Other than the fact that both are poorly written and acted...yeah, clearly Firefly ripoffs.

A scene in Killjoys' pilot reminded me a lot of the scenes on Belleraphon in "Trash."

Dark Matter is really more like Stargate Universe than Firefly, other than Three, the guy who names his guns, being a lot like Jayne Cobb. Also, Five could be seen as a bit like River.

Funny. Here's what I wrote on facebook about two weeks ago:

SyFy Fridays - The night that FIREFLY built? FIREFLY has been off the for almost 13 years, but I think it's impact can now be felt weekly. DEFIANCE has been on for a few seasons and has its own identity, but I think there's no denying that the roguish captain in a sci fi Western setting owes at least a tip of the hat to FIREFLY (among others). KILLJOYS is the most obvious... so obvious that I will say only that, despite being about space bounty hunters, it took me seven reviews to find a reference to Boba Fett, yet every one spent at least a paragraph comparing the Quad and the 'Verse. Finally, we have DARK MATTER, the least obvious - but perhaps strongest - descendant. Given some of the plot twists, I won't say too much, but if you enjoyed FIREFLY (or, indeed, any intelligent sci fi), give it a try.

That's my thinking as well. Killjoys has more of a Firefly feel to it, I suppose, but I think both tend to draw inspiration from the Firefly 'verse.

And " 3 " in Dark Matter tossed out a classic " Thank you, Robot " , which HAD to be a nod to Lost in Space.

Some of the writing has glaring holes, but these are the early eps. Not every series can hit the ground running and hit on all cylinders.

I'm watching all 3.

Defiance took quite a story twist going into season 3, which I think is really interesting.

Killjoys has a smokin' hot babe ,Hannah John-Kamen, who plays 'Dutch'. She reminds me a lot of Claudia Black, though she's English, not Australian. Think of Inara, but instead of companioning, she trained as an assassin.

Dark Matter has potential, but at this point, I don't see how the whole crew can stay together. None has any allegiance to another, and anyone could jump ship or pull a Jayne and take over the ship. There's a classic ' whodunit ' vibe going on as well, as any one of them could be some sort of double agent.

I'm not watching DEFIANCE, but I would characterize DARK MATTER as "good" and KILLJOYS as "entertaining with potential to be more." Neither is anywhere close to the level of FIREFLY but both are watchable. They are, say, LEVERAGE to FIREFLY'S HUSTLE.

Of course I meant that other than our appreciation for Firefly, we don't share a lot of the same opinions about other shows. Since I am just barely tolerant of Killjoys and Dark Matter, I figured you might have a different take so it wouldn't hurt to check them out. As for Defiance, I gave up on that long ago.

Great stuff.

As for the Sci-Fi stuff, I really WANT to like Killjoys, but so far, they're ... idk how to put it, but using too many shortcuts ? Holes in their stories and plots. It really WANTS to be Firefly, but it's so far below the bar, I've given up all hope.

Dark Matter is still intriguing, w/ so many unanswered questions... locked big metal doors, unexplained dead kid in the cargo bay, who wiped everyone's memory, and the big one....

They aren't naming their episodes, just numbering, but it could easily have been called "Bushwhacked."

For every actual commercial last night there were at least three promos for other Syfy shows. Can they not get advertisers to invest in these time slots, or is it they just don't care enough to make more money so they can afford better shows?

I wish they'd lose their contract for broadcasting Twilight Zone so that TV Land could pick it up. They don't do it with all their shows, but certain ones are allowed to go past a 30 minute or hour slot with minimal edits.

In fairness, Syfy's not the only cable channel that butchers classic tv. MeTV airs original Star Trek episodes every day and entire scenes are cut out. They also edit Batman, Wonder Woman, Lost In Space, and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. I guess they figure that their younger viewers won't know the difference, and their older viewers won't remember what's missing. The funny thing is I have the uncut, commercial-free dvd sets for Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and many others, and I never watch them. But when they're on tv I can't resist.

And I also noticed the " episode " numbering, instead of naming. I guess that sort of coincides w/ giving numbers to the members of the crew, instead of them having names ?

Wonder if they plan on sticking w/ that through out the season, and then ( should they get another ) they'll start naming them next season, as well as start calling crew members by their names.

Curious, although not all that interesting.

Yep, I've kind of given up on SyFy a while back. They do nothing original and even the copies are putrid ripoffs. They know that they have a ready-made audience/devoted fans of Firefly, but they do not take the time to produce a quality show. The last quality show I watched on SyFy was Caprica, which was doomed to failure because it was a well produced and well written show (I have it on good authority that it is written into SyFy's contract that good solid shows are not within their purview).

Ripoffs are the norm today. The above-mentioned shows notwithstanding, we have another named Stitchers (we have ABC Family to thank for this latest fiasco, yes, ABC Family). It is a total ripoff of Fringe, and, like the others previously mentioned, poorly written, acted and produced - oh hell, let's throw in poorly directed as well. This is something I don't understand, regarding an ABC property, because they have all the money in the world (come on, Disney and Marvel) yet they come up with a poor excuse of a TV series. Their main motivation is that they want to capture the thousands, if not, millions of fans that loved Fringe.

Come on SyFy, have some respect for your audience, give us a quality show for a change, even if you have to ripoff a show like Firefly or Fringe.

