Now I am learning about scary.

I've seen several trailers for the "Tin Man" miniseries on Sci-Fi but I haven't heard any buzz about whether it will be worth watching or not. I'll probably give it a try, but has anyone heard anything about this series?

Any thoughts/comments before it begins?

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I've read two reviews so far:

Matt Roush at tvguide.com - http://www.tvguide.com/Roush-Review/071128-11

The Boston Herald - http://www.bostonherald.com/entertainment/television/reviews/view.bg?a

I'll still probably check out some of it at least. I mean, can it be any worse that The Wiz?

Ouch. Those don't exactly inspire confidence, do they? I might give it a chance, but my expectations will be lower than they were before.

Thanks for the response!

I watched the dope about it on Sci-Fi's website a couple of days ago..It looked good , but I really like those 'Deschanel' ladies..Zooey is real , real cute...Her sister ain;t bad either...

And one of the male leads used to be on 'Boomtown' . a show that I liked because it was non-linear , kinda like 'Out Of Gas'...

My impression was that it was an original and inventive take on the Wizard of Oz , updated for our times...

YMMV , of course...

Well I thought it looked like it would be good, although those reviews have me thinking twice. I'll probably tune in Sunday but the Heros finale is going to trump it on Monday.

Saw the ads for it, and it looks kinda interesting. I'm not such the fan of the Wizard of Oz, but the imagary of of this version looks really neat.

But then something really started to bother me. 'Dorothy' character was looking familar to me, but I couldn't place just where I'd seen her before. Then I thought she looked like BONES star, Emily Deschanel, who I'm quite attracted to. But this wasn't her, she looked too young, or something....Turns out, there's a reason why she looks like her....it's her youner SISTER ! Zooey Deschanel! How gorram cool is that ?

She's like a younger version of Bones! How cute is that ??

Item 1-- Yeah, Zooey Deschanel ( and I probably didn't spell that right.)is in it. And since I've got a dirty old man crush on her, I'd watch it for that reason alone.

Item 2- In the L A Times the other day, there was a review, and a feature story with pictures. The reviewer liked it, the feature had some interesting ideas, and the pictures looked like an early 50's detective movie. All good reasons to watch.

Part 1 wasn't bad but I would hesitate to call it great, guess that leaves it somewhere in the middle.

I really liked the reimagining of Oz, now called the O.Z. as well as the changes to the main characters. Particularly impressive was the new version of the Tin Man. His heart being gone in the metaphorical sense is an inspired touch. That punishment he suffered was diabolical.

The CGI was a bit dicey which is to be expected from just about every Sci-Fi Channel project. While the static objects looked quite good anything requiring movement came off as very fake. Central City was impressive, kind of reminded me of Dark City. The flying monkeys weren't too bad but those creatures chasing "the gang" through the forest were terrible.

Most of the actors do quite well with their characters, which leads me to my main criticism. The girl playing DG seems to be out of her element. I don't know if it is her lack of experience or if she is not connecting with the character. It's not that she is doing an altogether bad job, more like she is slipping into then back out of character at random.

Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.

Zooey Deschenal was in Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy (movie not tv series / radio series) and was good but I liked her best in Big Trouble, which was very funny and yet hardly anyone ever saw it.

It also featured Patrick Warburton, who was the tick, which was created by Ben Edlund who wrote.....Jaynestown.

So far I’ve liked it, mostly because I’ve enjoyed picking out the allusions to the original. I love the way they have deconstructed the original fairy tail into a quasi-realistic rendition. Similar to how the new BSG created a story that mimics the original just faintly enough to make you feel as if the original might have been telling you the mythic fairy tail of a long ago “true” story. The “Cowardly Lion” not so much cowardly as empathically connected to the world around him. The brainless scarecrow a former diplomat whose brain was removed, yet somehow continues to live and think - somewhat of a too literal interpretation in my opinion. The “Tin Man” is now a “tin man” or former police officer whose torture in a tin suit (of all things) has left him bitter and angry. I’m not really sure how the Tin Man became the titular character, when he’s not really even the central character.

