The Beekeeper looks good. Apparently Statham's 5th film in a year.

Argyle looks interesting - the cast seems promising.
Also Bikeriders, Jodie Comer headlines a promising cast.

With the dreck that has been clogging the cinema for the past month or so, I don't know why these are not out already.
Especially Beekeeper.

If there is anybody left here who still watches film in Cinema, and are not illiterate, what are you hoping to see?

Deadpool 3, if I ever get around to watching Deadpool 2.

Dune: Part 2, if I ever get around to watching Dune: Part 1.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Kingdom, if I ever get around to watching Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Borderlands, if it's not a woke piece of crap.

Beetlejuice 2, if it's not a woke piece of crap.

Joker 2, if it's not a woke piece of crap.

I won't be watching Gladiator 2, since it stars Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington, so obviously that's a woke piece of crap since we're just not even going to bother with any historical accuracy anymore.

Yes, Ghostbusters is keeping the cast from Afterlife, not the Woke bimbos.

Including McKenna Grace. Who is also cast with Thomasin McKenzie in Perfect for next year, even tho it's an Olivia Wilde work.

Hollyweird is almost dead, everything seems to be a prequel or sequel or re-imagining or a remake.

I don't know much on Borderlands but SixString explained it as a game so maybe it can be worth checking

Won't be watching much maybe Kraven the Hunter its one of those comicbook things but at least its a new unknown property, the Japan anime version of Lord of the Rings The War of the Rohirrim could be worth a look I know its been done but the animation thing is different. 2024 looks like another dead year for cinema, its all stuff we have seen before and maybe South Korea or Germany can fill the gap and show some movies in the theater but I don't they have the connections to export and culturally they don't sell like the USA did. I don't think everyone likes subtitles, there is also an opportunity for US indie film makers to step up as the old Hollywood pervert system dies.

I should probably be very clear here... I fully expect Borderlands to be bad and/or be woke.

The Super Mario Bros Move success (and my genuine, unironic love for the 90's movie) notwithstanding, almost every video game adaptation in history has been terrible. For decades it was because of reasons such as low budgets, and very little source material to work with because of the primitive nature of the early games or adult people charged with making the movies based off of stuff they didn't understand and maybe they'd seen their nephew playing at a family party once or something. (Which, ironically, are all reasons why the 90's Super Mario Bros. movie was so good, and despite decades of it being trashed online it's finally finding its long deserved cult following).

But recently they've been getting big budgets and name actors to do video game movies, but they've been filling it with their agenda that they've been shoving down everybody's throat for the last decade. That's fully what I expect Borderlands to be when it's released by Lionsgate this year.

If there's a single race or gender swap in that movie, I'm out.

There's no need for any of that shit taking place. The cast was already diverse, and not to the game's detriment. I've only ever played Borderlands 2, but I consider that game a Masterpiece. Everything about it was good. If pressed to give it one negative comment the only thing I could come up with is that it was too addictive.

If they swap the race or gender of one single character in this movie the only thing that is "signalling" is that the entire production is going to be a woke disaster.

But yeah... outside of a video game ripoff, the only movies that even look jokingly interesting to me so far in 2024 are sequels (and sequels to reboots).

And will I ever even watch any of them? Maybe. But plenty of time has passed since Deadpool 2, Dune: Part 1 and Ghostbusters: Afterlife came out and I'm in no more of a hurry to see any of those now that they're getting sequels than I was when they originally came out.

My guess for Joker 2 is that even if they didn't wokeify it, it's just going to be a pointless sequel. I did mention at the time that the folks heading up DC should probably ditch their current Universe and start one that was more grounded in Joker's universe. I think that could have been really interesting. Certainly it would have been much more interesting than all of the super-expensive and CGI heavy flops they've been putting out ever since.

But since that's not going to happen, what story could you even tell in Joker 2 that needs to be told? Especially when we've already made it clear that Bruce Wayne is a kid and Batman isn't going to be a thing in that universe for decades.

There's REAL potential with that premise, especially after Phoenix's excellent performance in the first one. If they played the long game and really thought this out, the idea of seeing Joker installing an unstoppable crime base while poisoning an easily corruptible government in Gotham City long before Batman was even an idea in child Bruce's head could be captivating. But only if they followed through with it and got Joaquin on board to come back in about 15 to 20 years to reprise the role when Bruce becomes Batman and Joker finally gets an adversary worthy of him.

