Pitch me Battlestar Galactica!

Not literally you understand. That would damage the it; there'd be cylons sitting around crying, nursing their cracked craniums...

Anyway, in my hunt for a Firefly substitute, my attentions turned to New Battlestar. So I picked up the mini-series on DVD, to try and judge whether or not to get season one... and I'm afraid i'm still undecided.

I did enjoy the mini-series; very cool and an epic scale, if a little cold.

But I still don't know if I wanna shell out the money for the boxset. So this is a plea to all BSG lover (and haters if you feel the need) to adise me on this matter; tell me what's good and what's not and I will be in your debt.

IMHO, I think you'll get more of the same from season 1 as you got from the mini-series. In fact, it's hard for me to differentiate between them now. I would say the mini-series is possibly a little bit 'grittier' and the first season develops story a bit more. So it depends on how much you liked the mini-series. If you liked it, go back for more!

Agree w/Sickdude. It remains surprisingly consistant in tone and 'grit'. The 'cold' you refer to remains, for the most part, but the characters become a little more tangible. I'd say go for it, the production values are quite good.

On the other hand, how about Dark Angel? That was almost as good as Firefly (well...close, anyway), and I still like it better than anything else (besides FF, of course).

Do what I did, get both!

Big fan of the original here, and one that scoffed at the changes at first, but what the frak, it's well done, and different enough that they can be seperate entities in my head...

On the OTHER hand, I bought the mini-series and instantly knew I'd buy the series on availability. If you're unsure after seeing the mini-series yourself, you got to ask yourself just exactly HOW much you liked it. Would more of the same be to your liking?

I think the first season is a noticeable improvement over the already solid miniseries. With the premiere, the show moves from good to brilliant.

Things only get darker and more complex from here on out - I don't know if you'd consider that a recommendation or not, but I love it. Nothing is taken for granted - fuel, water, political stability, loyalties between characters - nothing is safe. Every episode seems to up the dramatic ante by adding significant new developments. The show NEVER returns to 'status-quo' at the end of the hour - something is always left irrevocably changed.

Battlestar Galactica is, in my opinion, a more-than-worthy successor to Firefly. It carries the torch in admirable fashion, taking it to places I've never seen on TV before.

Hope that's not over-hyping it too much for ya.

IMHO, Battlestar Galactica is the best show on TV right now. Dark, dark story with lots of well-executed plot twists, deeply complex characters, strong acting, strong production values and innovative look (thanks to Zoic!). The first season had a few weak episodes, but for the most part was consistently strong, on par with the mini-series. Most shows take a while to find their footing - Firefly being the happy exception. The second season has been fabulous. I look forward to Friday nights, and find I'm on the edge of my seat, engaged, touched, elated and devasted, all in the course of an hour.

BTW, I was a Huge fan of the first series when it originally aired. This show is an entirely different creature. I enjoy it for what it is, not in comparison to the original.

It's hard to imagine Firefly fans not liking Battlestar Galactica. The same human qualities, and lack of cliche characters, that made us fall in love with the crew of Serenity are there aboard Adama's big old boat.

The arc is gripping, the grittiness jagged and raw, and most important, we care about what happens to the last remaining humans in the universe.

A big part of the show's look and feel is Zoic's FX. The acting is believable, natural and compelling. The issues taken up mirror the ones we deal with here on Earth in the early 21st Century -- some metaphorically, most in actuality.

In short, make the time investment on Battlestar Galactica -- you'll be surprised how quickly that time flies.

How's it fixed for action? I thought the mini series was pretty sparse on action, though having said that, the climactic space battle was worth the weight; graceful, almost balletic, and with an awe inspiring scale. Plus, Starbuck's rescue strategy? Genius.

I enjoyed the campy fun of the original series - mainly for the eye candy not the writing or production values.

The new series is the finest television in production today. It doesn't get better than BSG and I've not missed an episode yet.

I have the first season on DVD but am looking for the mini-series.

BUY IT. Don't miss your chance to indulge in the best storytelling this side of the 'verse.

Well I just had a buddy buy me the first season on DVD and I am about half way through it.

It's more of a duty bound TV show at the moment. It's fallen prey to a few cardinal sins of the medium too in my opinion, but it's engaging enough. However there aren't nearly enough space battles!!! Considering they are at war with the Cylons! So far the Cyclons appear to be uninformed of this...

However a tip of the hat to the ever watchable James Olmos - who practically creates a vaccumm around him with his extraordinary presence! (Dude should get and Oscar, or Emmy or whatever the award is for TV)

But really the characters haven't moved on at all since the mini series and they're really stringing out some key, what I presume will be, shocking revelations.

So y'know it's beautifully put together and like Firefly, an exponent of the shakey camera, and crash zoom movements (Which must make poor old Joss roll his eyes!) all of which make it an intensly watchable and cerebral Sci-fi show.

Cool. Keep us posted on your thoughts.

