New Power Suit Amplifies Human Strength

Quote:

Engineers in Japan are perfecting a wearable power suit that amplifies human strength to help lift hospital patients or heavy objects.

Driven by portable batteries, micro air pumps and small body sensors that pick up even the slightest muscle twitch, the Stand-Alone Wearable Power Assist Suit is designed to help nursing home workers lift patients of up to 180 pounds while cutting the amount of strength required in half, project researcher Hirokazu Noborisaka told LiveScience today.

(. . .)

A network of sensors track the wearer's upper arms and legs and waist-muscle activity, then relay the data to an onboard microcomputer that regulates air flow into a series of inflatable cuffs which expand to amplify lifting strength. The suit supports its own weight and carries a battery lifetime of about 30 minutes.

Apparently, so does Robert Downey Jr.

Kidding aside, Adam would be perfect to play Tony Stark. He's built like a superhero already, so imagine how he'd fill out the armour; he'd look like a friggin' mech stomping toward you.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Interesting. I figure in the next 10 - 15 years the military will have a suit like this for soldiers. The military applications of such technology will not be lost on the US military.

As to Robert Downey Jr playing Tony Stark in Iron Man, where is my barf bag? Adam would be perfect for the role.

I've got less of an issue with Downey being cast than I do with something else. After all, Tony Stark isn't *supposed* to be able to do superhero stuff without the suit. Adam looks like he doesn't need it. What bugs me is the budget. Reportedly $100 Million. Now really, does Iron Man need 2 and a half times the budget of Serenity?

$100 million budget? Wow. That is steep. I imagine a good portion of that will be for the suit and special effects.

Robert Downey Jr., arrogant SOB that he is, actually is a pretty decent actor. What remains to be seen is how the movie comes out.........these comic book movies seem to bat about .500--half are phenominal (x-men, spiderman, batman begins) and half are unwatchable (daredevil, hulk, batman and robin)....the huge budget is a mite unsettling, becuase it suggests more attention going to the effects than the story or character, which is the death of one of these movies.

Besides, everyone knows Wolverine is the baddest mofo in the 'verse! No suit of armor will put him down!

Given that it'll probably be very effects-heavy, and that the suit will be mostly CGI, then yeah, I'd say that's a fair ballpark.

Plus, Iron Man is an established character, with 30+ years of fans. And, it's a superhero movie, which tend to have fairly predictable returns. It's a safer bet for a studio to thrown a 100 mill at a movie they're pretty sure will make that much back, plus sell lots of toys and videogames and the like, than for them to put 100 mil into a big-screen version of a failed TV show, no matter how rabid it's (relatively) small fanbase may be.