But let's not kid ourselves here. Nobody in Hollywood has that kind of patience or foresight to pull anything like this off. Spider-Man: No Way Home wasn't planned. It was luck. It was a fluke. It was marvelous... But it was also an accident. A rare case of the stars perfectly aligning. It is never going to happen again.

Let's just do what Disney would do, get Lady Gaga on board to give the plebs yet another version of Harley Quinn, put a chick in it and make her lame.

Let's just say, there's got to be a real reason to see it to get me to sit through a sequel. The first Joker was an extremely difficult watch. If all they're going to do is up the gore level and body count without bothering to tell a good story or give you an idea that there's a plan in the future to bring in a very different Batman than we've seen before, I'm sitting this one out too.

Beetlejuice 2 could be a pretty easy sell for me though.

Make it funny. Don't make it woke. Don't give me some lame back-story to Beetlejuice that makes him a sympathetic character. I'd be happy to watch Michael Keaton reprise that roll from my childhood if they don't fuck it up.

It seems like they're on the right track at least. It's sad that Gina Davis (and even Alec Baldwin) won't be coming back for it. And I don't imagine Jeffrey Jones has been getting a lot of work since pleading no-contest to taking lewd photos of a 14 year old boy, so it's no surprise he won't be in it.

But Tim Burton IS directing. Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara are going to be in it. Jenna Ortega has said some pretty based shit to the public about politics and Hollywood and I'd be happy to finally watch something she's starring in, and obviously just by looking at pictures of her portraying Wednesday Addams there's no doubt that she'd work in any Burton film, let alone a Beetlejuice flick. Willem DaFoe just seems like he was born to be in a Beetlejuice movie.

I'm sure that with all the makeup, they could make Keaton look just like he did in the original even though he's 72 years old now. Hell... even without the makeup I liked his Batman in The Flash earlier this year. But he did have the two cringiest lines in the movie that couldn't have been delivered more flatly if you paid him another Million for it.

You wanna get nuts? Let's get nuts!

Bring back some of that Batman (1989) Bruce Wayne/Patrick Bateman energy Mike, and you might have one of the biggest Hollywood hits of 2024.

Thanks for The Fall Guy. I didn't know.

Where to start.

Written by Glen Larsen. Stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, in an apparently adorable role, according to the trailer. She plays a director filming a copy of Edge of Tomorrow.
My favorite actor is Lee Majors, and he is in it - although this is the series that I didn't get to watch much.
Also Teresa Palmer, maybe in the Heather Thomas role?

Gosling is oft compared to Reynolds. Watching the trailer (a rarity for me), I got the sense that Fall Guy is channeling the Free Guy that Reynolds did. Wait.... Fall Guy... Free Guy ... Fall Guy... WTF? The Ryans are at it again.

Can't hardly wait for this one. I expect gobs of inside Hollywood funny. I'm jazzed now.

I like Emily Blunt. I've only ever seen her in Edge of Tomorrow, but she was great in that role. And another example of what a strong and sexy woman ACTUALLY is... a REAL role model for girls and women, unlike what the Hollywood Machine wants in a role model for women. Obviously, this is why her role in Edge of Tomorrow was completely ignored by them.

I also love the fact she came out and said whenever she's handed a role that says "strong independent female" or something very similar to that she just throws it in the trash bin because she knows that it's going to be boring.

I'll probably see this just because she's in it and JSF's description of it sounds intriguing. Obviously, she didn't find the script boring, and it passed her Woke-O-Meter.

I've never seen Gosling in anything before. I can't imagine that anybody could actually duplicate Ryan Reynolds.

Geez... How old is Lee Majors now? I don't think I've seen him in about 15 years. Didn't he play Christopher Chance's dad in an episode or two of Human Target? That might have been the last time I've seen him. (Don't get me started on that show... The first season was awesome, then they needlessly Girl Powered the 2nd season right into cancellation).

I didn't love Free Guy, but I know JSF and my old man did. I think my dad watched it like 5 times while showing it to other people. I liked it. I loved the first half or so but felt that they could have done more with the premise and kind of fumbled it.