I thought the first season was good, with an freakin' amazing final 2 episodes. If it seems slow at times stick with it, so far the second season is even better. The first 7 episodes of the second season are really just the second half of the first season (if the first season had been a whole 20 episode). Everything is connected and gets more complicated and interesting. And I love the characters. It is the best sci-fi on TV today.

Four episodes in on the first day.... MUST ration them better, make it last longer. This was the same trouble I had with Firefly. Speaking of which, and I never thought I'd say this, but if it continues at this level of quality, it might just possibly maybe begin to approach that show.

For answers to these questions and more, might I suggest the Battlestar Galactica podcast by Exec Producer Ron Moore. It's a free download from iTunes Music Store (and probably from scifi.com). They run about 45 minutes, so will give you a reason to turn off your DVD.

So, I seek opinions. I'm old enough to remember the first incarnation of this show, and to think it was cheezy and too silly to endure--so much so, in fact, that I've not found myself able to give this version even a chance. I'm hearing a lot of praise heaped on it; enough that I'm willing to pick up the mini-series on DVD and give it a try, but not enough that I'm willing to gamble on buying the whole first season.

The primary opinion I seek is this: will the mini-series be representative enough that I can base my decision to see more on it, alone? By default I hate watching television, so I'll be a pretty hard sell.

The mini-series IS a fair representation of the show as a whole; it's hard to imagine there being any time at all between the filming of the mini-seris and season one- in terms of effects, scope, script, story and all around quality the two are consistent.

Plus, in a move that our man Whedon probably wouldn't approve of, season one continues pretty much directly from the mini-series, with nought but a "Previously On..." segment for newcomers.

I never saw the original series, but I keep hearing about the Limburger Factor (that's a cheese joke, for all you non-dairy fans). This showhas no such problem; the performances are very well realised and rounded out. Everything is very logical, with nothing omitted as the colony struggle to find water and other neccessities, deal with the aftermath of a genocide, politically intrigue against each other, and struggle to establish order.

I'm only four episodes into season one (plus the mini-series) and I feel confident making these assertions! I recommend you get the mini-series first and make your call from there.

Keep watching the new series, and you'll get a taste of what the original series could have been if it had better writers.

I loved the original too, although it suffers now, much the same way the original Star Trek does with its inclusion of 70s culture. Granted, down the road, the "oughts" culture reflected in this re-envisioning of BG will probably take its toll, but that's not what will preserve this series.

The new BG is showing the very vulneral human side of the tragedy of war and the loss of not just one homeworld but twelve. It's reflecting the sorrow and survivors guilt felt by some of us after 9/11. It's also taking the old episodes and re-working them - I've already seen "The Lost Warriors", "Planet Zero" and we're about to see the return of Commander Cain - as a woman AND an admiral, which means she outranks Adama. Now THAT's drama.

I can't wait to see what happens next!

Pesonally, I would have LOVED to seek Dirk Benedict from the original series as Caine. Now that Caine's been girlified, I'd settle for a very Starbuck-like captain or pilot of one of the ships. And I mean Starbuck as HE was, as well as SHE is, of course.

I'm quite surprised the mini-series alone wasn't enough to make you a complete Battlestar drooling fool. It sure made me into one. I find BSG to be the perfect tonic for the Firefly-less period between the BD series and the BD movie.

If you can get a hold of the BSG season one episode called "33" and watch it... that should be enough to nudge you into the realm of the devoted fan. IMHO, "33" is to Battlestar what "Hush" is to BTVS... what "Out of Gas" is to Firefly. The most surprising thing about "33" is that it is the FIRST ep after the mini-series... that's like a grandslam in the first inning!

The show, in my mind, has not lagged once since I've been watching it.

Spinland, Yes the mini-series is 'representative'. In fact it's hard to tell which episodes were mini-series and which were season 1. And yes, the new show is worth it. I also loathed the cheesiness of the first show. When I heard they were remaking the series, I thought "Oh great, just what we need. Why can't we get serious SF?" Well, I was wrong. This new series has almost NO similarities to the original in terms of feel or such. Try it, you'll like it!

Plus, as an added bonus, the show has the aspect of just getting better and better as you go.

I liked the original a lot as well, and didn't much care for the mini-series. But my brother got me a boxset of the new BG. I even thought about exchanging it for something else, but he said to give it a chance. Plus Entertainment Weekly put it on its Must-List, so what the frak, I sat down and watched it.

The first 3 episodes were just like the mini-series--detached, gray, and tolerable, but unengaging (at least for me). Then it picked up a little with some well written and well acted character drama. I've just seen the 6th episode of the season, and I am now looking forward to watching more.

I don't think it is nearly as good as Firefly or Dark Angel (yet), but it looks like it deserves a second chance, even for someone who didn't find the mini-series appealing.

I did not like the original series either, and *putting on the flak jacket now* put it on the same cheese factor shelf in my head as Lost in Space.

