This one fell on my radar only about 5 days ago when I saw it on The-Numbers. When I read the synopsis, it sounded like a pretty cool idea. From what I gather it's an alternate universe where all the computers did break down when the clock struck midnight.

Then I saw who was starring in it...

Rachel Zeigler

Damn shame.

It's an A24 movie that got a wider release than most A24 movies have gotten this far. 2,108 theaters for an A24 is really good.

But it only made $2,113,923 on opening weekend.

Right?

A24 put out Dream Scenario with Nic Cage on November 10th of 2023.

It opened in SIX theaters and made $220,035 on opening weekend, or in other words, it made more than 10% of what Y2K made even though it was only shown in 0.284629% of the theaters that Y2K was shown in.

Dream Secnario went on to gross $9,083,134 worldwide according to The-Numbers, but according to The Movie Database it actually grossed $14,114,415 worldwide and it had a budget of $10 Million.

That's really not something huge to brag about, but you have to rememember that A24 doesn't hardly spend anything on advertisements for most of their movies, and when you're releasing your movie on opening weekend in only 6 places, you didn't spend a dime on marketing. So basically, as long as that $5+ Million was more than enough to pay the theater chains for showing it, it at least made a few bucks.

I think this is bad for Rachel in more ways than one. A pincer attack, if you will.

On one front, she just starred in her 4th out of the last 5 movies she's been attached to that lost the studio money.

On the other front, I think she's already in a lot more trouble than people think if she's "stooping" to doing A24 horror movies with a total budget less than what she usually gets paid to do something. You need to remember this is the "Princess" that stood in the picket lines yelling into the microphone that if she's going to go out there wearing a dress all day than she damn well better be getting streaming residuals for every single minute that somebody is watching her movie.

So the fact that nobody went out to watch this has to reflect terribly on her today.

Short of a massive apology tour by her, which would also require a level of sincerity on her part that I don't think she's a good enough actress to emulate, I don't imagine we're going to be seeing too much more of Rachel in front of the camera after Snow White crashes and burns.

It's really a shame too. She's a cute girl otherwise. If she were making it in the middle of the 90's instead of the middle of the 2020's, she'd be America's sweetheart.

Remember Keri Russel and Felicity? She was just about as inescapable at the time as anybody from the cast of Dawson's Creek was. Take a look at her IMDB profile. She may have never made a name for herself like Meryl Streep, but I think she's had a pretty damn fine career that still doesn't appear to be slowing down as of 2024.

Rachel could have been 2020's Keri Russel. But like ItsAGundam would say, she "Girl Bossed to close to the sun".

I dunno...

The more I think about this, the more I think it's probably a lot easier for her to fix this than I'm making it out to be. Especially if she genuinely wanted to. (And I suspect she would genuinely want to if the offers dry up for a few years and she has some time to reflect on how privileged a position she has and learns to appreciate what had been given to her. That's called growing up.)

People have short attention spans and memories, and I don't think everybody enjoys being angry at everyone else all the time. I think we're shifting to a healthier version of society where we can finally start lowering the temperature again.

Everybody loves a good redemption arc.

And besides...

It's hard to stay angry at a cute woman when she starts saying all the right things to ya...

I am a little puzzled about Hollywood release dates.

During all of the hubbub about Rachel Z spewing anti-Trump hatred, never saw mention of Y2K. They kept talking Snow Brown.

Why did they wait until after the election to roll out the Trump haters?

The Order is trying to push the fable about Insurrection on Jan 6. Why wait until after the election to do that?

Are they just jettisoning the woke trash that they already wasted their money on? Are they pulling a Brandon "I told you so" to emphasize the stupidity of the imbeciles who greenlit all the woke trash?

I have not sussed this out yet.

I think they just still had a glut of woke shit, or at least a glut of movies that starred woke idiots, and they're in no financial position NOT to release these things and at least try to make a few bucks before they license the movies for streaming.

As far as this movie in particular, A24 heads must be aware of how toxic their lead was and they kept this one really quiet. I don't think this is what they were expecting going into it though, becuase like I said... how many A24 movies do you think opened in 2,100 theaters before? My guess is not many at all. Maybe Civil War did?

My guess is that after this, Rachel is never going to get another role with A24.

At $15 Million to make, Y2K will probably end up making money for A24 with streaming licensing, regardless of how low the final box office was.

A24 might be a loser on this movie, but they're winners in general just because of how they can run their business compared to the big guys. The Disneys and the Paramounts are super slow to move and make changes, while A24 can change their direction and hit the ground running with it.

A) With the exception of Civil War, they don't spend much on movies at all, and they do very little marketing compared to the marketing for blockbusters.

B) They didn't bother trying to make their own streaming service and they ACTUALLY make money after it's out of the theaters by being paid licensing fees to stream their stuff somewhere else. Something they'd all still be doing right now if everybody didn't make the disastrous decision to create their own streaming platform.

Ugggh....

It was a Jonah Hill "comedy" anyhow.

Maybe they were trying to break a record for the most reasons that a film is completely unwatchable here?