That role falls on DG (an allusion to Dorothy Gale) who appears in pigtails and a blue gingham dress only briefly. The rest of the story she is an emotionally detached tomboy, although she does sport those dazzling blue eyes and dopey expressions like Garland herself. She has a somewhat dreamy personality, which worked well for her as the dimwitted Trillion in the Hitchhiker's Guide, but I’m not sure she really pulls off enough emotion to play Dorothy.

The wizard is played by the veteran Dreyfuss. The character does a great job of capturing a man who is both powerful and crazy.

The special effects are excellent. Some of the best I’ve seen in any Sci-Fi show. They do appear clunky at times, but they are first rate.

Zooey, while younger, has a much bigger resume of film work than Emily. I liked Zooey in Bridge to Terabithia and love watching Emily on Bones.

Azkedellia is essentially the Wicked Witch of the West. She is now the ruler of the OZ, and the Queen is the Good Witch of the North. I’m not quite sure about the Wicked Witch of the East, that Dorothy killed upon coming to Oz. If there was a reference, I missed it.

There is also a Good Witch of the South, but I haven’t seen a reference there either. Although, the Good Witch of the South is a pretty minor character and is often omitted.

I'm wondering if ths will be on the Space Channel (Canada) Sounds like something I could get into.

Btw, just so those of you who may find the Hollywood rendition of OZ to be candy canes and starshine, the book, Baum's original, is quite dark.

For instance the three main characters (Scarecrow, Tinman, and The Lion) aren't as happy go lucky in the book. Been a while since I read it but at one point I think both The Tin Man and The Lion killed. (for the lion it was a large spider, which he then regretted killing. Lot of remourse in those scenes) He wasn't a rube like the movie portrays him.

And The Emerald city only looked green AFTER you put on special glasses that basically made everything look green.

And when they went to kill the witch Dorothy was caught and turned into the witches slave who had to tend to her, cook her meals, and clean her house (it wasn't a sprawling castle).

And the with herself was made very ugly by giving her only one eye which (if I remember correctly) she was able to use as a seeing eye.

One other point (and I think those who know the background on the movie) it wasn't Ruby Slippers, but Silver. The studio's made them into ruby slippers because it just had more impact and they looked nicer on screen.

Like I said, been a looong time since I read it so I could be wrong in some aspects.

Now, imagine if they did a remake of The Wizard of Oz, but Frank Baum's version. And NO singing. I think parents would freak out a bit.

"But it's supposed to be a children's story.

Actually, the silver slippers (as well as most of the story) are a political allegory, the way I understand it.

Quote:

Many of the events and characters of the book resemble the actual political personalities, events and ideas of the 1890s.[1] The 1902 stage adaptation mentioned, by name, President Theodore Roosevelt, oil magnate John D. Rockefeller, and other political celebrities.[1] (No real people are mentioned by name in the book.) Even the title has been interpreted as alluding to a political reality: oz. is an abbreviation for ounce, a unit familiar to those who fought for a 16 to 1 ounce ratio of silver to gold in the name of bimetallism, though Baum stated he got the name from a file cabinet labeled A-N and O-Z.

BLUESUNCOMPANYMAN

I finished the 3rd and final part of Tin Man on tuesday and was honestly sad that I saw this entire thing to it's conclusion.

By mid-way into part 2 I was becoming able to predict the outcome of everything and thus my suspension of disbelief started to wane. By part 3, the entire storyline had fallen into easily predictable patterns and that's when I began to out loud declare the general process to the ending:

"DG will follow clues to the emerald. Once there she will retrieve and her sis will steal it. With the emerald in her possession the sis should kill DG outright but won't because DG must live as the primary plot device. So DG will be imprisioned somehow or be otherwise incapicatated. Then our 3 main characters Glitch, Raw, and the Tin Man will work to free her from this constraint and they will together travel to put an end to the threat to the O.Z. The final 15 minutes will entail the witch coming Oh-So-Close to her goals, only be defeated at the last possible moment."

