I've always been curious about the British series Sapphire and Steel. But it's never played on tv for me to see it. I recently found the entire series on DVD at Best Buy. For those of you that know about this show, do you think it would be worth buying, since it seems like that's the only way I'll ever get to see it?

the movie is not the Series. Only the facts have been changed, to irritate the innocent; the names of the actors and characters remain the same

I'm disappointed that nobody else has chimed in on this thread. I've never seen Sapphire & Steel but, in a message (here on Fff.n) just a few months back, someone wrote such an eloquent review that I put it on my Wish List.

My Hubby and I just started watching this - I'm enjoying it, he's not.

Keep in mind this is a 1979 TV series w/ really low budget effects. We watched the first disc which is 6 episodes and I thought it was really intriguing concept and I want to see how it plays out.

However hubby was bored stiff so I likely will be watching alone.

If you happen to watch NCIS - Ducky is the Steel character! Was quite a surprise and rather fun to watch.

I'd really suggest Netflix or Blockbuster to try them out then you can buy if you do like.

I don't even remember what thread it was. But (just occurred to me) you might search this forum for "better than Firefly".

I've only seen one of the stories all the way through, but whilst it was BBC 70s effects, the story was kind of creepy (photos coming to life).

The pacing of the show suffers as many older shows do - and particularly since British shows are so much slower than the US variety anyway. Sometimes thats good, sometimes bad.

Personally, I wouldn't throw down a lot of cash sight unseen, as it is something of an acquired taste (the idea is fascinating, but I wasn't really taken with the execution). If you could rent, I'd do that - it doesn't appear to be on DVD, but it did make videos - but if you can play UK PAL videos then get the hell on over to ebay - there are about 20 or so on sale for what would be a few dollars plus shipping).

Just make sure you're not getting the audio adventures (they just started doing them, with David Warner as Steel and Susannah Harker as Sapphire).

Hope that helps

The series is defintely on DVD and available via Netflix - that's how I'm watching them - I think Best Buy has it for around $75 but I'm not too sure about the price.

Have to agree with you that the pacing is slow and execution is dated - but I'm looking forward to the next disc- with or with a viewing companion

The region 1 DVD was released @the end of last year. According to IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078682/ a DVD is also available in Britain (& Germany), and the VHS was never distributed in the USA.

The region 1 DVD (almost certainly region 2 as well -- it's too small a volume for different features) has commentary by the creator on Assignment I, part 1, and by the producer/director on Assignment II, part 1. May not seem like much in the way of special features these days, but pretty impressive for a show that's a quarter century old.

Okay. I've also been reading the reviews on Amazon.com and they've been pretty positive. Saying things like, "Thought provoking," "Intelligent horror as opposed to blood, guts, and gore," and "If you like Dr. Who, then you'll probably like this." It's been described as Dr. Who meets the X-Files, so that's favorable for me. I'm just not sure if I'm ready to plunk down my money (the one I saw at Best Buy was about $66) for something like this. I've bought movies before without ever seeing them, with varying results, but this is a little different. No sight of it at the All Sin City Store- er, excuse me, Blockbuster. Is Netflix as good as I've heard?

I love , no adore!!! Netflix.

I generally send/return 2 or 3 dvds on Monday and have all new ones Wed/Thurs so I'm set for my weekend viewing.

My husband and I easily were spending $80 a month on dvds - new and used: then realized we rewatch most of these maybe once a year. I view it as paying Netflix to store my dvds for me Seriously - we still buy dvds but nowhere near as frequently - if we buy just 1 dvd and rent the rest we're still ahead of where we were

I've changed my subscription as needed - anywhere from 1 disc to 4 at a time. Netflix has a great selection of exercise dvds so I try those out before buying - that saves a bunch of money there -- they offer TV series for rent which is a big one for us.

I've had 1 bad disc and I've been using them for about a year now. If you buy alot of dvds but don't rewatch them alot Netflix is great!

They almost always have a 2 week trial - they're worth giving a shot!

okay short answer - yes they are that good!
