For those of you who know who Niel Gaiman is, one of his most popular graphical stories has been made into a film.

Stardust will be in theaters Aug 10. I am very much looking forward to it. If you have the time before August, I recommend reading the graphic novel.

I've long stated that the 4 greatest storytellers of my time have been Niel Gaiman, Joss Whedon, George RR Martin, and Frank Herbert. It's great to see Gaiman represented on the big screen.

LWAVES

I'd heard a while ago that they were making Stardust but I never realised that Robert DeNiro, Claire Danes and Michelle Pfeiffer were in that cast.

Looks beautiful but I do wonder what changes will be made from the original story.

I agree Singate, if only they could bring Sandman to a screen of some sort, altough I don't think a film would do it justice - maybe a long mini-series or a full one-off season, everything needs to be compacted too much for the cinema. SFX are so good for TV these days the visuals wouldn't be a problem.
If only......

America loves a winner!

I hear this will blow most folks away. I don't know much about the story, only what I see from trailers, but critics I hear are raving about this flick. Hope it pays off.

SINGATE

I went to see this earlier today. Having not read the book I didn't have any preconceived notions about the way things should be. That being said I did expect the story to be entertaining given that it was written by the incredibly talented Mr. Gaiman. I was not disappointed, a splendid fairy tale. A simple story with familiar themes masterfully woven together.

The film itself is quite beautiful. The settings, costumes, makeup, and CGI all do a fine job of creating a magical fantasy realm.

At first I was apprehensive with some of the casting. In particular Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer. I figured this was some exectuive's heavy handed way of getting recognizable actors into roles they had no business playing. I am more than happy to admit how wrong I was on both counts. It didn't take long for me to stop seeing Pfeiffer as pretty face pretending to be bad and start regarding her as an evil, vicious witch. It did take a little longer for De Niro to convince me but after the revelation about his character he had me completely on board. He practically steals the show with very little screen time.

The only drawback in the film is the same thing that plagues so many books which become features. There simply is no way to boil a novel down into a 2+ hour movie. Since I haven't read the book this is all conjecture on my part. I felt that some transitional material was left out forcing the film to cut very quickly between the many characters in the story. At times the pacing was a bit jagged but not so much as to be a terrible bother.

If there's anyone out there that can make a proper comparison to the book I would really like to hear about it.

LESATHER

I saw the film on Friday and loved it. It has been a while since I read the book, so I knew the basic story, but wasn't over-burdened with a lot of "oh they cut that" or "that should have been done this way". I was able to enjoy the film for what it was. I really enjoyed Charlie Cox and Claire Danes together.

My only complaint has been in how the US distributers have been marketing it. Lots of focus on the fact that it has big name stars like Michelle Pfeifer, Ian McKellen, Robert De Niro and Peter O'Toole. With the exception of Pfeifer all the rest were relatively minor roles, but it is made to look like they are what the film is about (if you don't know the story).

Haven't read the book, enjoyed the movie. De Niro was having way more fun than should be legal (I love movies like that, where you can tell the actor's having a blast. It really comes through on screen).

I'm gonna miss the Seven Ghost Brothers. They were a lot of fun.

Only things that bugged me were the "things that non-experts wouldn't notice." The tireless, immortal, and non-eating horses that are used as motorcycles (I'm not a horseman, but it's been pointed out to me, and now I always notice it). The "unicorn" (they don't look like horses, they look like deer), and the "voodoo doll ex machina" (poppets are not just carried around and assigned to a subject as needed; there's a very involved series of steps and spells that must be done to create one).