The old sicko traditional pervert Hollyweird is in trouble, indie US small studio movies like FNaF make money and all they can do is harass the creator and try trash him in articles

I thought a Japan movie 'Demon Slayer' was a unique happening but it is still happening today

SixString said it could be the first time in history where the top two spots in cinema were foreign films.

if Hollyweirdo dies, indie US studios will still make films in the past Canada would step up and so will foreign movie companies the next Godzilla, Spanish 'Valle de sombras', Salvador Simó 'Dragonkeeper' with Chinese animators, German Post Apocalypse movies, South Korean Badland Hunters

Watched The Shift when it came out. From Angel Studios. Lots of trailers for upcoming films from Angel.

So many that look very interesting, far better than any Woke Mind Virus garbage polluting cinema now - too many to recall them all, like I had started off planning to do.

Has anybody seen Dream Scenario starring Nicholas Cage yet?

I don't want to watch a preview because eventually I'm going to be watching that one with my old man and the less I know going into a movie the better.

Here's the blurb for it on IMDB:

A hapless family man finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. When his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom.

I think my old man mentioned he heard that it's supposed to be a mish-mash of modern social media pop culture/cancel culture and The Book of Job. He didn't know what the Book of Job was other than a story in the bible, but it's one of the very few I'm familiar with and I gave him the cliff notes version. We're both huge Nic Cage fans and this movie sounds pretty awesome.

In fact, I read that Nic Cage thinks this might be the best film that he's ever done. I know they all are supposed to say that when promoting movies, but I never considered Cage to be your typical Hollywood Actor and give his words a little more weight than most.

(and yes... I realized after I posted this here that this is the 2024 thread for films you're looking forward to and Dream Scenario came out within the last month. My bad, JSF. Don't go crazy on me bro!

I just thought of Dream Scenario after you mentioned The Shift, because when my old man and I were talking movies the other day he'd mentioned both of them.)

I watched it with my old man. It had some parts that made me laugh, especially since we've been saying for years now that somebody should put an all guys team together at one of the colleges and just destroy all the women college players, but we both agreed that had we written that movie it would have been a lot different than the one we saw.

I think they had a great premise but they didn't do what they could have with it.

First thoughts, only 10 seconds into the trailer...

I don't know why, but I'm immediately impressed and drawn to what I'm seeing. Having "Let's Dance" by David Bowie kicking things off in the background is not hurting the experience.

But then they mention "from the director of Kingsman".

Oh boy...

I'm hoping I'm not immediately disappointed by the rest of the trailer now.

Final thoughts on the trailer...

Thanks for sharing, JSF. That looks pretty damn amazing.

What a cast. And from the little I heard and how it was expertly used in the trailer, the promise of the possibility of a great soundtrack the likes we haven't seen since Guardians of the Galaxy came out back a decade ago.

...

Is this excitement for a movie release that I'm feeling? It's been so long since I've experienced this that I've forgotten what it felt like and I can't say for sure.

I hope the movie lives up to the expectations set up in that trailer. Making a good trailer itself is an art form and we've all been lied to many, many times before...

But maybe it's been long enough to finally let down the guard just a little and actually look forward to something coming out of Hollywood again.

Argyle could very well have the makings of an instant modern classic.

I didn't even know her background. Out of everyone in the trailer, she's the one person I didn't recognize and I wasn't even speaking of her when I mentioned how much I like the cast showing up in this movie.

Honestly, I'm always happy to watch Sam Rockwell in another flick.

I wouldn't focus too much on Dua Lipa. It looks to me to be a pretty "ensemble" cast.

From what I can see, I think that Bryce Dallas Howard would be the main character, and everybody else is supporting roles. I haven't seen her in much, but she did star in one of the best episodes of Black Mirror that Netflix made, and I thought she was great in that.

One of my favorite local theaters has been saying "upcoming listings" with Fall Guy for several weeks now - they must be as jazzed as I am. It comes out in May.

Believe it or not, yes and yes.

I know we've talked about Galaxy Quest before. Great flick. My old man finally got me to watch Green Mile during the summer and I really wasn't surprised how much I liked it since I've always known it was one of those movies that I should have watched but never had gotten around to.