The only cliche' they ommitted was to make the witch's tower collapse upon her defeat. Don't they know that every evil villian's lair must spontaneously collapse upon their defeat?

My overall review of Tin Man is that it started out fresh in part one but devolved into predictable BS by part 3.

As a final thought, I believe they titled this project incorrectly. Tin Man implies that the Tin Man is the primary character. He isn't, that falls to DG. But perhaps they missed a great chance to produce a memorable work of art? I told a friend after a day of thinking about the finale that the story would have been so much better if the Tin Man had been the main character. DG can still discover him in his steel coffin and release him. Allow us to follow him through the story all the way to the happy final ending only to discover the horrid twist: The entire quest was a trick of the metal coffin....one of many used to torment the imprisioned. At the end we see him still trapped inside his tomb, learning that the quest was a trick...and that this farce had been played on him several times but with each cycle he forgets. The final cut would be an image of his sad tortured face, secure in the knowledge that the OZ was long ago destroyed and that he will never get out.

This is my torture: I have experienced superior storytellers like Joss and now most other media sources fail to measure up.

Do not fear me. Our's is a peaceful race and we must live in harmony.

I gotta disagree on a few points here BSC.

First. Yes the last installment was fairly predictable (even from clues planted in the first hour of the first episode) but not in a cliche sort of way more in terms of dramatic necessity.

Second. No way can you end a series the way you suggest. Neither in a commercial sense - The DVDs wouldn't sell nearly as well - nor in an ethical sense; the holidays are depressing enough without that big of a downer ending. The most they could have done, I think, would be to have DG save OZ but at the cost of her life, her sister's or both. Or if they are setting up a series they could have had the witch win but have the princesses escape to fight against the darkness.

That having been said I think they could have cut out a lot of the last episode and still told the story well. And I certainly wanted to see more at the end than just a couple group hugs. Perhaps a coronation scene or a reviving the land of OZ montage. Something to show how the characters are now living their lives after the defeat of the wicked.

Dude, that's cold! How could anyone tarnish the great ending of the original OZ w/ a ending so bleak and desolate ? Wickedy excellent!

Perhaps, off in the distance, something in the background could appear from around the corner, well out of the view of Tin Man's sight, giving viewers a glimmer of hope? Something so obscure as to maintain its secrecy, but also so unique that we'd be forced to ask.. " Could it be ? "

Ah, but you forget that DG exonerates the villain, so the villain’s lair now becomes the heroes lair.

By the end of the first installment I think I was certain of two things. The evil witch was DG’s sister and DG would “talk her down” at the very end.

And people wonder why I act as if screenwriters are overpaid.

What amazed me was how well everyone took everything. DG discovers that her parents are robots and her life has been a lie and she barely bats an eye. Then she saves her sister from the wicked witch and they hug like she visiting for Christmas. About the only thing DG showed any emotion about was being the cause of her sister’s downfall, but even that seemed out of place, because wouldn’t DG feel more regretful shock?

Still, crappy story or not, I did enjoy it for the novelty of it.

The first thing I would have changed is DG’s parents. The kindly Kansas mom and dad aren’t critical to the story. They could have been replaced with dispassionate, cold and insensitive parents, but parents that nonetheless were extremely protective of their daughter. DG grew up safe but unloved and unhappy. Then when DG gets to OZ and discovers her parents are robots, her parents prove to be a kind of foreshadowing. DG feels a certain connection to her robot parents, but doesn’t really miss them, making the coming transition to princess of OZ a more acceptable and romantic thing. It’s still a cliché. The young girl who wants to escape a troubled childhood in fairytales, but it’s one that would have worked better.