Killjoys. Reference to Dutch as a 'warrior princess ' can either be seen as a nod to Xena, or imo, Wash's line about Zoe.

Both DM and KJ are moving along well, and it's kinda hard to tell which one I like more. Nice plot twists in both. Lotta potential here.

One odd thing about Dark Matter though, was a reference to a known sci-fi franchise , clearing putting that 'verse in our future, and not in some generic " space " story. There's clearly an 'Earth that was ( or still is ) ' thing now , which I wasn't aware of until this last ep.

Ok, maybe ripoff is too strong a word, but certainly Jamie Alexander's "Jane Doe" character, found naked in a duffle bag (girl in a box) with a wiped memory, sounds very familiar to Firefly fans. By the way, she has a particular set of skills (as the man said once in Taken), which even she is not aware of. Gero is a co-writer for SyFy's Dark Matter, so 'borrowing' bits and pieces of a familiar plot line could be called an homage. In this case, Firefly. Only time will tell if this latest "borrowed" thriller is any good.

The track record of one of the producers and one of the writers didn't exactly inspire confidence (once I looked into it). I'm only going to watch because of Jamie Alexander (She makes an impressive Lady Sif in the Thor movies), otherwise I would pass.

As an aside, I tried watching The Blacklist because of James Spader (and Harry Lennox), but sadly that did not capture my adventurous side, nor did it fulfill my need for quality entertainment. I'm almost afraid to take a peek at the New Heroes.

Jaimie Alexander... Lady Sif ... so THAT'S where I'd seen that face before!! Doh !

See, I was thinking less 'River ' and more 'John Doe' , when it came to the particulars of the main character. But yeah, 'girl in a box ' is a nice comparison as well.

I'm gonna stick w/ Blindspot, simply because the story line reminds me so much of John Doe, and as with our BDH, that series ended far too soon. Left off w/ a heck of a cliffhanger as well.

As for NEW Heroes, I lost track of the series when it was first on, so I am at a loss as to where everyone of the characters stood and how it all came to an end. I notice the Cheerleader isn't in any of the previews, but Hayden is busy with Nashville ( ? I'm guessing ) , so her character doesn't make it ... in the new series.

I was curious enough that I took a peek..................Dark Matter, and to be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I was right, but it was okay enough.
I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen next (although there was some stilted acting and somewhat cheesy production, it bothered me
that I found myself wanting to see more at the end of each episode.

There were similarities to Firefly, but just enough things different that
kept me watching. There was one shiny little star among the not-so-brilliant
and that was 2. I liked her - she was a cross between Zoe and the Captain, and not a bad actor. Okay she was good compared to the others, I believed
her. There, I said it!

Next thing you know I'm at the end of the season and gorram it, wouldn't you know - that was it. No more seasons. I actually cared that the season finished - go figure! By the way, I kinda liked the android too. So shoot me

I just started watching Dark Matter last night (3 episodes in). It’s clearly not Firefly level (nothing is), but I’m enjoying it more than I expected to. Episode Two kind of reminds me of The Train Job even. Moral quandaries about whether or not to help a small mining town. Very Firefly-esque theme. Personally, I think the acting is fine. The issue is that they’re not given the witty dialogue that Firefly actors got. In Firefly, you could be feeling the gravitas of high drama and still be laughing.

In a weird way, it actually reminds me of an adult version of Space Cases. Small motley crew of misfits with minimal direction on a mysterious spaceship trying to get answers with help from a quirky lady-android (who has a special link to the ship).

You too, huh!? Perhaps you have a point there about the dialogue, I found myself comparing it to Firefly throughout. No one, I mean no one will ever be able to capture that type of dialogue.

Still though, I couldn't help but like this show a little.

Just finished Dark Matter this morning. When I can refrain from comparing it to Firefly, I actually like it a lot. Here's what I think worked:

1. The Android is awesome. Starting with the episode where there's another android (trying to avoid giving too much away), she's maybe my favorite character. Five and Six are up there too.
2. Appropriate use of suspense with timely resolution. I hate JJ Abrams-style suspense where mysteries are held on to for so long and end up being lame. In Dark Matter episodes end with a taste of the next episode and always deliver.
3. Sweet villainous cameo late in the season.
4. At least once when Six starts the Marauder, he flips three switches on the ceiling.

In general, I think they did a great job creating complicated, interesting relationships. I love that there was a necessary element of distrust, but they still end up being a (weird, dysfunctional) family.

Also, as I'm writing, this I'm just recalling now that four is considered unlucky in some east Asian cultures because it symbolizes death...

Interesting nugget on the #4. Now I wonder if that was done on purpose by the writers. Would make sense.

I think there's near universal agreement that the android is a fan fav. Soooo many ways they can take that , character wise. Though some may just write android off as a rehash of DATA, from ST-NG, yet another mechanical humanoid device, longing to be a real boy / girl, what ever. I'm cool w/ her though.

Killjoys: I can't help but notice the discussion has left out the other series mentioned in the OP. Is there less enthusiasm for it than Dark Matter ? Is it simply less Firefly-like, and so it's not looked upon as fondly, or do folks just not care for it ?

Dark Matter is, like Firefly, similar to a lot of past SF. But both Firefly and Dark Matter are well done and have casts with chemistry. I like them both. The Expanse is another recent example of well done SF.
