The magazine The Advocate had this on last month's cover, over a picture of Brandon Routh in the costume, and in it, it explored the 'bold queer attitude' of the new wave of superhero films.
I thought this might make for a lively discussion.
What do you think?

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Nonsense! Superheros have always worn spandex. Not like his costume is pink now or anything! Now that would be a "bold queer attitude"! A purple spandex costume with a pink triangle symbol and matching cape! Oh that would be great! Maybe I'll try to photoshop that!
Anyway, no, I'm sorry, I don't see a lot of difference between the "old" and "new" superhero movies except the actors are different and the effects are better.
And actually, if you think about X-men, they are actually a bit less gay; bypassing bright spandex for dark and servicable leather. At least in Wolverine's case.

There have been rumors that Brian Singer wanted to find an closeted gay actor to play Superman and have that person "come out" after the movie debuted...he has stated in the past that his hero movies have intentionally had gay overtones...my question is, why? Did Brokeback Mountain have superhero overtones?

Well Batman the series tried to be very gay, and admitted to that years afterward, and were smacked down by the censors, told to under light their crotches, and stand farther apart amoung other things.

None the less they are still remembered as being gay.

Has anyone watched the old superman cartoons? It's all about Lois Lane! She's out catching bad guys shooting machine guns flying airplanes! All superman does is say this looks like a job for superman and goes a rescues her when she's in touble. It should be called The Adventures of Lois Lane because superman is just a sidekick. Oddly enough Lois Lane gets lamer as the years pass. So in conculsion Superman isn't homosexual he's just boring!

No one hurt me please it's just my opinon and observations.

And on the topic of Superman there is a certain parallel between the secret identity of Clark Kent and the closeted life style that untill fairly recently almost all gays had to lead. A man who in his normal life must hide his true identity from everybody he knows but when donning the tights is free to be who he truly is.

Well that's sweet!
I thought it was a bit big and bright; with me posting all the time it got overpowering on some threads, so I went for a smaller, cuter icon sig.
I do love my old one, though, just cuz I'm so proud of making it. Not like it's gone forever; it's easy to bring back! And I do still bring it out for special occasions like a new Forsaken thread or people asking me to.

As for leather not being gay; I think there are a few bikers who would tell you why it isn't. Plus, it's only the skintight pants I was thinking of; the X-men (movie X-men, wasn't talking about any of the comic books) almost have leather armor. Doesn't look like clubbing gear, y'know.
But hey, maybe there are overtones and that's ok too! I'm just saying, if there are there it's nothing new or "bold". Maybe people are just seeing it a certain way now. I like the secret identity/closeted parallel; very nice.

Anyone seen the movie and think Superman is a little creepy? I'm not that into Superman (more Spiderman and Batman), but I REALLY LIKED this movie. But there are some things I notice now as an adult that I didn't notice when I was a kid. Ok, I always noticed Lois is completely lame in the movies. Hard to see how she's supposed to be so strong, capable, and intelligent (not a Whedon woman).

Maybe a little spoiler here, but nothing big you couldn't guess from the trailer.

So, having a guy float outside your house and watch you with his x-ray vision? Uh, that's completely stalker. Not cool, even though he's hot. And the "let me show you something" flight after she basically says she wants to stay with her new (dependable) family also seems like something a nice guy wouldn't do. That one might be splitting hairs, but the thing that bugs me actually comes from the end of the 2nd move. The roofie-kiss. If nothing else, Joss has taught us that erasing someone's mind is never a good idea.

Don't let me give anyone the wrong idea. I really did love the movie. I'll probably see it again and buy it. Highly recommended.

Chill out, dude.

Yeah, Superman certainly seems to have stalker tendancies. As the website says, he's a bit of a dick, too. I mean, I get it. What's the saying? "Absolute power corupts absolutely." Plus there was that whole his planet got blown up and his real family is dead.
Something that bugged me about Smallville was that Lex, who evolves of course into a villian, was a really nice guy and a good friend. Sure he had his dark side, too, had to, but damn he was a good friend! And Clark is an ungrateful and undependable dick. I thought it was just the WB writers, but no, now I find there was some precedent for it. Heh.
Well really, though, how could it be interesting if he had no character flaws? It's not like he ever loses a fight or anything.

Don't forget about him being a dead beat dad. What's he owe, about five years of child support?

I honestly didn't think he was creepy but I did have a few laughs with the guys I was with on this subject.

The whole gay thing is pretty damn stupid. Back when the character was created there wasn't exactly a large outed gay community in the U.S. so no one looked at things the way they do now. As for the costume, what is acceptable for a superhero? Should he wear a suit or maybe jeans and a tee? Think I'll go with Bryan Singer's answer to the "is he gay question" and say "he isn't". Why do so many gay people believe everyone is gay?

THAR BE SPOILERS HERE MATEY!!

OK, I'm still trying to figure this Superman/gay thing, despite the way Superman is portrayed. Let's go thru this checklist:
Did Clark Kent talk/ask about Lois Lane? Check.
Did Clark seem upset when he found out that Lois had a child and live-in boyfriend? Check.
Did Superman go to Lois' house at night to see her in her house (very stalker-ish, I agree). Check.
Did he give her (another) bird's-eye view of the city? Check. (Trying to remember the first Superman movie. Was it the city?)
Did he almost give her a kiss on the lips (only to be stopped by her)? Check.
Does he chase after a major hottie? Check.

(SUPER SPOILER AHEAD):

Select to view spoiler:

And last, but not in the least, did we find out that he has a son with Lois? Check.

I kinda think some gay writers were projecting some wishful thinking here, and the other men who think Superman's gay may be ready to come out of the closet soon.
The other possibility is he's bi-sexual. Yes! That's it! He's after Lois' boyfriend!!!!!!
But gay.
Nope.
D'uh.

Just my two cents.

I had the Mallrats discussion with my brother after the movie!

Select to view spoiler:

He figured Lois got impregnated when Superman gave up his powers in the second movie, thus she was capable of having his child. But Superman's powers weren't completely gone so the kid inherited some. This is one of the memories Superman would have erased with the kiss. Eeew! Imagine what a shock that would be - finding out you had Superman's kid when you had no memory of sleeping with him. I believe it happened some other time.

I agree Superman is a deadbeat dad. He seems to think it's ok that some rich, clueless guy raises his son while he just pays occassional visits. Yeah, that's healthy. And I get the sense Lois really thought the boy was Richard's son. So she was sleeping around? If she knew it was Superman's son did she shop around the Daily Planet looking for a rich dad?

I guess flaws are what make characters more interesting and easier for us to relate to.