And then to see my favorite artist show up 2/3rds of the way in as himself and not even mention his own name was fun.

Argylle comes out this weekend. Looking forward to seeing how it does in the Box Office.

Production Budget was a stupid $200 Million, so I'm already not too happy hearing that.

BoxOfficePro gives a 1st weekend prediction range of $13 to $21 Million and puts an actual $16.5 Million figure on it.

That's not good news at all. This could be the first major Hollywood flop of 2024, and by Universal who was the king of 2023 to boot. Why on earth would they spend $200 Million on this? They only had one film last year that cost over $100 Million, and that was the insane $340 Million they spent on Fast X.

When you spend $200 Million to make a movie, you need to gross HALF A BILLION worldwide just to break even.

Very bad decision on Universal's part here, and a very poor start to the year for them, whether this breaks even or not.

And honestly... what was that $200 Million budget even spent on other than the obscene paydays the actors get? Certainly not on special effects. That scene in the trailer with the cat flying up to the camera was pure cringe, and was the one thing that I would have left completely out of the trailer if I were making it.

Hopefully the movie is as good as the trailers make it out to be otherwise, and hopefully it gets a good international box office showing if the predictions at BoxOfficePro are correct.

Beekeeper came out on 12 Jan, and I was glad to see it.

The week before that, I saw The Painter listed, and it only had one showing per day in town. Hadn't heard about it. Checked the trailer, and it seemed almost like Beekeeper - which were along the lines of R.E.D. or John Wick-ish (minus the criminal underworld aspect). Didn't know anybody in it other than Jon Voight. I does have quite a few plot holes, poorly assembled script or maybe just lousy editing and transitions. But the worst part was the actress Marie A. who either is incapable of acting, or else the script was so horrible that it made her seem that way. Maybe she has just gotten by for years on her looks. Too bad, but they needed to get that released before Beekeeper. Possibly still better than the dreck from the last 3 months of last year. I'm not sure if higher production values would have saved this from the script.

I.S.S. This is out now. I started noticing this a while ago, seemed like Sci-Fi so I was interested. Seems like not so much sci-fi, just a setting. Seems more like harrowing cat-and-mouse. Might be a diorama film - one setting. Might be like Lord of the Flies, or Bielko Experiment, or Escape Room type story. I missed it last week, and now it is down to one showing per day in my area, so I'll need to struggle to shoehorn it in to my schedule.

I'll need to check out Argylle soon, maybe this weekend.

Magical Negroes seems to be out now, although the poster says it was only out in December. It is listed in Green Bay as "American Fiction"

VARIETY: Box Office: ‘Argylle’ Gets Caught in a Trap With Disappointing $6.5 Million Opening Day

Cat’s out of the bag — “Argylle” is shaping up to be the first high-profile box office misfire of 2024. The espionage action-comedy only saw $6.5 million in ticket sales from 3,605 North American venues across opening day and preview screenings. That is not a good start for a presumed crowdpleaser with a star-studded ensemble and a massive $200 million production budget.

Yup. Just as I suspected. Bummer.

Unless this does some mad business overseas, Universal has the first major flop of 2024 after being the king of 2023. Not a great start.

Stupid $200 Million production budgets are stupid. You get what you deserve.

Argylle posted a surprising $18 Million for the weekend after Bruce's prediction was all the way down to $12 Million based off of previews. But it only did $17 Million overseas.

$35,345,000 is the projected worldwide total for opening weekend.

That's only 17.5% of the Production Budget on opening weekend.

This movie is dead in the water. If nothing changes after the real worldwide numbers come in, and drastically, I'm wondering if Argylle will even be able to gross $100 Million before it's done.

This isn't quite "The Marvels" level flop, but it's going to make last years DC flops look good. A very bad start for Universal, the king of 2023. Hopefully this was their only $100 Million+ budget for the year. They did have both the Renfield and Fast X failures last year and still came out way on top, so it's too early to count them out. But we're looking at at least a $320 Million loss for Universal right now, if not closer to $400 Million on this one.

I liked this review. Not sure if I like it for this movie until I see it for myself, but I like the review.

