film and different audiences.”

2) Oppenheimer, the man himself, was not sure that the Trinity bomb would actually explode as designed, but there is no uncertainty for the viewers unless they wandered into the wrong auditorium while looking for Barbie.

3) Oppenheimer was even less sure that the Trinity bomb wouldn't set the atmosphere on fire, but there is no uncertainty now.

Rabi held a more amused, though hardly uncritical, view of Oppenheimer’s high-flown airs. They first met in 1929, while both were pursuing postgraduate studies in Europe. Rabi attributed their dissimilarities to class, Oppenheimer having been, in his unsparing words, “a rich spoiled Jewish brat,” the eldest son of highly assimilated German Jews. In the years immediately following the war, public opinion about the use of the atomic bomb hadn’t yet solidified. The first time Oppenheimer appeared on the big screen was in August 1946, when he starred in the 18-minute documentary “Atomic Power,” which was part of Time’s “The March of Time” series. Three weeks after “Atomic Power” was released, John Hersey’s searing, book-length article “Hiroshima” appeared in the New Yorker, awakening many Americans for the first time to the horrors of the bomb.

Fearing they were losing the battle for the history books, Truman and other officials sprang into action, compelling former Secretary of War Henry Stimson to defend the use of the bomb in a Harper’s magazine article published in February 1947. The story, which reads as a simple recitation of the facts, portrays the decision to use the bomb as one made with sagacious care. It introduced the argument—repeated often since—that the bomb prevented an Allied land invasion of Japan that would have cost “over a million casualties, to American forces alone.”

“That article really set the history for most Americans for the next generation,” Bird says. “And the narrative was, ‘Oh, it was a difficult decision. It was terrible. But it was necessary, and it saved perhaps a million American lives.’”

The first major Hollywood film about the bomb, The Beginning or the End, debuted the month after Stimson’s article. Initially conceived by atomic scientists as a way to educate the public about the dangers of nuclear warfare, the movie went through script approvals and retakes ordered by Groves and Truman that turned it into a “pro-bomb celebration—dictated by the Pentagon and White House,” wrote Greg Mitchell in his 2020 book, The Beginning or the End: How Hollywood—and America—Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Directed by Norman Taurog, the film “is so instructive because it is the earliest, and one of the most complete, reassertions of the pro-bomb narrative just when doubts were being raised,” Mitchell tells Smithsonian magazine. “Even Truman got involved, to the extent of ordering a costly retake and getting the actor playing him fired. How do you get the CURRENT audience score? I can only find the original tomatometer score, when only Wokeness was rating it.

Bruce had mentioned that he knew Barbie make $1.1M on Wednesday, but he didn't post it in the Box office figures. And then Thursday was $21.2M. I don't know what his rules are. dude.

Today, Monday, my largest local theater (had barbie at 7pm last Wed, alongside Mummies) has 21 showings of Barbie, 9 of Oppy, 7 DR, and 4 of SoF.
Tomorrow, Tuesday is listed for 28 of Barbie, 10 Oppy, 6 DR, and 5 SoF - most starting about 10 or 11 am.

So thisis the Greta Gerwig Divorce movie?
As mentioned in videos, it was a Coup for the PR Dept to hide how bad the film was, and just trick folks into going to it.
I had gotten the impression it was sort of a remake of Clueless, and Robbie was able to pull off the vapid and vacant hollow plastic head persona - does that qualify as acting?

But it sounds like the true feat is a Tour De Force from Ryan Gosling. Maybe if somebody put together a short film or video, just clips of Ryan's Ken segments, it might actually be worth watching.

The movie may not make it clear that Oppenheimer, despite his reputation for brilliance, wasn't smart. The movie does make it clear that Einstein was smart and both worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. When the shocking news became public about Oppenheimer losing his security clearance, which is the main point of the movie, Einstein told a reporter that he thought that Oppenheimer should go to the government, tear up his clearance, tell them they were fools and resign. As usual, Einstein saw through the thicket of complexity to the heart of the matter. But such behavior would have been entirely out of character for Oppenheimer. After conferring with his lawyers, Oppenheimer decided to fight the charges. And that is why there is a movie called "Oppenheimer". He was doomed and wise Einstein knew it before foolish Oppenheimer did. If a movie about a guy who killed hundreds of thousands of women and children but slowly developed a conscience against murder in a way that ended up humiliating him during a trial for a security clearance, "Oppenheimer" is your kind of entertainment.

I'm also going to go out on a limb and guess that Avatar: The Way of Water is the only movie released in 2022 that had a higher Monday than Barbie just did when it made $32,270,430 on December 26th on its 2nd Monday in theaters (which is twice the $16,257,078 it made on its first Monday when half the country was an icicle.)