I saw the previews for the mini and thought it looked really fine (hankering for more FF, of course). Haven't missed an ep yet, and I can hardly wait till I see the first commercial for season 3. It has everything I like to see; a long steep arc for every element, a depth of character and emotion portrayed using well crafted dialogue, extreme visual density, interesting and unusual sound, riffing on real world events...what did I miss? Fabulous FX, humor, Serenity showing up in the first tippy tip of the iceberg (so I guess that means I'm also looking for a depth of post-modern self reflection and humor), and it has me reflecting on it later.

Shows like this (FF, Deadwood, Dead Like Me) have me hoping that maybe the telexecs are finally beginning to realise that there are markets out there beyond the largest # of idiots market they're usually trying to capture. And ya know, hope is the thing that gives you feathers!

The single thing I don't like about the show is the doctor. I hope they find him an arc with a little more depth to it soon. He keeps playing the same 5 note tune a little too loudly and tunelessly for me (anything for my Cylon babe) and reminds me painfully of Dr Smith in the cheese factor cited above. It must be harder to write the 'betrayer' character than any other, because he/she is so seldom well done.

Now I will go back and give the original version a second chance (aaaak with the togas and the Loren Greene and the poorly ripped Greek mythology). I plan to do that during season 3, and have a friend who has the outrageously packaged DVDs and will be happy to watch them with me. Yippie for the company.

Like a lot of people, I was a big fan of the old BSG series and was annoyed greatly when it got cancelled way back in The-Past-That-Was. I've heard so many good things about the new Battle Star Galactica, and its tempting to check out this new show. Everytime I'm in the video store, I see the new show in its DVD box, I go over to pick it up and look at the cover, but something stops me every time.

I've decided that it would be a big mistake for me to watch it, I know its good show, but I CAN'T watch it; Isnt that strange behavior?

Have any of you ever had this kind of behavior happen to you?

Personaloly, I thought the new show was (and is) well made. I just picked up season 2 (I know, I know, some say it's only half a season, but Hey...there's only so much good sci fi out there)

In the mini series, when Rosalyn finds out she is ill, there appears to even be a firefly class ship flying by out her window....very cool...

It is a very serious and well defined show, which is absolutely great for some people, and a little off-puting for others. I do think it is a show that any sci-fi fan can appreciate, even if it isnt as loveable as our Firefly or Farscape. The characters do develop, and it certainly has a decent storyline, but I do not find endearing in the least. I dont believe that is a bad thing though, I think that is just what type of show it is, and I think it is fine if it stays that way. I just cant say Ill ever put it on my list of best sci-fi ever.

The cgi company that did the grapics for Firefly also does the effects for Battlestar. So yes, that is acctually an easter egg nod to Firefly. And that is also the reason why the effect shots in both Firefly and Farscape appear to be done by a hand held camera, same style because of same company.

For I SciFi show, I think it's worth watching it.
The CGI is not bad. The way the camera moves reminds me a bit of Firefly and the actors are great, with a special mention for the girl who plays #6,the deadly beautiful cylon (key-word here beeing "deadly").

And the second season is as good as the first one (which is not always the case with tv shows).

I'm dying to be Friday to view the new episode.

I love BSG. I never watched the original, so this was pretty much a brand new show to me, and I think if Richard Hatch gives it his seal of approval by being on the show, I think it's just another way to settle the gulf between the shows.

That said, I really really enjoy it and I love the drama and the amazing cast. It's about survival, and people making the best out of their situation, and finding other people around them in the same situation, and of course, finding them worth living and fighting for. I especially enjoy the father/son relationship (or lack of) between the Adamas.

BSG is one of the first real "series" to come along in a while, where you don't really get a standalone episode. Every episode has something very crucial to discover.

Like agentsun, I also never watched the original series, so I don't know what I missed. Recently got into Galactica, though, and have to say I think it's pretty cool! I went on a Galactica marathon over the weekend and finished the mini-series and the whole of Season 1.

Of course, I like the world of Firefly better. But still ... Galactica wasn't as bad as I thought it was. Like I said, thought it was pretty cool. Love Dr. Baltar!

I'm waiting for Season 2 episodes from my friend so that I can catch up with the rest of the world.

A seventies cheesefest- if you're not a fan already, there's no reason to see it, other than for John Dykstra's impressive optical effects. The new one is hands down the better series.

GLOBLABSURDITY

I agree with the cerebral comment and the "cold" comment in regards to the new Battlestar G. I'm a fan of the old series in regards to the humor element involved in the stories. The new Battlestar is interesting--yet having watched a few episodes--I feel as I've been watching 'Days of Our Lives on Battlestar Gallactica'. Soaps leave me cold. I've had to make myself sit through the episodes I've watched. Sorry. Not a fan. *sheepish grin*

Totally agree with you globlabsurdity.

I was bought the first series and while I enjoyed it to a certain extent I wont be bothering to buy the next season. Which is telling in itself.

The feeble way in which they keep the blonde lady coming back really irritated me. That's the cylon one not 'starbuck', she, starbuck, should be let out the airlock for starters!

Yes, absolutely! I can imagine that a holiday season, for instance, on Battlestar would last for at least 12 episodes. Slow. *snore*. Perhaps it's just my ADD comming into play. Ha!