Quote:

“Argylle” is a test balloon sent up by a major movie studio to see if we’ll accept AI in movies the way we’ve come to accept CGI. Do not fall for it.

But speak for yourself though... I don't accept CGI. I was blown away by it when Independence Day came out, but I grew tired of it long before it became cool to complain about CGI. They literally ruined the prequel to The Thing that they called The Thing with it.

Practical Effects are where it's at. CGI is to only be used sparingly. This is why Jurassic Park still holds up 30 years later and The Matrix looks like an outdated video game today. And none of the movies using CGI today are putting in 1/4 of the effort that they did with The Matrix.

It's not your imagination. CGI has gotten worse over the years.

Yeah... Looks like I was wrong about Argylle and I was suckered by a trailer for the first time in I don't know how many years. That'll teach me.

I ignored any video reviews from the usual hate-bait YouTubers, but I finally broke down and watch CriticalDrinker's review of it last night after seeing quite a few of the people I respect on YouTube calling it out.

It's very likely going to have its first sub-Million day this week on either Wednesday or Thursday. The only "exciting" thing left about this movie is seeing if it can even crack $100 Million worldwide on that $200 Million budget.

Mad props to the editor that put that trailer together. It truly is an artform in and of itself, and you managed to really get my hopes up that a decent movie was coming down the pike.

$6.5 Million on its second weekend in the US and what appears to be very little help Internationally. Typically, the International total doubles after the 2nd weekend because it's the 2nd weekend plus all 5 week days. If it doubled internationally it would have $34 Million international. It only has $31 Million international.

It's got just barely over $60 Million right now.

It's about a coin flip that it breaks $100 Million worldwide now, and even if it does it won't be by much.

This movie could lose $400 Million for Universal.

Japanese can put politics into a movie but it is more subtle, does not bash you with a political message

they in Japan export the movie to Western cinema and also somehow did it at a 16 million budget versus Hollyweird's 220 Million + budget with odd nasty weirdo political messages put into movies

Smile was good... mostly. Not pleased with the last 15 or so minutes of it. It was a lot better when they didn't show the monster.

I think I'll add Smile 2 to my list of movies I'm not looking forward to in 2024.

Here's what the director said about it:

Director Parker Finn admitted that he didn’t always intend to make a sequel. He told ComicBook.com: "For me, I never want to retread and just do something I've already done again. "I'd wanna make sure it was surprising and different and not what people were expecting after the first one."

Good luck to you, buddy. I think you already ruined the first movie with your ending to it. Don't have any idea how you're going to recreate that feeling from the first 4/5ths of the first movie after that.

$78.15 Million for Argylle now, with less than $5 Million over the 3-day part of the "holiday" weekend, and only $600k on cheap seat Tuesday.

We're only on Day 19, so it's still early in the run. I haven't been tracking the international take on this at all, but it seems to be almost a mirror image of the US box office plus a few points.

It's probably close to $90 Million by the end of next weekend worldwide.

If this flop gets 2 months in the theater before it is yanked, it will crack $100 Million... barely.

My dad was visiting my brother and their two choices for a movie were Argylle or Madame Web.

He asked me if I thought Argylle was worth watching or not. He really does like supporting the local family owned theater down there whenever he can. I told him they should go and see it. Though the audience scores aren't particularly high on it, the critics hated it and that's probably a good thing. And I also told him that reviews for it were pretty confusing and all over the map on this one, with people from both sides dunking on it for a myriad of reasons.

But despite what some of the regular hate-baiting YouTubers that I've called out several times here before have been saying, I didn't get the feeling that this movie was woke and it wasn't ruined with DEI agenda points.

So they went and saw it last night. They enjoyed it. He said that I was right and it wasn't woke at all. Though it's not going to make his list of favorite movies or anything, he said that it was worth a watch. He's a fan of Sam Rockwell too, and thought he was the standout character in the movie.

It's a shame that Universal screwed up so bad by paying $200 Million for their first two movies in 2024. I don't know exactly what went wrong in the case of Argylle, but even if it only cost Universal $100 Million to make it still would have been a financial disaster for them. Even at only $50 Million it likely would have lost Universal money.

The actors are getting paid way too much. Plain and simple.

It's time to stop that.