I stand corrected. There were two movies in 2022 that made more than Barbie just did on a Monday. Both Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick.

Without adjusting for inflation, Barbie is the 13th highest grossing Monday at the Domestic Box Office of all time.

And let's take a look at the others above it...

1. Black Panther (February 19th, 2018): It wasn't the black holiday Juneteenth back then, but it was still a federal holiday and all the black women they have put in every position in the post offices all over the country were able to go see it.

2. Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens (December 21st, 2015): Another Monday, but right in the middle of Winter Break for kids, which I'm sure had at least some impact on the nubmers.

3. Spider-Man: No Way Home (December 20th, 2021): Yet another Monday during the middle of Winter Break for the kids.

4. Avengers: Endgame (April 29th, 2019): No holiday to speak of, unless we're counting "International Dance Day", but it was freakin' Endgame. The pre-plandemic movie they compare all other movies to today.

5. Top Gun: Maverick (May 30th, 2022): Memorial Day. 'Nuff Said.

6. Avatar: The Way of Water (December 26th, 2022): The day after Christmas and the highest grossing movie of 2022.

7. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (December 26th, 2016): The day after Christmas and what many claim is the only good thing to happen to Star Wars since Disney took over.

8. Star Wars Ep. VII: The Force Awakens (December 28th, 2016): This movie still sucks a week later, but people were still high off of the idea of a new Star Wars movie and it was still the tail end of Winter Break.

9. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (December 23, 2019): Star Wars had been beaten into the ground by Disney at this point, but it's still a new Star Wars movie and it was the Monday before Christmas.

10. Spider-Man 2 (July 5th, 2004): Arguably the best Spider-Man movie ever made, the day after Independence Day and a Monday that everyone who gets federal holidays off got off.

11. Star Wars Ep. VIII: The Last Jedi (December 25th, 2017): The movie that arguably killed Disney Star Wars, but again... Star Wars and on Christmas day to boot.

12. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (May 26th, 2008): People wouldn't have complained so much about this one if they knew what was coming 15 years later. Yeah... it was trash, but people were still excited about Indy back then and this was Memorial day.

What was Monday, July 24th, 2023? Nothing. Barbie made 13th place on the all time Monday list with several movies that dated back to the mid-2000's on a non-holiday Monday and is the only movie on the list that isn't a Marvel Property, a Lucasfilm Property and/or a sequel. It is also the only movie in the top 13 on that list to have not fallen directly on a holiday, a federally observed holiday, or Christmas break besides Avengers: End Game which didn't ever need to fall on a holiday to get in the top 5 on that list.

I very much hope this movie was front loaded, but with the data available right now, saying that it is front-loaded is speaking from emotions instead of math.

Once again, let's break down which movies are above it.

1. Spider-Man: Far From Home (Jul 2, 2019): Two days before Independence Day.

3. The Amazing Spider-Man (Jul 3, 2012): One day before Independence Day.

6. The Lion King (Jul 23, 2019): No holidays in vicinity. Billion Dollar Live Action Disney Remake Era.

8. Transformers (July 3, 2007): Day before Independence Day.

Once again, all of those movies were Marvel and/or Lucasfilm and/or sequels/reboots and/or fell on a holiday. Transformers is a joke these days, but the hype around that was was insane back in 2007.

Unless Barbie falls off a cliff, there could be a chance the movie makes it to the top of the 2023 Worldwide Box Office vs. Production Budget despite it's (modest for a blockbuster) $100 Million Production Budget. That's the same budget that Super Mario Bros had, and it's number 2 on the list with 1,355% right now. And although it's impossible for me to go back and get the actual worldwide number for SMB after 5 days of release, I can see that Barbie already has made $10 Million more than SMB did in the Domestic Box Office in that time.

But if you look at the way the numbers were tabulated for both movies, Day 5 on SMB is Sunday where it is Tuesday for Barbie with no "preview day" for SMB... So shenanigans?

If we match up Tuesday to Tuesday, SMB was ahead of Barbie by about $26 Million at this point.

In just 5 days Barbie has already made 408% of its Production Budget back worldwide.

I think this is all terrible news, but I'm not really sure about that front-loaded theory of yours, JSF.

I was hoping for a 70% drop off in the 2nd weekend, but we're 2 days into the week right now when most folk are working and we have yet to see a 70% drop off from the bloated Friday number that includes whatever it pulled in on Wednesday and Thursday of last week.

We're probably going to see figures in the very high $20 Million to middle $30 Million range all weekend.
